The collection covers his adorably square work from the late ’50s and early ’60s through his more orchestrated and rock-influenced work from the late ’60s and ’70s, with “The Way You Look Tonight” defining the former and “You Light Up My Life” defining the latter. Though Conniff’s heyday came relatively early in his career — with songs like this collection’s “I’m in the Mood for Love,” “Memories are Made of This,” and “It Had to Be You” representing that era — the remainder of his work is as interesting, if not as successful, as what preceded it. The theatrical bent of his late-’60s-early-’70s material fits songs such as The Godfather’s “Speak Softly Love,” and Love Story’s “Where Do I Begin,” while his other work from that time experiments with exotic and foreign touches, as on “This is My Song,” and Serge Gainsbourg’s “Je T’Aime…Moi Non Plus (Love at First Sight).” Interestingly enough, the collection also reflects how pop music shifted away from a collection of standard songs with many possible interpretations to singer/songwriter-based music that, when covered, usually stayed close to the original version; the fat bass and electric pianos on the cover of Billy Joel’s “Just the Way You Are” nod to the original. While Love Songs doesn’t contain enough of Conniff’s essential music to make the collection work as a straightforward hits collection, it certainly captures the slightly dreamy, slightly playful feel that defined all of his material. Even if the lounge revival is no longer hip, Conniff’s music is so well-produced and arranged that it still makes fun, surprisingly fresh-sounding mood music. ~ Heather Phares

Cortical Songs $15.99 Full performer name: Cortical Songs/John Matthias/Nick Ryan.The fourth release from the U.K.’s Nonclassical label features Cortical Songs, a collaboration by John Matthias and Nick Ryan in four brief movements scored for solo violin and string orchestra. Although their parts are fully written out, the timing of the players’ entrances is triggered by a computer program modeled on patterns of neuronal spiking in the human brain, so that no two performances are the same. Matthias is the violin soloist and Ryan controls the live interactive programming. The results — shifting atmospheric sound masses — are texturally fascinating, particularly in the third and fourth movements. The movements seem too brief, though; this slowly evolving material needs a longer span, a broader canvass on which to unfold, and would be even more persuasive if given more space. As is the case with most of Nonclassical’s releases, the album includes remixes of material from the main piece, provided here on 11 tracks by 12 musicians, some with primarily classical backgrounds and some from more experimental rock traditions, although, as with most of Nonclassical’s artists, that distinction is pretty blurry. The remixes offer a gratifying range of responses to original material, from the static minimalism of “Neuron Trigger” by Radiohead’s Thom Yorke to the giddily erratic groove of Gabriel Prokofiev’s “Brain Bumper.” In some, like Marcus Lancaster’s “2nd Movement” remix, the material is so thoroughly processed that it’s hard to recognize the source. Dominic Murcott’s background as a percussionist comes across in “The Bipolar Shuffle,” one of the most inventive and sophisticated tracks. Another standout is Marcus Coates’ lovely and spooky “0.2 – 20.000%,” which uses layers of the solo violin line essentially unaltered, underlaid with a mysterious new accompaniment that develops into an ominous cloud that eventually engulfs it. This is another impressive track that could be made even more powerful if the material were given more time to expand and breathe. Cortical Songs and the remixes should be of strong interest to listeners intrigued by the intersection between new music and experimental rock. ~ Stephen Eddins

Though the Nenets have no history or traditon of acting, this is a beautifully-shot anthology fiction film. The first segment, entitled “Sacrifice,” shows a wintery religious ritual involving the sacrifice of a reindeer. “The Bride” depicts traditional, pre-Revolutionary ways, including living in fur-lined teepees and herding reindeer. The story concerns a young woman’s struggle between the man she loves and the rich widower that her mother has chosen her to marry. The following four segments concern changes in the Nenet community after the Soviets take over and demand that they accept the teachings of Lenin and conform to the party line. He sounds energized by the spirited backup vocals of his daughters on the rocking “Do it Again,” and he sings like an angel on “Love and Mercy.” The oddly touching “Still I Dream of It,” rendered here in a primitive home recording, contrasts with the otherwise smooth production, reminding the listener of Wilson’s longtime insistence on coloring outside the lines.
