Drum Building 101 – How to Wrap a Drum Shell

First you need to cut your wrap in size. An easy way to do this is to wrap it around your drum shell and mark the edge of the shell all the way around. Wrap some manufacturers do not make a wrap to go all the way around of large drums, so you end up having to use 2 pieces for larger drums – mark your cut lines around the top of the shell. You can use a sharp pair of scissors to cut the wrap. Sparkles is a little easier to cut than glass glitter wraps. Plan your scissors sharpened regularly as needed You cut a lot of wrap.

After you cut your wrap to the length of your shell, you have to cut it down to the diameter of your shell. An easy way to do this is to use a flexible measuring tape (for sewing) to measure all the way around the shell and add an extra inch for overlap.

Now lay the wrap down flat and measure out that distance and use a straight edge to mark your next cut. Now you wrap lay down flat on the ground and mark the center of the wrap in a piece of tape. Now you need to do a test fit in your wrap. The age old question is always "Where should tailor go? "Most companies do this drum, toms, under a drag, kick, below which it saw, Snare, under the strainer to hide it. You will want no less than 1 "of overlap for your incision. To make sure you line up your gluing seam when you need to get your test plate fit around the drum as tight as possible, your seam lines up with your designated area, and then move the center of your wrap marks the edge of the shell. Also mark each end of your wrap where the overlap is in the shell.

To achieve maximum adhesion need to scuff / tear up the shell and the back side of the wrap. The best way to do this is to use 80 grit sand paper and sand the entire surface of the drum and the back of the wrap (not sand through your wrap). You'll also need to peel back the protective plastic wrap in front of where your seam is, measure your 1 inch seam and tape off areas you do not want to scuff up or get glue, and sand it down as well.

You can even lightly score the seam with a razor.

Lay your shell on a flat surface with your center mark facing you, then grab your wrap is also your center mark facing you, and very scoot partial wrap your shell closer until you finally connect to the center, lining up the marks. This step is critical because once your Wrap and shell touch, no going back.

Wrap your scoot around the table to line up the marks made on shell and wrap.

Apply pressure from the out-center, slowly wrapping the wrap around the shell. Make sure to wrap the right edge of your seam down first, you want to cover up the sanded side of wrapper with the clean parts. Before you follow the seam together, remove the piece of tape the seam secret place or someone you chances of getting stuck some tape over your incision! Now You need to apply some pressure all around the drum to get any bubbles that may have formed! You can use a j-roller going from the out-center.

Also take special care to rolling the seam to make sure it is good and tight.

Sometimes when you apply a wrap you'll end up spiraling wrap that looks like this … You can use scissors to cut it flush with the edge of the shell, or what I have found that the best in trimming down the wrap is a tool Skil made by Sharp called the Auto Power Cutter.
