Their smooth, heavy rhythms, melodic tunes, and wonderfully full and tight vocal harmonies made everything they recorded a treat to hear. Add to that David Hinds’ powerful lead vocals and their deeply political lyrics, and you have enough to make a case for them being right up there at the top among homegrown bands in Jamaica, too. There have been many collections of the group’s work, and while 20th Century Masters – Millennium Collection: The Best of Steel Pulse isn’t the most comprehensive study of the band’s career it does a fine job of recapping the highlights. The disc contains three songs from their first three albums on Mango/Island: 1978′s landmark Handsworth Revolution, 1979′s Tribute to the Martyrs, and 1980′s Reggae Fever. The songs are well chosen giving a sample of the band’s political side (“Handsworth Revolution,” “Ku Klux Klan,” and “Drug Squad”) and their poppier side (“Sound System” and the booming “Reggae Fever”). The collection continues with a song from their excellent True Democracy record cut for Elektra in 1981 (“Ravers”), then jumps to the band’s late-’80s/early-’90s work for MCA for two songs: “State of Emergency” and “Taxi Driver.” It also picks up the song they recorded for the soundtrack to Do the Right Thing in 1989, “Can’t Stand It.” These songs are a bit jarring, as they have almost nothing in common with the band’s early roots sound, instead being pop-reggae replete with banks of synths and programmed drums. The compilation CD A’s B’s & EP’s is a handy way of taking a tour of the group’s early sound, up through the middle of 1965, boiling down their singles, B-sides, and EP’s in excellent sound. It took the group a few tries to really master the art of making a strong album from start to finish, but — as we’re reminded here — their 45s were beyond reproach, exciting, bold, and daring, and all memorable. Hearing Hilton Valentine’s guitar crunching and chiming away on “I’m Crying,” or John Steel’s drums up close and personal on “Boom Boom,” supporting Eric Burdon’s voice and juxtaposed with Alan Price’s organ, is still a bracing experience 40 years later — and on this master, Valentine’s trip down the fret board and Price’s keyboard flourishes exude rippling energy and a bracing presence — even on cheap speakers, Steel’s snare is distinguishable from the rest of the rhythm section; and on “It’s My Life” you can practically hear the action on his kit. And this disc is also a good opportunity for low-level fans to discover obscurities such “I’m Gonna Change the World” which, with its ambitious lyric and form, sort of anticipates the later compositions that Burdon would cut, on his own and away from virtually all help. Afro Bop Alliance $18.98 Where once they were three — Dave Samuels on vibes, Paquito D’Rivera on saxophone, and Andy Narell on steel drums — Caribbean Jazz Project has morphed over the past decade-plus into a big band of close to 20 members, 13 of them horn players. Samuels, who contributes marimba as well as vibes, remains at the helm, and it’s clearly his vehicle — he also wrote five of the nine tracks on this set. The band cooks, no question about it, and Samuels’ Latin-leaning arrangements are smart and steamy. But new material is in short supply, and the album ultimately has a sense of d? j? vu about it. Nearly all of the material, including covers of Thelonious Monk’s “Bemsha Swing,” Oliver Nelson’s “Stolen Moments,” and John Coltrane’s “Naima,” has appeared on previous CJP recordings, and even if Samuels felt a burning need to return to these songs to recast them as big-band numbers, he might have tried reworking them while he was at it — outside of the sheer volume of players involved, there’s simply not much going on here that adds a new dimension to the Caribbean Jazz Project story. That said, the quality of musicianship throughout the album is superb, and those unfamiliar with the previous releases will undoubtedly find it exhilarating. Air Stereo $14.98 The Damnwells have concocted a sound somewhere between alternative country and alternative rock on Air Stereo, an odd combination of rough and tumble electric guitars and smooth harmony. Perhaps the band’s oddest trademark is its Eagles-style harmony on “Golden Days,” an element that adds a bit of pop sheen to the Damnwells’ sound. The arrangements are fairly straightforward, with guitar, bass, and drums covering the basics while lap steel and piano add a little something extra. Alex Dezen handles the lead vocals, and like a number of his peers, embodies the right mixture of white boy angst and sincerity on songs like “Sell the Lie.” At times, this rustic, anguished approach seems to run against the grain of the happier songs on the album like “I’ve Got You” and “Accidental Man,” and is likewise at odds with the pretty harmony. But the Damnwells, like many other alternative bands, never seem to stay happy for very long. The elliptical “Shiny Bruise” follows a morose tempo that says more than the actual lyrics: this is music to get depressed by. Occasionally, the group’s guitar work — as on “I’ve Got You” — attempts to break out, drawing from classic rock and creating temporary moments of transcendence.
