Why Plastic Drums Are Excellent Alternatives To Ship Goods

Shipping industries are becoming some of the most successful businesses around the globe. The reason behind is that is actually because all kinds of product trades should go through shipping. In terms of materials involved industrially, they are actually kept securely in steel or perhaps in some cases plastic drums and through this they can be shipped from one country to another until they reach where they are supposed to be. In the United States, steel drums tend to be used by shipping companies for containing products for transports, especially highly corrosive materials such chemicals along with other industrial and flammable substances. However, there are lots of disadvantages in using steel drums. You can see that a poly drum can be beneficial for shipping many items.

Exactly why a lot of shipping companies do use steel drums for durable and structural containment. Even so, let's consider the disadvantages. Steel drums contain the tendency to rust and that makes them unqualified to contain substances that may be harmful if open unnecessarily. It might definitely cost you so much to keep steel drums though there might be ways on how to do it. To maintain the quality of such container drums, painting and cleaning will have to be done every now and then. Make this happen accordingly to prevent leakages that can harm the environment. This is really true and these type of drums have actually become the most biggest pollutants in our seas and communities all over the world. You might be asking at this time what can be the answer to this problem and all that is left is plastic container drums.

Consider plastic drums for shipping different items These kinds of drums are definitely qualified for shipping goods because of the characteristics they have. Although steel drums are prone to rusting, plastic drums are a 100 % rust proof and are highly protected to various climate conditions. Plastic drums are indeed the best means for successful storage and shipping because of the protection and containment they can give to even the most harmful chemical and flammable materials. You could be seeking more? If you might notice plastic drums comes in different shapes and forms making them suitable for any kind, amount, or volumes of items, products, or materials. It is true that a poly drums may be your best choice for transporting many liquds.

Much more advantages can be carried out in merely using plastic drum containers. With regards to value, plastic drums are definitely far cost effective that steel drums. Two, plastic drums for containment and shipping are produced well with the best polymer materials and engineered with great precision to prevent spilling of harmful chemicals. One more thing, the load won't be a problem for they are not that heavy when compared with steel drums, making them simple to transfer. Last and not the least, plastic drums are compatible to hand trucks, parrot breaks, forklift and hoists.

They may not be as extravagant as steel drums, but a lot of industrial companies for example shipping lines have actually transitioned by using plastic drums for containment of various materials for transport. When you are wanting to have those products or goods you have be shipped to another place, consider keeping them in plastic drum containers for they cannot only guarantee safety of the items, but most especially being inexpensive and 100% effective.

Nelson Rangell Look Again Jazz Music CD Review

The exceptionally talented Jazz artist Nelson Rangell has released him CD entitled Look Again. I am very confident and happy to announce that I believe Nelson Rangell fans, and Jazz fans alike will be pleased with this one. With the release of Look Again Nelson Rangell’s artistic excellence is on full display as Rangell has once again delivered a brilliant collection of tracks that could very well be him best work to date.

Nelson Rangell has been a heavy hitter in the Jazz genre for quite some time now and Look Again is an excellent illustration as to why.

About the Author

Notebook reviews

Can anyone recommend some new Jazz music?

Specifically, I’d love to listen to something post 1990, and something comprised of mostly guitar, drums, and piano–a really bare bones sound. I’m not too into horns and strings. I’ve heard a lot of the older jazz, but I know very little about “new jazz.” If anyone can recommend some a cool jazz trio focused around piano, guitar, and drums that would be dope.

Some really dope tunes by a trio, more to come later:

Oscar Peterson – On The Sunny Side Of The Street

Pat Metheny Trio – All The Things You Are

Oscar Peterson – The More I See You

'Round Midnight

‘Round Midnight

$11.99

Criminally unsung pianist and singer Andy Bey had the most visible career after he and his sisters Salome and Geraldine Bey broke up their performing trio after an 11-year run in 1967, but this family singing ensemble was far more than just the act that launched Andy, and he wasn’t really the focus of the group. All three siblings were highlighted equally in the trio, and their harmonies together were the ethereal kind that can only happen in a family where all involved have grown up hearing each other’s voices and phrasing every single day. The Bey trio recorded very little together, unfortunately, just a single album for RCA in 1961 and two albums for Prestige, Now! Hear!, released in 1964, and this one, ‘Round Midnight, from 1965. Part gospel, part muted R&B, part stylized blues, the Bey trio was also very much a jazz outfit, due in no small part to Andy’s underappreciated piano playing and the presence of bop veterans like Milt Hinton on bass, Osie Johnson on drums, and Kenny Burrell (who appears on about half of the tracks here) on guitar. In essence, the Bey trio sounded like a thinned-out and more jazzy, gauzy version of the Staple Singers. Highlights from this reissue, which is quite short (only around 33 minutes) by modern CD standards, are a wonderfully balanced version of Ray Charles’ “Hallelujah, I Love Her So,” a stirring take on Billie Holiday’s “God Bless the Child,” the ever expanding and ascending “Feeling Good,” and a fine rendition of the title track, Thelonious Monk’s “‘Round Midnight,” which has never been the easiest song in the world to sing effectively, but the trio nails it here in what might have been deemed a definitive version if it had actually been heard by more than a handful of people. Prestige released Andy Bey & the Bey Sisters in 2000, which includes both the trio’s albums for the label on one disc, and that is definitely the way to go, although this short set does do a decent job showing off the range and talents of thi…

1000 Hurts

1000 Hurts

$26.98

Don’t expect 1000 Hurts to open your ears to anything new. Shellac’s sound hasn’t developed much. Are they yanking chains by periodically releasing selections from one extremely fruitful session? Only the band and a few tape operators know. No other band sounds like them, which legitimizes this status quo. The jagged scrapes of Steve Albini’s guitar, the somewhat laggard bass from Bob Weston, and the awkward-yet-steady time keeping of Todd Trainer’s drums remain in top form. For what it’s worth, Albini’s guitar does seem to gain more grace as the years go on — just watch out for the ugly jazz fusion lick that ends “Canaveral.” Raw, no-frills production? Absence of overdubs? Goofy time signatures? They’re all a part of the cauldron. As with the band’s previous LPs, you get healthy doses of extended hypnotic doodling, rumbling mid-tempo tantrums, speedy jabs, and a joke or two. And as with any recording featuring the wordsmithery of Steve Albini, one fights the urge to transcribe the whole damn thing. Often humorous, occasionally unsettling, but always intelligent and thought-provoking, Albini’s lyrics are a bit nastier than the past couple records. “Prayer to God” is no plea for forgiveness or well-wishing; he asks his lord to kill an ex-girlfriend and her accomplice. “Canaveral” dreams of whisking an enemy to outer space, in hopes that he’ll become fertilizer. If you know the band’s sound, your mind was probably made up prior to reading this. You know what to expect, aside from it not being quite as fantastic as At Action Park, but certainly better than Terraform. True to Shellac form, the record is a sound purchase. Within the domain of atonal, anti-commercial rock & roll, very few are on their level. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi

23rd & Stout

After more than 30 years in the music biz, Chuck E. Weiss is still best known (a) as one of Tom Waits’ best friends, and (b) for being the subject of Rickie Lee Jones’ hit “Chuck E.’s in Love.” The latter distinction hasn’t done much for him lately, but he seems to be counting on the former to draw interest in his fourth album, 23rd & Stout. Most of 23rd & Stout sounds like some unreleased Tom Waits album that walks in a Twilight Zone between the Beefheart-influenced throb of Swordfishtrombones and the laid-back beatnik vibe of Blue Valentine. While it’s entirely possible that Waits has borrowed a bit of his buddy Weiss’ schtick over the years, there’s also little argument that Waits is far better at it, and it doesn’t help that Weiss’ band here (headlined by Tony Gilkyson on guitar and Don Heffington on drums) isn’t able to deliver the gloriously strange groove of Waits’ more recent work, though the group sounds great on the jazz-leaning material. When Weiss goes into a shaggy-dog story like the title cut or a lurching stomp such as “Prince Minsky’s Lament,” it’s all but impossible not to compare him to Waits, but in all fairness Weiss is a better than average songwriter, and when he lets his funny side take over (like he does on “Half Off at the Rebop Shop,” “Sho Is Cold,” or “Piccolo Pete”), he’s an enjoyable and absorbing performer. (His sly interpretation of “Primrose Lane” also suggests he could deliver a fine set of standards if he were so inclined.) Too much of 23rd & Stout makes Chuck E. Weiss sound like the Baja Marimba Band to Tom Waits’ Tijuana Brass, and the shame of that is he’s clearly talented enough establish a more distinctive creative identity by now, as the best moments of this album confirm. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

One of the enduring instrumental combinations for musical expression, whether jazz or classical, is the piano trio. The great jazz pianists from Teddy Wilson and Art Tatum through Bill Evans and Oscar Peterson to Brad Mehldau and Keith Jarrett have used this vehicle for their personal jazz expressions. With this offering, Seattle-based Dave Peck knocks on the door to be admitted to this exalted company. On the jazz scene as a performer, arranger, and composer for more than 25 years, Peck is no newcomer. His performing credentials include sideman assignments with such notables as Chet Baker, Sonny Stitt, Lee Konitz, and Art Farmer. He has worked with Bud Shank as arranger/composer since 1985. Peck’s approach to the piano falls somewhere between Bill Evans and Oscar Peterson, with some Thelonious Monk influence on Peck’s “If…Then….” Admittedly a wide gap, but plausible here. There’s that wonderful thoughtful lyricism that characterizes Evans’ work, but he adds a little more embellishment to his playing than the late master, nudging closer (not close) to Oscar Peterson. This respectable uniting of styles is apparent in a perceptive seven-and-a-half minute exploration of “Star Eyes,” where every aspect of this popular 1943 classic standard is probed, pushed, pulled, and prodded by Peck and his cohorts. And his cohorts are critical to the success of this session. Dean Hodges’ drums set the pace without ever becoming intrusive, staying with the traditional role of a drummer in a small group. Chuck Deardorf, on the other hand, gets ample opportunity to enliven the musical feast with his refreshing bass solos. He is especially telling on “If I Were a Bell” and on Monk’s “Eronel.” With a play list of jazz and classic standards, Brazilian rhythms, and originals by Peck, 3 and 1 is welcomed to the jazz piano trio literature with open arms. Recommended. [The unusual label moniker Let's Play Stella finds its derivation in a joke about the naming of Peck's dog, now...

The follow-up to the introductory package 1-3, 4 is the album that established the Norwegian quartet Supersilent as an up-and-coming free improv artist, drawing much attention from the magazine The Wire, especially. When all young artists were either drawn to lowercase or atmospheric experimental electro, the quartet dived into burning-hot free improvisation, blending jazz, rock, and electronica idioms with a distinctive Scandinavian touch -- something in the use of space and the field recordings that evokes the mountains, snow, and fjords of Norway. As usual, the tracks are numbered instead of titled as to obliterate any preconceptions. "4.1" begins atmospherically before the drummer starts rolling and pounding. But this introduction comes to an abrupt end and almost feels like a false start, a warm-up. "4.2" is also mostly atmospheric, but now the E-Bowed electric guitar is more prominently featured, along with treated voice samples. Drums escalate, synthesizers build tension, and the sonic battle has begun. An intentionally sloppier incarnation of Steamboat Switzerland could have recorded "4.3." The album's highlight resides in "4.6," a long improvisation with many twists, turns, and shifts in dynamics and moods. 4 shows Supersilent exploring an unheard-of fusion of free styles, sculpting their own niche. Recommended. ~ Fran? ois Couture, Rovi

Andrew W.K. has done a lot of unusual things in his career -- not everyone can have a Cartoon Network show and be a member of Current 93 (not to mention run a club, release an album of J-pop covers, and publish a book of advice) at the same time. Still, 55 Cadillac may be one of the most unique additions to his body of work: it's a collection of "spontaneous solo piano improvisations" -- or "SSPIs" as W.K. calls them -- inspired by his car. It's also, like most of his projects, kind of ridiculous and kind of amazing. He's completely committed to the concept, and he has the skills to pull it off. After all, W.K. is a classically trained pianist who began taking lessons at age four, and his keyboard chops added fizz to I Get Wet and Close Calls with Brick Walls and majestic heft to The Wolf. That prowess is the focus of this album; on his Steinway & Son Model D concert grand piano, Andrew W.K. weaves classical, jazz, rock, and experimental elements together with an accomplished ebb and flow from piece to piece and within each track. The fantastically named "Begin the Engine" (why merely start an engine when you can begin it?) is overtly classical-influenced, kicking off with the sound of crickets and a motor roaring to life before W.K.'s dazzling arpeggios and otherwise deft playing take over for nearly nine minutes. Shorter tracks like "Seeing the Car," which tosses hints of '50s-style rock into the mix, and the lunging, jazzy "Central Park Cruiser" are more immediate and nearly as impressive. Only a couple of moments on 55 Cadillac sound anything like Andrew W.K.'s previous albums: "Night Driver" ranges from atonal boogie-woogie to W.K. tapping on the piano's edge (which might be the piano equivalent of a drum solo) and has an anthemic quality that's fully realized by "Cadillac," which boasts drums and laser-guided guitars that bring the album to a satisfyingly over the top close. Fans of his louder music might not play this often, but 55 Cadillac i...

5X5 Rock Take Off 2 (Book and CD)

$14.2

In this second "5x5 Rock" play-along book, the focus is on the technique of playing two bass drums (double bass). This very special drum style has fascinated many drummers since its inception. Jazz musicians such as Louis Bellson or Buddy Rich became masters of the craft of playing two bass drums. Their skills inspired a whole generation of Rock drummers in the late 60s such as Ginger Baker (Cream) to copy their great Jazz heroes and rock music was greatly enriched by this innovative playing technique. Over the years, more and more drummers were attracted to his technique and their unique hammering beats created the foundation for new styles of Rock music. Examples are Mikkey Dee of Motorhead, Lars Ulrich (Metallica), Joey Jordison from the band Slipknot or Simon Phillips (TOTO). The songs on the CD are composed in the style of these bands so that now you have the unique opportunity of becoming a member of your favorite band! Five different tempos allow each student to learn the new technique and put it into action. It's not absolutely necessary that you work your way up to the fastest tempo.

A Charlie Brown Christmas

A Charlie Brown Christmas

$18.98

Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz called on pianist extraordinaire Vince Guaraldi and his trio to compose and perform music that would reflect the humor, charm, and innocence of Charlie Brown, Snoopy, and the entire Peanuts gang for their 1965 Christmas TV special. It was a perfect match: Guaraldi strings together elegant, enticing arrangements that reflect the spirit and mood of Schulz's work and introduce contemporary jazz to youngsters with grace, charm, and creativity. "What Child Is This" touches on cool jazz's richly textured percussive nuances, while "The Christmas Song" reflects Christmas' relaxing, mellow moments. The renowned "Linus and Lucy" gives the Peanuts characters a fresh, energetic feel with its tantalizing meter changes, brilliant percussion, and dashing, humorous piano lines. "Christmastime Is Here," perhaps the album's most endearing and eloquent moment, is six minutes of soft, lullaby-like melodic and percussive flavors. This collection of soul-soothing melodies would not be complete without the romantic gem "Skating," which blends musical references to falling snowflakes with the dashing feel of swing. Finally, the uplifting, emotionally stirring swing tune "Christmas Is Coming" really brings the listener into the joyous light of the Christmas spirit. Fred Marshall's alluring walking basslines and drummer Jerry Granelli's hauntingly beautiful brush work give most of the album a warm foundation, while Monty Budwig and Colin Bailey shine through with eminent dexterity on bass and drums on "Greensleeves." As for Guaraldi, his penetrating improvisational phrases paint pictures of the first winter snowfall, myriad glistening trees, and powdery white landscapes. With its blend of contemporary jazz and lyrical mannerisms, A Charlie Brown Christmas is a joyous and festive meditation for the holiday season. ~ Shawn Haney, Rovi

A Hot Night in Paris

A Hot Night in Paris

$29.98

In the latter half of the '90s, Phil Collins' career hit a bit of a sales slump, and instead of shamelessly chasing after another number one single, he decided to change pace and try something different. Returning to the drums, he assembled the Phil Collins Big Band, reviving the sound of such idols as Buddy Rich and Sonny Payne, but largely sticking with his original material. After a brief European tour in 1996 (which happened to feature Quincy Jones as conductor and Tony Bennett as vocalist), he created a new version of the band featuring several accomplished jazz and studio musicians in support -- notably alto saxophonist Gerald Albright, but also guitarist Daryl Stuermer, tenor saxophonist James Carter, and pianists George Duke and Brad Cole, among many others, in varying roles. That band toured America and Europe in 1998, and it's the one featured on the ten-song, 70-minute live album A Hot Night in Paris. Initially, it may be disarming for long-time fans (and detractors) to hear "Sussudio," "That's All," and "Against All Odds" blaring forth in brash, brassy arrangements, and it is true that the melodies can occasionally sound thin in this context, but once that first reaction passes, A Hot Night in Paris is actually entertaining. Collins doesn't try anything new with the big band form -- he just updates it with his own songs, including the Genesis chestnut "The Los Endos Suite," along with covers of Miles Davis' "Milestones" and the Average White Band's "Pick up the Pieces." As such, it's the sort of record that will inevitably irk purists, since it's targeted right at mainstream jazz audiences, ones that aren't really familiar with big band music but have a vague idea of what it sounds like, but anyone whose standards aren't quite as exacting will likely be pleasantly surprised with A Hot Night in Paris. When the band just plays -- which is quite often, since the themes are stated quickly enough so they're recognized, then they disappear -- th...

A Thousand Kisses Deep

A Thousand Kisses Deep

$12.99

Chris Botti's sixth album is a wonderfully, even perfectly crafted group of originals and covers that accent his deep crossover appeal as both a jazz and pop musician. Botti's phrasing is very keen, uncanny in the way it works with simple rhythmic structures, and his tone is rich and warm. His use of keyboards and drum loops is pretty much up to the minute in terms of its hip factor, and his arrangements appeal to serious jazz fans and are something akin to blessed-out ecstasy to smooth jazz aficionados. Therein also lies the problem. Botti hasn't significantly developed his sense of artifice since his debut album and, if anything, has delved deeper into its oh-so-cool bachelor pad faux elegance than ever on A Thousand Kisses Deep. The title track, a very moving song written by Leonard Cohen, is the finest moment on the disc. A spare guitar backdrop is adorned simply; Botti plays the melody in short, clipped staccato phrases for an entire full verse before the rhythm section enters. The effect is haunting, lushly romantic, and full of a sensual warmth that is as spooky as it is silky. The spare keyboards and brushed drums offer the song as something slightly Latin (thanks to the gorgeous guitar playing by Dean Parks). It could have been the love theme in Robert Rodriguez's Once Upon a Time in Mexico -- yes, it really does feel slightly mariachi! Burt Bacharach's "The Look of Love," despite a marvelous vocal by Chantal Kreviazuk, suffers from cute syndrome -- as does "The Last Three Minutes," another Bacharach tune. The straight pop stuff, such as "Ever Since We Met" with Bridget Benenate's breathy vocals, work very well. Botti's solo entwines the refrain and carries the singer's voice along into the ether. A duet with pianist Billy Childs on "My Funny Valentine" feels a tad stilted, but there is great tension resolution in the third chorus. "If I Could," another original, with the great Smokey Hormel on guitar in addition to Parks, is a true mood-setter...

Afreaka! [Bonus Tracks]

$24.98

DJs like Gilles Petersen have been hip to the seven-piece wonder band Demon Fuzz for years, and as of the 21st century — now that everybody’s put away their James Brown records for sampling — other club jocks are getting into the act of sampling this incredibly rare LP. Afreaka! was the only release by Demon Fuzz. Released in 1970, Afreaka! is a wild mash of Afro-Latin funk, breakbeats, tripped-out soul, jazz fusion, and psychedelic journeying. These seven black musicians took on everything that was happening, and were musicians enough to make it work for them. This CD reissue by Castle/Sanctuary includes the entire original album plus their three-track EP whose A-side was “I Put a Spell on You.” Yeah, there are vocals on this set, but they are far from a distraction. Imagine the early Santana band mashed hard on the mouth by Fela, Sly, and mid-’60s Blue Note soul-jazz — and having heard prog rock. Oh yeah…heavy, demented, and so out there that it’s timeless. Had they heard this when they did their mighty Root Down EP, the Beastie Boys would have released a very different record. Most tracks run in the eight- and nine-minute range and get down with tough drums at the core, with rhythmic shifts happening on a grooved dime. Killer horns, Hammond B-3s, electric guitars, and deep tough slinky funky bass all wind together to create a mix so utterly intoxicating and fluid that it’s difficult to take in one listen — check out the Eastern mode sax solo on “Another Country” or the stomp-and-slide greasiness of “Past Present and Future.” And as for the Screamin’ Jay Hawkins cover, it’s like the Meters jamming with Osibisa! There’s also a fine extended voodoolicious psych-soul cover of Ray Harris’ R&B classic “Mercy” (subtitled “Variation No. 1″). This is the real deal — solid, freaky-deaky, and groove-centric. Not to be missed. [The CD was also released with bonus tracks.] ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi

Where once they were three — Dave Samuels on vibes, Paquito D’Rivera on saxophone, and Andy Narell on steel drums — Caribbean Jazz Project has morphed over the past decade-plus into a big band of close to 20 members, 13 of them horn players. Samuels, who contributes marimba as well as vibes, remains at the helm, and it’s clearly his vehicle — he also wrote five of the nine tracks on this set. The band cooks, no question about it, and Samuels’ Latin-leaning arrangements are smart and steamy. But new material is in short supply, and the album ultimately has a sense of d? j? vu about it. Nearly all of the material, including covers of Thelonious Monk’s “Bemsha Swing,” Oliver Nelson’s “Stolen Moments,” and John Coltrane’s “Naima,” has appeared on previous CJP recordings, and even if Samuels felt a burning need to return to these songs to recast them as big-band numbers, he might have tried reworking them while he was at it — outside of the sheer volume of players involved, there’s simply not much going on here that adds a new dimension to the Caribbean Jazz Project story. That said, the quality of musicianship throughout the album is superb, and those unfamiliar with the previous releases will undoubtedly find it exhilarating. But those who’ve experienced the previous recordings and seek newness won’t find it here. ~ Jeff Tamarkin, Rovi

Alison Brown Quartet

Alison Brown Quartet

$11.99

Alison Brown, believe it or not, is a five-string banjo player. The rest of her quartet is a standard jazz ensemble consisting of piano, bass, and drums, and you can be confident that there’s nary a bluegrass lick anywhere on this album. Like her compadre B? la Fleck (to whom she must be absolutely sick of being compared), Brown figured out some time ago that the banjo is a fully chromatic instrument with every bit as much melodic flexibility as a guitar, and that its clear, crisp tone is perfectly suited to jazz. It works especially well as a bebop instrument, which Brown demonstrates on this album’s opening track, the rollicking, Charlie Parker-ish “G Bop.” It also works pretty well as a cool jazz instrument, which Brown demonstrates on the album’s second track, the loping, Bill Evans-ish “Red Balloon.” This sort of stylistic variety is grist for Brown’s mill, but it doesn’t always work in her favor: “My Favorite Marsha” (one of several tracks on which she switches to guitar) is nice but borders on new acoustic sappiness — her guitar playing is good but not exceptional. However, “Without Anastasia” draws nicely on classical influences without sounding pedantic, and “Banjo Mambo (Revisited)” is a very fun Latin romp. ~ Rick Anderson, Rovi

Anthony Braxton Ensemble concert at Carnegie Hall on 27 Jun 76

Anthony Braxton Ensemble concert at Carnegie Hall on 27 Jun 76

$9.98

Visionary composer and multi-reedist Anthony Braxton assembled a dream crew for his appearance at the 1976 Newport Jazz Festival. With Muhal Richard Abrams on piano, George Lewis on trombone, Dave Holland on bass, Barry Altschul on drums and the leader on everything from alto sax to sopranino sax to contrabass clarinet, this creative ensemble rolled out an eight-movement suite of provocative music (“Composition No. 70″) which he dedicated to Duke Ellington, who had passed away two years earlier. Employing a heavily theoretical approach to jazz, which has as much in common with 20th century classical composers as Karlheinz Stockhausen and Edgard Varese as it does with Duke, Braxton stunned this Carnegie Hall crowd with his highly idiosyncratic music. Movement “A” opens with a pensive trilling on the keys by Abrams, accompanied by ominous unisons from Braxton’s contrabass clarinet, Lewis’ trombone and Holland’s arco bass, while Altschul floats over the proceedings in rubato fashion with cymbal washes and well placed drum accents. In section “B,” Braxton switches to a buttery-toned alto sax and engages in some gentle exchanges with Holland, who smacks the strings with the woody part of his bow (a classical technique known as “col legno battuto”). The piece picks up in intensity with some rather spiky punctuations along the way, ultimately yielding to a whirlwind collective improvisation. “C” contains some dramatic stop-time phrases that cut the silence like a knife. Trombonist Lewis also engages in a freewheeling duet with drummer Altschul during this provocative section. Braxton’s virtuosic flights on clarinet rise above the fray on section “D” while Holland also stretches here with a strong pizzicato solo, underscored by Altschul’s supportive brushwork. Braxton fairly explodes on soprano sax in the middle of this tumultuous piece, which settles into a kind of chamber-like Zen near its conclusion. Section “E” opens with some gentle piano patterns by Abrams, support

Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers concert at Central Park on 07 Jul 73

Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers concert at Central Park on 07 Jul 73

$8.98

This Central Park performance opens with bandleader Blakey intoning, in his distinctively gruff voice, the presentation of a special plaque to his friend and colleague, Gene Krupa, a champion of the drums from his days with the Benny Goodman Orchestra in the 1930s. Following that brief ceremony, which includes an eloquent acceptance speech from Krupa, the 1973 edition of the Jazz Messengers launches into Cedar Walton’s aggressive “Plexus,” a 1961 composition originally written for Freddie Hubbard’s 1961 Blue Note album, Hub Cap. In the solo order Carter Jefferson goes first, unleashing a potent tenor solo over the percolating groove provided by Ray Mantilla’s conga, Mickey Bass’ insistently walking bass lines and Blakey’s irrepressible presence behind the kit, dropping ‘bombs’ on the bass drum while cutting up the beat on the snare in unpredictable ways as he keeps the ride cymbal pulse steady and swinging. Eddie Henderson follows with a bravura high-note trumpet solo that is coming directly out of Freddie Hubbard school of audacious virtuosity. Veteran Messenger Fuller follows with a mellower but no less swinging trombone solo. Stitt enters the fray with a brief tenor statement before pianist-composer Walton completes the succession of solos on this blazing opener. Curtis Fuller’s “Alamode” pits Carter Jefferson against Sonny Stitt in an exhilarating bit of one-upsmanship. As Blakey’s uncanny forward momentum and powerful accents on the kit propel this Messengers staple, Jefferson solos first with robust tones and wild abandon. Stitt follows on alto with Bird-like facility and an urge to burn. Henderson turns in another pyrotechnic trumpet solo that nearly bursts with intensity in the high range and Walton negotiates the changes with hard bop fervor on his impeccably swinging piano solo. Blakey and the Messengers close out their Wollman Ampitheater set with drumming legend Roy Haynes, who played with Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane, joining the c

Art Lande concert at Great American Music Hall on 13 May 76

Art Lande concert at Great American Music Hall on 13 May 76

$9.98

A native New Yorker (born February 5, 1947), Lande parlayed his classical studies and love of Bill Evans into a wholly unique piano voice. After studying at Williams College, he moved to San Francisco in 1969 and became something of a regional hero there through the ’70s. He recorded with saxophonist Jan Garbarek and trumpeter Ted Curson in 1973 before forming the Rubisa Patrol quartet with Mark Isham on trumpet, Bill Douglass on bass, and Glenn Cronkhite (later replaced by Kurt Wortmann) on drums. Their self-titled debut was released in 1976 on the ECM label. They followed with 1977′s Desert Marauders on ECM and over the next few years garnered something of a cult following in both Europe and the United States. After disbanding the Rubisa Patrol, Lande taught at The Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle in 1983 and the following year moved to Switzerland, where he taught for three years at a jazz school in St. Gallen. He returned to the States in 1987 and began teaching at Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado, where he still resides. Lande collaborated through the ’80s and ’90s with such creative artists as trumpeters Mark Isham and Ron Miles, multi-reed player Paul McCandless, saxophonist Fred Hess, guitarist Jerry Hahn and New Age pioneer George Winston. From 1988-1990 he collaborated on a children’s series for Windham Hill, creating music for 2 Bad Mice (with narration by Meryl Streep), 3 Little Pigs and 3 Billy Goat’s Gruff (with narration by Holly Hunter) and Goldilocks and the Three Bears and Little Red Riding Hood (with narration by Meg Ryan). He has also recorded several distinctive solo piano albums, including 1996′s Friday the Thirteenth, featuring 13 Thelonious Monk compositions. Lande continues to record as a leader and as a sideman. In 2005, he appeared on guitarist Nguyen Le’s Walking on the Tiger’s Tail and in 2010 on saxophonist Bruce Williamson’s Standard Transmission, a freewheeling project full of clever extrapolations on familiar pop and ja

Atomic Roooster [Expanded Deluxe Edition]

Atomic Roooster [Expanded Deluxe Edition]

$18.99

This 2004 reissue of the first Atomic Roooster LP bests all prior pressings — domestic and import alike — with flawless digital remastering, the resurrection of the original running order, as well as five significant bonus sides. The trio of Vince Crane (organ/vocals), Carl Palmer (drums), and eventually Nick Graham (vocals/bass) had formed out of the Crazy World of Arthur Brown, where both Crane and Palmer had played key roles on the chart-topping single “Fire.” As the former had been Arthur Brown’s musical director, it is fitting that he penned the vast majority of the Rooster’s initial outing. The songs reflect the author’s darker and at times fatalistic demeanor, most directly in the repetitive “What is the point of going on?” chorus that distinguishes the incongruously delicate folkie and pastoral “Winter,” or the sardonic sexual superiority of “And So to Bed.” These stylistically contrast the forceful “Friday 13th,” “S.L.Y.,” and “Before Tomorrow.” Equally divergent are the horn-driven “Broken Wings” and incendiary jazz fusion workout “Decline and Fall.” The latter is an interesting departure as it provides each musician an opportunity to interact with substantive fluidity. When Elektra Records added Atomic Rooster to its roster, Palmer had already flown the proverbial coop, replaced by Paul Hammond (drums), while John Cann (guitar/vocals) had taken Graham’s place. Such a considerable shift in personnel convinced the band to have Cann record guitar parts overtop of “S.L.Y.” and “Before Tomorrow,” as well as redo the lead vocal for “Friday 13th.” In North America the album was released with a completely different feel, which was undoubtedly as much a result of the reconfigured tune stack as it was the additions and/or subtractions. The 2004 edition of Atomic Roooster includes the U.S. version(s) of all three and two tunes from a rare BBC Radio appearance by the incipient incarnation performing “Friday 13th” and the not-yet-release…

Awakening

Awakening

$16.98

When jazz critic Peter Margasak interviewed Nicole Mitchell for the liner notes he wrote for Awakening, she explained: “I wanted to dig back into the old-school jazz a bit and yet still make room to branch out into never-never land.” And that is a perfect description of what the Chicago-based flutist/composer does on this 2011 date, which finds her leading a pianoless quartet that employs Jeff Parker on electric guitar, Harris Bankhead on upright bass and Avreeayl Ra on drums and percussion. Presumably, the “old-school jazz” that Mitchell is referring to is post-bop, while “the never-never land” is avant-garde jazz. Of course, avant-garde jazz comes in many different flavors. Avant-garde jazz can be totally outside (whether it is scorching, dense, brutally atonal free jazz or the spaciness of the AACM), or it can be avant-garde jazz with an inside/outside perspective–and Awakening, like previous Mitchell releases, has an inside/outside perspective. The material that Mitchell composed for Awakening is fairly melodic; “There,” “Momentum” and the bluesy “F.O.C.,” for example, offer appealing post-bop melodies. “Curly Top” even has a somewhat Horace Silver-ish funkiness. So no, this 64-minute CD is not an exercise in atonality; that isn’t the scenario at all. But at the same time, Mitchell and her colleagues don’t hesitate to venture into outside playing when they feel like it. They don’t venture far outside, but they do venture outside–and while Awakening is more inside than outside, the outside element is an attractive part of the equation. Mitchell, it should be noted, has favored different combinations of musicians on different albums; she is quite proficient when it comes to ensemble playing and arranging, but an intimate quartet format serves her equally well on Awakening. And once again, the Chicago resident excels as both a composer and a soloist. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi

Bad as Me [Deluxe Version]

Bad as Me [Deluxe Version]

$24.98

Bad as Me is Tom Waits’ first collection of new material in seven years. He and Kathleen Brennan — wife, co-songwriter, and production partner — have, at the latter’s insistence, come up with a tight-knit collection of short tunes, the longest is just over four minutes. This is a quick, insistent, and woolly aural road trip full of compelling stops and starts. While he’s kept his sonic experimentation — especially with percussion tracks — Waits has returned to blues, rockabilly, rhythm & blues, and jazz as source material. Instead of sprawl and squall, we get chug and choogle. For “Chicago” — via Clint Maedgen’s saxes, Keith Richards’ (who appears sporadically here) and Marc Ribot’s guitars, son Casey Waits’ drums, dad’s banjo, percussion and piano, and Charlie Musselwhite’s harmonica (he appears numerous times here, too) — we get a 21st century take on vintage R&B. Indeed, one can picture Big Joe Turner fronting this clattering rush of grit and groove, and this album is all about groove. Augie Meyers appears on Vox organ and Flea on bass to guide Waits’ tablas and vocals on “Raised Right Men,” a 12-bar stagger filled with delightful lyrical clich? s from an America that has passed on into myth — Waits does nothing to de-mystify this; he just makes it greasy and danceable. The slow, spooky “Talking at the Same Time” is still in blues form albeit with ska-styled horns to make things more exotic, as Waits waxes about the current state of economic affairs. He showcases history’s circular nature as he bridges our national narrative from 1929-1941, and up to the present day: “Well it? s hard times for some/For others it? s sweet/Someone makes money when there? s blood in the street…Well we bailed out all the millionaires/They got the fruit/We got the rind…” Rockabilly rears its head on “Get Lost,” with David Hidalgo strutting a solid ’50s guitar snarl above the horns. Dawn Harms’ violin and Patrick Warren’s keyboards add textural dimension to H…

Bags' Groove

Bags’ Groove

$40.98

There are a multitude of reasons why Bags’ Groove remains a cornerstone of the post-bop genre. Of course there will always be the lure of the urban myth surrounding the Christmas Eve 1954 session — featuring Thelonious Monk — which is documented on the two takes of the title track. There are obviously more tangible elements, such as Davis’ practically telepathic runs with Sonny Rollins (tenor sax). Or Horace Silver’s (piano) uncanny ability to provide a stream of chord progressions that supply a second inconspicuous lead without ever overpowering. Indeed, Davis’ choice of former Dizzy Gillespie Orchestra and concurrent Modern Jazz Quartet members Milt Jackson (vibes), Kenny Clarke (drums), and Percy Heath (bass) is obviously well-informed. This combo became synonymous with the ability to tastefully improvise and provide bluesy bop lines in varied settings. The up-tempo and Latin-infused syncopation featured during the opening of “Airegin” flows into lines and minor-chord phrasings that would reappear several years later throughout Davis’ Sketches of Spain epic. The fun and slightly maniacally toned “Oleo” features one of Heath’s most impressive displays on Bags’ Groove. His staccato accompaniment exhibits the effortless nature with which these jazz giants are able to incorporate round after round of solos onto the larger unit. Bags’ Groove belongs as a cornerstone of all jazz collections. Likewise, the neophyte as well as the seasoned jazz enthusiast will find much to discover and rediscover throughout the disc. The remastered CD includes both historic takes of “Bags’ Groove” as well as one additional rendering of the pop standard “But Not for Me.” ~ Lindsay Planer, Rovi

For release number six by his Circulasione Totale Orchestra, Norwegian free jazz sax master Frode Gjerstad opted for a solid three-CD set of live recordings (from 2008, says the press kit — no recording info is included with the album itself). If you have been looking for a decisive statement from this band, here it is: three discs, three sets, three decibel-heavy collective improvisations full of twists and turns, three times the magic. The Circulasione Totale Orchestra has always been about mixing it up between locals and international figures, and about passing the torch to the younger set — the experience and advice of the seasoned musicians, the fresh excitement and ideas of the up-and-comers, all that circulates freely among orchestra members. Or at least, that’s how CTO is designed. And judging from these three hours of recordings, it works. There are 15 musicians on the recordings, 13 at a time, and the cast is a stunning blend of major players from the American free jazz and European free improvisation scene. In the “seasoned improvisers” category we find, beside Gjerstad, drummer Louis-Moholo-Moholo (of Chris McGregor fame), American free jazz greats Bobby Bradford (trumpet) and Sabir Mateen (sax); Kevin Norton (vibes), once in Anthony Braxton’s standards and non-standards bands, and longtime William Parker collaborator Hamid Drake (drums). Among the younger and local players are Anders Hana (guitar, of MoHa! and Noxagt) and the killer rhythm section of Ingebrigt Haker Flaten and Paal Nilssen-Love (both of the Thing). Lasse Marhaug and John Hegre (Jazkamer) are handling noise, electronics, and live manipulation/mix duties, with more electronic input from Morten Johan Olsen (of MoHa! and Ultralyd). It could have been totally chaotic, and at some points (especially on discs one and three) it borders on a catastrophe, but the musicians are clearly listening intently to one another and are ready to bounce back and put the train back on its rails when ne…
