You do tune drums, but not to a specific note. Tuning drums is about getting the two heads of the drum to be tight so they respond and ring out, but also to get them to a tension where they respond to each other. There are a lot of good books out there, like ” A Funky Primer”, or “Basic Drumming” by Joel Rothman (also called “The Big Pink Book”). If you want to play other band’s music, it’s tough to find sheet music for drums because there isn’t much of a market for it, most drummers just listen to the recordings and learn the parts from that. As far as how hard to hit, that depends on how loud you want to be but you rarely want to beat the crap out of the drums.

I would encouarge you to start taking private lessons, that will help tremendously as you learn. Also, as a good resource going forward, you should join an online drum chat forum where you can ask more experienced drummers for advice. I like www.drumchat.com, but there are others out there as well.
