With 4th & Wall the twosome has expanded to a sextet with the addition of live bass, drums, percussion, and guitar, further swelled by a host of guest musicians, greatly extending WIG’s aural vistas and influences — which now span the musical spectrum from synth pop to classic rock, from new wave to techno. A Keith Richards-ish guitar lick enlivens the infectious “Get Up,” echoes of “Free Bird” soar in the finale of “Sofia,” the Soup Dragons’ spirit swirls around “Lost Children,” and Echo & the Bunnymen’s moody atmospheres pool around “To Die in LA” and “All My Friends.” On the irresistible “Solar Eyes,” the group juxtaposes bubbly synth pop against a lusher new romantic style and a four-on-the-floor disco beat, then stirs in spacy effects and a funky feel. Sadly, though, the set’s sequencing is a bit slack, occasionally making for jarring shifts in styles between tracks, which is a shame, because in reality 4th & Wall is actually a quite coherent album. Age of Impact $17.98 This is another of the supergroup combinations from the Magna Carta label and is the brainchild of Trent Gardner of Magellan. It features Terry Bozzio (Frank Zappa) on drums, Billy Sheehan (Talas) on bass, and the soloing of John Petrucci (Dream Theater). There are also several other guest musicians, such as Steve Howe (Yes) and James LaBrie (Dream Theater). It is one of the more intelligent and diverse progressive albums to emerge during the ’90s. Unlike its predecessors, Black Light Syndrome and Liquid Tension Experiment, this is more of a progressive rock (as opposed to metal) recording in the tradition of Jethro Tull and Genesis. Bozzio’s drumming adds a unique quality to the band, as do the diverse vocal stylings of each singer. It isn’t often that you get to hear a single body of work that features consistent music with different vocalists and musicians changing throughout. There is the obvious risk that the music would sound too pieced together; however, this is a homogenous effort. It’s a fairly large statement to say that the least interesting moments are Petrucci’s soloing, but this is the case. Although his work with Dream Theater has proven him to be a very capable guitarist, it was apparent on this recording that he’s shown all of his cards. Of the music here, “Fate Speaks” is just a tad too long; it features Magellan’s biggest weakness as a band, which is to repeat the same chorus too many times. On its own, it would probably be more impressive, but here, it is actually the weak link, as the other tunes are so impressive. “Fading Fast” features interesting vocals, sound effects and even a drum machine, which actually works in this setting. The transition into the core of the song is handled perfectly by Dali’s Dilemma vocalist Matt Bradley. James LaBrie handles the vocals on “No Returning,” which features a refreshing flute solo by Michael Bemesderfer and more over the top soloing by Petrucci. “Time Enough” is memorable mostly for D.C. While the soft approach is his and his band’s modus operandi, the subtle differences from recording to recording are, nonetheless, pronounced, Whereas On My Way to Absence was adorned with simple acoustic guitars and framed in everything from strings and piano, there were also some slow, light rock & roll tracks, where the band plugged in. Not so here on And Now That I’m in Your Shadow. Drums only appear on a couple of cuts, and electric guitars are almost entirely absent. Sound effects, big echo chambers, and reverb grace “Montesano,” and one or two other tracks, but mostly, it’s just Jurado with his acoustic guitar, a piano, and some strings. The feel is late night, on the edge of quiet, and full of pathos. Once upon a time he refrained from writing confessional material; his songs are drenched in it now, whether metaphorical or not. Jurado’s storytelling skills, however, have become more sophisticated and multi-dimensional than they were before. Check “Denton, Texas,” the title track, the solo acoustic “Shannon Rhodes,” and “Gas Station.” The slow country stroll of “There Goes Your Man,” and the drum machine-driven acoustic cut “What Were the Chances,” a duet with Jenna Conrad.
