Something I Said / chastity Brown Rocks Cedar Cultural Center
Something I Said / chastity Brown By Dwight Hobbes, TC Daily Planet July 22, 2010
Chastity Brown is living somethin 'else and a half. He played June 12 in a packed Cedar Cultural Center and, from the first song to last, it is one hellified range of about a dozen songs that, judging by the reaction of everyone in attendance, then got way too quickly.
On top of being a great singer and songsmith, Brown gets his heart performance, pouring everything he's got. And he's got a lot. Talent, passion, grit and, just in general, engaging presence. On ballads his voice is achingly poignant. He throws himself into up-tempo numbers with real fire, hunched over the guitar, working life from head to toe. All singular fashion in casual, complete command. It is the raw-edged blues timbre of an old-time gospel shouter, generally is softened in a reflective and mournful wailing. Except when he rears back and get stronger. Then, all bets are off and break out his bag Brown to fall with such sheer, simple power as is, at times, to raise goose bumps. Brown virtue, as they say, one of a kind, a painter self power and style.

The set list of his latest album High Noon teeth, all in the same order the CD. And he never hit a wrong note. The highlight is a killer "From My Old." For one, he rested his guitar and tickled pure hell out of the piano for some very old time rock and soul, raising a head of steam gutbucket, belting out a beautiful turn somewhat reminiscent of Anita Pointer (a, Yes, the Pointer Sisters). Its advocates are guitarist Robert Mulrennan (No Bird Sing) sitting in his regular band of Michael X. (Drums, percussion), Adam Wozniak (bass) and Nikki Schultz (vocals). They all are fine, with Schultz rendering an uncanny echo of Brown's phrasing and general approach. Some times two traded off, sharing voice leads, and it is quite magical.
Right before chastity Brown, an interesting trio of Alexei Moon Casselle (guitar, harmonica) Ryan Lovan (drums) and Channy Moon Casselle (vocals, violin) band from Rome in Luna delivered sweet emotive ballads, including a splendidly original take on The Beatles '"I" that you just never saw coming. No Bird Sing opened serviceable, volatile Alt-rock on guitar, piano, and behind drums not natural reward scheme palmed off as poetic.
Any time you have the opportunity to catch chastity Brown concert or a club, you owe it to yourself to enjoy this premier artist who really should be experienced to believed.

Hofner H500/1-CT Contemporary Series Violin Bass Guitar Black 886830146695 $703.99 A year after celebrating the 50th anniversary of Walter Hofner’s original violin bass, made famous by a certain Beatle who shall remain nameless, they have decided to produce a contemporary version. It has a vintage look that will produce many “oohs”, and an internal sustain block that creates a more modern, deep-resonating sound that will produce many “aahs.” It’s the kind of bass guitar people love to see, play, and hear.Aesthetically, this model features a maple-beech-maple set neck with rosewood fretboard accentuated by mother-of-pearl dot inlays, the signature Hofner violin bass headstock, a brass trapeze tailpiece, and glossy spruce top with glossy flamed maple back and sides. An ebony bridge with movable metal saddles maintains intonation and string spacing. The nickel-plated hardware and floating celluloid pearl pickguard give it an extra little pop for the eyes.On the electronics side, you’re working with two original Hofner 511B ‘Staple’ humbucking pickups, as well as a control panel with 2 volume controls, 2 on/off switches, and a rhythm/solo switch for volume boost. The overall sound is warm like the original model, but with a little more sonic kick for a more “now” sound. |

Stuart Sutcliffe: The Lost Beatle – Dolby $14.99 The remarkable life of the man who played bass for one of the biggest bands in rock & roll history comes to the screen in a fascinating documentary produced to tell the tale of original Beatles bassist Stuart Sutcliffe. It was in 1959 that the Liverpool art college student first made the acquaintance of like-minded artist and musician John Lennon. Fast friends from the very start, the pair began making music together when Lennon convinced Sutcliffe to use the proceeds of a painting he had recently sold to purchase a bass guitar and begin playing with fellow musicians Paul McCartney and George Harrison. Soon joined by drummer Pete Best, the ambitious band would subsequently land a contract playing their unique brand of music at some of the seediest clubs in Hamburg. With success on the horizon and the future looking bright, however, Sutcliffe would soon stun his fellow musicians by leaving the band to focus on his art and spend more time with his fianc?e, German photographer Astrid Kirchherr. His health subsequently taking a turn for the worse, Sutcliffe fell into a seizure-induced coma in early April 1962 and later died of a cerebral hemorrhage at the tender age of 21 — just one year before the Beatles blasted to the top of the charts with their groundbreaking release Please Please Me. Now Beatles fans can finally find out the true story of the man known as the “Lost Beatle” in this documentary featuring interviews with those who knew Sutcliffe best, including former fianc?e Kirchherr, early Beatles manager Allan Williams, Rod Murray, American art historian Donald Kuspit, and Sutcliffe’s sister and onetime roommate Pauline. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi |
