6 Simple Steps To Put Together A Snare Drum

 

Homemade snare drums vary widely in terms of build quality: from the crude to the creative towards the masterfully crafted. Snare drums themselves have numerous varieties, including any drum with materials right below the head which provide the distinguishable snare or distinctive rattle sound. Objects say for example a wheel rim or other traditional pieces like delicate maple woods might make up a drum.

For this project, you would need: the shell for resonance chamber (could either be wood or metal), drum head, hardware (hoop, lugs, strainer, butt plate), router, file, snare wires, screws or bolts.

 

1. Look for top level shell, since the snare drum’s basic size and shape originates from the resonance chamber itself. Aside from using simple circular or cylindrical objects you have at home which measures 10-14 inches across and six to ten inches deep and with uniform thickness, you may also just buy the outer shell from reputable drum-parts wholesaler or retailer.

 

2. Mark the shell for the hoop, butt plate and strainer. These would be the hardware store the drum head and snares set up on top and at the foot of the drum shell. These will probably be held in place by screws or lug nuts, and how evenly spaced these are around the drum would play a bit part within the performance of the drum. A template enables you to help lay out the screws across the shell.

 

3. With utmost care, drill the holes within the hoop of your spaces marked for that hardware. Be careful not to bend or damage the shell.

 

4. Cut where the drum head will touch the shell, referred to as bearing edge. The tone of the drum would be greatly dependant on how this edge is cut. Some drum shops will offer you to slice the bearing edge but, with the right tools, this can be done on your own. You can draw the bearing edge first and cut out a template to help you in cutting. A router enables you to cut, and a file can be used to get a nice, smooth edge. This edge should run at 45 degrees in both directions from roughly 30 % of the shell thickness from the outside.

 

5. Attach the hoop which is the metal ring that holds the top in place and exerts tension, the strainer which holds the snare wires, and the butt plates. Note that the strainer has a control switch for disengaging the snares as necessary.

 

6. Finally, fasten the head and snare wires. After each one of these, firmly append the drum head which can be fed into the hoop and the snares, which come in 12- or 20-strand configurations and should match the width of your shell in total.

The Basics – Learn To Play The Drums

Drums are a fun and exciting instrument to learn. The groove and over all feel of a song is often kept together by the drum beats being played. When you first piece together a full beat with the bass drum, snare and high hat you’ll be excited.

I’m going to share with you the basics process of learning the drums. If you’ve just got your first kit or are just starting out this article will get you playing in time on the snare, high hat and kick drum.

1 – Start off with the High Hat

There is a lot happening when you’re playing a beat on the drums. Your right and left hands are doing different things and now so is one of your feet. Before you introduce the kick drum to anything start out first with the high hat. You can start this process with the snare as well but following the pattern I outline is closer to what most songs follow.

Use your right hand and practice keeping an even beat on the high hat. If you have some knowledge of 4/4 time then practice keeping the beat like this: 1,2,3,4. You want the time between each strike of the high hat to be the same.

2 – Time for the Snare Drum

Now that you’re maintaining the common time 4/4 beat on the cymbal high hat let’s add something else, let’s hit the snare on the 4 beat.

So you’re still playing 1, 2, 3, 4 on the high had, but now on the 4 hit the snare with your right hand stick. The first try you may find your right hand mixes up on the high hat. That’s alright since you’re trying to get your brain to do two different things with your opposite hands at the same time. You’ll get it to work it just takes some practice.

3 – Add the Kick

If you’ve got that beat working with the snare and high hat it’s time to add in the bass drum. On the 1 beat now hit the kick drum. Continue to keep your 4/4 time on the high hat and and snare drum beat on the 4.

This will take a bit of practice but you’re now telling your brain to do three different things and it takes some time to get it right.

Who doesn’t just love getting into their car, cranking up the stereo, and screaming their favorite lyrics till their vocal chords bleed. We all do it. Doesn’t matter, if it’s a long or short drive. Even the most mild mannered of us enjoy the simple pleasure of a solo drive with your favorite tunes washing over you in your own car audio disco. In this world of constant and increasing responsibilities, information overload, bad news, and disappointment, we all need a place to escape for just a little bit. Even if I’m really just taking a mundane drive to pick up some groceries, I can be my favorite rock star till I get there. With the car stereo turned up nice and loud, I can sing at the top of my lungs, and don’t actually have to hear my voice. Which of course is a good thing, as my voice isn’t really meant for human consumption. Plus, it would just spoil the whole “suspension of disbelief” thing. Of course, every good song blasting through the car speakers needs a good drummer. And hey I have some experience here. I was a bit of a rock star drummer during my formative years. And obviously, since I am responsible for driving the car while rocking out to the old car audio, I can’t very well fit a drum kit between me and the steering wheel. Heaven forbid I get into an accident with the neighbors cat, and that crazy air bag goes off. Not a pretty picture in my brain. However, most steering wheels will substitute as a drum kit anyway. 10 and 2 o’clock on the steering wheel provide positions for both a ride and crash cymbal. The middle supporting piece makes for a great snare and tom-tom, while 4 thru 8 o’clock are my favorite position for roto-tom runs. And of course, in a pinch, the dashboard is close enough to substitute for a rockin’ cowbell, or any other ancillary percussion instruments your favorite song may require.

Car Guitar Fools

While no good car audio band would be complete without some excellent guitar players, I must profess to having little talent in this area. This may be a time when it becomes necessary to have other passengers. Preferably very young or otherwise uninhibited passengers, as most reasonably minded adults look totally silly playing air guitar on their seat belt. In my mind air guitar makes anyone look like a damn fool, no matter how cool they really are. Seat belt air guitar, is even worse. I however am fortunate enough to have one such young passenger, who has no problem “air guitairing” her seat belt, with the car audio cranking. Her specialty is of course “We Are The Champions”.

Taking It On The Road

And of course now our band is complete. What more do you need? A great car stereo, some thunder shaking speakers, the latest MP3 / CD / iPod plugged in, and obviously little fear of the volume switch. And yea, one more thing. An excuse to go for a drive. Any drive. After all, your screaming fans await your next performance. Don’t forget the milk.

How can I take of one side of my snare drum?

I want to add a pillow in there, it dampens the sound of the drum and it feels alot better to play when I put a small pillow ontop of it.

But unlike undoing the bass drum, the things on my snare drum are like this:

So I cant pull them out because of the ring around both the top and bottom of them, preventing me from pulling them through the hole, once undone.

Is there anyway to undo this drum, and which side is the best to undo? The side with the little chains on it, or the side I hit? Thanks.

Yo !!! You can loosen and remove all the top lugs and the ring will come off completely. Don’t worry about the bottom lugs as they are independent.
I wouldn’t put a pillow. Instead, their are good dampers that go directly on the skin which dampens the sound considerably.
