Question for those who play the Cello?
I would like to learn to play the cello. I have a lot of background in music. For instance, I am advanced on the piano (I’ve played for almost 20 yrs. now.) And about 10 years ago I played violin and the clarinet for about 3 years. (I’ve forgotten a lot of that.) But I have always LOVED the sound of the cello and would love to learn. My question is how hard/easy would it be for me to teach myself the cello? Or at least the basics. I WOULD just take lessons from someone but I’m a college student and can’t really afford to pay for lessons until I graduate at the end of the year. So until then, I’d like to just get myself to a fairly good beginning level. Just wondering if you all who play cello think this would be feasible or not…and if so what would be some good books to start with? And where might I be able to buy / rent a cello for a good price?
How do I start out?
Here’s the thing: the initial instruction of technique is VERY important. Bad habits are hard to break. You could pay another student to teach you and that would be very cheap. Maybe take a lesson every two weeks. But teaching yourself technique isn’t a good idea. If you can wait for a teacher I would. But in the meantime you might want to watch cello videos on youtube or perhaps purchase Tortelier or Casals teaching DVDs. Listen to cello music. Familiarize yourself with its sound. I wouldn’t rely on your violin technique to guide you. While they’re both strings and the basics of sound production apply, its still very different simply because of the direction in which the instrument is held. Even the bow hold is different because of gravity’s role.
It is feasible to play without a teacher. It’s just not advisable. Trust me. I’m trying to break some bad habits and its HARD. Besides, learning incorrectly could cause injury!
Good luck. Feel free to message me with questions.

Don’t Play With Matches $15.98 Apparently the secret’s out — before singer Rob Thomas, bassist Brian Yale, and drummer Paul Doucette formed the megapopular Matchbox 20, they were part of another solid modern pop/rock band that sounds not so mysteriously familiar, even without the slick production expertise of Matt Serletic. As we ponder whether the title of this release prompted the name of the new band, we can hear an outstanding batch of songs which capture the same power pop energy and, of course, that identifiable Thomas voice, which is on the more restrained side here. “And Around” is a raw, bluesy rocker, while “Forever December” begins with a folksy acoustic guitar and vocal before rolling along in snappy fashion. That same pattern — gentle beginning before the guitar crunching comes in — repeats on the anthemic, bittersweet “Here Comes Horses.” Matchbox 20 is not known for creating lush, lyrical ballads, but the reflective, apologetic “Dear Joan” (a folksy tune featuring a mournful cello) displays a sweet side that would balance the tougher energy of most of Matchbox 20′s material. “Tired” goes the opposite extreme, jamming and explosive throughout, while “Swing” mixes subtle passages with crunchy guitar inflections. It is sort of the transitional piece between both bands. “Paint Me Blue” predicts the mid-tempo hooky pop/rock the band would become famous for. As if their fans didn’t have enough reason to buy this disc, it also features a spirited acoustic rendition of “3 A.M.” Well worth the look back. ~ Jonathan Widran, Rovi |

USED: BELOW THE WAVES $4.99 After the generally good vibes of Firefly, the starker performances on Below the Waves must have come as a surprise to many of Heidi Berry’s fans. Without changing her excellent singing in the slightest, Berry and her arranger, Christian Lunch, replaced the light folk-rock of Firefly with a more ambient and, often times, quite haunting backing. Brother Christopher Berry’s fine acoustic guitar work stays at the center — but stripped of the band, both it and her vocals stand out with a gorgeous clarity, accentuated by a soft layer of reverb applied throughout the disc. Her lyrics are much clearer as well; her calm detailing of “blood on your hands” in “Little Tragedy” could easily have been lost in the mix had the song been performed on Firefly. Not everything is sonically downbeat — sprightly guitar helps add a slight musical jauntiness to “Riversong” — but generally, though, Below emphasizes ruminative lyrics and calm music. The title track is especially fascinating, with a low rumble of sound beginning and ending the song on a slightly disturbing note. Violin and cello appear on a number of songs, deepening the melancholy and sorrowful undertow of many of them. By no means, however, is the record a specifically sad one. If anything, Berry seeks to bring out a careful reflection through her music, as on the lengthy, powerful “Northshore Train,” with such slice-of-life observations as “the electric towers stand in line on water’s edge.” A number of tracks favor keyboards or pianos instead of guitar, often to grand effect: The slow combination of organ swells and bass notes on “Gather All the Hours” creates a lovely bed for Berry’s singing. Ending with the elegant “Dancer,” Below is an underrated treasure. ~ Ned Raggett, All Music Guide |
