Carving Out A New Man Cave
For any man who’s either moving into a new home or is living in a home where some space has become available, knowing how to go about setting up a man cave can be a good skill to have. Maybe the movers haven’t brought the first box, but it’s for sure that the man of the house is going to stake out his own little piece of heaven consisting of a big screen TV and a home theater, hopefully.
This can really be the case when one looks at the typical household today, which usually consists of a wife and at least two kids. It can quickly become evident that there probably won’t be too many places in the house that a man will be able to call his own personal space. This isn’t to complain about the situation but rather to point out the need for a little space on occasion for the man of the house.
And even if there wasn’t something like a cave before maybe the kids have finally moved out and gone to college or are out on their own and discovering how hard it is to get up on time and go to work, for example. Maybe there’s now a room that will make for a good cave. It might be full of stuff right now — for example, who needs four home space heaters? — But it will soon become the cave of a man’s dreams.
There may even be some nice space out in the garage that the boy and his former band used to play in. They walled off a nice room and they put carpeting down, so half the job is done. Just move that old Epiphone electric guitar out of the way, or hang it up on the wall, and then get cracking on lining up a really nice TV set, at minimum.

For one, there’s got to be at least one really nice lounge chair or even a theater chair if someone has the money for that kind of stuff. Also, the television needs to be at least 44 inches in size, although TVs in the 50 range are much better.

Maybe even a nice little refrigerator for drinks and a popcorn maker or some other sort of movie theater-specific piece of gear. If money’s needed to fund all of this extravagance, hold a garage sale and unload that alpine skiing equipment that was used a single time several years ago.
No man, if pressed, would ever say that he’s anything but focused on his family and that a cave is nothing more than a place where he can find some temporary respite. There’s nothing wrong with that, and it’s better that he spends his Sundays in there watching the football game than actually out there trying to recapture his lost youth by maybe playing it, right?

ok iam really a bassist but,,, for about 6 you. I was fiddling around with electric guitars?
and iam loving every minute of it,,,, I recently bought a few cheap electric what "samick / vally art" electric (start style) guitar,,,, my surprise the guitar / pickups play well! I say this because I also have an american fender start,,,, any way,,, iam interested in "hot rodding" The samick guitar, so I bought a used "Duncan semore" hot rails "for the bridge p / u that I hope to have a tech install for to me anyway, the original p / us are ok but when I position the 5-way switch in the 2nd and 3rd position or middle position I get the sweetest sounds clear (mostly country "Tele" chime) better than fender start ,!!??,, go figure,,, any way how to preserve that same tone with the new hotrail installed? or is not in the tone has changed, or has everything changed?? If the new bridge p / u is wired to the 5th position of the 5-way, then you should get the same sound of the positions 2 and 3. (I'm calling on the neck and bridge position 1 position 5). That's what the 5-way I do – allow them Start a sort-of sounds like a Tele. I got the same thing at home. 12 Crass Songs $15.98 While in the minds of many punk rock was supposed to be about upending the rules and assumptions that had come to govern rock & roll in the mid-’70s, punk also helped revive the ranting spirit that had informed the best political music and art through the 20th century, from the Situationalists to the Fugs. Among the first wave of British punks, none ranted with greater ferocity and sense of purpose than Crass, who actually were the anarchist firebrands the Sex Pistols pretended to be, though the brutal report of their music was rarely as impressive or as intelligent as their lyrics. Crass were massively influential during their 1977-1984 lifespan and beyond, both as musicians and as activists, and Jeffrey Lewis’ 12 Crass Songs is a surprising example of just how far their ideas have reached. Best known for his witty anti-folk tunes, musician and cartoonist Lewis first heard Crass while he was a college freshman in 1993, and the blunt wit and angry idealism of their songs made a powerful impression on him. As he began performing, Lewis began looking for ways to merge the fury of Crass’ broadsides with his acoustic-based music and he recorded some lo-fi interpretations of some of their tunes in his bedroom. A few years later, Lewis’ efforts have grown into 12 Crass Songs, in which Lewis and a handful of friends (most notably vocalist Helen Schreiner) have taken a dozen tunes by Crass and married them to arrangements that give them a far more melodic spin than they revealed in their original form. While electric guitars pop up here and there (and take center stage on “Big A, Little A”), most of 12 Crass Songs is dominated by acoustic guitar and Lewis’ sweet, slightly nasal vocals, but while he has succeeded in making these songs sound pretty and playful in a way they never were before, he’s also managed to carry forth their message with a surprising accuracy. Casting Shadows $13.98 With their feet planted in the ’60s and their heads swimming in the clouds, the Black Hollies offer up a second batch of vintage rock & roll with Casting Shadows. These ten tracks will sound familiar to anyone who picked up the band’s Crimson Reflections debut — or, for that matter, anyone familiar with the gritty psychedelia of the Seeds, the Standells, or any act that might’ve played the Electric Circus in 1968. And while fuzzy guitar riffs and vintage tube amps have become customary accessories for many 21st century bands, the Black Hollies sound tighter, grittier, and altogether trippier than most of their retro-minded peers. Casting Shadows doesn’t just borrow from the counterculture era — it lives it, from the “holy moly, I’m so stoned!” cover art to the smart packaging (which borrows its ideas from old vinyl records) to the songs themselves. Tracks like “Bruised Tangerines,” “Hamilton Park Ballerina,” and “The Autumn Chateau” are every bit as kaleidoscopic as their titles suggest, with guitar tremolos and Farfisa organs sharing space alongside the occasional sitar and harmonica. If Casting Shadows aims to be the musical equivalent of an acid trip, then frontman Justin Angelo Morey is the group’s Timothy Leary, leading his three bandmates through blues rave-ups (“That Little Girl”), swampy rock (“Running Through Your Mind,” a close relative to Them’s “Baby, Please Don’t Go”), and all the psychedelic stops in between. Of course, not everyone will love the Black Hollies’ dedication to an era that is possibly older than the band members themselves, and Casting Shadows could very well be criticized as lacking any sort of forward-thinking, modern sensibility. Died in the Wool (Manafon Variations) $16.98 David Sylvian’s MANAFON (2009) appeared as a collection of disciplined art songs that relied on his collaborators to inform not only their textures, but their forms. Those players — Jan Bang, Evan Parker, John Tilbury, Dai Fujikura, Erik Honor? , Otoma Yoshide, and Christian Fennesz among them — created airy, often gently dissonant structures for Sylvian’s lyrics and melodic ideas. Died in the Wool (MANAFON Variations) re-employs these players (with some new ones) in the considerable reworking of five of MANAFON’s compositions. There are also six new songs that include unused outtakes, and two poems by Emily Dickinson set to music and sung by Sylvian. The new music here relies heavily on Sylvian’s association with Fujikura: he composed, arranged, and conducted chamber strings that are prevalent. Where MANAFON’s “Small Metal Gods” was orchestrated by acoustic guitar, laptop, electronics, bass, and cello, this one employs a string quartet that provides greatly expanded harmonics, which underscore the desolate power in Sylvian’s lyrics. On “Snow White in Appalachia,” strings shift the tune’s original sonic gears into diffused, vaporous sonorities. On the title track, Fujikura uses a composed clarinet sample to introduce John Butcher’s saxophone, a mixing board, an all-but-unrecognizable guitar, cymbals, and samples to stretch a narrative melody to its ghostly breaking point. Dickinson’s poem, “I Should Not Dare,” is a standout; its gentle, accessible melody, accompanied by Sylvian’s acoustic guitar, is made sharper by Fennesz’s electric and samples from Honor? . Parker adds a gorgeous nocturnal saxophone line and Bang provides an unusual string arrangement to create the feeling of deep longing across great distance. “A Certain Slant of Light,” also by Dickinson, is less formal but more moodily cinematic with its layers of samples. Their Friday afternoon set kicks off in exuberant fashion with the frisky "See Here, Svengali," a previously unrecorded Mulligan original that carries some churchy references in the tambourine shaking and the infectiously driving rhythm. Tom Scott contributes a burning soprano sax solo on this energized opener, and Jon Faddis kicks in a high-note trumpet solo to elevate the proceedings while Mulligan layers his sinuous, bop-infused baritone lines over the top. Next up is the funky vamp "One to Ten in Ohio," which features some earthly bari blowing by the leader and some urgent tenor wailing by Scott. Other stellar solos on this slow grooving jam are turned in by Brookmeyer on trombone, Frank Wess on alto sax and Joe Newman on trumpet. Guitarist Sam Brown steps out on "K4 Pacific," a driving number inspired by and named after a Pennsylvania R.R. steam engine locomotive that used to run by Mulligan's house in Ohio, during his childhood. Jefferson Airplane Handbill from Fillmore East on 03 May 68: 4 3/8 x 6 3/4 $0 May, 1968 was the best of times and the worst of times. The Fillmore East was the de facto East Coast home of not-the-Lennon Sisters psychedelic rock, anti-Viet Nam sentiment ran high in the intelligentsia, and Columbia University was home to intelligentsia nascent and established, real and faux. Jefferson Airplane and the beautiful Grace Slick, darlings of the experimental set, were booked at the Fillmore East in early May. David Byrd took the design idea for his modern interpretation of an Egyptian frieze from an art class assignment at Carnegie Tech, and he gave Slick an electric guitar in lieu of a lute. Slick didn’t play guitar, but the artist thought, “… It looked nice so I gave her one.” By April, 1968, deep-thinking students and academics at Columbia had proceeded precipitously from dissatisfaction with race relations, the war machine and other issues to classroom occupation. Student radio station WKCR valiantly reported the inner workings and thoughts of the occupiers, using the network of underground tunnels to scoop the major networks. The strike and the station’s handling of it would mark the turn in WKCR’s programming from college-life and courses to community, world-vision outreach. The back of FME006 notes a relationship between the band, the times and the University. It’s hard to know if the marketing ploy worked: did the station give away tickets? Was the promo even announced? The handbill is quite rare, its provenance from Bill Graham’s Fillmore East concerts impeccable, and it notes a period in modern American history and music when Left was Right, one could be righteous and relaxed at the same time and disagreement was still rather civil. |

Peddlin’ Dreams $16.98 Peddlin’ Dreams is Maria McKee’s fifth studio outing since 1989. Since leaving Lone Justice in 1988, she has consistently frustrated her fans’ expectations, not only for her infrequent recordings, but also for her restless muse that has taken her from pop (Maria McKee) to roots Americana and R&B (You Gotta Sin to Get Saved), squalling art rock (Life Is Sweet) and textured neo- psychedelia (High Dive). There was a live album issued in 2004 as well, but for the most part, McKee has stubbornly followed her own path for the past 16 years. While her label touts Peddlin’ Dreams as a return to rootsy American rock and folk styles, and as the album that logistically follows You Gotta Sin. Simply put; this isn’t true. This is not a look back but a further look in. It’s true that acoustic guitars permeate this mix by producer, engineer and multi-instrumentalist Jim Akin, and the songs walk the folk-rock border, but they are the frame for the rich, labyrinthine, multidimensional songs here. McKee wrote or co-wrote nine of the album’s 12 tracks. Using folk, country and rock backdrops, McKee’s songs offer stories of the broken, the lost, the wider-eyed and the hopeless. There’s the confessional longing of the protagonist in “Season of the Fair” where memory, evoked by emptiness and rejection, wraps itself in the warm embrace of strummed, unplugged six-strings and lets itself fall framed by an organ, a lone electric guitar punching through the refrain, and the singer’s voice, trying hard to hold what is not only fleeting but weighted in unrelenting pain. The loose, slippery country-rock of “Sullen Sou,” alternates between the balance of guitars and just behind the beat drums as the singer lets the depth of her emotion flow in images from her mouth like raw honey. The cover of Neil Young’s “Barstool Blues,” is faithful, shambolic, and drunken. But McKee’s delivery carries an emotional weight that Young’s never did.
