About Face $9.99 David Gilmour released his second solo venture in 1984, following the apparent dissolution of Pink Floyd. He had released a record on his own in 1978, but About Face is much more accessible. Gilmour has a stellar band backing him, including Jeff Porcaro (drums), Pino Palladino (bass), and Anne Dudley (synthesizer). The songs on About Face show a pop sensibility that Pink Floyd rarely was concerned with achieving. Although the album didn’t attract the attention of a Floyd release, several cuts did manage to get airplay. “Until We Sleep” is rife with shimmering synthesizers and cavernous drums, and “Blue Light” was a minor pop hit, with Gilmour’s trademark delay-drenched guitar giving way to a driving, horn-laced rocker. Pete Townshend wrote two of the tracks: “Love on the Air” and the propulsive “All Lovers Are Deranged.” Of course, there’s more than enough of Gilmour’s fluid guitar playing to satisfy, including the gorgeous “Murder,” a gentle acoustic track that explodes with some fiery organ by Steve Winwood and concludes with a fierce coda. C’est Com…Com…Compliqu? $19.98 As strange and chaotic as the journey of Germany’s Faust has been since 1970, one thing has been constant: no matter what they have issued, in whatever incarnation, Faust have never sounded like anyone else. They have been a myth since the very beginning, and a mystery to all but one another. C’est Com…Com…Compliqu? , issued in early 2009, was recorded by the studio incarnation of Faust: original members Jean Herv? Peron and Werner “Zappi” Diermaier along with Amaury Cambuzat of French vanguard rock outfit Ulan Bator. (There is also an expanded live version of the band with former Henry Cow reed and woodwind man Geoff Leigh, singer Lucianne Lassalle, British poet Zo? Skoulding, and members of Welsh experimentalist band Ectogram.) The album was recorded at the now legendary Electric Avenue Studio in Hamburg by Tobias Levin. The music on this set is much less anarchic than some previous Faust releases, but that doesn’t make it any less enjoyable or adventurous. Rhythmically, Dermaier’s drumming is as trancelike as ever, whether he’s using his kit or various other percussion instruments (or those adopted as such); Peron’s basslines are throbbing, pulsing and incantatory; and Cambuzat’s wildly original use of guitars, various primitive keyboards, toy instruments, and household elements fills out a sound that is more speculative than aggressive, though there is no lack of drama in these proceedings. A listen to the nine-plus-minute mantra-like “Kundalini Tremolos,” which is Krautrock to its very core, is example enough. But there are much stranger things on offer here as well, such as “Petits Sons App? tissants,” with its strummed nylon-string guitars; lunatic-fringe French poetry; Wurlitzer piano; bass drums; tom-toms; and crashing, thunder-like sheets of metal percussion. The guitar and bass freakout that introduces “Bonjour Gioacchino” is the most “rockist” thing here; its sense of power and overdrive with shimmering reverb and clattering cymbals an…

Circle in the Round $23.98 Although this two-disc set is a compilation — primarily consisting of extended outtakes — Circle in the Round features the true colors of jazz chameleon Miles Davis (trumpet) during a 15-year (1955-1970) span from eight different recording sessions. Whether it was serendipity or astute coordination that gathered these sides together, Davis enthusiasts will undoubtedly find plenty to enjoy from his prolific and seemingly perpetual metamorphosis. The sessions are presented chronologically for the most part, beginning with a composite of “Two Bass Hit.” This version is from an October 1955 Kind of Blue session featuring John Coltrane (tenor sax) and a band Davis refers to as “the trio”: Red Garland (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Philly Joe Jones (drums). From the May 1958 recording date comes another major session featuring an all-star lineup: Julian “Cannonball” Adderley (alto sax), Coltrane (tenor sax), Bill Evans (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Jimmy Cobb (drums). Their single take on Cole Porter’s “Love for Sale” is an amazing performance that allows for some intensely cool solos from Miles and Adderley in particular. Listen as well for some tasty piano fills from Evans, as this is the sort of interaction that he’d become synonymous with. Although “Blues No. 2″ is taken from the final session at which Davis and Coltrane would record together, studio documentation reveals that Coltrane did not perform on this piece. The title track appears in an unedited form on the Miles Davis Quintet, 1965-68: The Complete Columbia Studio box set. It is a heavily Eastern-influenced freebop work featuring Davis — who is also credited with performing on chimes during this session — with his famous late-’60s quintet, featuring Wayne Shorter (tenor sax), Herbie Hancock (celeste), Ron Carter (bass), and Tony Williams (drums), as well as Joe Beck (guitar). Godspeed on the Devil’s Thunder [2CD] $24.98 If ever there were a subject for England’s Cradle of Filth to tackle, it’s the life of notorious French mass murderer (and celebrated war hero companion of Joan of Arc) Gilles de Rais. If you haven’t heard of him, don’t be surprised. After he was hanged in 1440, his name was stricken from the official records of history by French authorities. His crimes? Too numerous too mention here, but the worst of them involved the murder and rape of hundreds of children. Late in his life, French national library boss, critic, and novelist Georges Bataille wrote a complete book on the trial of this figure. De Rais was Sadeian before the Marquis de Sade ever existed (indeed, he may have been an inspiration for some of the characters in The 120 Days of Sodom). This album is a lengthy examination of the mind and biography of de Rais — nobleman, aristocrat, devout Christian, war hero, and societal icon by day, by night an insane Satan-worshipping gore hound and purveyor of slaughter and blood sacrifice. On the surface it seems that Godspeed on the Devil’s Thunder might be an ideal topic for a death metal record by the outrageously theatrical Cradle of Filth, led by head growler and screecher Dani Filth. It begins well with the classical interlude “In Grandeur and Frankincense Devilment Stirs,” with the spoken word poem of the character. On the next track, “Shat Out of Hell,” the listener is engaged by the utterly frenetic power drumming and ? ber fast death metal guitar and bass riffery behind the simultaneously Cookie Monster growled and shrieked vocals of Filth. This may the only track on the record that offers a rather negative view of his crimes, and is the most musically compelling thing here. Beginning with the very next cut, the nascent “The Death of Love,” near prog rock conceptual theater takes precedence over rock & roll fury. Keyboards and choirs, Gothic-sounding themes, minor-key riffs, and thunderous drums give way to a heavily layered production style, althou…

USED: BELOW THE WAVES $4.99 After the generally good vibes of Firefly, the starker performances on Below the Waves must have come as a surprise to many of Heidi Berry’s fans. Without changing her excellent singing in the slightest, Berry and her arranger, Christian Lunch, replaced the light folk-rock of Firefly with a more ambient and, often times, quite haunting backing. Brother Christopher Berry’s fine acoustic guitar work stays at the center — but stripped of the band, both it and her vocals stand out with a gorgeous clarity, accentuated by a soft layer of reverb applied throughout the disc. Her lyrics are much clearer as well; her calm detailing of “blood on your hands” in “Little Tragedy” could easily have been lost in the mix had the song been performed on Firefly. Not everything is sonically downbeat — sprightly guitar helps add a slight musical jauntiness to “Riversong” — but generally, though, Below emphasizes ruminative lyrics and calm music. The title track is especially fascinating, with a low rumble of sound beginning and ending the song on a slightly disturbing note. Violin and cello appear on a number of songs, deepening the melancholy and sorrowful undertow of many of them. By no means, however, is the record a specifically sad one. If anything, Berry seeks to bring out a careful reflection through her music, as on the lengthy, powerful “Northshore Train,” with such slice-of-life observations as “the electric towers stand in line on water’s edge.” A number of tracks favor keyboards or pianos instead of guitar, often to grand effect: The slow combination of organ swells and bass notes on “Gather All the Hours” creates a lovely bed for Berry’s singing. USED: Live from Austin TX [DVD] $10.99 Following the release of her third album Blacklisted, Neko Case’s reputation was beginning to expand beyond the boundaries of the alt-country community when she appeared on the celebrated roots music television showcase Austin City Limits, and Live from Austin, TX preserves the full 14-song set Case played for ACL’s studio audience on August 9, 2003. Case’s accompaniment is simple and spare on this set — Jon Rauhouse on guitar, banjo and pedal steel, Tom V. Ray on bass and Kelly Hogan on vocal harmonies — but Case’s warm, rich voice is big enough to fill the room all by itself, and her partners provide just the right accents for the sad but resonant songs that dominate this performance. Perhaps Case’s greatest virtue is her ability to sing with strength and authority without sounding histrionic, and that gift dominates this album; listen to her take on “Deep Red Bells” and you’ll notice that while she gives a passionate performance that’s deeply emotional and physically expressive, she has an intuitive sense of when to go full out and when to ease back, and the dynamics of the number are gorgeous, especially with just Rauhouse’s banjo and Ray’s bass filling out the arrangement. Live from Austin, TX is less ambitious than Case’s 2004 live effort The Tigers Have Spoken, in terms of both accompaniment and material, but there’s a simplicity and cohesion to this set that’s beautiful and satisfying, and anyone who has been impressed with the artistry of her studio work (especially 2006′s brilliant Fox Confessor Brings the Flood) will want to hear this concert in which her voice is given free reign. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
