Most likely you'll have to buy it. You can get that kind of music by going to your local music store (if they have it in stock they can order it for you), or on Amazon or similar sites. If this is a classic piece that has become public domain, you'd better luck finding a freebie. Sorry. * If you can not afford to buy music, you can try asking around – maybe one of your friend playing cello is a copy he wants you to borrow. * Or maybe you have access to a piano version of the song. If so, you can play the cello tone on your line. That is most likely to triple clef – usually high in the cello, but want to play in the upper registers, you try it – but you can play it down an octave or two. (If you do not know how to read three times and / or does not learn how to play "down" on your cello, I'm sure someone would help you. They may have written it in bass clef for you. My cello teacher is that for me before.) Arrow $13.98 Claire Muldaur Manchon is the daughter of Geoff Muldaur, a master of American vernacular music, and she is undoubtedly making her father proud, but her music is light years and a continent away from the styles that made her father famous. With her band the Reasons, led by her husband Olivier Manchon, she follows up her sparkling 2007 debut with another winner full of impressive melodies and wistful vocals that weave a shimmering web of melancholy romance. The tunes are enhanced by the inventive arrangements of Olivier’s, charts that echo the best elements of the French chanson tradition without a single false note. Olivier creates delirious clouds of sunshine and shadow, and Claire rides them like a fairy queen, sprinkling clever turns of phrase that always sound fresh and spontaneous despite the obvious craft that went into them. There’s not a single weak song in the collection, and they all sound better with every listen. “Ooh You Hurt Me So” makes lost love seem almost bearable with its lush, ’60s-accented melody, a bouncy electric piano, and Claire’s whistling during the bridge. There are two songs about honeybees — “Our Team Is Grand,” with a cello that hums in the background like a contented hive, and “Mellifera,” with its gorgeous vocal and a buoyant keyboard and woodwind arrangement. Both use images of the natural world to evoke the cyclic quality of love relationships. “You Got Time” and “Perdu a Paris” use clusters of repeated notes that sound like electronic loops. The device allows Claire to show off her ability to demonstrate wrenching emotion with minimal effort. “Perdu a Paris” also makes use of trumpet and French horn, producing a sly musical pun. “You Getting Me” is coyly sexual, the most rocking tune on the album, but it’s the softest rock possible with a great groove and another winning melody. Back Home in Sulphur Springs [Norman & Nancy Blake] $17.98 Norman and Nancy Blake return to their roots on Back Home in Sulphur Springs, recalling Norman Blake’s first album in 1972, Home in Sulphur Springs. Not that the couple ever strayed from their roots, but call it a spiritual homecoming. The main difference is that Norman Blake is joined by Nancy Blake this time, and that this album actually has a song on it that refers to Sulphur Springs. The Blakes’ sound and production is simple and straightforward, the perfect approach for old-timey favorites like “Columbus Stockade Blues” and “More Good Women Gone Wrong.” Between the two of them, the Blakes play guitar, fiddle, mandolin, dobro, and cello, allowing for a great deal of elasticity in arrangements. Norman Blake sings lead while Nancy Blake adds her harmony to the choruses of songs like “The Girl I Left in Sunny Tennessee” and “Happy Little Home in Arkansas.” The joy of Back Home in Sulphur Springs, as with all of the Blakes’ solo and joint projects, is their off-the-cuff, non-pretentious manner. No, they’re not the latest, hot string band who work hard to prove their authenticity. Batten the Hatches [Nettwerk] $11.99 Jenny Owen Youngs looks like she might be another typical, long-haired hippie waif with guitar — then she opens her mouth, and your jaw drops. Youngs’ voice has that delicate, childlike quality that plagues many a folksinging female, but when she digs into a song, the dissonance between her sweet alto and the acidic images she uses to paint her bittersweet portraits of life and love is startling. “Porchrail” opens the album with a backing band that sounds like the Violent Femmes. It’s a simple acoustic rocker, with a swing feel that conveys the nervous energy that floods the body when you see someone you really want and probably can’t have. The jittery beat and Youngs’ pleading vocal create a mood of panting desire held in check by shyness and insecurity. Meanwhile, “Fuck Was I” is a self-flagellating tale about being in thrall to a lover who can never do you any good, and yet the love abides. Her matter-of-fact vocal and the song’s lilting beat make her use of the F word actually sound shocking, something that’s increasingly hard to do in the 21st century. On “P.S.,” Youngs plays the banjo in an arrangement with French horn, cello, bass clarinet, and foot stomps. The result sounds kinda like a Tom Waits song, dripping with irony and full of unexpected musical touches. Every song here uses the same basic formula — dark thoughts set to uplifting music — but it’s a formula that works amazingly well. Youngs has an uncanny insight into the pains and insecurities that plague us all when we’re in that vulnerable, confused position of wanting love and feeling unworthy, or wanting out of a relationship and being unable to cut loose from the obsession that makes the pain hurt so good. Calling Out of Context $15.98 Like Another Thought, released ten years prior, Calling out of Context stitches together an hour’s worth of songs left behind by the late, increasingly known — and therefore unceasingly beloved — Arthur Russell. According to liner notes from Audika’s Steve Knutson, the content here pulls from a finished 1985 album that never made it past the test-pressing phase, along with an unfinished LP that was recorded and toyed with throughout the latter half of the ’80s and the dawn of the ’90s. Despite the multiple sources, the consistency of the tracks — which all carry a hazy, memories-of-events-that-never-happened feel — and the sympathetic sequencing make the disc seem more like a proper album than a vault-clearing compilation. If you’re familiar with the sound that Russell and his accomplices made on singles like “Let’s Go Swimming” and Indian Ocean’s “School Bell/Treehouse,” you’ll be familiar with the sound here. On these recordings, Russell (who plays cello, guitar, keyboards, and percussion) is joined primarily by Mustafa Ahmed and Peter Zummo, and the three of them produce an abstract cross between pop and R&B, constructed with drum machines and more organic instrumentation on top. None of these songs woo a crowd of dancers as so many of Russell’s short-lived aliases did before; instead, they’re more rooted in song-based pop. This goes for the structure of the tracks, and it also goes for the subject matter of the lyrics. One of the greatest joys of listening to these songs is the regular presence of Russell’s gentle, somewhat timid voice, which delivers one heartwarming line after another. If you’re thinking this might possibly resemble a shoestring-budget, avant-garde version of Jam & Lewis, you’re not too far off. With the many hats Russell wore, Calling out of Context should hammer home the fact that he was also a dynamite writer of heart-on-sleeve love songs — not just a formidable cellist and innovative disco producer. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi |

EP $9.99 Based on its length (just under half an hour), Will Kimbrough’s self-titled offering in 2007 is either a really short album or a very long EP. It is billed as the latter, and given how much session work Kimbrough does as a guitarist for country artists, it’s entirely possible he didn’t have time to put together more than these eight songs. They are enough, however, to whet the appetite of any curious listener and leave any serious fan salivating for more. Though the term “Americana” is the kiss of death for most artists these days (because it would appear to be a catchall that doesn’t fit anywhere else), Kimbrough’s music comes right from the heart of traditional American song forms: Appalachian balladry, raw bluegrass, hillbilly blues, rock & roll, and folk songs. The contrast between the guitars and cello of the bluesy back-porch “Eden Prairie” and the sheer folk waltz of “Interstate,” with guitar, mandolin, brushed drums, and upright bass, are two cases in point. “Horseshoe Lake” may be played on acoustic guitars, mandos, upright bass, and cello, but it walks through the same kind of singer/songwriter rock Bruce Springsteen delved into on Tunnel of Love — without the slick production. “Yellow Mama” is a shimmering primitive ballad with beautiful slide guitar and banjo work. It’s a prayer, a protest song, and a criminal ballad, all rolled into one. “Half a Man,” a midtempo shuffling acoustic ballad with a full band, sounds utterly lush in comparison to its predecessors. The closer, “Love Is the Solution,” with its lonesome strings and spoken word lyric, is a blues from a different era. Its message is profound, spelled out in simple terms that could have been written by Tom Russell, and shows his influence. It’s hard to tell where a recording like this one might drop — and hopefully not into obscurity.
