My band needs to play at a dance for a crowd of 30-55 year olds. We usually play classic-style rock but not really “dancing” songs. We need to play for about an hour in total and besides a couple original songs we are going to play I think we need to redo our whole set list. Dave Brubeck Quartet concert at Newport Jazz Festival on 04 Jul 64 $5.98 A legendary, revered figure in jazz, pianist-composer Dave Brubeck has always been a reliable draw for George Wein over the past 55 years at the Newport Jazz Festival. In fact, his recent appearance at the 2009 festival, at age 90, was as highly anticipated an event as Brubeck’s first appearance at Newport back in 1954. Brubeck’s performance at the 1964 festival with his regular quartet featuring longtime right-hand man Paul Desmond on alto sax, Eugene Wright on bass, and Joe Morello on drums was typically swinging, imbued with intricate counterpoint and polyrhythms and marked by signature odd time signatures, as on his classic “Blue Rondo a la Turk” (9/8) and “Unsquare Dance” (7/4) and Desmond’s most famous composition, “Take Five” (5/4). Their appearance at the ’64 Newport Jazz Festival came on the heels of a 10-day tour of Japan, which inspired Brubeck to write some new material, some of which was premiered during this Fourth of July set. They open with a bluesy sketch which would later be more fully developed as “Osaka Blues” on 1964′s Jazz Impressions of Japan (one of the lesser known gems in Brubeck’s discography). After stating the opening theme, Desmond begins his solo with a buttery-smooth tone and agile, blues-tinged lines on alto sax. Brubeck follows by stretching out on an exploratory piano solo that pushes the harmonic envelope while also revealing a decided Earl Hines influence. Wright, the rock of this quartet, then steps out with a nimble bass solo and Morello wraps up this series of solos with some whirlwind work on the kit before the quartet returns to the bluesy theme. Next up is another number influenced by their trip to the Far East, “Koto Song,” in which Brubeck cleverly invokes folk melodies of Japan in the fabric of the delicate piece, which is essentially a minor key modal blues. All Right.” The latter song, written in the 1950s by Buddy Holly, resurfaced a decade later on the Clapton/Winwood/Baker/Grech supergroup LP, Blind Faith. The show offers another surprise with Santana’s re-make of the 1967 R&B gem. “One Chain (Don’t Make No Prison)” and closes the show with a brilliant version of “Open Invitation.” Originally formed in 1966 as the Santana Blues Band (the name came about because the Musician’s Local 802 Union required one member to be listed as the leader and the group picked Santana, although at the time, he was just one of the members), by 1968, they had become what would be the last of the great San Francisco-era bands to emerge to national prominence. Promoter Bill Graham shortened the name to simply Santana and pushed the shy Mexican-born guitarist to the forefront of the band, which also included Gregg Rollie on organ and vocals, David Brown on bass, Jose Chepito Areas on percussion, and Michele Shrieve on drums. Trying to top it would be a daunting task, and on Tomboy, Noah Lennox doesn? t attempt it. Instead, he strips away the samples that made Person Pitch so hallucinatory and focuses on guitars, drums, and emotive melodies. A few found sounds make their way into the bookends ? You Can Count on Me? and the beatific ? Benfica,? giving the impression that Tomboy picks up right where Person Pitch left off, but the album? s overall sound is much sparer: the aptly named ? Drone? and the smoky ? Scheherazade? are downright minimalistic compared to what came before. Yet Tomboy is just as dreamy and hypnotic in its own way, with Lennox’s familiarly looping melodies and structures coated in so much reverb and delay that an intricate collage of samples isn? t necessary to make these songs transporting. ? Friendship Bracelet? is more than trippy enough as it flutters by on na? ve electronics, while ? Slow Motion? is submerged in dub-inspired effects and keyboards. USED: Murder City Devils $5.99 The Murder City Devils strutted onto the scene with their 1997 eponymous debut, which unleashed straight-ahead punk weighted down with the leg irons of heavy rock. The creepy-crawly organ lends a horror movie mood, and the gravelly growl of Spencer Moody’s voice evokes all the despair of finding yourself alone again at last call. Along with layers of sleazy rock guitar, these foundations make the Murder City Devils a raw rock force to be reckoned with; however, on this album the band is still finding its sea legs. These were the days when Moody still had his Poindexter image — neat Oxford shirt and round glasses on a cherubic face — hinting that his punk was all inside, until he released his demons onstage. The poor recording quality, which has thin sound and tinny drums, deflects from the songs’ power. The album has an intoxicating grit and swagger, though, with moments that shine. The keyboards on “Dance Hall Music” tempt with melodic quicksand that provides a backbone to thick muddy guitars. And “Boom Swagger Boom” is a classic of self-assured sexy fun with a playful campiness — handclaps punctuate a slinky spy theme melody with Moody’s gruff voice joined by coy female backing vocals. “Get Off the Floor” is hard driving punk with a sly guitar and pulverizing lyrics, highlighting Moody’s ability to take a few words and drive them into your skull, making a song out of repetition and varied rhythm.
