25th Anniversary: Live in Amsterdam [DVD & CD] $19.98 Toto’s career has been a rather strange one. Several top-flight Los Angeles session musicians — many of whom performed on Boz Scaggs’ classic 1976 album Silk Degrees — formed Toto and achieved instant success with their 1978 self-titled debut album. Commercial success was fairly consistent, but many critics never liked Toto and the band’s pariah status was forever sealed when 1982′s Toto IV won the Grammy award for Album of the Year. Toto found their selling power in the U. S. fade in the ’90s while their star status in Europe and Asia shot upward; their mainstream U.S. pop/rock style probably sounded exotic to overseas audiences. Despite several personnel changes, the band never gave up. They celebrated their 25th anniversary with a concert at the Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on February 17, 2003. This show was filmed for the enjoyable DVD 25th Anniversary: Live in Amsterdam (a CD version is also available). Vocalist/guitarist Steve Lukather, vocalist/keyboardist David Paich, vocalist Bobby Kimball, bass guitarist Mike Porcaro, and drummer Simon Phillips (along with supplemental guitarist/background vocalist Tony Spinner and keyboardist/background vocalist John Jessel) were on tour promoting 2002′s covers album Through the Looking Glass when they made this recording, and the DVD finds Toto performing giant hits such as “Africa,” “I Won’t Hold You Back,” “Rosanna,” and “Hold the Line” along with plenty of intriguing album tracks. “Girl Goodbye,” “Goodbye Elenore,” “Child’s Anthem,” and “I’ll Supply the Love” open the show in the form of a lengthy medley. “Gift with a Golden Gun” is one of the in-concert rarities. Through the Looking Glass is represented by the Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” Steely Dan’s “Bodhisattva,” and the Temptations’ “I Can’t Get Next to You.” (It’s interesting to note that while many Toto members had performed on Steely Dan recordings, “Bodhisattva” and its parent Countdown to Ecstasy …

Jefferson Airplane concert at O’Keefe Center on 05 Aug 67 $5.98 This run of shows represents one of the first Jefferson Airplane and Grateful Dead excursion outside the United States. Bill Graham financed the presentation of these two seminal San Francisco bands for a week of shows at Toronto’s O’Keefe Center. On this last day of the run, both early and late shows were performed. This recording is Jefferson Airplane’s afternoon show which is relatively short but features an excellent performance. By August of 1967, Grace Slick had been fully integrated into the band and her confidence level had dramatically increased since her initial shows in late 1966. She was quickly becoming the visual focal point – as well as an icon – of the San Francisco music scene. The band’s sound was changing as well, heading in a far more experimental direction. The sessions for their most challenging and exploratory album, After Bathing at Baxter’s, were still in progress, and the heavy psychedelic flavor of those sessions was permeating the sound of the group’s live performances. This afternoon set begins appropriately enough, with the band’s current hit single “Somebody To Love.” While played very close to the studio arrangement, it’s apparent that a new, heavier sound is beginning to emerge in this version. Casady’s bass playing and Kaukonen’s guitar techniques are becoming more aggressive and distinctive. Kaukonen’s “She Has Funny Cars” exemplifies this further before the band ventures into new material. These are possibly the earliest surviving live recordings of “Two Heads” and “Young Girl Sunday Blues” in existence – two songs that would be featured on the Baxter’s album later that year. “Two Heads,” one of Slick’s earliest original contributions to the group, reveals her gift for writing intriguing lyrics that work on multiple levels; it’s fascinating hearing both of these songs in their early, embryonic states. No Chance Baby! $16.98 Gary, Indiana is not a town known for being a rock & roll hot spot, so Oscar & the Majestics’ status as the best band in town in the mid-’60s might not seem like much, but the recordings they left behind suggest they could have moved to a number of bigger, cooler cities and still been close to the top of the heap. Leader Oscar Hamod has a voice that capably fused soul and garage rock influences, his fierce, agile guitar work roared with energy and attitude, and his backing combo — Robert Wheeler on rhythm guitar, Sam Hamod on bass, Vince Jacim on drums — was a rock-solid rhythm section that could also deliver great harmonies. Oscar & the Majestics cut a handful of fine tunes for Chicago’s USA Records label, which were included on Sundazed Records’ 2009 collection 2131 South Michigan Avenue: 60′s Garage & Psychedelia from USA and Destination Records; on No Chance, Baby!, Sundazed fills the gaps in the band’s history by including all their USA releases, as well as the singles the band released on their own label, delivering everything they released in the decade. This collection follows the Majestics as they evolved from R&B and blue-eyed soul into tougher rock & roll material, ending with their proto-psychedelic cover of “House of the Rising Sun.” Despite the presence of red-hot covers of “I Can’t Explain” and “Soul Finger,” originals dominate this collection, though you might not guess that on first listen; while Oscar & the Majestics were clearly a talented band, their songwriting was quite derivative, and “Why-O” bears a certain resemblance to “Stranded in the Jungle,” “I Feel Good” favors “Til the End of the Day,” “Fanny Brown” pretty much is “Farmer John,” and “Come on Willie” could pass for a speeded-up “Hang on Sloopy” in dim light. But if the band didn’t have a gift for dreaming up great riffs, they could play the hell out of anything they approached, and No Chance, Baby! proves that Gary’s finest were one of the great acts on the M…

USED: Live from Austin TX [DVD] $10.99 Following the release of her third album Blacklisted, Neko Case’s reputation was beginning to expand beyond the boundaries of the alt-country community when she appeared on the celebrated roots music television showcase Austin City Limits, and Live from Austin, TX preserves the full 14-song set Case played for ACL’s studio audience on August 9, 2003. Case’s accompaniment is simple and spare on this set — Jon Rauhouse on guitar, banjo and pedal steel, Tom V. Ray on bass and Kelly Hogan on vocal harmonies — but Case’s warm, rich voice is big enough to fill the room all by itself, and her partners provide just the right accents for the sad but resonant songs that dominate this performance. Perhaps Case’s greatest virtue is her ability to sing with strength and authority without sounding histrionic, and that gift dominates this album; listen to her take on “Deep Red Bells” and you’ll notice that while she gives a passionate performance that’s deeply emotional and physically expressive, she has an intuitive sense of when to go full out and when to ease back, and the dynamics of the number are gorgeous, especially with just Rauhouse’s banjo and Ray’s bass filling out the arrangement. Live from Austin, TX is less ambitious than Case’s 2004 live effort The Tigers Have Spoken, in terms of both accompaniment and material, but there’s a simplicity and cohesion to this set that’s beautiful and satisfying, and anyone who has been impressed with the artistry of her studio work (especially 2006′s brilliant Fox Confessor Brings the Flood) will want to hear this concert in which her voice is given free reign. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
