Circle of Rhythm – The Rising Popularity of Social Drumming

Social drumming refers to the activities of the participants gather together for the purpose of playing the drums and percussion instruments. Group sizes can range from gatherings of some people that probably hundreds of drummers all adding to the love of percussion. This social phenomenon is getting increasingly popular as people seek alternative forms of entertainment and social interaction. Drum circle cross all boundaries of culture, gender, age, and level of experience, so people are united by a common interest.

Round drums can take different forms depending on whether how they are structured. Anything from a free-for-all in a leader-facilitated structure may occur depending on the preferences of individual participants. Furthermore, Drum circles can accomplish various purposes such as team building, education, personal growth, health and wellness, entertainment, and spirituality, to name only some. Regardless of the forms and purposes, participants were rewarded with an enjoyable and uplifting experience.

One might ask why drum circles are becoming so popular. The answer lies in the significant social and even spiritual qualities of these types of gatherings. There's something intrinsically infectious about not only the social aspects of the group but also the music that results. Even people with no musical ability can participate. All are equal and all are important members of the group. People who just come to listen find themselves being drawn into chaos.

You can choose to join a group of drum for educational purposes, spiritual events, social interaction, or just plain fun. Whatever your particular reason, the diversity of groups will enable you to find one that suits your likes and needs. you do not have to be a drummer to join. you do not need any musical ability at all. All you need is a desire to have fun. If this sounds enticing, I encourage you to find a drum circle in your area and join this fast-growing social phenomenon.

So, I always wondered if you could create your own super band really … you want to choose? what kind of music would they play? and what would you call them? My super band would look something like this singer: I'm thinking Fabiola Gatti, Also maybe add Caroline Polachek backing vocals for Karen O and add to shouty bits. Mia also add for some unique pieces in the middle of the song lol. guitars: The guys from vampire weekend and synths Hockey: Andrew Vanwyngarden and Gaspard Auge drums, programmed by Hot Chip also bring Brendon Urie on piano songs for childbirth (If any) dependent heaven: Kevin Barnes, Yannis Philippakis, Noel Fielding would be the best music in the world and they all look amazing on stage! I'd call them "hipsters united" haha …

With over 1000 drum loops from 50 to 200 bpm, Submersible Music’s Jazz Drums is exactly what it says, the very heart and soul of jazz drumming. Whether it’s a slow ballad, sparsely sprinkled with drum hits, to fast-moving, fiery flams and rolls, the Jazz Drums sample library has the loops and performances you need for authentic jazz flavor. Picture a smoky jazz club on the wrong side of town. It’s 2am, and you’re one of the last ones left listening. You can hear the swish and swing of the brushes on snare, the accent of the kick, never the same, always unpredictable and yet in the right spot. The ride and the hi-hat strike up a rhythmic conversation, and it’s a pleasure to be listening in. NOTE: This Jazz Drums sample collection contains only audio loops. There are no MIDI grooves or drum kits included.

Art Lande concert at Great American Music Hall on 13 May 76

Art Lande concert at Great American Music Hall on 13 May 76

$9.98

A native New Yorker (born February 5, 1947), Lande parlayed his classical studies and love of Bill Evans into a wholly unique piano voice. After studying at Williams College, he moved to San Francisco in 1969 and became something of a regional hero there through the ’70s. He recorded with saxophonist Jan Garbarek and trumpeter Ted Curson in 1973 before forming the Rubisa Patrol quartet with Mark Isham on trumpet, Bill Douglass on bass, and Glenn Cronkhite (later replaced by Kurt Wortmann) on drums. Their self-titled debut was released in 1976 on the ECM label. They followed with 1977′s Desert Marauders on ECM and over the next few years garnered something of a cult following in both Europe and the United States. After disbanding the Rubisa Patrol, Lande taught at The Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle in 1983 and the following year moved to Switzerland, where he taught for three years at a jazz school in St. Gallen. He returned to the States in 1987 and began teaching at Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado, where he still resides. Lande collaborated through the ’80s and ’90s with such creative artists as trumpeters Mark Isham and Ron Miles, multi-reed player Paul McCandless, saxophonist Fred Hess, guitarist Jerry Hahn and New Age pioneer George Winston. From 1988-1990 he collaborated on a children’s series for Windham Hill, creating music for 2 Bad Mice (with narration by Meryl Streep), 3 Little Pigs and 3 Billy Goat’s Gruff (with narration by Holly Hunter) and Goldilocks and the Three Bears and Little Red Riding Hood (with narration by Meg Ryan). He has also recorded several distinctive solo piano albums, including 1996′s Friday the Thirteenth, featuring 13 Thelonious Monk compositions. Lande continues to record as a leader and as a sideman. In 2005, he appeared on guitarist Nguyen Le’s Walking on the Tiger’s Tail and in 2010 on saxophonist Bruce Williamson’s Standard Transmission, a freewheeling project full of clever extrapolations on familiar pop and ja

 Butterfly

Butterfly

$18.98

Fourteen years is a long time to spend with one label, especially for jazz and fusion groups. Azymuth celebrated 14 years with the United Kingdom’s Far Out label in 2008. Butterfly is their eight record for the imprint and their first new studio album in four years. The original trio — Jose Roberto Bertami (keyboards/vocals), Alex Malheiros (bass/guitars/vocals), and Ivan Conti (drums/percussion/vocals) — is still together after 35 years. Here jazz, funk, fusion, and elegant samba are woven together seamlessly. The disc was produced by the trio with David Brinkworth (Harmonic 33). “Butterfly,” the album opener, is a sultry, breezy cover of the classic Herbie Hancock track, originally on 1974′s Thrust. The elegant sound of gorgeously arranged strings (by Arthur Verocai no less), warm rolling Rhodes piano, Conti’s breaking drums that walk the line between lithe funk and samba, and a pronounced but languid bassline gradually and deliberately build the space, stopping at interludes to reinsert the sensuous mood in the melodic line. Certainly it’s an auspicious way to begin, but it’s only one of the many highlights on this set. Another follows immediately with the slippery “Os Cara La,” a slamming jazz-funk groove tune; Malheiros’ bassline is pure snap and pop, while Conti moves in counterpoint to his rhythmic statement, and Bertami’s layers of keyboards weave an alluring kaleidoscope of their own. “Meu Doce Amigo,” written by Malheiros, is an elegiac samba dedicated to his late son who passed in 2003. Ze Carlos guests on flute and entwines with the wordless vocals and the weave of acoustic guitars and hand and brushed drums. “Avioenda Rio Branco,” with its meld of Rhodes and B-3 atop the popping breaks by Conti also contains some tenor blowing by Carlos, all propelled by the trance-like dancefloor funk bass of Malheiros and topped off with a killer solo on the cuica and hand percussion. “New Dawn” is nearly a samba but it stays on this side of jazz with b…

That excursion altered his musical course for all time, leading Mann into a lifetime of bringing Brazilian, Cuban, African, and other world music influences into his pan-cultural jazz aesthetic. Mann’s Afro-Jazz Sextet kicks off its Saturday afternoon set with a lively rendition of Sonny Rollins’ “St. Thomas,” a calypso-flavored number given more of an Afro-Cuban treatment on the head, before shifting into the straight-ahead swinging section for Johnny Rae’s bop-fueled vibraphones solo. Ray Mantilla’s churning conga work and Rae’s clave pulse on the cowbell returns the piece to an Afro-Cuban groove before Mann solos over another 4/4 swing section, paced by Knobby Totah’s walking bass and Collins’ insistent ride cymbal work. Shifting nimbly back and forth between straight-ahead and Afro-Cuban, this concert opener deftly bridges both worlds. Bassist Totah also contributes a vibrant arco solo which is followed by a whirlwind jam by the percussive battery of Mantilla and Collins. For the entrancing 12/8 “Bedouin,” a piece from Mann’s African Suite of 1959, they introduce such exotic instruments as the marimba from Mozambique, Nigerian drums, Japanese flute, and “finger cymbals from Henry Adler’s” (a popular percussion store at the time in midtown Manhattan). African drumming master Michael Babatunde Olatunji, joins the group here on djembe drum while Rae mans the marimba and Mann blows on the high-pitched Japanese flute. Olatunji had the previous year released Drums of Passion, the first African album recorded in a United States studio. He later played at John Coltrane’s final live performance in Harlem on April 23, 1967, the same year he appeared at the Newport Jazz Festival with a 12-piece percussion orchestra. Olatunji would gain international celebrity as a world music amb

Jean-Luc Ponty concert at Avery Fisher Hall on 04 Jul 74

Jean-Luc Ponty concert at Avery Fisher Hall on 04 Jul 74

$5.98

At the time of this stirring solo performance at the 1974 Newport Jazz Festival, French violinist and jazz-rock pioneer Ponty was a newly initiated member of the Mahavishnu Orchestra, having recorded Apocalypse with the band and the London Symphony Orchestra in March of that year. His appearance at this July 4th Avery Fisher Hall concert was, as impresario George Wein put it, “an extra added attraction.” By this time, Ponty had already recorded several straight ahead albums as a leader, including 1967′s Sunday Walk (with European stars Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, Wolfgang Dauner on piano, and Daniel Humair on drums, and reissued Stateside on Prestige as Critic’s Choice), 1969′s Electric Connection, Canteloupe Island and Live at Donte’s, and 1970′s King Kong: Jean-Luc Ponty Plays The Music of Frank Zappa (all featuring George Duke on keyboards), and 1973′s modernist gem, Open Strings, his last studio recording in Europe before moving to the United States to join Zappa’s band. For this show, Ponty played unaccompanied, alternating between three violins, one an electric instrument that was fed through wah-wah and delay pedals. And while his three lengthy improvisations were unnamed, some of the soaring, swooping motifs and striking echo lines heard here would later manifest on his recordings as a leader. Shortly after this performance, Ponty would embark on a career as a bandleader in his own right, which kicked off with the January, 1975 release of Upon the Wings of Music, the first of several hard-hitting fusion offerings for the Atlantic label. Born to a family of classical musicians on September 29, 1942, in Avranches, France, Ponty was admitted to a prestigious conservatory in Paris at age 16 and two years later was hired by one of the major symphony orchestras, Concerts Lamoureux, where he remained for three years. While still a member of the orchestra, he played clarinet on the side with a college jazz band that regularly performed at local parties

Save Me, San Francisco [Golden Gate Edition]

Save Me, San Francisco [Golden Gate Edition]

$14.99

San Francisco’s Train hit the charts with a bang early in the 21st century with hits like “Calling All Angels” and “Drops of Jupiter.” Save Me, San Francisco took four years to make, four studios in the United States and England, songwriting collaborators, and even a handful of producers, though Martin Terefe gets final credit. Save Me, San Francisco is a very focused record, centering around the theme of a wandering young rocker who falls in love and wants to settle down. The title track opens with an acoustic guitar playing a variation on the classic I-IV-V progression, a snare kicks in, and Pat Monahan’s vocal evokes prime Bob Seger in its confessional style. A piano and electric guitars enter on “whooo-hooo-hooo” chorus, and it’s near-perfect radio rock. That said, the single “Hey Soul Sister,” a love song with the best anthemic Train chorus to date, is the album’s most memorable cut, name-checking Mr. Mister and employing a Madonna metaphor — crediting her in the process. Acoustic guitars, kick drums, tom-toms, mandolins, and a B-3 underscoring Monahan’s emotive lyrics and melody make it literally unforgettable. “I Got You” samples the Doobie Brothers’ “Black Water” as an intro, and then further uses its chorus with a faux-reggae backbeat. It’s a high-gloss, big-production pop number. There are a couple of Monahan’s signature ballads here, too: the conflict-laden “This Ain’t Goodbye,” arranged with strings, and “Words,” with its undying profession of standing in the eye of the storm to protect the protagonist’s beloved. “Brick by Brick,” with its swelling refrain, has a lyric that promises the moon and tries to deliver it in the processional 4/4 time that underscores all of Train’s power ballads. The album concludes with “Marry Me,” in which Monahan sings nearly prayerfully, accompanied only by an acoustic guitar, flute, and muted percussion. Save Me, San Francisco is a love song to the band’s hometown. Their loyal fan base will no doub…

Although the Scandinavian countries have been dominating death metal and black metal for a long time, one shouldn’t forget that many of the early death metal bands came out of the United States — and one of North America’s extreme metal pioneers was Erik Rutan, who was playing death metal and grindcore in the band Ripping Corpse as early as 1987 and continued in that vein in the ’90s and 2000s with Hate Eternal — all of which in addition to his contributions to Morbid Angel. Hate Eternal have had their share of lineup changes since the band’s formation in 1997 (which is certainly not unusual for a death metal/grindcore combo), and on Fury and Flames, the outfit unveils a new lineup consisting of Rutan on lead vocals and guitar, Shaune Kelley (another ex-member of Ripping Corpse) on guitar, Alex Webster (known for his contributions to Cannibal Corpse) on bass, and Jade Simonetto on drums. Of the four, Rutan is the only one who was part of Hate Eternal’s original lineup, but all those personnel changes haven’t changed their sound. Rutan, after all, is the brains behind Hate Eternal; the band has always been the brainchild of Rutan, who is known for liking his metal bombastic, harsh, dense, and ultra-fast. That has been Rutan’s mindset since the Ripping Corpse days, and he maintains his unapologetic viciousness on Fury and Flames. With this early-2007 recording, Hate Eternal provide yet another dose of unforgiving, head-crushing bombast that is usually delivered at breakneck speed. Nothing groundbreaking occurs, and anyone who expects a lot of nuance and melody from death metal should stick to bands like In Flames and At the Gates. But the songs on this album are well executed (never let it be said that Hate Eternal lack chops). And despite the obvious limitations of this approach, Rutan’s longtime fans will find Fury and Flames to be a decent, if predictable, exercise in sensory assault for the sake of sensory assault. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi
