311 $5.11 Razor-sharp guitars, hip-hop and funk rhythms, and healthy doses of ska and dance-hall reggae make this one of the most surprising albums to come out of the American heartland. 1959 Bassman LTD 4×10 Guitar Combo Amplifier (Lacquer Tweed Covering) $1399.99 The 50s Fender Bassman was the pro bassists answer to amplifying a great new invention: the Fender Precision Bass guitar. This powerful 50-watt rig could easily compete with the common instrumentation of the day: horns, piano, four-piece drum kit with calfskin heads, and maybe even an electric guitar through a nice, new 10-watt amp! By the 60s and 70s, the original all-tube Tweed 4×10 Bassman was popular with rock, country and blues guitarists as a reliably great-sounding and easy-to-use guitar amp. Even some emerging British amp designers of the day copied its circuitry for use in their most celebrated designs. In the 1990s, Fender released an affordable reissue of the now-collectible 59 Bassman amplifier to massive acclaim. Many guitarists, tired of experimenting with preamps, equalizers, and effects racks, rediscovered the simple pleasure of plugging into a Fender tube amp. The Bassmans wide stage coverage, touch-sensitive dynamics and full-frequency swirl make it the perfect vehicle for building a great tone with almost any guitar or effect. The reissue Bassman continues to be a staple of the Fender guitar amp line to this day. The new 59 Bassman LTD is enhanced with: Genuine lacquered Tweed covering. Finger-joined pine cabinet for woody, resonant tone. Original spec 5AR4 rectifier tube for natural compression when playing hard. Internal bias pot makes it easier to experiment with various output tubes. Two GT-6L6 Groove Tube output tubes. Three improved 12AX7 preamp tubes. Fitted cover. Warranty:Fender Musical Instruments Corporation warrants that the Fender product you have purchased shall be free of any defects in parts and workmanship if used under normal operating conditions for a period of five (5) years from the date of purchase or initial lease, except that footswitches, covers, speakers, rechargeable batteries, cabinets, handles and cabinet hardware are warranted for a period of one (1) year from date of purchase or initial lease and light bulbs, |

31 Fiddle Favorites $9.99 These 31 fiddle tunes and breakdowns were recorded during an all-night session in the mid-’60s with an all-acoustic combo of dobro, guitar, bass, and Fiddlin’ Mutt Poston’s fiddle. Mixing traditional fiddle tunes and folk songs with an occasional Western swing number (“Take Me Back to Tulsa”) or Tin Pan Alley favorite (“Alabama Jubilee”), Poston’s nimble sawing and sturdy accompaniment make for a solid showcase that is sure to please enthusiasts of country fiddlin’ and old-timey instrumental music. ~ Greg Adams, Rovi |

57 Twin Custom Guitar Combo Amp $2999.99 The 57 Twin Amp, one of the most collectible amps of all time, is the latest member of Fender's highly acclaimed Custom Series amplifier family. Its an all-tube combo amp with hand-wired circuitry and premium components.Fender reproduced the 1955-57 edition low powered 5E8A circuit, which produces 40 watts into a pair of 12 Alnico-magnet speakers. The Twins harmonically rich clean tones are great for authentic vintage rock, blues, and country playing; when cranked up, the Twin Amps fat, sophisticated distortion tone works wonderfully in many modern musical situations. The 57 Twin Amp gets its power from a pair of new USA-made GT6L6-GE output tubes. The power supply includes Fenders rarely seen mid-50s dual rectifier arrangement, which uses two 5U4 rectifier tubes. With this design, power amp compression or sag is more subtle than it is in many Fender Tweed designs. The Twins preamp contains four high-gain 12AX7 tubes, three of which may be substituted with 12AY7s for the original 50s low-gain sound, if desired.Fender also added an internal bias pot, allowing easy substitution of various 6L6 types. Control panel details include: Normal and Bright volumes, four Inputs (two Normal, two Bright), Treble, Bass, and Presence knobs. The 57 Twins finger-joined solid pine cabinet resonates with a warm, woody tone. The amp is covered in genuine Lacquered Tweed, and the visually striking package is topped off with vintage brown/gold grille cloth and a leather strap handle. Fitted cover is included. |

70 Concert $20.98 This European compact disc reissues Canned Heat’s Live Concert 70 (1971), which was released as Canned Heat Concert (Recorded Live in Europe) (1970) in the U.K.. The short-lived lineup heard here features Bob “The Bear” Hite (vocals), Alan “Blind Owl” Wilson (guitar/vocals/harmonica), Larry “The Mole” Taylor (bass), Aldolfo “Fito” de la Parra (drums), as well as Harvey Mandel (guitar), who had replaced Henry “Sunflower” Vestine (guitar). Arguably more significant, however, is that these are among the last gigs with Wilson. Sadly, less than six months later, he overdosed prior to the Heat’s fall 1970 European outing. The tour captured on this platter was spawned by the unanticipated success of the combo’s cover of Wilbert Harrison’s “Let’s Work Together” — taken off of the album Future Blues (1970) — which became their most successful side throughout Europe. With Mandel driving the band instrumentally, there is an incremental shift towards more jammed-out interaction and completely rearranged melodies. This is immediately exemplified by the loose and funky “That’s All Right Mama.” Alternately, Wilson’s dark visage is evident on the lonesome and harrowing “Pulling Hair Blues,” or the improvised “London Blues,” a number likewise marked by his biting bottleneck slide guitar solos and haunting off-key vocals. Although the track list portrays it as a medley, “Back on the Road Again” bears little in common with the “On the Road Again.” Rather than, at the very least, a verse from both songs being played, the latter is only alluded to. The live reading of “Let’s Work Together” is as vivacious as the original, with the Heat going all out for their appropriately appreciative audience. ~ Lindsay Planer, Rovi |

75 $18.98 Joe Zawinul’s final edition of his Zawinul Syndicate band was a terrific ensemble that was perfect for any jazz festival. The multi-ethnic content, driving funky pulse, and Zawinul’s colorful keyboard foundation kept listeners on their toes and rapt with attention. Using percussion and guitar with no other solo instruments, Zawinul was fully able to carry the proceedings with support from very talented performers who always complemented the music, but never got in the way, or dared to. This live double-CD set perfectly exemplifies Zawinul’s personalized direction before he suddenly passed away, and exudes all of the energy the group produced in concert. For Weather Report fans, there are many direct or implied signposts that remind us why that band was so unique under the Austrian-born keyboardist’s direction. But at the core is Zawinul’s expanded sound, based in technological advances, conjuring up any number of folk based motifs from around the globe. “Orient Express” and “Madagascar” start the voyage in good form, reminiscent of Weather Report’s “Black Market” phase, as electric bass guitarist Linley Marthe channels Jaco Pastorius as Mediterranean music is contemporized with an American backbeat. Late period Miles Davis simplicity is employed during “Scarlet Woman,” perhaps a cousin of “Back Seat Betty” in its slow and mysterious but eventually composed strut. The mbira or thumb piano is played by Paco Serv alongside Zawinul’s vocoder and synths on the sparse “Zanza II,” and “Cafe Andalusia” concludes the first CD in a straight rock-funk beat with wordless vocals from the impressive Sabine Kabongo driving an unstoppable forward motion and kinetic energy. Seems like the band can’t wait to dive into “Fast City/Two Lines,” a speedy bullet train combo tune, fueled by the stinging Santana-like guitar of Alegre Correa, inspiring fine solos from Marthe and drummer Serv. -”Clario” is all Correa’s, a spotlight on Brazilian Jobim-styled sounds, induced… |

AC15HTVH Hand Wired Guitar Amplifier Head $899 The AC15HTVH delivers all the great features of the AC15H1TV combo in a 8 or 16 ohm selectable head. Rather than just a typical reissue where a vintage amp is dusted off and copied, this amplifier, like the others forthcoming in the Heritage Collection, transports you through the golden age of VOX tone, combining the prized EF86 preamp channel of 1958 with the 1963 Top Boost channel all in one amplifier. Add in some modern tone shaping control enhancements and the result is perhaps the finest VOX amplifier in the company’s 50 year history. The EF86: The magical VOX tone. But what is it that makes EF86 based VOX amplifiers some of the most collectible in the world? Maybe its the way the amp naturally overdrives, almost breathing with a life of its own. Perhaps its the transparency of tone that flatters a premium quality guitar, or the way it dynamically responds to the subtlety of your picking. Or maybe its the raw power of the creamy distortion as you crank the amp all the way up. Whatever it is, there is an undeniable magic about this period of VOX amplification – an age when the most simple of circuits produced some of the most complex and musical of tones. Now in short supply, the EF86 Pentode tube is at the heart of this elusive tone. Fifty years later, the magic returns. The AC15H Head & Cab: A detailed look. The 15-watt AC15 Hand-wired head features two channels of unmistakable VOX tone driving a single 12 Celestion Alnico Blue speaker housed in a separate, matching speaker cab. The valve complement is made up of 1 x EF86, 3 x ECC83/12AX7, 2 x EL84, and 1 x EZ81 (rectifier). Channel 1 is the EF86 Preamp channel, and features two inputs wired in the traditional way providing a 6dB gain difference between them. A two-position BASS SHIFT switch is included, with position 1 voiced to the original vintage-correct bass response and position 2 voiced to tighten the bass response and reduce any muddiness during high volume use. Behringer VT15FX Virtube 15-Watt Guitar Amplifier $217.99 Equally perfect for aspiring and for accomplished guitarists for practicing or warm-up with uncompromised sound options. Armed with 15-watts, a custom-designed 8″ Bugera speaker, and sixteen digital effects, including four each of the following: reverb, delay, chorus and flanger, this baby is ready to rock! The secret behind virtube’s incredible sound is our VTC tube modeling processor, which exudes the very essence of tube saturation and compression, but VTC does so much more than just generate a cheap copy of a specific amp character. It accurately emulates the interaction between classic tube stages, responding to the subtle tonal changes that occur when one stage hands the signal off the next. The resulting signal is rich in harmonic content and far more true to the nature of tube amps. virtube’s clean channel is elegant in its simplicity. The sound is open and uncolored and can be tailored to your needs by volume and the analog passive equalizer. The overdrive channel features gain, volume, bass, treble and our proprietary contour control, with its radical midrange sweep. All this versatility enables you to artfully define your “perfect” tone, from traditional to scooped modern and anything in-between. Comes with state-of-the-art effects and not some cheap and cheesy reverb chip, but a full-blown 24-bit digital effects processor with 16 great-sounding reverbs, choruses, flangers and delays. This tasty collection of effects is a must-have for any guitarist and includes room, stage, concert and cathedral reverbs, slap-back and medium echoes, two long delays, plus slow and fast modulation effects, all right at your fingertips. |

Ben Folds Five $14.99 The debut album from piano-playing Ben Folds’ smart-ass trio is a potent, and extremely fun, collection of postmodern rock ditties that comes off as a pleasantly workable combination of Tin Pan Alley showmanship, Todd Rundgren-style power pop, and myriad alt-rock sensibilities. The gimmick here is that not a single guitar was used on the 12 songs; but the way that Folds and his bandmates unravel their instruments (piano, bass, and drums make up this combo), even the most hardened noise enthusiasts will hardly miss it (it’s the melodies that carry this album, and Folds has plenty of them up his sleeve). Some of it is a bit coy — Folds plays the joker as much as he does the musician — but with the dead-on “Underground,” they manage to skewer, and pay loving tribute, to the oh-so-hip indie scene from which they came. ~ Michael Gallucci, Rovi |

Big World $12.99 Joe Jackson crafted his most labored, serious album in 1984′s Body and Soul, so it’s no surprise that he made a complete turnaround for its follow-up, Big World. Instead of delving deeper into jazz, Jackson pared his lineup down to a basic guitar, bass, and drums rock combo and recorded all of Big World live in front of an audience in a move to avoid the over-production that bogged down records of its period. Interestingly, Jackson insisted the audience not make a sound during the recording, so this doesn’t sound like a live album, except in the spots where Jackson’s voice wears a bit thin. And, running over 60 minutes and across three record “sides,” Big World is a sweeping album, shifting from a more accessible first side to an experimental middle and closing out with a more aggressive third side. It works, since Big World is the most raw and immediate record of the middle part of Jackson’s career. But listeners expecting another Look Sharp! won’t be impressed, as this is still a much more serious, concerned Jackson than before. As the title of the album suggests, Jackson is tackling big issues, such as global cultural differences, Reagan-era politics, yuppies, and relationships — from romantic ones to those you hold with your roots, as on the reflective “Home Town.” At times, it works marvelously, and at times the songs are too ponderous and minimal to make any impact. But the best moments, like “Right and Wrong,” “Tonight and Forever,” and “Home Town,” establish Big World as one of the best and most overlooked records of Joe Jackson’s career. ~ Jason Damas, Rovi |

Chicago II [Bonus Tracks] $34.98 Chicago Transit Authority recorded this double-barrel follow-up to their eponymously titled 1969 debut effort. The contents of Chicago II (1970) underscore the solid foundation of complex jazz changes with heavy electric rock & roll on the first set. The septet also continued their ability to blend the seemingly divergent musical styles into some of the best and most effective pop music of the era. One thing that had changed was the band’s name, which was shortened to simply Chicago to avoid any potential litigious situations from the city of Chicago’s transportation department — who claimed the name as proprietary property. Musically, James Pankow (trombone) was about to further cross-pollinate the band’s sound with the multi-faceted six-song “Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon.” The classically inspired suite also garnered two of their most beloved hits — the upbeat pop opener “Make Me Smile” as well as the achingly poignant “Colour My World” — both of which remained at the center of the group’s live sets. Chicago had certainly not abandoned their active pursuit of blending high-octane electric rockers such as “25 or 6 to 4″ to the progressive jazz inflections heard in the breezy syncopation of “The Road.” Adding further depth of field is the darker “Poem for the People” as well as the politically charged five-song set subtitled “It Better End Soon.” These selections feature the combo driving home their formidable musicality and uncanny ability to coalesce styles telepathically and at a moment’s notice. The contributions of Terry Kath (guitar/vocals) stand out, as he unleashes some of his most pungent and sinuous leads, contrasting the tight brass and woodwind trio of Lee Loughnane (trumpet/vocals), Walter Parazaider (woodwinds/vocals), and the afore mentioned Pankow. Peter Cetera (bass/vocals) also marks his songwriting debut — on the final cut of the suite as well as the album — with “Where Do We Go From Here.” It bookends both, with at the v… |

Chicago X [Bonus Tracks] $13.96 Although it was their tenth release Chicago X (1976) was actually the band’s eighth studio effort — as Chicago IV (1972) had been a live set from Carnegie Hall and Chicago IX (1975), which precedes this disc, was the their first best-of collection. Musically, the combo had effectively abandoned their extended free-form jazz leanings for more succinct pop songs. That is not to say that the band couldn’t rock, because they could as evidenced by the Terry Kath (guitar/vocals) full-tilt rave-up “Once or Twice,” which commences the album. The hot brass section bows deeply and respectfully to their Muscle Shoals counterparts as Kath does his best funky Otis Redding vocal. Showing his tremendous depth of field, Kath bookends the LP with the empowering and positive “Hope for Love.” In between those two extremes are some of Chicago’s best-known works — such as Peter Cetera’s (bass/vocals) chart-topping light rock epic “If You Leave Me Now” and Robert Lamm’s (keyboards/vocals) “Another Rainy Night in New York City.” The latter side also reveals a minor motif, as it is a Latin-based song about the Big Apple. It follows in the footsteps of the improv-heavy “Italian from New York” from their previous studio effort, the fusion-filled Chicago VII (1974). Lamm contributes a few other tucked-away classics to Chicago X as well — such as the aggressive and sexy “You Get It Up.” There are also a pair from James Pankow(trombone/vocals) in the form of the syncopated “You Are on My Mind” — which crossed over onto both the adult contemporary as well as pop music charts. His other composition is the classy brass of “Skin Tight.” The upfront horn interjections and overall augmentation are akin to the sound made famous by their West Coast Tower of Power contemporaries. As a majority of their previous efforts had done — all sans their debut — Chicago X was a Top Ten album and “If You Leave Me Now” became a double Grammy winner, for both Best Pop Vocal Performance by … |

City of Evil $17.98 Avenged Sevenfold’s first two albums had a clear influence from heavy metal, but the California combo also freely incorporated emo, screamo, and post-hardcore elements. The mixing and matching meant 2003′s Waking the Fallen had as many sighing harmonies as it did harmonized guitar freakouts. And yet City of Evil, the band’s third record and Warner debut, is absolutely rife with the imagery and pacing of classic metal. Look at that artwork. It features a skeletal swordsman flying a steed with steaming nostrils over the urban inferno of the title; tattoos, demons, and a skull with flapping wings adorn the lyric book. The New Wave of British Heavy Metal influence is immediate and prevalent, from the maniacally rippling percussion throughout to the triumphantly whining lead guitars in the chorus of “Blinded in Chains,” or the soaring melody in “Burn It Down” that meets its match in Metallica-styled verses. The downshifts into guttural roars are largely gone, replaced by better-integrated atmospheric stretches or the tighter songcraft of a track like “Bat Country,” which intersects punk and pop influences in a manner similar to My Chemical Romance. At over seven minutes, “Wicked End” is a late-album standout. Vocalist M. Shadows rips through couplets like “We’ve grown in numbers, six hundred sixty-six/War breaks, a sign of the end, eternally expelled/Look to the sky for knowledge, the stars align tonight,” guitarists Synyster Gates and Zacky Vengeance trade off blistering solos, and there’s a full choral interlude in the center, complete with an angelic host and sighing cellos. Which is all totally metal, and refreshingly unmarred by attempts to fit too many jumbled genres in. City of Evil’s ballads are a little trite, and even its double-bass raging doesn’t necessarily break new ground. But Avenged Sevenfold gets all the pieces right, and sound like they’re having more fun here than in the scattershot approach of the first couple records. ~ Johnny Loftus, Rovi |

Dreams So Real $11.99 Performing the intricate music of Carla Bley is no mean feat, but if anyone is up for the challenge, it would be vibraphonist Gary Burton. Signifying a high watermark in his career in the mid-’70s, Dreams So Real teams Burton with his fellow professor at the Berklee College of Music Mick Goodrick, along with recently graduated student Pat Metheny. Add the peerless electric bass guitarist Steve Swallow and always proficient drummer Bob Moses, and you have the makings of a short-lived supergroup capable of playing Bley’s memorable, melancholy music. While generally regarded as one of many Burton/Metheny pairings, it is Goodrick’s individualism (it was he who primarily tutored Metheny) that needs more recognition. With Goodrick on electric six-string and Metheny on electric 12-string guitar, the sonorities they establish allow Burton to freely discourse on Bley’s prickly angular melodies. The brittle and fractured combo track “Ictus/Syndrome” — closer to a three-piece suite — goes from a frantic neo-bop meter to straight-ahead swing with a clearly inspired Burton rambling into the bright signature rondo sound that Metheny and Swallow have always owned. “Syndrome” might also be familiar to Bley’s fans as “Wrong Key Donkey.” “Doctor” merges the vibes and guitars into a guided prognosis of hypertension within slowly elevated blood pressure levels. “Intermission Music,” inspired by golden age films, is a beautiful waltz vehicle for the guitars rhythmically, and for Swallow and Moses melodically. With the bandmembers at their most passionate, the title track is a lighthearted but cerebral ballad, “Vox Humana” a simplified tango, while “Jesus Maria” evokes the delicate epic strains of Bley’s personalized sound with Burton playing it alone. While the singing sound of Metheny is in its infant stages, it is easily recognizable and clearly realized. Generally regarded as one of Burton’s top three recorded dates, it has stood the test of time. Perhaps some day,… |

False Start $13.98 Arthur Lee (rhythm guitar/lead vocals/piano) chose to keep the Love moniker alive after disintegrating the band’s original incarnation. By the close of the 1960s, Lee was joined by a new lineup featuring a rhythm section of Frank Fayad (bass) and George Suranovich (drums), with Jay Donnellan (lead guitar) and then Gary Rowles (lead guitar) holding court as the band’s primary stringman with the latter present on False Start (1970). While the Lee-supplied material isn’t his most memorable, one positive factor is the combo’s consistency and cohesiveness. This can be traced back to Love having just completed a successful European tour and Lee being able to collaborate with his longtime pal Jimi Hendrix, who would not only help Lee write the LP’s jammed-out opener “The Everlasting First,” but also even stick around long enough to lend his unmistakable southpaw to the recording. The track starts abruptly — as if someone inadvertently jostled a power cord loose — joining the action in-progress. Ostensibly, Hendrix’s instrumental interaction is the impetus behind the number, but it is Lee’s sorely underappreciated lyrical abilities that turn it into a bluesy love ballad. The catchy “Flying” typifies the early-’70s boogie that Jo Jo Gunne was able cash in on. Otherwise, it is pretty much fluff. Considerably more interesting is the heavier poppy (think the Raspberries) sound of “Gimi a Little Break” with engaging chord progressions that conjure up Lee’s work on “August” from their previous outing Four Sail (1969). The concert extract “Stand Out” — a prime example of Love’s aforementioned on-stage unity — does just that as the spirited side was derived from the then-recent round of live dates that preceded False Start’s creation. It’s packed with a compact, hard-edged energy that could be mistaken for Grand Funk or even a mellowed-out MC5. Proving his uncanny ability to jump from genre to genre, Lee heads down-home for the countrified “Keep on Shining” with … |

HT Stage 60 Guitar Combo Amp $899.99 The HT Stage is a highly versatile amplifier suited to a wide range of playing styles and situations. The Clean Channel has two modes, boutique and modern and its own Bass and Treble tone controls providing the widest possible range of clean tones. The Voice switch reconfigures both the preamplifier voicing and gain structure, and also the power amplifier damping to reproduce either ringing Class A performance in the boutique mode, or very clean and tight Class AB tones in the modern setting. The HT Stage has two overdrive channels which share a common EQ section and like the Clean Channel, each of the overdrive channels have Voice switches which allow the character of each channel to be changed, providing a broad palette of overdriven tones. The overdrive channels are characterized by a tone, which is high in gain, but lacks any of the detached top-end fizz often found in similar designs. This is a result of unique preamplifier and power amplifier shaping techniques, which also benefit the player in the way the overdrives clean up beautifully as the guitar volume is reduced.Even at the most extreme settings, the overdrive channels remain natural sounding. The Patent-Applied-For ISF (Infinite Shape Feature) control is unique to Blackstar Amplification and represents a major step forward in tone shaping flexibility. The ISF control shifts the response of the three-control tone stack between a US type response at one end, and at the other a UK type response. Importantly, in between the two extremes, lie an infinite number of alternative tone choices that would be otherwise unavailable. The amplifier also features a completely natural sounding digital reverb, which is outstandingly musical on both clean and crunch tones and raises the benchmark for guitar amplifier specific reverb design. A Dark/Bright switch allows the overall reverb characteristics to be modified to suit different tastes and playing styles. |

Living the Blues [UK] $24.98 Some have dismissed Canned Heat’s third album Living the Blues (1968), primarily owing to the nearly three-quarter-hour long “Refried Boogie” jam that inhabits the second half of the effort. However, that did not stop it from scoring in the Top 20, which was not bad for a double LP. One obvious reason for its accomplishments is that the remainder of the title continues in the same solid vein as their previous LP, Boogie With Canned Heat (1968), issued merely a few months earlier. The quintet of Alan “Blind Owl” Wilson (guitar/vocals), Larry “The Mole” Taylor (bass), Henry “Sunflower” Vestine (guitar), Aldolfo “Fido” Dela Parra (drums), and Bob “The Bear” Hite (vocals) return with the same aggressive blend of amplified rock with rhythm and blues. They also churn out some impressive self-penned tunes, as well as unique derivations of tunes, such as their interpretation of Charley Patton’s “Pony Blues.” Immediately the inspired interplay between Wilson and Vestine proves as successful a combination here as it had on the band’s prior outings. The organic and lighter “Goin’ Up the Country” became the Heat’s second major single, and is arguably best-remembered for its prominence in the film Woodstock (1970) and its subsequent triple-LP soundtrack. Expanding beyond their own formidable instrumental prowess, British blues guitarist John Mayall sits in — on piano no less — for a short yet effective rendition of Jimmie Rodgers’ “Walking by Myself.” Augmenting the combo on the original “Boogie Music” is another rising ivory-tickler known to many as the “Gris-gris man,” and still to others as Mac Rebennack. However, it’s Dr. John under which the Creole-based pianist garnered the most attention. “One Kind Favor” [aka "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean"] is another standard that is given a decidedly modern workout. The sidelong, nine-movement epic “Parthenogenesis” is an experimental suite that allows each band member copious room to move. Among the… |

Mandali $19.98 Mandali is Africando’s fifth album and features no less than eleven of the world’s greatest singers. It is nonstop dance music and salsa of the highest caliber. The only things missing are the slower cha-chas and son montunos featured on the earlier albums. The horns are fat and fiery as ever and Boncana Maiga’s arrangements are tight and sparkling. The various vocalists’ timbres and tones provide a textural variety that would not be present if the album featured only one vocalist. Here we get nasal West African vocals from Mali, Senegal, and Guinea, Congolese intonations, Beninois inflections, Haitian twists, Cuban sonero sounds, Puerto Rican salsero touches, and Burkina Faso tinges. This is truly an African-Caribbean band and music; as stated in the liner notes, it is a veritable vocal summit. “Mandali” is an older song originally done by the famous Gambian group, Super Eagles. Here Medoune Diallo of Senegal turns on the steam with his silky vocal. The percussion and piano provide the propulsion. “Miye Na We” is a hot m? lange of Antillean melody and Latin percussive power. “Pepita,” a Boncana Maiga composition, is given robust treatment by Hector Casanova of El Gran Combo, Puerto Rico’s legendary group. “Betece” checks in at number eight on the play list with fat hot horns, tres guitar, rippling charanga flute, and a fine bass rhythm. The vocal on this track is by Amadou Balake, one Burkino Faso’s national treasures. “Scanadalo” (“Scandal in the Family”), by Trinidad’s Sir Lancelot, is given a Haitian Creole-Latin tinge by Shoubou of Tabou Combo. It’s African salsa, Cuban son, Puerto Rican salsa. It’s Africa and the Caribbean at their best coming together in New York City, the capital of the world. Here are some of the world’s most gifted musicians giving and taking from each other in continual musical interchange and interplay. This is what the members of Africando do best. They have done it again and they are on fire. Highly recommended. ~ Mark R… |

Together as One $9.99 When Aston “Family Man” Barrett heard Elan’s demo, the ears of the Wailers bassist immediately pricked up. Given Junior Marvin’s departure, the Wailers needed a frontman, and Barrett was immediately convinced they’d found his replacement. One listen to Together as One’s title track explains why the Wailers snapped Elan up. This glorious number’s gorgeous melody, acoustic guitar-laced arrangement, and unity theme all echo of Bob Marley’s own “Redemption Song.” However, dancehall fans will note the track’s equally striking similarities to Buju Banton’s “Untold Stories.” And it’s this ability to beautifully blend both new and old, speaking simultaneously to young and old, that is Elan’s strongest suit. “I Wanna Yell” also reverberates with a Marley-esque sound, although in this case, with its modern reggae flavor and bouncy melody, it’s Stephen who springs to mind. Elsewhere, “My Kingston Girl,” which resurrects an old rocksteady melody and is brushed with harmonies, recalls the Wailers’ days at Studio One. “You Don’t Come Around No More” also has a lovely revival feel to the riddim, but here Elan leaves the Marleys behind and strides straight into R&B-flavored dancehall, accompanied by Cutty Ranks, whose sharp toasts provide an authentic island-style feel to the number. Gwen Stefani helps take this hybrid sound into even lusher pastures on “All Nighter.” Then again, Elan can handle dancehall in any of its varieties, be it the sweet singing/tough toaster combo of the reggaeton-tinged “Girl,” where he’s paired with Assassin, or DJing himself across the techno-flavored drum’n'bass-driven “Feel My Pressure.” Intriguingly, on another combo number, “Don’t You Go,” dancehall surfs right into new wave, while Tami Chynn toasts up a storm on top and Elan sings out sweetly below. He rides solo on “Do Right by You,” another powerful number, this time on a roots reggae riddim that’s again frothing with new wave influences. It’s a heady mix of sounds and st… |

USED: Half Pint $7.99 This best-of compilation was selected by Half Pint himself and draws on the handful of releases he put out on reggae-specialist and Jamaican labels. That’s fine, but it also makes you wonder why this excellent singer who delivered two absolute classics right out of the career gate is still something of a reggae enigma. Hell, “Greetings” only launched and named the raggamuffin bassline/ragga sound that had a huge global impact in the late ’80s and early ’90s — okay, maybe not quite the formative impact that Chic’s “Good Times” (with that Bernard Edwards bassline) had on hip-hop, but we’re still talking serious foundation archetype here. “Level the Vibes” was also an unforgettable slice of mid-’80s roots dancehall era (i.e., pre-tape loops and drum machine beats) with another deadly nonstop bassline. So it’s puzzling why his profile in reggae circles has remained so low. Not that he should have gone in for the Dennis Brown/Gregory Issacs/Frankie Paul syndrome and recorded with everyone under the sun, but he’s only put out a handful of albums and rarely did the deejay/singer combo records with contemporaries who seem like a natural fit. It’s more troubling that, once you’ve heard the opening salvo of “Greetings”/”Level the Vibes,” you’ve basically heard Half Pint, because he seems unwilling or unable to stray far away from his formula. The Spartan arrangements will be bass and drums with skank keyboard or guitar and not much else behind his plaintive, emotional singing about girls and little else, since he seems to have used up his metaphor quotient with the two big hits. So small differences become big deals here, like a modified bogle beat with syndrum bloops on “Crazy Girl,” the horns marking “Mr. Landlord,” and a livelier drum push distinguishing “Too Late.” “Sally” has an arresting variation on the raggamuffin bassline and some dub flair, and the pure lovers rock of “Substitute Lover” stretches with double-tracked chorus vocals and very sou… |

USED: NEW EVERYTHING 0702 $7.98 Best known in 2002, if they were known at all, for providing incidental music to several episodes of the television show Homicide: Life on the Street, Big Lazy is an instrumental trio that could only come from New York City. Influenced by the ambient jazz and dark rhythms the city conjures up, the combo is led by guitarist Stephen Ulrich, whose lonely, terse, reverbed leads sound like the menacing back alleys and threatening tunnels so common to life in the Big Apple. On their third album, the three-piece augments their stark, often ominous sound with occasional horns (used to striking effect on the opening “Train Travel”), percussion, and even eerie wordless vocals on “The Hill,” but generally sticks to the bass-drums-guitar format. A romp through Charles Mingus’ “Meditation (For a Pair of Wire Cutters)” pushes them even further outside the confines of a traditional three-piece, but the band is most comfortable walking the dimly lit side streets that inform the work of Tom Waits, especially on the evocative shadows created by the slow-boil tom-toms of “Our Lady of the Highways.” The austere and ghostly black-and-white photos of the group that adorn the disc perfectly capture their offbeat atmosphere on this superbly played and conceived album. Few bands create music this dramatic, striking, and powerful, especially with only three instruments and no vocals. Creepy and captivating. ~ Hal Horowitz, All Music Guide |
