Percussions d'Afrique: African Drums

Percussions d’Afrique: African Drums

$9.99

Expanding and contracting musical forms, richly embroidered polyrhythmic patterns, and highly developed group dynamics characterize the Cameroonian and Senegalese percussion ensembles featured on Percussions d’Afrique: African Drums. Balafons (wooden-key xylophones with gourd-resonator frames), jemb?s (goblet-shaped hand drums), sundry rattles, and a large variety of other percussion instruments are heard on the CD’s 11 tracks. From the oscillating and contrapuntal sounds of the drum ensemble featured on the opening track, “Danses S?n?galaises,” to the shekere-grounded sounds on the album’s last cut, “Danse des Hochets,” a plethora of metric, rhythmic, and melodic explorations are heard. Unfortunately, the sketchy liner notes convey neither the identities of the performers nor the specific names of the places where the recordings were made. In addition, an overgeneralized assertion in the liner notes that “Africa’s music culture…is dominated by percussion instruments” is a bit too simplistic. Africa is home to many diverse cultures and musical traditions, not all of which are adequately reflected by the sounds of West African percussion music. Though this cursory treatment in the liner notes is shortsighted, it does not affect the vivid and compelling nature of the field recordings presented here. ~ John Vallier

The English translation of the title is misleading: it’s not just the drums that are African; balafons are, too. A balafon is an African xylophone, quite melodious usually. But it can be used in a number of ways and in this field recording from West Africa, it runs the gamut. On quite a few of the tracks it appears along with the drums as just another rhythm instrument. Sometimes, as on “Fete Bamileke” from Cameroon, this works; at other times it’s a bit monotonous. On a track like “Solo de Balafon” from Guinea, the balafon offers up melody and rhythm in a tasty confection. At the same time, the listener should be warned that on quite a few tracks the balafon does not appear at all, only drums and maybe some chanted vocals. This isn’t necessarily bad, but it’s not what the cover would lead one to expect. There’s quite a bit of ethnic variety on the disc, not just in the nations represented, but also in groups like the Gnawa and the Pygmies, who are, as always, especially stimulating. The sound leaves something to be desired. A mixed bag for the Africanophile. ~ Kurt Keefner

Includes liner notes by Akin Akiwowo, Babatunde Olatunji, Tom Terrell.Way before King Sunny Ade or Fela & Afrika 70 brought African music to American ears, there was Babatunde Olantunji’s DRUMS OF PASSION. Produced by John Hammond and Teo Macero in 1959 for Columbia Records, it has never been out of print. This is quite a feat considering that this music consists strictly of traditional African drumming and accompanying chants. DRUMS OF PASSION is not a “field” recording however. Each of its eight substantial tracks is a spaciously recorded exhibition of crack African musicianship. Still, the mainly dignified tenor of the proceedings isn’t quite as wild as the samba-mad BLACK ORPHEUS soundtrack, another 1959 recording that introduced real world rhythms to an intrigued Europe and United States. Still, it remains to this day a perfect introduction to authentic African roots music, a necessary reality check against the exotica of the late ’50s.

Latin Percussion Claytone Udu Drums

Latin Percussion Claytone Udu Drums

$79.99

Latin Percussion Claytone Udu Drums Latin Percussion Claytone Udu Drums Description: Artist, designer, teacher, and author, Frank Giorgini has developed a line of West African clay drums called Udu Drums. He first learned of these drums in 1974 on an educational trip to Zaria, Nigeria. Through years of development and experimentation, he has perfected his line of Udu Drums. They remain true to their origins while offering improved sound qualities and durability. They have since become extremely popular and are used by some of the world’s leading percussionists. LP Udu Drums possess distinct tonal qualities which range from subtle bass tones to soothing tabla-like tones. Their clay construction is based upon centuries-old African traditions. The name “Udu” has been derived from the Nigerian Ibo language, meaning “pottery”. Each LP Udu Drum offers individual tonal values. They can be played by hitting any part of the drum with the palm of the hand or the finger tips. The textured surfaces provide additional tonal variations by creating rubbing sounds. The sound possibilities can be further expanded using the unique microphone ports found in each chamber. Small mics can be mounted for amplification and to capture the wondrous internal sounds. LP Udu Drums are generally played in a seated position with the drum on the player’s lap. They can also be played on a table top or floor using the included straw ring stands. LP Udu Drum Claytones are teardrop shaped drums available in four sizes. The smallest Claytone #1, produces high-pitched, cutting, “soprano” sounds. The Claytone #2 gives a slightly fuller, more tenor sound than the #1. The Claytone #3 creates deep, powerful, “baritone” sounds. The Claytone #4 is the largest and produces the deepest and “bassiest” sound of the four drums. Each drum has a side hole in the body and a top hole in the neck for additional sound possibilities as well as textured surfaces for creating rubbing sounds.
