Paramore- Defining New Standards For Pop Punk
There’s been a recent deluge in Paramore merch. That’s thanks largely to the band’s involvement in the hit teen movie, Twilight. The soundtrack for the movie feature’s the group’s Decode and I Caught Myself. For certain though, with the level of passion that the band pours into its work, its members would mostly likely take offense at being labeled merely as that band that played for Twilight.
For purposes of categorization, Paramore’s music is mainly considered emo or pop punk. This isn’t a strict definition of their work though because Paramore is almost an anti thesis of conventional punk. Whining and angst are reduced to a minimum and abrasiveness is shown with a purpose. The group’s music is emotional without being irritating.
Many music fans consider Paramore to be more mature than other punk artists. This is unexpected since the group is almost rooted on a youthful image. The members are all grown ups now but they began their road to stardom when they were barely out of primary school. Before Paramore albums became the hottest things, they were just young musicians enjoying themselves in a garage. Vocalist Williams was just fourteen and drummer Zac Farro was just twelve. Rounding up the first members were lead guitarist Josh Farro, bassist Jeremy Davis and rhythm guitarist Jason Bynum. Hayley Williams was and still is the only female in the group which possibly accounts for the band’s unique dynamics.
The group’s debut album All We Know is Falling was released in 2005. For a first release, the album’s theme is unusual. The work was inspired by what the members felt when Jeremy Davis left. The album is therefore deeply emotional but is at the same time close to conventional pop punk. Despite being close to what people would expect from pop punk though, the album failed to generate tremendous success for the group. Later in the year, Davis returned but Bynum was replaced by Hunter Lamb who also later left.
At the beginning of 2007, the creation of more Paramore albums seemed obvious. It was on this year that Riot! came out and entered the Billboard 200 at 20. Although it didn’t debut with a bang, the album did reach platinum in the U.S. At around the same time the band tasted their first success, Taylor York came in as rhythm guitarist to replace Lamb.
There was more in store for the group in 2008. They took center stage on Alternative Press’ February cover after they were voted 2007’s best band by readers. To top this recognition, they were nominated for a Grammy Award. Shortly after this, they launched their first tour called The Final Riot. By the end of it, two of their songs were already in the Twilight soundtrack. In September 2009, Brand New Eyes was released. It is the group’s most successful work in the charts to date.
There is no stopping the deluge of Paramore merchandise like music clothing. This is despite the rift rumors that have haunted and continue to haunt the group. Past rumored conflict revolved around the media’s focus on Hayley Williams. By all current appearances though, the group is as solid as platinum.

Get A Boost From All Time Low’s Music
In the music industry, the All Time Low discography from the American pop punk band of the same name is considered relatively young in more ways than one. The band was only formed in 2003 in Baltimore, Maryland. Also, its members are relatively young musicians in their early 20s, with front man Alexander Gaskarth just 23 years old as of this writing.
Despite the young ages of the band members however, the group seems all set for future stardom. They’ve only just began work but vocalist and lead guitarist Alexander Gaskarth; rhytm guitarist and backup vocalist Jack Bakarat, bass guitarist Zachary Merrick and drummer Rian Dawson are well on their way to making waves in the music scene.
Band Past
All Time Low started as a high school band, eighth grade level, to be exact, doing covers of the songs made popular by the pop punk bands Blink 182 and Green Day as well as its greatest influence, New Found Glory. In fact, the name of the band is directly taken from the lyrics of the song “Head On Collision” by the said band.
It didn’t take long for the group to eventually get out of their cover band status. The All Time Low music merch already boasts of a growing collection of work. They now have three albums, eight singles and two extended plays. A DVD is set for release this year.
Band Albums
Just a year after being formed, the band signed with Emerald Moon Records. The results of that deal included their debut EP titled “The Three Words to Remember in Dealing with the End” and the debut All Time Low album “The Party Scene” which was released in July 2005.
The band eventually moved on to Hopeless Records. The move to a new label ushered a new beginning for band members who weren’t even out of high school yet. The career move was a testament to the band’s talent and the fact that it pays to start early in the music industry. The first order of business for the group was the second recording of songs from their first album. They also added new songs to their EP. This put their work in the Top Heatseekers and Independent Albums charts. Clearly, All Time Low was already on the right road up.
The year 2007 marked a new development for the band as they began to move closer to mainstream music. The year was ushered in by the album “So Wrong, It’s Right.” In 2008, they were dubbed Band of the Year by the Alternative Press Magazine.
To highlight career improvements for the band, 2009, saw their collaboration with Mark Hoppus of Blink 182. This was for the third All Time Low album, “Nothing Personal.” This is the band’s most recent work and is available in both online and offline music stores. The group is said to be working on the release of their fourth album under the label Interscope Records.
It’s unusual that the band should be called All Time Low. Clearly they are cruising on an all time high. Fans and critics alike are eagerly waiting for fresh work from this promising pop punk group.
bass guitar rhythm track

Why can not I record tracks in sync?
I want to record music on my guitar, to plug into my microphone jack and record with courage. What I usually do is to record the first track [rhythm guitar, for example] and then record the next [track your bass or lead] as I listened to the first track, that way everything is synced up, as if it were live. But when I play back, the two tracks start out in sync but gradually become out of sync. The 2nd track always seems longer than the 1st track. Is there any way I can correct this, aside from manually moving each wave of sound to match up to the first track?
Somehow, you can sync the "tick" tracks. Thanks for tipping me off to your tasks. It was a big help to me. I do not know how to sync Ticks. You may want to browse in the shops Guitar magazine. Try recording the first track. And Play track AND your second track together, a recorder. and record both at the same time. Motor speed, Tape tension, along with other things that can make the recorders run out of sync. Videomaker is a good student one to look at. If you find one, buy it. Do not try to remember it.

Rhythm Collision, Vol. 1 $19.99 Personnel includes: Dave Winthrop (saxophone); John Segs (bass); Dave Ruffy (drums).Includes liner notes by Peter Wright.Full performer name: Ruts DC/Mad Professor/Zion TrainThis 2-CD collection contains the Ruts DC & Mad Professor album RHYTHM COLLISION DUB VOL. 1 (1982) plus the remixed version by Zion Train RHYTHM COLLISION REMIX (1999).Ruts DC: John Segs (vocals, guitar, bass); Paul Fox (vocals, guitar); Mitt (vocals, harmonica); David Ruffy (vocals, drums, percussion); Dave Winthrop (saxophone).Given the Ruts’ love for and incorporation of reggae into their most strident punk material, it shouldn’t have come as much surprise that they would eventually jump headlong into the more exploratory waters of dub. Dedicated to Malcolm Owen, the band’s lead singer who passed away two years prior, Rhythm Collision pairs the remaining Ruts in a sound clash with the then-upstart Mad Professor. The liner notes claim that no one was successful at the fusion of punk and dub until this record came out, which is a false proclamation. Three years prior to this release, PiL’s Metal Box, the Slits’ Cut, and the Pop Group’s Y were each released, all of which used dub as the sound anchor. So that is similar to saying that Nirvana’s Nevermind wouldn’t have gone where it did without Pearl Jam’s second album. But whatever. Unlike the other post-punk bands who were influenced by dub and mutated it into something of their own, Rhythm Collision sticks closer to the originating sound, rarely coming off like anything other than a late ’70s Trojan recording act. Buried piano motifs, melodica bleats, random percussive effects, head-spinning production techniques, and those deep, deep, deep basslines load the bases. Aside from sporadic vocal phrasings, it’s all instrumental. Most everything unwinds at a relaxed pace, save for “Push Yourself,” which would fit comfortably in a DJ set between Liquid Liquid and Grandmaster Flash. The most uncharacteristic track of the record, its handclaps, funky bassline, and Chic-like guitar flicks are capable of making the most dedicated Ruts fan forget who the artist is. As far as an homage to a style that’s provided inspiration, Rhythm Collision couldn’t have done much better. Thankfully, a couple labels have kept this still-exciting record in print throughout the years, most notably ROIR. ~ Andy Kellman |

Danny Gatton 2: Strictly Rhythm Guitar – Subtitle $19.99 Though Danny Gatton shuffled off this great mortal coil in 1994, his music and love of the guitar are captured on this Hot Licks Video release. Gatton’s legacy lives on as he hangs out in front of the camera, leisurely explaining the finer points of playing rhythm guitar. A well-respected player and session man, Gatton aptly handles the difficulty of teaching rhythm, a form of guitar-playing that most devotees avoid. After watching Gatton and his slick moves, many people wishing to be Hendrix just may drop the ego and be satisfied with playing in sync with the drums and bass. ~ Ed Atkinson, Rovi |

Emotive $8.78 Maynard James Keenan is known for venting his personal angst through the abstract metal of his former band Tool and the poisoned art rock of his current outfit A Perfect Circle. To support his case he delivers a handful of politically charged… |

…Tick…Tick…Tick $15.98 Songwriter Steve Wynn, the former Dream Syndicate frontman, has been on a tear since 1996 when he offered Melting in the Dark. Since then, his records have featured howling, wailing rock & roll and deep, dark acoustic reflections — all of them bearing his trademark noir-ish lyrics that offer the shadowy side of life, love, and violence. He’s employed a variety of musicians, and they’ve always sounded like hired guns. On …Tick…Tick…Tick he’s got himself a real band. They’re all younger than he is, and they have the hunger it takes to really execute Wynn’s unique songs. Start with drummer Linda Pitmon, who acts as co-producer (along with Wynn and Craig Schumacher) on these sides. Add to this the fact that the entire band (including Dave DeCastro on bass and guitarist Jason Victor) plots the arrangements. Wynn’s willful loss of total control has benefited him in spades. The set jumps out of the gate howling with “Wired,” where it sounds as if Wynn is singing through a megaphone. It’s followed by the creepy rocker “Cindy, It Was Always You,” co-written with ? ber hard-boiled crime fiction novelist George Pelecanos. On “Killing Me,” Wynn employs Bo Diddley’s “Who Do You Love?” guitar riff and mutates it into something utterly unhinged. The shuffle gets moved into overdrive as Victor makes his guitar scream, roar, and squeal while Wynn holds down the rhythm and overdubs a distorted slide. It’s followed by a seemingly simple ballad entitled “The Deep End,” which rises in drama to the breaking point about two thirds of the way through. It’s full of a kind of emptiness and questioning about the experience of loss; it expresses fear at the ensuing emptiness and the apprehension of being in this space. DeCastro’s bass enters about a minute in, and propels the guitars as Pitmon accents every line as if it were the gospel truth — and for the singer, it is. The swirling beauty that rises in the middle of the track transforms the protagonist’s voice, as if by … |

Biscuits for Breakfast $12.98 One has to give the NinjaTune label credit for taking a chance on Biscuits for Breakfast. When we last listened in on Finian Greenhall (aka Fink), he was making ambient trip-hop beats (2000s Fresh Produce), and a long six years later he’s become a full-blown, guitar picking singer/songwriter. No, we’re not speaking of the whiskey-rotted, cowboy-hatted, delusional Americana of a Townes Van Zandt wannabe, nor the wasted Cocaine California decadence of the Jackson Browne-Eagles brood, nor the weepy, terminally depressed Nick Drake-wish-upon-a-Pink Moon-songstrelsy either. Instead, Fink’s gone his own way. That’s not to say the sounds of his heroes aren’t in here: one can hear John Martyn in his noirish approach to jazzy acoustic blues, the bottleneck influence of Peter Green (post-Fleetwood Mac y’all) and even the fingerpicking toughness of Davy Graham. There is a wonderfully intimate smokiness in Fink’s approach to his songs. It’s intimate, but utterly lacking in sentimentalism,. Check the opener “Pretty Little Thing,” on which he plays the whole menagerie: bass, guitar (nylon strings, no less), and B-3. The lyrics in this cut are not much to be sure, but as a first track Fink’s looking to usher in the set’s atmosphere, and as such it works beautifully. Dave Matthews would kill to have written a tune like this one for his “solo” album Some Devil. The real surprise is when his co-writers — bassist Guy Whittaker and drummer Tim Thornton — and bandmates jump in on “Pills in My Pocket.” The steel-string acoustic comes out, as does the bottleneck slide, a shuffling rhythm ushers in his streetlife tale matter-of-factly. Vocalist Tina Grace (Nitin Sawhney, Cirque du Soleil) sings lead on the swampy, spooky love song “Hush Now,” as Fink plays slide, and sings backup and creates a series of shuffling little loops that enter the picture. The title track has a few sparse FX on it, but the tone is a moaning little streetwise blues and the main instrument is his voice… |

Dirty Pool $16.98 Fans of Stevie Ray Vaughan will notice the title of this disc is that of a Vaughan song. Indeed, three selections from his songbook are covered here: “Too Sorry,” “Telephone Song,” and the title track. The impressive Melvin Taylor is an electric blues guitarist who will appeal to the fans of the legendary Texan for his skilled and precise playing along with his smooth and expressive vocals. Taylor definitely continues the Chicago blues tradition that begot Luther Allison, Buddy Guy, and Otis Rush. Taylor gives his version of Rush’s “Right Place, Wrong Time” on this collection of nine covers. His lineup here is a trio — a reliable bass and drum rhythm section keeps up a steady bottom end, showcasing his ability to handle all vocals and guitar parts. Every track here is rife in the easy genius that marks a true master of the blues craft. ~ Tom Schulte, Rovi |

False Start $13.98 Arthur Lee (rhythm guitar/lead vocals/piano) chose to keep the Love moniker alive after disintegrating the band’s original incarnation. By the close of the 1960s, Lee was joined by a new lineup featuring a rhythm section of Frank Fayad (bass) and George Suranovich (drums), with Jay Donnellan (lead guitar) and then Gary Rowles (lead guitar) holding court as the band’s primary stringman with the latter present on False Start (1970). While the Lee-supplied material isn’t his most memorable, one positive factor is the combo’s consistency and cohesiveness. This can be traced back to Love having just completed a successful European tour and Lee being able to collaborate with his longtime pal Jimi Hendrix, who would not only help Lee write the LP’s jammed-out opener “The Everlasting First,” but also even stick around long enough to lend his unmistakable southpaw to the recording. The track starts abruptly — as if someone inadvertently jostled a power cord loose — joining the action in-progress. Ostensibly, Hendrix’s instrumental interaction is the impetus behind the number, but it is Lee’s sorely underappreciated lyrical abilities that turn it into a bluesy love ballad. The catchy “Flying” typifies the early-’70s boogie that Jo Jo Gunne was able cash in on. Otherwise, it is pretty much fluff. Considerably more interesting is the heavier poppy (think the Raspberries) sound of “Gimi a Little Break” with engaging chord progressions that conjure up Lee’s work on “August” from their previous outing Four Sail (1969). The concert extract “Stand Out” — a prime example of Love’s aforementioned on-stage unity — does just that as the spirited side was derived from the then-recent round of live dates that preceded False Start’s creation. It’s packed with a compact, hard-edged energy that could be mistaken for Grand Funk or even a mellowed-out MC5. Proving his uncanny ability to jump from genre to genre, Lee heads down-home for the countrified “Keep on Shining” with … |

Imagine $17.98 Following on from the success of his sophomore set Shivers, DJ/remixer/producer Armin Van Buuren returned with 2008′s Imagine. More musically adventurous than its predecessor, the Dutch club hero continues to push the boundaries of trance to their limits on the set-opening title track. “Imagine” begins in, of all places, pomp rock, then storms into the clubs on battering beats and pulsing bass, but even after it settles into its groove, the majestic melody and synthetic guitar licks keep the excitement level at fever pitch. “Going Wrong” is just as inspired, New Romantic and new wave-edged but doused in house, with vocalist Chris Jones adding to the classic status of this obvious crowd pleaser. “Hold on to Me”‘s melody line initially soars like U2, but then the piece breaks towards synth-pop while Audrey Gallagher bounces overhead. It’s a stirring mix of wave, pop, and trance. “In and Out of Love” beautifully blends an angular post-punk rhythm with a New Romantic atmosphere, the latter emphasized by Sharon den Adel’s soaring vocals and creating a glimmering, entrancing piece. Ethereal vocals float over the coursing “Face to Face,” a number as beholden to its New Romantic mood as it is to its pounding beats; eventually, though, the number slides into house and even pushes towards techno. “Unforgivable,” too, has a house-y tinge and a wonderfully squelchy bassline, the percussion adding a dollop of industrial to the sound, with Jaren’s warm, sultry vocals adding heat to the number’s fire. “Never Say Never” adds elements of old-school house to the mix, as does “What If,” which also boasts a quite intricately arranged rhythm. “Fine Without You” increases the tempo and the tension, while “Rain” storms straight into trance. The set closing “Intricacy” is a roller coaster ride, skirting around gabba territory before shooting down into house and back up into trance, the insistent four on the floor beats driving the number to its ecstatic conclusion… |

J. Geils Band concert at Oakland Coliseum Arena on 22 Mar 80 $9.98 This performance by blues-rock outfit J. Geils Band was captured on March 22, 1980 at the legendary Oakland Coliseum for the King Biscuit Flower Hour. The concert finds the band on the cusp of its greatest success. The group is touring behind its 1980 release Love Stinks, an album that climbed all the way to No. 18 on Billboard’s Pop Albums chart. The group is at its kinetic best, as evidenced by their opener “Jus’ Can’t Stop Me,” the last track from their tenth album, 1978′s Sanctuary. From there, they keep the energy up with storming versions of “Night Time,” “Just Can’t Wait,” and “Come Back”???all key tracks from Love Stinks. John “J.” Geils’ guitar work is up to his high standard, with his bluesy licks peppering the songs and really bringing them to life. Lead vocalist, the aptly named Peter Wolf, is full of personality and spirit, and he consistently engages the crowd with his quirky banter and passionate vocals. The rhythm section, comprised of drummer Stephen Jo Bladd and bassist Danny Klein, serve as the group’s powerful engine room, providing a solid template for Geils, Wolf, keyboard player Seth Justman, and multi-instrumentalist Magic Dick (trumpet, saxophone, harmonica) to play off. The group sets a party mood, and the audience really responds. This recording makes it clear why J. Geils Band remained a popular touring band for almost 20 years and is still remembered fondly by music fans who know them for more than a certain 1980′s radio smash. Though J. Geils band was best known for their 80s-pop hit “Centerfold,” they formed 15 years before the release of said song. In the mid ’60s, Worcester, Massachusetts blues guitarist John Geils formed a blues group called Snoopy and the Sopwith Camels with Danny Klein on bass and Richard “Magic Dick” Salwitz on harmonica. In 1967, the group recruited Peter Wolf to sing and Stephen Jo Bladd on drums, under the moniker the J. Geils Blues Band. By 1970, the group had signed with Atlantic Records, picked up Seth |

Paralyzed $15.98 Paralyzed is an ironic title for an album that’s anything but sedentary and inert. Although the dirgey Sabbath grind of Witch’s debut release is retained here, there’s also a newfound amphetamine rush to this material, the band drawing more explicitly on some of its punk and hardcore roots. Speed is of the essence and, in contrast with the first album, just one track lasts for over five minutes. Short and sharp, “1000 MPH” and “Mutated” suggest a band gripped by white-line fever: furious riffing sets the pace, but the rhythm section’s relentless, stripped-down drive is the engine of Witch’s attack, with drummer J Mascis playing Philthy Animal Taylor to bassist Dave Sweetapple’s Lemmy. Indeed, Paralyzed mates metallic heft with punk’s economy and tempo in a coupling that evokes the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Nowhere is this louder and clearer than on the opener, “Eye,” its pummeling charge and twin guitar lines channeling Diamond Head and Iron Maiden. Despite the revved-up assault, on several more expansive numbers Witch reprises its trademark sludgy trippiness. “Old Trap Line” emphasizes the band’s spacier tendencies, its fuzzed-out Om-like bass anchoring a spiraling, mesmeric groove; elsewhere, the trudging “Sweet Sue” makes room for some of the melody squeezed out of the compressed, riffcentric tracks. However, the most memorable numbers bring together the two competing sides of Witch’s sonic character: “Gone,” for instance, oscillates between zoned-out torpor and surging intensity, while the bad trip of “Psychotic Rock” moves from a “Vegetable Man”-style disoriented plod to a frenzied climax. Witch might be something of a side project for its members, yet it bears none of the signs of ironic hipster-dabbling that often mark such ventures: not only does Paralyzed attest to absolute fluency in the metal idiom, it shows a band prepared to experiment with and expand it. ~ Wilson Neate, Rovi |

USED: Johnny Cash Remixed $5.98 Johnny Cash earned his legendary status with his music and his life. In a career that stretches from the dawn of commercial country and pop music to the dawn of the 21st century, he made his rep as an artist of uncommon integrity. Too bad the same can’t be said for his record labels. Even before he passed, his music was subjected to a massive repackaging and reissue program, and Johnny Cash Remixed continues the trend, with the expected unfortunate results. Who knows what Cash thought about hip-hop, but it’s hard to believe he would have enjoyed this bastardization of his work. The collection was produced by John Carter Cash and Snoop Dogg, and while it has its amusing moments, the original Sun Recordings Cash made in the 50s will still sound timeless long after the junk on this album has faded from memory. “I Walk the Line” gets smothered by Snoop Dogg’s big, bass heavy production; “Get Rhythm” is transformed into an electro-funk track with the original track broken into snippets and sprinkled onto the pounding backbeats; “Doin’ My Time” sounds like a soul band cover with Cash making a brief “appearance” near the end of the track; Alabama 3, the guys who recorded the song that became the theme for The Sopranos use a snippet of “Leave That Junk Alone” but reinvent the track as their own. Machine Drum’s “Belshazzar” remix leeches all the drama out of the song, and Apparat’s take on “I Heard That Lonesome Whistle Blow” also tries to make a desolate song more desolate by adding industrial sound effects, but the effort is wasted. On the positive tip, as the kids would say, there’s Count de Money’s remix of “Big River,” which adds a few dub effects and an electric guitar solo that isn’t bad, but is unnecessary. Sonny J’s “Country Boy” breaks up Cash’s solo and makes it sound like a rap, complemented by gospel-esque female vocals, while on “Folsom Prison Blues,” Pete Rock adds slide guitar (probably from Carter Cash) and a thumping club beat, but th… |

USED: Rockabilly Riot, Vol. 1: A Tribute to Sun Records $7.99 The concept is stated in the title and the execution is about what you’d expect from one of the most popular rockabilly revivalists in contemporary music. It’s not much of a stretch for Stray Cat Brian Setzer to take a break from writing his own rockabilly tunes that often sound like classic Sun material anyway, but by narrowing his focus roughly from 1954 to early 1957 and sticking with music produced by the king of country music record labels, he scores credibility points. The 23-track set is peppered with obvious choices like Carl Perkins’ “Blue Suede Shoes” and “Boppin’ the Blues” and Johnny Cash’s “Get Rhythm,” but dominated by more obscure fare from lesser-known acts such as Kenny Parchman, Ernie Barton, and Tommy Blake. Setzer even tracked down Jumpin’ Gene Simmons to finish off “Peroxide Blonde in a Hopped Up Model Ford” when part of the original master copy was found to have been erased. Elvis is represented only by “Just Because,” a brief nod to the King that also illustrates how many other acts had produced music nearly as vital from the same little room in Memphis. Setzer even calls in the Jordanaires to provide background vocals, bringing even more authenticity to this project. These versions are refreshingly stripped down, with standup bass, skeletal drums, acoustic piano, and occasional sax providing all the instrumental excitement. Even Setzer’s fiery guitar solos are lean, mean, and never dominate the songs. He’s in terrific form throughout; clearly his heart is in it and it sounds like he’s having a blast. Whether listeners need covers that stick so closely to the originals, if with slightly fuller sound, when the real McCoys are easily available is something listeners will have to decide for themselves. Regardless, this is a rollicking, ballad-free, nonstop hour of classic rockabilly that shows how much great music emerged from such a short period, and from only one record label. Setzer fans will be thrilled and those first hearing th… |
