Becoming Acquainted With Your Bass Guitar
As a way to start off actively playing a bass guitar, or any kind of instrument for instance, it is always a good idea to learn pretty much everything about it initially. Why? It is simply because you won’t survive through a session without learning a few technical terms. The terms were not built to make your life more complicated, remember that. They’re really designed to make learning feasible by being familiar with all facets and outlining its function. This should actually be the very first thing that you excel at when learning how to play your bass guitar.
In the event you still have no idea, this is actually the best moment to take a glimpse of the parts of the bass guitar. Creative imagination is key, but it will be far better to get hold of the guitar so we can assess its parts one at a time.
Keeping the bass guitar with it's head up, the spot where the logo is printed, let us begin our initial lesson.
Headstock- is where the logo of the guitar is normally noticeable. This area holds the turning pegs and the nut.
Turning Pegs- also known as machine heads. It holds the opposite end of the strings, that makes it easy to rotate the knobs to improve the key of a specified string at the appropriate time.
Neck- is the portion of the bass guitar which has the fretboard as well as frets. It is long; it has the strings crossing it and it is connected to the body of the guitar. Within the neck could be the truss rod, which aids in lowering tension around the neck.
Frets- are slim metals connected to the fretboard, that is on the neck of one's bass guitar. It is used to customize the degree of the string’s vibration, creating the sounds different in every single strum.
Body- is where all of the controls plus transistors are. It is the spot where you can see the pickups, a couple of rectangular pieces located just after the end of the neck, that allows the conversion of audio for amplification. The bridge is within the body as well, holding each of the strings together.
An additional thing on the body of the bass guitar are the knobs, which definitely control the high quality and also volume of sound. Lastly, the output jack is a very small thing sticking out of the guitar. It is the places you attach a wire associated with an amplifier for a improved sound effect.
Now you know the elements of the bass guitar, you’re prepared to begin browsing some self-help books on how to play it. You should not pause and seek out meanings to be able to understand it. So, what are you waiting around for? Let’s rock and roll!

Bass guitar makes a strange rattling noise all of a sudden …?
I have an electric bass guitar, this is a very cheap little thing, nothing fancy ((the headstock says "Standard S101," so I would imagine that this type of guitar .. hmm, never heard of it, lol)). Although it is not a fancy guitar, as it gave me much trouble, aside from a little too much action on the strings, but I've been able the government. However, as of recently, when I pluck a string, I get a strange buzzing or rattling noise, including the signs, of course. This happens when almost all the courage I EA and strings, but also a lower level in the D, and not so much to all of G. I do not have any idea where It can come from … any idea what the problem could be? Any help would be greatly appreciated … I use it for gigging bass, so to get it taken care of is in my best interest … especially considering I do not have the money to buy a new one … ((Broke college kid, it …)) Thanks in advance.
hmm … adjust the trust rod … I consider time, activities that may have changed … and now although you cannot really see it, the strings are hitting against a verry picups lightly.

Alligator $16.98 The National may sound like a garage band turned down, but there’s as much primal energy lurking behind Alligator as in any mop-topped group of city kids with bloodstained Danelectros in a dusty warehouse. While Matt Berninger’s lyrics and conversational delivery rely heavily on the kind of literate self-absorption that fuels so much of the indie rock scene today, he never comes off as preachy or unaware that the world would manage just fine without him; rather, he uses metaphor and humor as bullet points for a profound sense of displacement and anger. Out-of-the-blue statements like “f*ck me and make me a drink,” from the brooding but lovely “Karen,” are effective because the listener is brought into the story slowly, almost amiably, before being led to the plank. Berninger’s wry, filthy, and often eloquently sad tales of materialism, sex, and loneliness are augmented by the stellar duel-sibling attack of Aaron Dessner (guitar) and Bryce Dessner (guitar) and Scott Devendorf (guitar/bass) and Bryan Devendorf (drums), who flesh out each track with so many little creative flourishes that it takes a few listens to break them down into palatable portions. There are upbeat moments found within — “Lit Up” and “Looking for Astronauts” — but for the most part the National are content with playing the genial fatalists, and while “All the Wine” seems designed to serve as the record’s desolate backbone, “Baby, We’ll Be Fine,” with its quick changes, lush orchestration, and winsome refrain of “I’m so sorry for everything” is, despite an elegiac delivery, Alligator’s loneliest track, and like each part of this fine collection of city-weary poetry, it’s as brief as it is affecting. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi |

Barnyard Dance: Jug Band Music for Kids $13.98 As Maria Muldaur puts it in her liner notes, jug band music is, by its very nature, a “happy, snappy, lighthearted, humorous, goofy, wacky, high-spirited” sound, which certainly would appeal to any child. Why this now-marginalized genre — born in the ’20s and popularized in the ’60s via acts such as the Jim Kweskin Jug Band and the Even Dozen Jug Band (of which Muldaur was a member) — was never marketed with kids in mind is a good question, but Muldaur hits the perfect note with this collection. Played on washboards, spoons, kazoo, and other fun instruments — as well as guitar, banjo, bass, fiddle, et. al. — these old songs, with titles like “I Love to Ride My Camel” (wonder if it’s the same camel Muldaur sent to bed on her ’70s hit “Midnight at the Oasis”), “Under the Chicken Tree,” and “Singing in the Bathtub” are whimsical and silly, yet never condescending as so much children’s music tends to be. Muldaur’s voice is huskier than it was back when she was making her popular albums in the ’70s, but it’s well-suited to these tunes. This is what she started out doing half-a-century ago, and adults with a soft spot for the jug band-folk style, and for Muldaur’s output in recent years, will undoubtedly enjoy this music — much of it from the traditional folk canon — as much as their little ones. ~ Jeff Tamarkin, Rovi |

Berlin $11.98 Transformer and “Walk on the Wild Side” were both major hits in 1972, to the surprise of both Lou Reed and the music industry, and with Reed suddenly a hot commodity, he used his newly won clout to make the most ambitious album of his career, Berlin. Berlin was the musical equivalent of a drug-addled kid set loose in a candy store; the album’s songs, which form a loose story line about a doomed romance between two chemically fueled bohemians, were fleshed out with a huge, boomy production (Bob Ezrin at his most grandiose) and arrangements overloaded with guitars, keyboards, horns, strings, and any other kitchen sink that was handy (the session band included Jack Bruce, Steve Winwood, Aynsley Dunbar, and Tony Levin). And while Reed had often been accused of focusing on the dark side of life, he and Ezrin approached Berlin as their opportunity to make The Most Depressing Album of All Time, and they hardly missed a trick. This all seemed a bit much for an artist who made such superb use of the two-guitars/bass/drums lineup with the Velvet Underground, especially since Reed doesn’t even play electric guitar on the album; the sheer size of Berlin ultimately overpowers both Reed and his material. But if Berlin is largely a failure of ambition, that sets it apart from the vast majority of Reed’s lesser works; Lou’s vocals are both precise and impassioned, and though a few of the songs are little more than sketches, the best — “How Do You Think It Feels,” “Oh, Jim,” “The Kids,” and “Sad Song” — are powerful, bitter stuff. It’s hard not to be impressed by Berlin, given the sheer scope of the project, but while it earns an A for effort, the actual execution merits more of a B-. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Dreams of the Carrion Kind [Bonus Tracks] $14.99 Disincarnate’s only album, Dreams of the Carrion Kind, was ostensibly the much anticipated “solo” showcase for journeyman guitarist James Murphy, whose personal legend had been built, almost entirely, upon a series of brief but highly praised cameos with influential bands Obituary, Death, and Cancer. As much as his capabilities as a principal songwriter and bandleader, however, Dreams became a living document of instrumental overindulgence gone ape, having been released near the zenith of the Floridian death metal scene’s technical-cerebral maturity. As such, the album virtually requires that listeners approach it with a student’s curiosity for inaccessible sounds and sheer technique, because nothing here is what you’d call “immediate” by any stretch of the definition (so be prepared to take notes while you mosh, kids!). Heck, even all these years later, staple Disincarnate offerings such as “Stench of Paradise Burning,” “Beyond the Flesh,” “Soul Erosion,” and “Deadspawn” (several of them co-written by rhythm guitarist Jason Carman) still shock and awe with their Byzantine architecture and constant riff and tempo changes. Collectively, they may not plumb the same mind-numbing depths of complexity as, say, Suffocation, but amid the daunting cascade of slushy-thick riffs, sledgehammer percussion from Tommy Viator, and spiraling harmonic streaks (captured with stunning effect in the classic “Confine of Shadows”), the only real “hooks” on hand are proffered by Murphy’s stunningly accomplished, famously melodic solo flights. The guitarist also contributes mostly invisible bass guitar throughout (quite typical for the style), while frontman Bryan Cegon proves himself a perfectly competent but really rather average death metal vocalist — both in terms of his run-of-the-mill Cookie Monster growl and lyrics that read like some sort of scary but oddly didactic catalog of the dark side. (On a trivia note: My Dying Bride singer Aaron Stainthorpe appears on t… |

The Bronx [White Drugs] $14.99 The Bronx’s self-titled debut is a beautifully violent exhibition of pure punk rock. No pogo-pouncing guitar licks or aggro-happy vocals fit the ambitious agenda of this SoCal four-piece, nor do they hold the pretense held by most post-grunge rock kids. The Bronx are dead serious with their craft; they’re uncompromising without being disconcerting, allowing this powerhouse release to make an impression. Sure, criticizing the America’s conservative value system may be more than overdone, but if you’re able to say something new, it’s relevant and that’s exactly what makes The Bronx an interesting first album. Themes of direction and rejection carry this manic, red-hot cardinal set with producer Gilby Clarke at the helm. As soon as “Heart Attack American” kicks things off, the Bronx immediately blast you with a Stooges-meets-Fugazi jolt. Matt Caughthran’s vocals are not only a frenzied mess, but they’re scathingly convincing. Joby J. Ford (guitar), James Tweedy (bass), and Jorma Vik (drums) make for a sharp backup section, and songs like “White Tar” and “Notice of Eviction” thrive on the band’s personal revolt against what’s mediocre and typically popularized. In classic punk style, The Bronx rage against the machine just enough to irk you — and it’s never felt so good. ~ MacKenzie Wilson, Rovi |

USED: Johnny Cash Remixed $5.98 Johnny Cash earned his legendary status with his music and his life. In a career that stretches from the dawn of commercial country and pop music to the dawn of the 21st century, he made his rep as an artist of uncommon integrity. Too bad the same can’t be said for his record labels. Even before he passed, his music was subjected to a massive repackaging and reissue program, and Johnny Cash Remixed continues the trend, with the expected unfortunate results. Who knows what Cash thought about hip-hop, but it’s hard to believe he would have enjoyed this bastardization of his work. The collection was produced by John Carter Cash and Snoop Dogg, and while it has its amusing moments, the original Sun Recordings Cash made in the 50s will still sound timeless long after the junk on this album has faded from memory. “I Walk the Line” gets smothered by Snoop Dogg’s big, bass heavy production; “Get Rhythm” is transformed into an electro-funk track with the original track broken into snippets and sprinkled onto the pounding backbeats; “Doin’ My Time” sounds like a soul band cover with Cash making a brief “appearance” near the end of the track; Alabama 3, the guys who recorded the song that became the theme for The Sopranos use a snippet of “Leave That Junk Alone” but reinvent the track as their own. Machine Drum’s “Belshazzar” remix leeches all the drama out of the song, and Apparat’s take on “I Heard That Lonesome Whistle Blow” also tries to make a desolate song more desolate by adding industrial sound effects, but the effort is wasted. On the positive tip, as the kids would say, there’s Count de Money’s remix of “Big River,” which adds a few dub effects and an electric guitar solo that isn’t bad, but is unnecessary. Sonny J’s “Country Boy” breaks up Cash’s solo and makes it sound like a rap, complemented by gospel-esque female vocals, while on “Folsom Prison Blues,” Pete Rock adds slide guitar (probably from Carter Cash) and a thumping club beat, but th… |
