I think I may want to transfer colleges, but I’m not sure, should I?
I’m a freshman at a catholic college in Iowa. I came to the college expecting to find acceptance by the community even though I’m not Catholic-but that hasn’t happened. The college is also very conservative…and I’m a bleeding heart liberal. I also came to the college intending to major in political science, but had a change of heart and am now a music major and the music department here is tiny. I play cello and there isn’t even an orchestra, so I’m not getting the prep I need for a future career. I absolutely love the music professors here, but I am concerned that I will not be prepared for my career. I have managed to make friends and am starting to feel like I fit in the social aspect, but for my major, I feel I will leave ill-prepared. Would you recommend transferring?
I’m doing music education-I would love to be a professional, but work is so sporadic that you can’t count on anything!
Well, hopefully if you stay you’ll at least add a little political diversity to the campus.
I transferred after my first year of college, because I didn’t know what I wanted to do and I felt a bigger school would have more opportunities. I also disliked the social aspect of the college. I was glad I switched, but it helped that I had some friends at the school I transferred to.
Are you sure you really want a career in music? I work with a guy who’s a principal violist in an orchestra. Even he as a principal can only do it as a side job. He works full time at my workplace every day, too. Maybe you can get a business minor or pick another major and minor in music. You should get that worked out before you decide on the college.
In the end, though, no matter what you study, college is about your experiences, and if you think the Catholic college is limiting you, I’d definitely transfer. You won’t regret it.
