Music Box Biographical Collection: Queen - $12.99 The gleefully flamboyant and pansexual British supergroup Queen rose like a phoenix out of the ashes of the now-forgotten psychedelic act Smile in the early seventies. The earlier band’s vocalist Tim Staffell abandoned Smile, which inspired fellow members Brian May and Roger Taylor to follow his lead; May and Taylor formed Queen with lead vocalist (and former Wreckage member) Freddie Mercury and bassist John Deacon. Mercury imparted to the group hefty doses of camp, acid humor, mock-classical arrangements, and an instantly identifiable soaring wail, that brought about an electrifying career, highlighted by such blockbuster efforts as the albums Sheer Heart Attack (1974), A Night at the Opera (1975) and A Day at the Races (1976), in addition to well-publicized flubs such as the notorious late-seventies nude bicycle race and declining popularity in the States during the eighties (although Queen developed an even larger international fanbase during that period). The group, of course, officially folded after Mercury publicly announced his AIDS diagnosis in late 1991 and died one day later. Now, the documentary Music Box Biographical Collection: Queen uses a skillfully edited combo of one-on-one interviews, backstage footage, and vintage concert performances to tell the story of the band’s rise, fall, and sudden resurgence in popularity during the early nineties, much of it catalyzed by Mercury’s death. Epistrophy [2006] $9.99 As another portion of the Legends of Jazz series, Eclipse released Epistrophy (or “Epitrophy” as the misprinted label states) as the installment pertaining to Thelonious Monk. The album is basically a collection of performances, recorded circa 1963 or 1964, of a basic jazz quartet, headed by the genius of modern music himself. By various cues, it would appear that most if not all of the tracks were live recordings. The album begins with “Well You Needn’t,” one of Monk’s trademark pieces, and moves through a couple more songs, “I’m Getting Sentimental Over You” and the title track “Epistrophy,” before moving to a wonderful interpretation of the standard “Body and Soul,” which Monk thoroughly de-standardizes before he’s finished. Finally, Monk standard (and pop semi-standard) “Straight No Chaser” appears, followed by “Rhythm-a-Ning.” Though the performances might not be at Monk’s top quality, that’s mainly because of the amazingly high quality that Monk could attain, and they are quite sensational in their own right, as Monk rarely played a song the same way twice. Not a bad choice at the price level, though other compilations of Monk’s work might be better, such as Blue Note’s Best of Thelonious Monk from 1991. ~ Adam Greenberg

Starting Point $26.99 Solo performer: Kotaro Oshio (vocals, guitar).Japanese guitarist Kotaro Oshio occupies that rarefied space where the spontaneity of jazz and the transcendent properties New Age converge. Oshio plays strong melodies using open tunings to create lovely harmonics, and artful tapping to convey urgency and passion. On this 2002 release, Oshio plays with no accompaniment, but the moods and textures are varied enough to carry the whole album. “Komorebi,” a shimmering, cinematic affair, benefits from tasteful reverb and a real sweetness. “Blue Sky” is a breezy acoustic number recalling Pat Metheny’s more upbeat moments. The jaunty “Third Man Theme” is a surprising choice for a cover, but Oshio injects new life into the easy-listening staple, using vibrato to imitate the original’s zither. The album ends on a stirring note with “Hard Rain,” a Hendrix-like, riff-heavy song that allows Oshio to show off his aggressive right hand technique. He slaps the guitar body, scrapes the strings, and leaves the listener wondering what style of music this gifted guitarist can’t make his own.
