Of course there’s the guitar itself, which can be purchased used for surprisingly cheap or borrowed from a friend or relative, but what about all of the extra accessories and associated costs that have a nasty way of ambushing aspiring musicians? You’ve got things like picks, strings, tuners, capos, plus music books on beginning practice, theory, popular songs, scales, and, if you’re really serious about it, one on one lessons with a personal instructor. All of these things add up and not everyone has the pocket change to spare, so what are some of the alternatives?

Buying Used

This may seem like a no-brainer; after all, you bought the guitar itself used. Surprisingly enough many people may look for used deals for the instrument itself but consider individual items like strings the sort of thing you have to buy from a music store. After all, who wants to mess with used strings? For one thing, just because you’re buying used doesn’t mean the product has actually been used. Many, many people have aspired to learn the guitar before you, and for one reason or another many of them have given it up.

People oftentimes will take up a new hobby and spend gobs of money getting all of the fancy things that are supposed to go with it, only to find later they don’t have the time or inclination or perseverance. In these cases they’ll offer up highly discounted lots of miscellaneous stuff, for example: “guitar strings, picks, tuner, beginners books CHEAP – bought six months ago intended to learn don’t have the time, will sell cheap” – we’ve all seen the ads. Scouring yard sales is another way to find these kinds of deals. Another unique way to find cheap stuff is to post “in search of” ads to the classifieds, which leads into my next point.

Taking Advantage of Online Resources

As popular as Craigslist has become, many people still don’t even know that it exists. It is extremely valuable for posting the kind of wanted ads I mentioned, as well as for finding those killer deals on used things in the first place. eBay is another great tool to use, though the items for sale usually aren’t quite as cheap since there’s shipping involved and no room for bargaining. Simply running a search for the item or items you’re looking for plus a few choice keywords, such as “classifieds” or the name of your city plus the words “for sale” will also generally yield good results.

All that is only dealing with the physical goods associated with learning guitar, but what about the actual learning process itself? Again, the Internet is your closest ally. Websites have sprung up in the last dozen or so years on every subject imaginable, and learning guitar is definitely one of them. There’s innumerable websites with free instructional ebooks, information on beginner’s scales and riffs, techniques, even video tutorials on sites like YouTube. All of this for free!

The process of learning anything has been so radically simplified by the Internet and all of the free information it supplies, the only thing you actually have to do anymore is learn. And now more than ever, there’s no reason at all why you can’t.

Crossword Puzzle $7.99 Crossword Puzzle was the eighth LP from the Partridge Family — a multimedia, made-for-TV project that hit marketing pay dirt learning lessons from the success of the Monkees’ manufactured origins, as well as the real-life pop/rock family the Cowsills. As a weekly prime time sitcom, The Partridge Family ran on ABC-TV from September 25, 1970, through August 31, 1974. As musical artists, they further mimicked the Monkees’ phenomenon by having primary cast members — in this case, Shirley Jones (vocals) and David Cassidy (vocals) — as the group’s lead vocalists. Accompanying Cassidy and Jones was a veritable who’s who of studio heavyweights such as Hal Blaine (drums), Larry Carlton (guitar), Joe Osborne (bass), and Larry Knechtel (keyboards). They were joined by the painfully sweet backing vocals of the six-member Love Generation, who participated to some degree on every one of the Partridge Family’s LPs. Judging by not only the lackluster chart performance (number 146), but also the complete absence of a 45 rpm single in the States, it is fair to say all remaining vestiges of Partridge-mania were becoming significantly depleted. For the most part, the formulaic unaffected pop song style of Wes Farrell, Terry Cashman, and Tommy West had grown stale. In fact the best material on Crossword Puzzle comes from Tony Romeo’s lush emotive ballad “As Long as There’s You,” which points in the direction of Cassidy’s solo efforts. Of the lighter fare, another Romeo tune, “It Means I’m in Love With You,” has an airy bubblegum lilt that glides through the catchy melody. These highlights detract from the simply awful “Let Your Love Go” or the half-baked “It’s a Long Way to Heaven” — both of which are little more than mediocre filler. Kaleidoscope aka Live at Topanga Corral $24.98 This is one of the strongest documents to feature Canned Heat in concert. However, contrary to the title, these performances are not from the Topanga Corral — where the Heat were the house band off and on during the mid-1960s. Instead, it was later revealed the origins were actually from a Los Angeles club called the Kaleidoscope circa 1968. They most likely hail from the same batch of tapes that yielded the 4-plus-minute epic “Refried Boogie,” which spread over Sides Three and Four on the Living the Blues (1968) two-LP package. The personnel includes Alan “Blind Owl” Wilson (guitar/harmonica/vocals), Larry “The Mole” Taylor (bass), Henry “Sunflower” Vestine (guitar), Bob “The Bear” Hite (vocals), and Aldolfo “Fito” de la Parra (drums). Indeed, these recordings were made prior to the rapid drug-related decline and eventual replacement of Vestine — who is actually in top flight throughout — with Harvey Mandel in mid-1969. Another factor in the chronology is the soulful interpretation of standard blues numbers, which would be incrementally abandoned for longer and more rambling psychedelic jams by the time of Live in Europe (1970). However, the difference between the early 1970s incarnation and this ‘classic’ lineup seems to lie primarily in their respective approaches. This seminal aggregate explores more traditional outlets such as the languid approach to B.B. King’s “Sweet Sixteen,” sporting some incendiary fretwork from the coupling of Wilson’s smooth slide and Vestine’s sinuous and punctuating leads. The former further exemplifies his bottleneck prowess on a rollicking reading of Elmore James’ “Dust My Broom” that swings solid from tip to tail. As does the upbeat and slightly Creole-flavored “I Wish You Would,” landing somewhere between the Yardbirds’ aggressive take and Billy Boy Arnold’s original. Make Yourself a Happening Machine: A Collection $13.98 When considering the geographical origins of the paisley underground movement of the early ’80s, the Midwest isn’t the first place you would think of. During the West Coast uprising of bands like Dream Syndicate, Rain Parade, Thin White Rope, the Three O’Clock, and Green on Red, the Milwaukee-based Plasticland had already been knee-deep in psychedelia due, in part, to the rare record-collecting fetish of founding members Glenn Rehse (vocals, guitar, organ) and John Frankovic (bass). From the get-go, Plasticland bypassed the darker Velvet Underground influence that most bands of the era were paying lip service to. Their goal was to pursue a brighter, more melodic musical approach, thus avoiding pointless jamming behind walls of feedback when lacking inspiration. Instead, they embraced the sights and sounds of early British flower-power pop initiated 15 years earlier by such influences as Tomorrow, Pink Floyd with Syd Barrett, the Smoke, and the Creation. The 30 tracks on Make Yourself a Happening Machine: A Collection gather on CD for the first time the best from their albums, EPs, flexi-discs, and various compilations, some of it having been out of print for years. The sound quality here is uniformly excellent, as are the detailed liner notes by Nigel Cross. As is the case with the Cramps’ timeless approach to rockabilly, Plasticland didn’t simply ape retro pseudo-psychedelia; they are everlastingly there and you’re along for the ride.
