Making Biodiesel at Home Part 1

Hi! My name is Graydon Blair and on behalf of Parleys Diesel Performance and Utah biodiesel supply now we are going to show you how to make a large batch of biodiesel. We are going to show you how we collect oil, we'll talk a little bit about how we filter the oil, how we transfer oil to a biodiesel processer, how we process, and then how we will use the fuel. We are going to talk about various things along the way started to say.

First of all we have a store, we go out and collect oil in 55 gallon drums. We put the drums behind the restaurant that we have contracted, and they put oil on the drums, and then we take them back to store it behind a truck. We have a lift gate on the back of the truck so it makes it very easy to swap them in and out. A lot People who try to collect the oil with pumps, they would go and they really pump the oil, and we tried for a little while, but a lift gate is just so much easier. They are about 2,500 to 3,500 dollars but they are the best thing in the world. If you get one be sure do not let your uncles, aunts, friends, and others because I know soon you will be transporting pianos down the road. They are just a wonderful piece equipment in a truck. However, what we do when we go to collect the oil, we will bring a keg back here, take it right about here, then we can get a filter. And it looks nice and kind of nasty. It is a 400-100 micron filter baron. We put it inside the barrel, and we filter the oil. When we filtered oil is finished we haul it to a production facility that I'll show you in a moment, and we make biodiesel.

I want to tell you a little about what we use here. Remember our smaller setting we talked about the use of methanol, sodium, and oil. Well, until Here is our methanol. methanol This is a 325 gallon tank. Most of you will not need anything this big, but we make so much fuel we get it delivered to us. Then we go through this and we bring it back to our place. You can get it pretty cheap when you get it this way. It is a 55 gallon drum. This is basically how methanol is purchased. This is one common way. The easiest way to bring it home, it can be put on the back of a pick-up. And then when you get it home you get to transport it to the back of your biodiesel processor.

These are our barrels glycerin, and as we made our gasoline if you'll remember right we had our byproduct of glycerin. So we just make the glycerin out of the machine and we have come here over and pour we have it right on the barrels glycerin. The glycerin is going to contain the crude glycerin, some soap, some catalyst, and some methanol. We cover the barrels up, we use our lift-gate, we throw it behind the truck, and we haul it over to a waste water treatment plant where they get it off our hands. add them to their methane digester that produces methane gas which they use to run their generators. We get rid of it that way. They did not charge us for it, we paid to get it taken off our hands, but it is a good way to get rid of it. When we get the glycerin from out of here then we can take gasoline out of here and make biodiesel from it. I'll show you in a moment how we make gasoline.

Then we have our filtered oil, a drum such as this, we get a sump pump. And all this is a good cheap old sump pump from Home Depot, Lowe's, what you have. We've mounted a huge profit on it, and a tube, and we use it to fill the entire engine oil. We just turn it on, it works great, we put the drum to dollies so we can move them over to our equipment, we produce biodiesel. A moment ago we showed you some methanol. It is a methanol drum right here. This is just a bomb that we have attached to it so we can quickly methanol pump in our machine. We're going to make a batch now so you can see how that works. Methanol, oil, and then if he pans over my side over here, this is lots and lots of catalyst. This particular catalyst contains potassium hydroxide, and we use it to make biodiesel. Takes note methanol, oil and catalyst to produce gasoline. I am back on the right fuel. It is biodiesel that we made in our machines. We'll show you how that ended, and fuel that it is ready to use in diesel pickups. Again remember this was made for about a dollar a gallon, and we save ourselves a lot of money By using what normal people would throw away. Welcome to biodiesel, we'll show you how to filter, we make a batch, and on our way.

When we brought our oil in our warehouse we have to filter it. To make biodiesel it is a really good idea to filter it to get you all your crustys and crunchys out. This is just a 55-gallon drum sieve. It is a 400 micron. This is the one we personally use. Seems kind of remarkable and uky but We tend to put about 3,500 gallons of fuel through the filter. So it is very durable and they last long. This is only a poly based filter. You can get them at most sites. Take a look at my site I can carry it as well. We're going to put filters on, we're going to get Our oil and just simply hard by it. Today, oil comes from the restaurant was really gross, and ugly. As you see there are some crustys and stuff on here, and as you notice it does not like to go through it real quick so we get ourselves a spatula with rounded corners, and We scour only recurrent crustys let go out. So oil is just going through the filter. Can you hear it filtering down there? When it filtered we bring it to our lab or in our shop and make biodiesel. So we're going to kind of let it sit here for a while as we go. Something I want to show you though, a lot of times you are going to get very thicky crap oil and need to get rid of crustys. So we cut the car boy open which is what you are going to basically get oil, and we just scrub it in there. So again I'm just moving back and forth very slowly. You can see some of the chunks that I'm getting out of that. It is usually food particles and stuff from the grill, it's French fries, just all the things they put in oil on the surface and the restaurant really do not want in your tank. Especially in your truck, okay? I'm just going to filter that out, and our next step is shows you how we load machine, full of oil. Then we're going to make a batch. So we will see in a second.

Our next step is that we filtered the oil so now it's time to make biodiesel. Remember from before, to make biodiesel you need a heated mixture, so I happen to have sitting next to me one heck of a heated mixture. This is a stainless steel piece of equipment in a giant mixer in it, and A large heater below. It allows me to make biodiesel very fast, and in a fairly automated way. Now you do not need to biodiesel something like this, but we do so much that we like it. Let me tell you just how much we make. You've seen gasoline sitting behind me a minutes ago. Last year alone we produce 6800 gallons of fuel that we used a variety of diesel pickups. Anything from a 07 down to a 93 Duramax DT466 F350 sa stapid a major international harvester engine, and we are running biodiesel in all of that. We have a Ford, Chevy, Dodge and one that we run so we got it all across the gammit. We know about what it's going to do. We're here in Utah and we have cold winters outside and we're starting to blend. We make our first biodiesel from canola oil, canola is wonderful added diesel cold flow properties, so when it gets down to about 50 degrees we start blending. Before we can pretty much handle it. Some of our diesels are a little bit more sensitive, others are not. Pretty much if it is diesel is a biodiesel handle, and handle it very well. That's anything from dump Trucks, the big earth movers, farm equipment, tiny TIS. you name it if it's got a diesel engine in it and it is directly injected or not injected directly chances are it will run on biodiesel. Believe it or not, Rudolph Diesel when he made his biodiesel engine's goal is to have an engine that was ubiquitous in all sorts of oils, and just happens to biodiesel be one of those that run within it.
