What You've Never Read About Learning Classical Guitar
If you'd like to learn classical guitar, you are going to need to understand about things such as the bass fretboard and strings. You are definitely going to have to put in some time and effort here if you want to learn classical guitar properly, but here are a few pointers that will help get you off the ground and ensure that you have the most success.
Getting Started
If you want to learn classical guitar, step 1 will be for you to grasp what the classical guitar basically is and what it is about it that makes it different to the other instruments. Basically, the classical guitar is one of the most popular instruments, also commonly known as the acoustic guitar.
The classical guitar is characterized by its shape, strings, instrumental technique, and historic repertoire. This is an instrument that's got an established history, and that has developed significantly over time.
Learning the Strings
The next step if you want to learn classical guitar is to learn the strings. There are 1 or 2 tips particularly that may help you here, including that when you see a number apart from 0, press down between the space before the fret of that string, and then play that string. If you see a zero that means that it is an open string and then you do not hold any frets down.
You also have to know, if you would like to learn classical guitar, that you will need to always keep a beat when you're playing a song, and ensure your guitar is tuned to match the track. It will be difficult for you to understand when your guitar is in tune at first, but as you progress and get more used to it, tuning your guitar will become second nature.
Remember that most tabs do not slow rhythms and so you will need to listen to the actual song so that you can know how it is played. If there are one or two numbers on top of one another, what this implies is this is a chord. Fret all of those numbers at once and then strum the strings that the chord is a part of.
It may sound a bit difficult, especially if you have never played any musical instrument before, but you should know that it can be a lot of fun and you will end up with a great new skill that you can use for the rest of your life.

Why Cheap Log Cabins Are Becoming Popular
With the world population ballooning exponentially, more dwelling places such as houses, apartments, and condominiums need to be built. Unfortunately, this has caused urban sprawl, a phenomenon wherein the housing section of a metropolis uncontrollably spreads outwards to rural land. Urban sprawl is characterized withincreased pollution, noise, environmental degradation, and culture-bias issues. That is why many people venture into the the wild where they can enjoy the peace and quiet offered by nature. People who are amazed at the spectacular landscape, utter isolation, freedom from urban living, and the charm of the wilderness make a choice to reside in untamed land. And for their homes, most opt to live in expensive or timber log cabins.
For thousands of years, log cabins have been sturdy and dependable structures for human shelter. With more people trying to escape city life, they are becoming more popular. Here are some reasons you should consider a log cabin.
1. Log homes are erected with good craftsmanship, high standards, and custom touches. Thus, a log home's appraisal value is generally higher than standard homes of the same size.
2. A log cabin is considered to be one of the most beautiful types of homes. Its curb appeal can increase value and grow your investment exponentially. Come to think of it, many individuals are willing to pay high prices to own a log home.
3.Ordinary homes are made up of light steel frames and flimsy drywall. Log homes, on the other hand, are constructed out of solid wood. They can resistthe worst that Mother Nature can throw. Therefore, it is not surprising that in Europe, there are still fully functional and occupied log homes that are around 8 centuries old!
4. The density of solid wood used in making a log cabin blocks or deflect sound waves. Say goodbye to noise pollution.
5. Either expensive or cheap log cabins have better insulation than conventional drywall homes. Solid wood is naturally warm to the touch, and it has good thermal mass, meaning, the wooden walls help regulate temperatures inside the home constant and at a comfortable level. If you want to save on heating bills, then residing in a log home is the perfect solution. Seal your cabin properly and you can save 15 to 20 percent of your heating and cooling bills.
6. Log homes are easy to maintain. Periodically treating the logs with flame retardant and anti-termite treatment as well as regularly cleaning them are probably the only things you have to do to maintain your home. If you see problems or onsets of structural problems, you can call a professional to make the repairs.

Classical Guitar History
Alternative Classical Guitars, Including Portuguese And Flat Top
Although its exact history is a little hazy, and subject to much discussion, it is thought that the traditional Portuguese guitar can be traced back as far as the medieval period, and although you will often find references that suggest that it was based on the traditional English guitar, this is most certainly not the case, in particular for the very good reason that there simply is no such thing! The Portuguese guitar is a traditional twelve string instrument which is most notable for its use in the traditional Portuguese Fado music.
When people suggest that the Portuguese guitar comes from the traditional English guitar, what is really being referred to here is not ancestry of design, but rather the quality of build. It was at the time that the Portuguese guitar was being designed and introduced that England was famous for making guitars, and the reputation of these English guitars was very solid. The Portuguese guitar is therefore a descendent of the period when guitars were being made to a high standard in England. Rather than of English origin, the Portuguese guitar is more likely to have its roots in either the medieval citar, or the lute which came from Arabic traditions.
More than likely it was a combination of both of these types of instrument. The Portuguese is an example of a classic guitar, but is not the only type of classic guitar to be available as an alternative to the traditional ones. Another popular type of classical guitar is the flat top steel string guitar. The main difference is that instead of using nylon to create the strings, they are made from steel. This provides a significantly different timbre to the note, but because it has to be tensed and stretched to a very high degree, it has affected the overall shape of the guitar. Often people think that the shape of a flat top guitar is to enhance sound or create some alternate quality of sound to a normal guitar, but it is largely based purely on ensuring that the guitar is strong enough to withstand the tension of the steel strings, since a normal guitar structure would more than likely simply snap in half during the initial tuning up.
The neck of a steel strung guitar is very much reinforced, and the design gives it a strong look and feel. The body is also usually much larger than a normal classic guitar, and also thought his is to act as an extra brace for the strings, it also adds a greater resonance for the notes. The sound created by steel strings rather than nylon ones is described as being much brighter and crisper, and often people suggested that it creates a much louder sound too.
Flat top guitars or steel strung guitars are most often to be found used in traditional folk music, country, jazz and blues, and the music associated with these genres can be thought to reflect the characteristics of the guitar used. A third alternative to the traditional classic guitar is the archtop guitar, and these again used steel strings rather than nylon, creating the crisp bright sound, but the distinctive feature of an archtop guitar is a f-hole which looks very similar to the design of a violin.
The top and back of the guitar’s body are carved in this distinctive curved fashion, and the shape is derived from a similar style of mandolin created by the Gibson Guitar Corporation. The archtop guitar can be made available in either the classic form, or as an electric equivalent, and the sound created by these guitars is quite distinctive and has proven very popular with musicians from both the classical and country traditions, and popular music, with the country musicians using the acoustic version of the archtop, and the popular music musicians using its electric equivalent, which often comes with a tremolo arm, particularly when used in rock music.

Bollywood: An Anthology of Songs from Popular Indian Cinema $16.98 This whopping two-disc set from Silva collects popular Bollywood tunes between 1957, with Asha Bhosle’s first vocal and cinematic appearance, in a film called Asha (and yes, she appears a great deal here, being the most recorded vocalist in Indian history) with the tune “Ina Mina Dika,” through to 2001′s “Khamoshian Gungunane Lagin” by Lata Mangheskar and Sonu Nigam from the film One 2 Ka 4. What is so remarkable about the collection isn’t so much the various Indian classical and pop styles that are on offer here; that’s a forgone conclusion. But the sheer wild appropriation of other styles and genres, like the aforementioned “Ina Mina Dika” that uses a faux Benny Goodman arrangement and has an electric guitar playing Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode” riff in the middle with a full horn section as well as a harmonica! Also included is the wooly “Ae Naujawan Hai,” with vocals by Asha. It became a smash dance hit in India — and was later sampled by the Black Eyed Peas. Also included here is “Zindagi Jhoom Kar,” sung by the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, who lays out a strong Sufi spiritual atmosphere into what would become a pop song. This is a fine collection for the price and should be picked up by anyone interested in the genre. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi |

Fairytales $36.98 After winning the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest, Alexander Rybak was naturally a sensation throughout Europe and scored a big hit with his debut album, Fairytales, titled after the prize-winning song. It’s a light album, with less than ten songs and a running time under 40 minutes (not counting bonus material), but this initial showcase of recording material shows promise and should please Rybak fans who enjoy “Fairytale.” Like that song, the bulk of the album is written by the 22-year-old violinist, who thoroughly demonstrates not only his songwriting talent but also his talents for musical composition and English-language vocals. Part of the appeal of Rybak, of course, involves his back-story. Recounted many times, the story begins in 1987, when he was born in Minsk to musically inclined parents, the father a classical violinist, the mother a classical pianist. At four years old, Rybak and his family moved from Minsk, then part of the Soviet Union, to Norway. He began playing piano at the age of five and began studies at the Barratt Due Institute of Music in Oslo at the age of ten. A little over ten years later he made Eurovision history when, as the representative of Norway, he garnered 387 points, the highest tally ever. In the wake of his history-making Eurovision win, Rybak began working with a few different producers and came up with the nine songs comprising Fairytales. The title track, with its memorable violin refrain, was a chart-topping smash hit in a half-dozen countries across Europe. The follow-up singles “Funny Little World” and “Roll with the Wind” were less successful but stand out as album highlights all the same. “Funny Little World” addresses Rybak’s newfound fame with a sunny set of lyrics, and the song is almost entirely free of violin, driven instead by acoustic guitar and a light drum track. On the other hand, violin figures prominently in “Roll with the Wind,” the lively album opener with a Celtic air, one of only two songs not … |

Kamasutra: Vollendung der Liebe $18.98 It’s hard to believe that it took more than 40 years for this album to surface, since it’s undeniably an important piece of history and arguably a bit of a lost Krautrock classic. Kamasutra was a sexually themed 1969 film by director Kobi Jaeger. Future Can keyboardist Irmin Schmidt, who by that time was both an experienced classical musician/conductor and a soundtrack composer, was hired to provide the music. The group he brought to the sessions was the Inner Space, which would become Can by the time of their 1969 debut album, Monster Movie. Recorded right around — likely just before — the Monster Movie sessions, this then is more or less Can’s “real” debut album. Even now, details on the sessions are scant — the CD booklet contains copious liner notes about the film and, curiously, nothing about the music. Album credits are also maddeningly unspecific, but it’s been confirmed that Schmidt is joined here by Can men Malcolm Mooney on vocals, drummer Jaki Liebezeit, and guitarist Michael Karoli, and it’s a good bet that the featured flutist is original Can/Inner Space member David C. Johnson, who departed in 1969, and that the bassist is indeed Holger Czukay. With the exception of the Mooney-fronted, Velvet Underground-on-acid “There Was a Man,” the music Schmidt and company came up with for Kamasutra is different enough from Monster Movie or the contemporaneously recorded Delay…1968 that you probably wouldn’t immediately guess in a blindfold test that this was Can, but there are definitely connecting threads. Much of Can’s early music was, after all, written for soundtracks, and moving from the thumping, hypnotic funk-rock grooves of “In Kalkutta III” to the tumbling, Eastern-tinged psychedelia of “Im Tempel” and “Im Orient” and the bluesy, proto-Krautrock guitar workout “Mundharmonika Beat,” it’s not too tough to connect the dots to some of Can’s first flowerings. ~ J. Allen, Rovi |

Lute-Guitar, 6 String in Lacewood $699 The lute-guitar is an attractive instrument of a similar size to the guitar but with a body like a lute. With a neck shaped like that of a guitar and a 51mm (2 inch) nut of ebony, it will appeal to those who are familiar with normal classical or acoustic guitars. It is tuned like a guitar with six strings, three of plain nylon and three of nylon wound in nickel. If it is to be used for lute music, the 3rd string may be tuned a semi-tone down to F# to enable the application of lute fingering. Spruce is used for the unpolished soundboard in keeping with original lutes and its soundhole has a carved rose in an attractive geometric pattern. In keeping with the lute, the characteristically bowl-shaped body is achieved by edge-gluing together slats of thin wood bent to a specific shape with no internal structure to retain its form. The overall length is 953 mm (37.5 inches) and the scale length is 648 mm (25.5 Inches), similar to a normal guitar. A hard case is included with this instrument. The lute has a long history dating back to pre-biblical times and although it has existed in many forms it may be classified as either short- or long-necked. The European lute and its ancestor, the oud, (or, ‘al’ud’ meaning ‘the wood’) are examples of the short-necked variety and were later developments. Examples of the lute-guitar, or some may call it guitar-lute, were plentiful in Germany towards the end of the 19th century and whilst it may be thought of as a type of guitar due to its stringing, six-course versions of the lute were also known in the Renaissance period. The term ‘course’ refers to the arrangement of the stringing. A ‘course’ may contain single, double or even triple strings, thus the guitar has single-string courses whereas the lute would be double strung. As with the German examples the lute-guitar has a bridge reminiscent of Baroque guitars with upturned ‘moustaches’ at the ends and pegs to retain the strings. It is best to tie a small stopper knot in the end of t |

Narada Presents: The Best of Celtic Christmas $12.99 Narada Records has a long history of brilliant world music compilations and Christmas samplers, and this enjoyable, joyous yet often poignant gathering of Celtic music’s brightest stars adds another beautiful ornament to that evergreen tree. The key to any successful musical smorgasbord is variety, and this celebration of the holidays in Ireland offers that in abundance. Cathie Ryan’s folksy “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear” opens the disc whimsically, while Kathy Mattea’s rich, soulful voice imparts the “Christ Child’s Lullabye” with a convincing refrain of “Hallelujah!” and simple, hypnotic guitar accompaniment. Each tune features a different lead instrument or vocal: flute (“Christmastime in Ashland”), a soft, classical-flavored choir (“Nowel”), acoustic guitar and pennywhistle (the festive “The Mummer’s Jig/Christmas Eve”), and yet more pennywhistle and small Irish-accented choir (“I Saw Three Ships”). It’s not all happy clappy, however. The festive mood is beautifully balanced by sad reflections like Natalie MacMaster’s “Get Me Through December,” which may remind you that the holidays aren’t a joyous affair for those who are suffering. Listeners who find themselves in a funk may just snap out of it after hearing this thoughtful gathering. ~ Jonathan Widran, Rovi |

Odyssey $19.98 The combination of rock and classical elements are heightened on Bedford’s musical portrayal of Homer’s Odyssey as his multi-layered keyboard work solidly defines the essence of each individual track. Conjuring up mood, compelling rhythmic textures, and elaborate choral arrangements that float above the use of the Hammond organ and the ARP 2600 synthesizer, Bedford with the help of the Queen’s College Choir presents a conceptual piece that stays magnificently on course without losing its progressive rock overtones. Mike Oldfield plays guitar on “The Phaeacian Games” and again on “The Sirens” while Andy Summers makes an appearance here as well, contributing his guitar know-how on “Circe’s Island” before becoming part of the Police. Even with the utilization of these guitar virtuosos, the emphasis cannot be sidetracked from Bedford’s dexterity and excellence as a keyboard player. Throughout these 11 tracks, he summons up the powerful history of Greek lore by customizing his keyboards to dictate the beauty or the fervency of each individual reference. “The Battle in the Hall” is set to a rambunctious pace, while the five inclusions of “Penelope’s Shroud” reflects the subtlety of the piano and organ. His employment of such simplistic props as wine glasses, lone gongs, and cymbals don’t go unnoticed either, and the welcomed addition of oboes and recorders helps to reinforce a classical ambience in a number of pieces. This album along with 1975′s The Ancient Mariner are Bedford’s greatest solo achievements, with The Odyssey exhibiting a more progressive environment on the whole. ~ Mike DeGagne, Rovi |
