Asian American Arts Practice

Introduction

The essay will examine the contributions made by two Asian American artists; Francis Wong and Jon Jang. The latter is a modern day pianist while Wong was a saxophonist. Jon Jang's contribution to the Asian American Arts Practice

Before one can analyze Jang's contribution, it is necessary to understand its background, it facilitates an assessment of its influence. Jang began her musical journey a year before he turned 20. At that time, he was trying to familiarize himself with basic piano skills. Shortly after, he joined a music school called Oberlin conservatory where He sharpened his skills at the piano and learned how to compose songs. artist completed his studies after three years and received a degree in music. Jang has not only done some practical work in music, he also served as an instructor. He went back to his former Conservatory to provide consultancy services. Also, the artist has guided young students at the University of California. He taught most of them about the contributions made by Asian American artists.

There is no doubt that Jang still holds to its roots because he lives in an area quite close to China town. Furthermore, she took her daughter to an alternative school that allows the Chinese language immersion. (Jon Jang, 2002)

Contributions made by Francis Wong at the Asian American Arts practice

Francis Wong is one of the most contemporary instrumental artists in the current musical landscape. Wong is a saxophonist and a composer too. He is the leader of his band. Moreover, the artist has also engaged in some non-musical performed by founding the Asian Improvarts. He was quite instrumental in introducing Asian folk songs from the classical music scene. There are various contributions made by Francis Hwang on Asian American artistic experience over the last decade. For example, he has done some collaborations with the previously mentioned artists, Jon Jang. One of the songs he has Jang was called 'Are you Chinese'. Besides this, Wong has recorded 18 other musical pieces with a few notable personalities such as Glenn Horiuchi, Fred Ho and Wong's a band, the Great Wall. He also has developed a composer's workshop made up of eight members. As if this were not enough, there is also another band called the light-it is composed of three members owe it all sa Wong's efforts.

The most notable feature about Wong's contribution to Asian American practice is the fact that he is quite fond of mixing Jazz in Chinese traditional music called taiko, taiko which necessarily mean drum beats. Wong also uses a variety of Chinese traditional instruments music. However, Wang has also incorporated other American influences in his work. For example, he places a lot of importance on sax which is largely an American feature. He drew influences from American artists like David Murray, Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane. All performers eventually happen to African American and is a similarity he shares with counterpart Jon Jang. Part of the reason why his music is contemporary can be considered for the style he got from Coltrane. However, there are also other various American artists inspired Wong. They include Jim Pepper who happens to play the same instrument that Wong is but the will of American Persian origin. As mentioned earlier, Wong has done a lot of work outside the circle of music, most of them are related to Asian American art. For example, he has worked with a known performer and poet Genny Lim. To add to the diversity his work, has collaborated with Sachiko Wong Nakamura who specializes in choreography. Furthermore, several artists such as the World roster of Tales and a Mime troupe in San Francisco have also contributed to this artist's accomplishments and collaborations. Francis Wong is a role model as she has received awards from a residency program. Also, he is recognized by the Rockefeller foundation as a leader for the next generation. Among them, he was also awarded a grant of an Asian Cultural Center in Oakland. The latter award will allow enthusiasts to meet some of the artists and composers of modern day Asian American music. Jazz music is one of the most unique American style. It originated from black Americans back to the 19th Century. However, when one examines the whole genre, they realize that there are also other influences from places like Africa and Europe. On top of this, the last two decades have seen the emergence of Asian American influences Jazz music. The contribution made by an artist like Francis Wong has enriched this genre by Asian traditions and expressions. (Bay Area Improvisers Network 2007)

Wong as one of the last mentioned artists will display their diversity and unity by the type of instruments used. Besides this, he has tried fusing instrument innovation. But the most outstanding feature about Wong is the fact that he tries to express its current political, cultural and personal perspectives by its style. The artist takes pride in the fact that he has a mixed heritage and therefore are quite willing to show it. But despite all these influences, one must not forget that like most artists use jazz or instrumental music to express their personal ideologies. This issue has caused a lot of innovations as one of the main platform for expression for Wong.

Conclusion

One can not underestimate the influence put forward by the latter two mentioned in the Asian American artist art training. The first artist will be discussed Jon Jang. artist that it will participate in music and not music events have shaped the Asian American musical landscape. For example, he highlighted the forgotten past of China town. He has also fused some Chinese folk songs in his compositions. The other artists discussed in the essay is Francis Wong. He is a saxophonist who also drawn many influences from African American Jazz and other types of American jaz. However, he forged his own style by introducing so-called taiko drum beats. These are distinctly Chinese. Also, the type Musical Instrument he uses shows that he has a mixed heritage since he mostly plays the saxophone which features an American.

Wong's musical accomplishment again depicted in Asian societies he formed and the band he created. He also received honors for her efforts made by Asian Americans Rockefeller music from wards and others. The artist has tried using his music to bring social and political perspectives prevailing in his time.

The latter two artists both have different ideologies and styles. However, there are two distinct similarities between them. First of all, they are both fuse Asian and American influences in the process of change. Secondly, they use their music to express their own ideologies and principles.
