Sound The Alarm! Waking Up With Your iPod

There is another use for your iPod other than just listening to music or watching videos. You can actually set up your iPod to wake yourself up in the morning. Whether you like waking up to that BEEP, BEEP, BEEP sound from your old worn out alarm clock, or the static that come from your clock radio, the iPods alarm clock has them all beat. It will change your morning routine forever.

This should work with any iPod except the iPod Shuffle. The iPod needs to have firmware 2.1 or newer software. If you only have 2.0 or older software, do not worry. Firmware can be downloaded from apple website. A pair of speakers will also be needed.

The alarm clock feature on the iPod can be found with all of its other features, like the calendar and notes under the iPods Extra menu. This is also where you can find the games, too.

To begin setting your alarm, go to iPods main menu and select extra. Then go to clock and choose alarm clock. Once all of these are chosen, set the alarm clock to preferred time you would like to wake up.

The iPod can be set to play a song from your song list when the alarm goes off. Make sure to turn the alarm on. The icon for the alarm looks like a bell. It will come into view on the right side of the screen when the alarm feature is set. You will need to attach a pair of speakers where the headphones are usually plugged into the iPod.

Make sure that you double-check the volume on your iPod. Play a song just to make sure. This way you will be to set the volume on your iPod to make sure it is loud enough to wake you up in the morning. You will also want to make sure the iPods battery has a good charge. If it does not, or the battery goes dead, it will not be able to wake you up the next morning. Just to be on the safe side, you may want to plug into the iPods AC adaptor and not have to worry about the iPod not waking you up in the morning.

It is also a good idea not to only make sure that the time is set correctly on your iPod, but also that the correct date and time are also set. To do this you will need to go to Extras and choose clock. At this point you should be able to check that your date and time are correct. You may want to make sure your computer has the correct date & time too. Every time that you iPod is docked on to your computer, the iPods date and time settings will get synchronized to the computer.

If you would like to wake up with your iPod playing songs from your playlist, you will need to create a playlist for the iPod to play when the alarm goes off. This playlist can hold many songs or as little as one song.

If you need to make up a playlist and you are away from your computer, there is a way that you can make an On the Go playlist. Heres how to do it:

Go to the song you would like to choose using scroll wheel. Press and hold center button until song flashes over and over again. It will now be add to the On the Go Playlist. To add more songs to this playlist just repeat this last step. To view your On the Go playlist go to Music and select playlists and you should be able to see all the songs in this playlist. To remove a song from the playlist repeat this last step by holding down the select button on the song you want to remove until name flashes over and over again.

Now you should be able to rock n roll your way right out of bed in the morning waking up to your favorite music. This should be able to get your day started in the right direction. You will bebop your way into the shower and be skipping all the way to work with all of your favorite songs still in your head.

Rock You Sinners! The Dawn of British Rock & Roll $15.99 For most listeners around the world, the “dawn” of British rock & roll didn’t take place until the Beatles started to make their first records. Even for those who grew up in the U.K. at the time, the true dawn of British rock often isn’t considered to have taken place until the late ’50s, when the first credible homegrown singers in the idiom emerged, like Cliff Richard and Billy Fury. In fact, however, British rock & roll — or, perhaps more accurately, the influence of rock & roll in British pop music — was starting to be heard as early as 1953, when bandleader Ted Heath covered Bill Haley’s “Crazy Man Crazy” (included on this CD). This intriguing 31-track compilation offers a wealth of pre-Cliff Richard & the Shadows recordings that, if not exactly rock & roll, showed British pop musicians trying to do something with the form. As it happened, they more often than not ended up sounding like rather staid swing jazz bands trying to broaden their appeal by putting a rock & roll or R&B song in their set without gaining any true grasp or appreciation of this newfangled music that had originated on the other side of the Atlantic. It wasn’t really until Tommy Steele’s late-1956 hit “Rock with the Caveman” (also included here) that any British performer made a reasonable approximation of authentic rock & roll sounds, and even that hit was something of a clumsy novelty. But while this is by no means something you would put on the order of the later British pioneers like Richard, Fury, and Johnny Kidd, let alone jump blues and early rock & roll bands rocking the urban centers of the United States, that doesn’t mean that this isn’t a fairly enjoyable compilation on its own musical terms, if something of a crass guilty pleasure. Though many of these efforts to spice up what’s essentially fairly square jazz-pop music with a bit of rock & roll (or at least do a rock & roll song with a jazz arrangement) sound a little unintentionally funny, much of them do have a somewhat appealing na?ve energy, like that of performers suppressing a grin while they exploit a passing fad. Of course, that passing fad, both in the U.S. and U.K., turned out to be the most popular musical style of the 20th century, relegating these early somewhat exploitative attempts to mimic it to the dustbins of history. This compilation is a small revelation, however, in exposing how the roots of the music’s foothold in Britain ran much deeper and earlier than is commonly assumed, almost amounting to documentation of a missing chapter in rock & roll history. Yes, there are some awfully stiff covers of early rock & roll hits on board, like Gale Warning’s Mae West-ish take on “Heartbreak Hotel.” But really, some of these tracks aren’t bad by any standards, like Steele’s credibly swinging “Doomsday Rock” and Tony Crombie & His Rockets’ credibly pounding “Rock Shuffle Boogie,” while the Goons’ parody “Bloodnok’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Call” (an actual number three U.K. hit in 1956) remains pretty funny. ~

Rock N’ Roll Scene $11.99 This collection is among the Scene anthologies taken from the vaults of the U.K.-based Decca Records. While most series of this ilk seem to pander to the average listener, the antithesis is true of these entries. In fact, the converse is actually the strong suit on Rock ‘n’ Roll Scene (1999). These 25 tracks sound arguably better than they ever have before, which is particularly noticeable on the more familiar cuts “Collette” by Billy Fury and Lonnie Donegan Skiffle Group’s “Rock Island Line.” The song list has been astutely compiled, keeping in mind both the hardcore as well as the less-fanatical (and perhaps more typical) enthusiast. Of comparable interest, this era predates North American Beatlemania. Instead, the focus lies on a decidedly transitory period when rockabilly, teen idol, and skiffle ruled the airwaves and popular music charts. As Decca initially consisted of distinctly British acts, many of the featured acts may not be instantly recognizable. However, they have proven to be no less influential. Cases in point are Bob Cort Skiffle’s stylistic reinvention of Chuck Berry’s “School Day” and the equally impressive “Downbound Train” by Ken Colver’s Skiffle Group. They take the tunes to places that the original never even hinted at. In the case of the former, the fluid electric guitar lines are more derivative of Chet Atkins or Les Paul than Berry’s unmistakable amplified attack. Another cover comes from Screaming Lord Sutch, whose overhaul of Leiber & Stoller’s “I’m a Hog for You” is strikingly similar to the interpretation that a pre-Grateful Dead combo — calling themselves the Warlocks — were regularly adding to their sets years after this 1963 version. There are also a couple of worthy “beat” precursors, including Freddie Starr & the Midnighters’ “It’s Shaking Time” or Eddie Hickey’s “Plain Jane.” Sally Kelly was somewhat of an anomaly as a female rocker in the predominantly male-oriented business. Although “Little Cutie” is one of the more lightweight offerings, the gutsy vocals during the chorus recall Stateside artists Joanie Sommers or Little Peggy March. ~ Lindsay Planer
