The number of Christmas cards that are sent each year across the globe numbers in the billions, with the average person sending out around 50 each. The tradition is more popular than ever and the few weeks before Christmas help to sustain card makers throughout the rest of the year. Here we look at the tradition of giving Christmas cards, from its inception to modern day options.

Early cards

Although it is possible that some homemade cards were sent prior to 1843, this year saw the sending of the first commercial card. The card was commissioned by Sir Henry Cole who asked his friend John Calcott Horsley to design and print one for him. Cole sent the design to personal and business acquaintances to bid them a Merry Christmas. The design of the card was somewhat controversial in that part of it depicted a small child attempting to drink from a wine glass. Cole had helped to introduce the Penny Post three years previously and the invention of Christmas cards proved a shrewd move.

Changing tastes

It is a common misconception today that early Christmas cards focussed on religious themes. However, they frequently entailed more fanciful designs such as flowers and animals to represent the fact that spring was just around the corner. The introduction of religious themes and winter scenery soon followed as the idea of Christmas cards spread into America thanks to printer Louis Prang.

LDS Sheet Music brings Good Music In Your Home

Our oldest daughter became a fully accomplished pianist, and her younger sister and brother is following in his foot steps. We are always on the lookout for LDS sheet music so we can have good music in our house. Currently Our first born is experiencing far his freshman year in college, and when she returned home for Christmas break, it is wonderful to hear her play the piano again. This is one of the things you take for granted until it is missing. Some benefits I enjoyed as a parent of a child playing good music in the home include:

Before our daughter came home for Christmas, he gave me some ideas of possible gifts for his birthday and Christmas (they are just a few days apart). And this year, as in the last few years, he has requested some LDS sheet music for piano.

A couple of years ago what he really wanted was a book of piano arrangements of LDS hymns. We had to just guess out of many books available, and is very happy with our choice. This book of LDS sheet music is full of beautiful song arrangements. Music is a pleasure for as much as he was able to share songs with family, friends and fellow church members.

My daughter shares her talent and good examples to us all. He will not stay asleep but will continue to care and develop his talent. With the guidance of his grandma, he is almost self-driven and directed. When he went to college last semester, he took a piano class to develop his companions and sight reading skills. Everybody who else in the class of music majors, it's a bit intimidating, but we all noticed when he returned home during the Christmas that his vision in reading skill has improved over. He had a new piece of LDS sheet music, then playing it with only two times, he had it down perfect note.

I firmly believe that music has an impact on people. I remember being in a dance as a teenager when the song "Burning Down the House" was played by DJ. Just then the fire alarm went off. Considering the cheering going on, I think that a majority of the crowd would have been excited if the building is actually burned down. By the same token, music can have a positive effect on people. Because of this, it makes me glad when I hear my kids listening to good music, and having LDS sheet music at home, led to great piano music, is a good influence on all who hear it.

Another great thing about the LDS sheet music is that you can get it at different levels of difficulty. Most are written for an intermediate to experienced pianist, but there are books available for the beginner pianist, as a basic songs. The book offers a good supplement to piano lessons because they are songs that Children are familiar with the hearing on a regular basis.
