Why is it called “District of Columbia”? what in the world does Columbia have to do with our capital!?

okay, i know i must come off as a complete idiot, but democrats are …
enough said.

and ftr, i’m quitting cello and going to flute- i feel that yo yo ma betrayed us yesterday.

Washington was designated part of the District of Columbia because the early Americans thought the capital of the nation should be independent of all of the states. They wanted to avoid the possibility of any state getting special privileges as the host of the national capital. They also wanted to make sure that Washington operated under federal laws, not under any state laws (which would have created the confusing situation of a national capital under a state jurisdiction).

Classic Yo-Yo Ma

Classic Yo-Yo Ma

$13.99

To categorize CLASSIC YO-YO as simply a greatest-hits collection would be inaccurate. This compilation offers a glimpse of the breadth of a great artist’s ability. It effectively conveys the essence of Yo-Yo Ma, not simply the virtuosity of a supremely gifted cellist–arguably the finest of his time–but the intelligence, insight, and assiduousness of a musician who continually seeks new challenges, explores diverse musical territories, and refuses to be pigeonholed. The album begins, appropriately, with his remarkable account of the Prelude from J. S. Bach’s Cello Suite No. 1, continuing through to an eclectic assortment that includes Piazzolla tangos, a Gershwin Prelude, and an excerpt from Tan Dun’s score for the film CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON, as well as pieces by Faur?, Brahms, and Dvor k. The disc also features tracks from the “Appalachian” collaborations with Edgar Meyer and Mark O’Connor, and several bonuses in the form of previously unreleased material: Piazzolla’s Tango Sensation: FEAR and new recordings of John Williams’ “American Collection” Theme and the Shaker hymn “Simple Gifts” featuring Alison Krauss. CLASSIC YO-YO is an excellent introduction for the uninitiated, but also holds value for anyone already familiar with the work of this extraordinary artist.

Romantic Cello

$6.99

This selection contains both ADD and DDD recordings.ROMANTIC CELLO is a greatest-hits collection that offers several much-beloved nineteenth-and early twentieth-century cello works of a soaring melodic nature, performed by a veritable all-star team of cellists. There is quite a lot of variety here. The past is evoked fancifully by Peter Tchaikovsky in the courtly ‘Rococo Variations’ and with bittersweet nostalgia by Edward Elgar in the first movement of his moody Cello Concerto. An intense prayer is offered by Max Bruch in his ‘Kol Nidrei,’ and good old-fashioned heroics are supplied by Antonin Dvorak in the finale to his Cello Concerto. Doing the playing chores are Yo-Yo Ma (heard live in Saint Petersburg), Janos Starker, Ofra Harnoy, Steven Isserlis and Gregor Piatigorsky, so you know you’re in good hands throughout.

Includes:Yo-Yo Ma Inspired by Bach: The Sound of The Carceri (1997) Yo-Yo Ma Inspired by Bach: The Music Garden (1997) Yo-Yo Ma Inspired by Bach: The Sound of The Carceri Violin virtuoso Yo-Yo Ma has entertained audiences around the world with his extraordinary talents. This is the second of six Inspired by Bach programs that blends the music against a story of a short film. In this video the setting is Giovanni Piranesi’s prison etchings to address this master architect’s unfilled dreams, using vivid imaginary and three-dimensional computer graphics under Francois Girard’s talented hand. This unusual musical video addresses Yo-Yo Ma’s interpretations, imagination, and thoughts upon the this Bach selection against the etchings, hoping to pose questions about the nature of one’s perception and experiences. Mainly, this video brings together various mediums to explore musical ideas against the life of one man’s experiences. ~ Forrest Spencer, Rovi Yo-Yo Ma Inspired by Bach: The Music Garden Artistic idealism meets bureaucratic red tape in this first entry in the six-part series, Yo-Yo Ma: Inspired by Bach. Suite no. 1 for cello, entitled The Music Garden, provides the backdrop for this documentary as Ma invites garden designer Julie Moir Messervy to design an urban park that will visually interpret the aforementioned musical piece. Messervy and Ma — who initially expresses some doubts about the practicality of the project — quickly build momentum and enthusiasm behind their brainchild. But after some initial successes, they are met with just as many obstacles, forcing the duo to travel from Boston to Toronto to accomplish their rather lofty civic goals. ~ Ryan Shriver, Rovi

Includes:Yo-Yo Ma Inspired by Bach: Sarabande (1997) Yo-Yo Ma Inspired by Bach: Falling Down Stairs (1997) Yo-Yo Ma Inspired by Bach: Sarabande Quirky Canadian director Atom Egoyan helmed this, the only fictional entry in a series of six films, titled “Yo-Yo Ma Inspired Bach.” The story centers on the world-renowned cellist and is a free-form series of unrelated connections between people. As the story begins, Ma is flying to Toronto via Canadian Airlines. Meanwhile, his limo driver Sammy Angelopoulos patiently waits for him at the Air Canada terminal. Their connection, needless to say, is going to be delayed. Real estate agent Sarah is trying to find someone to buy the home of the aged Dr. Kassovitz. The trouble is, the good doctor refuses to sell unless the buyer promises to keep the furniture and his art collection intact. Sarah has a bad cough and goes to see the attractive Dr. Angela France, an amateur cellist who is attending one of Ma’s master classes. Dr. Kassovitz later gives Sarah tickets to Ma’s concert while her sweetie Max pays Dr. France a visit himself. Max hates classical music, but Sammy, another of Dr. France’s patrons adores it and hails Ma “an ambassador of God.” In the midst of all the connection making, Ma can be heard playing Bach’s Suite No. 4 for cello. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi Yo-Yo Ma Inspired by Bach: Falling Down Stairs Ice skaters Torville and Dean explain to cellist Yo-Yo Ma how they translate the composer’s notes into dance moves, and give a sample performance. This segment comes courtesy of Yo-Yo Ma’s Inspired by Bach series, in which the musician teams up with contemporary artists from a variety of media to create new works based upon the composer’s legendary works. ~ Michael Hastings, Rovi

Yo-Yo Ma Plays The Music Of John Williams

Yo-Yo Ma Plays The Music Of John Williams

$11.99

This selection is also available in Super Audio CD format. This selection is a DSD (Direct Stream Digital) recording.John Williams is known to most people through his scores for blockbuster films such as JURASSIC PARK, SCHINDLER’S LIST, JAWS, and the STAR WARS series, among others, but he is also a noted composer of concert works as well as a renowned conductor. This set features his compositions for cello, performed here by the inimitable Yo-Yo Ma with the composer himself wielding the baton. The album gets off to a rousing start with the Concerto for Cello and Orchestra, a piece that’s vintage Williams: a cinematic blend of majestic themes, brassy fanfares, and dramatic flourishes. The two other orchestral works on the disc are impressionistic tone poems that demonstrate the variety of Williams’s sonic palette–the Elegy for Cello and Orchestra sets plaintive melodies amid lush, swirling pastels, while Heartwood evokes a restless moodiness through dense, dark-hued harmonies. The Three Pieces for Solo Cello are showcases for the instrument that explore the full range of its sonorities, incorporating folk elements and touches of Americana along the way. Ma brings his usual artistic commitment and technical brilliance to the proceedings, dispatching the challenges and demands of the works with his customary aplomb. Williams’s crowd-pleasing compositional style and Ma’s dazzling artistry make a winning combination.

Beethoven: Complete Works for Cello and Piano

Beethoven: Complete Works for Cello and Piano

$13.98

The pellucid tone and refined technique of Yo-Yo Ma and the passionate interpretations and flashy virtuosity of Mischa Maisky have defined the poles of post-Rostropovich cello playing. In contrast, Heinrich Schiff may seem reserved to the point of being unemotional and self-effacing to the point of disappearing altogether. But as his 1998 recording of Beethoven’s complete works for cello and piano with Till Fellner demonstrate, Schiff is every bit as accomplished as Ma and Maisky. With his noble but subtle tone and flawless technique, there’s nothing here that Schiff cannot handle; not even the three sets of virtuoso variations are beyond him. What makes Schiff not just a great cellist but a great musician is his eagerness to let the music speak through him. Here (as was true in the classic recordings of Pierre Fournier), we hear Beethoven’s music as performed by Schiff, and not Schiff performing Beethoven’s music. For listeners who favor the performer at the expense of the composer, Schiff’s readings will be too restrained. For listeners who prefer the composer over the performer, though, his readings will be just right. Fellner is as brilliant an accompanist as he is a soloist, and Brilliant’s un-remastered digital sound from Decca’s originals is rich, deep, and detailed. ~ James Leonard, Rovi
