Drum Pattern Basics

One of the fundamentals of any hip-hop song is the drum pattern. Drum patterns are considered to be the backbone of any hip-hop song. Drum patterns may sound plain but they are actually where you start your hip-hop song. They give a hip-hop song a structure to follow throughout the entire song. Producing drum patterns is simple if you know what you are up to. Drum patterns, basically, come in two different variations: uncomplicated drum patterns and more complex drum patterns.

Simple patterns are also referred to as lunchroom beats. Examples of uncomplicated drum patterns are beating your feet on the ground or beating your hands on the table. Patterns like these can be repeated every 8, 16, 32, or 64 beats.

Complex patterns, conversely, are frequently not that easy to tap along with. Such patterns have advanced effects like delays, drops, and mutes that add to the listener’s anticipation.

The Ostinato: This can be done with a 4 kicks evenly spaced on a 16 beat grid followed by snares in beat 2 and 4. Then you add constant hi-hats on each bar.

The Rim. Add a rimshot every 6 16th note. This uncomplicated rim pattern repeats every three bars creating a complex rhythm.

The Toms. You can make a complex beat by adding a five-hit tom which will be repeated every 2.5 loops. This means it will play once every five bars.

Displacement. This is a simple process that can make a more complex rhythm if done right. Displacement is a process in which you move a part of your drum beat backwards or forwards in a precise number of divisions.

I just want to learn how to make your drums sound like it is Metallica's drumset. It sounds so perfect and mine sounds like too Jamaican.

It was composed and arranged in a cabin near a live volcano in Akan National Park in Hokkaido, Japan, then recorded at Michigan Central Station, the massive abandoned train station in Detroit, as well as at various homes in Portland, OR. Teaming once more with producer Chris Koltay, the trio of Miles Seaton, Seth Olinsky, and Dana Janssen are joined on select tracks by Vanderhoof on slide guitar, vocalist Ali Beletic, trumpeter Ed Sortman, and Japanese vanguard percussion legend Tatsuya Nakatani. Tribalistic drums, distorted lo-fi efx, a screaming lead guitar — that sounds a lot like the late Stuart Adamson’s from Skids — soaring organ, and a chorus of chanted vocals introduce “Silly Bears” and thus the album. They have been a myth since the very beginning, and a mystery to all but one another. C’est Com…Com…Compliqu? , issued in early 2009, was recorded by the studio incarnation of Faust: original members Jean Herv? Peron and Werner “Zappi” Diermaier along with Amaury Cambuzat of French vanguard rock outfit Ulan Bator. (There is also an expanded live version of the band with former Henry Cow reed and woodwind man Geoff Leigh, singer Lucianne Lassalle, British poet Zo? Skoulding, and members of Welsh experimentalist band Ectogram.) The album was recorded at the now legendary Electric Avenue Studio in Hamburg by Tobias Levin. The music on this set is much less anarchic than some previous Faust releases, but that doesn’t make it any less enjoyable or adventurous. Infrared Roses $17.98 The nearly hour-long instrumental interplay on Infrared Roses (1991) came from a variety of concert performance excerpts circa 1989 and 1990. The audio was reconfigured and combined into four distinct multi-movement suites — all of which were named by Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter. Opening the disc is the audience-participating “Crowd Sculpture,” setting the communal pre-show scene with a m? lange of sonic experiences starring the typical Grateful Dead parking lot denizens doing their respective thing. The roar of the expectant audience then leads into “Parallelogram” the first of several rhythm-intensive selections with Mickey Hart (trap drums/timbales/electronic percussion/toms/synthesizer) and Bill Kreutzmann (trap drums/beast/beam/electronic percussion/talking drum) at the helm. These excursions typically occurred during the second set and were followed by a few minutes of free-form exchanges from the band’s co-founders Jerry Garcia (guitar/electronic percussion/synthesizer), Phil Lesh (bass/synthesizer), and Bob Weir (guitar/midi guitar/synthesizer). Through July of 1990, Brent Mydland (keyboards/Midi keyboard/synthesizer) was the primary ivory tickler. After his untimely passing, Vince Welnick (synthesizer) and (for a brief time) Bruce Hornsby (piano/synthesizer) were Mydland’s replacements. Additionally, Bob Bralove — the CD’s producer and one of the Grateful Dead’s longtime audio engineers — is credited with electronic drumming.
