Turn off the lights, Teddy
R&B singer Teddy Pendergrass dead at 59
Sadly it came as no surprise, but soul and R&B lovers everywhere still mourn the loss of legendary Philadelphia singer Teddy Pendergrass. He died in a hometown hospital after a long battle with illness. Pendergrass was 59 years old. May he rest in peace, and may his family find some respite from their grief during these difficult times.
Famous for songs like Turn off the Lights and Love TKO
Not only that, but from 1994-1999, NCAA mens basketball fans know him as the singer of the championship song One Shining Moment.” According to CNN, the details on Teddy Pendergrass’ illness haven’t been revealed. They have only revealed that it was related to complications from a 1982 car accident. The accident paralyzed him, and he spent the rest of his life in a wheelchair.
His publicist said, His beloved family surrounded him. The world has lost a great voice and performer. Pendergrass is survived by three children, as well as extended family.
From Cadillacs to Blue Notes to Solo Greatness
Teddy Pendergrass began his music career with the Cadillacs in the late 1960s. The group later merged with Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes. Pendergrass started out as a drummer, but soon his big baritone voice couldnt be contained behind the drum kit. Songs such as “If You Don’t Know Me By Now,” a Number One hit, gave him the momentum to begin a solo career. Numerous nominations for a Grammy, Billboard, and American Music Award wins came soon after. After his tragic 1982 car accident, Pendergrass returned to the music studio a mere two years later to record an album. Before he passed away, he was working on a musical about his life called I Am Who I Am.
As a tribute, make One Shining Moment his
Im sure there may be some contractual obligations at work here, but I think it would be a nice gesture on the part of CBS NCAA Basketball coverage if they made the Teddy Pendergrass version of One Shining Moment the permanent rendition played after the NCAA Mens Championship game. Greg Gumbel probably wouldn’t complain. If he’s still due some money, buy him out by all means. If it puts you back, you could try using payday loans.

Thanks!

Solos & Duets $15.99 Personnel includes: Barbara Sutton Curtis, Ralph Sutton (piano), Reggie Johnson (bass), Jake Hanna (drums).Recorded 1988-1991.Recorded in Toronto’s Caf? de Copains in 1988-1989 and at the Kurtheater in Baden, Switzerland in November 1991, Solos & Duets is arguably the best album ever realized by pianist Barbara Sutton-Curtis. But let’s not argue — this is a superb collection of 14 jazz piano essays performed solo and in duet with big brother Ralph Sutton backed by bassist Reggie Johnson and drummer Jake Hanna. Both Suttons specialized in the Fats Waller book. Five delectable Waller tunes, including the rare and seldom heard “Oriental Tones” and “Why Am I Alone,” are bundled with such attractive melodies as James P. Johnson’s “A-Flat Dream,” Jay McShann’s “Hootie Blues,” Bix Beiderbecke’s “Davenport Blues,” W.C. Handy’s “St. Louis Blues,” and Joe Greene’s “Don’t Let the Sun Catch You Crying.” In terms of song selection and interpretive brilliance, this is a major triumph for the Suttons and for jazz in general. Tracks one, two, and nine-fourteen will prove especially satisfying as examples of traditional jazz played on a B?sendorfer piano. ~ arwulf arwulf |

Circle in the Round $23.98 Although this two-disc set is a compilation — primarily consisting of extended outtakes — Circle in the Round features the true colors of jazz chameleon Miles Davis (trumpet) during a 15-year (1955-1970) span from eight different recording sessions. Whether it was serendipity or astute coordination that gathered these sides together, Davis enthusiasts will undoubtedly find plenty to enjoy from his prolific and seemingly perpetual metamorphosis. The sessions are presented chronologically for the most part, beginning with a composite of “Two Bass Hit.” This version is from an October 1955 Kind of Blue session featuring John Coltrane (tenor sax) and a band Davis refers to as “the trio”: Red Garland (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Philly Joe Jones (drums). From the May 1958 recording date comes another major session featuring an all-star lineup: Julian “Cannonball” Adderley (alto sax), Coltrane (tenor sax), Bill Evans (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Jimmy Cobb (drums). Their single take on Cole Porter’s “Love for Sale” is an amazing performance that allows for some intensely cool solos from Miles and Adderley in particular. Listen as well for some tasty piano fills from Evans, as this is the sort of interaction that he’d become synonymous with. Although “Blues No. 2″ is taken from the final session at which Davis and Coltrane would record together, studio documentation reveals that Coltrane did not perform on this piece. The title track appears in an unedited form on the Miles Davis Quintet, 1965-68: The Complete Columbia Studio box set. It is a heavily Eastern-influenced freebop work featuring Davis — who is also credited with performing on chimes during this session — with his famous late-’60s quintet, featuring Wayne Shorter (tenor sax), Herbie Hancock (celeste), Ron Carter (bass), and Tony Williams (drums), as well as Joe Beck (guitar). Two early-1968 sessions featuring George Benson (guitar) with the previously mentioned quintet make up the b… |

Dave Brubeck Quartet concert at Newport Jazz Festival on 04 Jul 64 $5.98 A legendary, revered figure in jazz, pianist-composer Dave Brubeck has always been a reliable draw for George Wein over the past 55 years at the Newport Jazz Festival. In fact, his recent appearance at the 2009 festival, at age 90, was as highly anticipated an event as Brubeck’s first appearance at Newport back in 1954. Brubeck’s performance at the 1964 festival with his regular quartet featuring longtime right-hand man Paul Desmond on alto sax, Eugene Wright on bass, and Joe Morello on drums was typically swinging, imbued with intricate counterpoint and polyrhythms and marked by signature odd time signatures, as on his classic “Blue Rondo a la Turk” (9/8) and “Unsquare Dance” (7/4) and Desmond’s most famous composition, “Take Five” (5/4). Their appearance at the ’64 Newport Jazz Festival came on the heels of a 10-day tour of Japan, which inspired Brubeck to write some new material, some of which was premiered during this Fourth of July set. They open with a bluesy sketch which would later be more fully developed as “Osaka Blues” on 1964′s Jazz Impressions of Japan (one of the lesser known gems in Brubeck’s discography). After stating the opening theme, Desmond begins his solo with a buttery-smooth tone and agile, blues-tinged lines on alto sax. Brubeck follows by stretching out on an exploratory piano solo that pushes the harmonic envelope while also revealing a decided Earl Hines influence. Wright, the rock of this quartet, then steps out with a nimble bass solo and Morello wraps up this series of solos with some whirlwind work on the kit before the quartet returns to the bluesy theme. Next up is another number influenced by their trip to the Far East, “Koto Song,” in which Brubeck cleverly invokes folk melodies of Japan in the fabric of the delicate piece, which is essentially a minor key modal blues. Shifting moods from that more introspective number, they next launch into a spirited, up-tempo swinging rendition of the Depression-era number, “Pennies from Heav |

Not Fragile $9.99 After gaining some recognition from the success of the band’s previous album, Bachman-Turner Overdrive got around to recording Not Fragile. Not only had one of the three Bachman brothers (Tim, the rhythm guitarist) left the band to BTO’s advantage, but Randy Bachman and C.F. Turner had clearly grown musically. To the album’s benefit, most of the material on Not Fragile are the band’s much-liked rock anthems, ranging from the hyper-distorted title track, through the famous but far more timid song “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet.” Indeed, for hard rock fanatics, it doesn’t come much better than on Not Fragile. Randy’s electrifying lead guitar is here more raucous than ever before, as are his rowdy vocals (particularly noticeable on the predictable, but fun “Sledgehammer”). The man steals the show on Not Fragile through his extensive and often astounding guitar solos. Generally, though, Bachman-Turner Overdrive are at their prime as a whole, both in songwriting and playing terms. As regards the mixing, it’s hard to find fault with this release. The drums are clear but not so prominent that they dominate the recording, while the guitars, along with the bass, are kept rigidly in their place. Not Fragile is one of the finest arena rock albums of the era, featuring all the hallmarks of what makes a classic release in the genre. Randy’s impressive guitar work and typically boisterous vocals complement the overall framework of the album superbly, as do the crunchy rhythm guitars. This release will astound fans of the genre and band, while those thoroughly against stadium rock may find something to convert their views. ~ Ben Davies, Rovi |

The Prince of Sha’abi $13.95 The musical style shaabi, or the Egyptian street pop that concerns itself with the themes and language of common, everyday people, was brought to the international spotlight in 1999, after British group Transglobal Underground remixed a selection of songs by Hakim, a famous shaabi performer. Since then, the genre has grown in reputation around the world, interesting many listeners with its blend of Western dance beats and pop chords with Eastern keys and phrasing. Saad, a young Egyptian singer, follows in the tradition of Hakim with his U.S. debut, The Prince of Sha’abi. The most important and most prominent aspect of the record, both in the drums (real and programmed) and in the voice of Saad (and all of his background singers), is rhythm. It is lively and complex but it’s not particularly fast (making it particularly well suited to belly dancing, an activity that often uses shaabi), and the instrumentation will often mimic the movement of the percussion, which, added to the intricate melodies, creates a mesmerizing effect. And Saad, like any good shaabi artist, is more than willing to incorporate Western pop influences into his work; there are plenty of elements within the album that will be recognized by listeners unfamiliar with Arabic music, from sweeping string arrangements to horn solos, to dance beats, to pop hooks. If anything, too much of the West is the drawback of the album. The musical accompaniment (much of it done by synthesizers) seems a little dated, almost like the kind of thing you’d except to find in the Egyptian equivalent of a 1980s roller rink. When Saad sticks to a more traditional sound, keeping the dancehall drums but cutting out the overdone keyboard, his voice rings truer, and the sights, sounds, and smells of contemporary Egypt are brought to life. ~ Marisa Brown, Rovi |

USED: Worlds [Evidence] $6.98 Listeners whose first exposure to Joe Lovano was his Blue Note output of the 1990s might assume that Quartets (recorded at New York’s famous Village Vanguard) was his first live album. But in fact, Worlds is a live recording that was made before Lovano signed with Blue Note and became a such a huge name in the jazz world. Recorded at the Amiens International Jazz Festival in France on May 5, 1989, Worlds finds the saxman leading a group that includes his wife, Judi Silvano, on vocals, Bill Frisell on guitar, Tim Hagans on trumpet, Gary Valente on trombone, Henri Texier on bass, and Paul Motian on drums. Lovano excels on the tenor and soprano saxes as well as the obscure alto clarinet, and Silvano’s adventurous improvisations demonstrate that she was already quite distinctive in 1989; nor are Frisell’s meaty solos anything to complain about. Nonetheless, this is hardly a performance that goes out of its way to be accessible — classical-influenced post-bop pieces like “Tafabalewa Square,” “Spirit of the Night,” and “Round Dance” are as angular as they are cerebral and abstract. But if the listener is willing to accept this uncompromising, challenging CD on its own terms, the rewards are abundant. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi |
