Few Notes on Music Instruments

Believe it or not, the biggest reason why some students make such slow progress on

their instrument is not that they aren’t practicing enough; it’s that they aren’t

practicing correctly. Many students waste valuable time trying to get their music to

sound right, but often feel that their progress doesn’t reflect the time they’ve put

into it.

Bad practicing doesn’t just mean that you are not solving your problems, it often

means that you are reinforcing errors, and actually making it more likely that you’ll

make those errors again. In that regard, you might actually be worse off after a bad

“practicing session” than if you were to keep the instrument closed and in its case.

The main culprit with bad practicing is the reinforcing of errors. It happens this way:

the student plays through the music until a mistake is made. He stops because he

hears something wrong. He then fixes that note, and continues on from that spot.

And that is the error!

This is what’s really happening: when a mistake is made, the error really happened

on the note or two before the mistake. Our brains are always thinking ahead, usually

by three or four notes. So if you make a mistake, whatever your brain told you

regarding getting to that note was the actual error. When you make a mistake, you

need to go back several notes, slow things way down, and program into your fingers

how to get to the next note.

When you fix errors in this way, it will sometimes surprise you how far back you

need to go to solve it. But if all you do is fix the note that you heard being played

incorrectly and then move on, you are only reinforcing the error, and actually

making things worse. Students with bad practicing technique actually spend more

time trying to undo mistakes caused by bad practicing technique than they do any

other kind of mistake.

So here’s a summing-up of what you should be doing, as well as some other hints

that will allow you to use your time more efficiently:

1- Don’t just “play through” your music. When you make a mistake, go back a few

notes, and play through the trouble-spot at half the tempo. Do this several times,

deliberately and slowly placing the fingers until the trouble is worked out. Then

slowly increase tempo.

2- Do some silent practice. Do the fingerings while singing through the music,

especially if you play a brass instrument, where constant playing can be tiring.

3- Use a metronome. A metronome will not result in an unmusical performance.

The metronome will keep your tempo steady, and will greatly discipline your use of

practice time.

4- Play your instrument every day. You will begin to lose the fine muscle-control

you’ve been developing by skipping days. Once in a while, you need a break, but try

to practice six out of every seven days.

There is another aspect of music performance that holds musicians back, and that is

the inability to hear oneself objectively. If your practicing technique seems fine, but

you just don’t seem to be improving, it’s usually because you are not really aware of

how you really sound. The best way to hear yourself the way you truly sound is to

record yourself. Get a digital or tape recorder, set up a good microphone, and play.

The first time you hear yourself playing on tape is usually a negative experience, but

don’t let it discourage you! Try to listen critically but constructively. Instead of

getting down on yourself, think of the ways you want to improve, and then go back

to practicing. Diligence is the key. Practice every day, and record and listen to

yourself at least once a week. You’ll reap the benefits almost right away.

Vienna Instruments Woodwinds 1

Vienna Instruments Woodwinds 1

$545

The Vienna Symphonic Library Woodwinds 1 virtual instrument software includes flute 1, French oboe, clarinet, bassoon, flute ensemble (3 players), oboe ensemble (3 players), clarinet ensemble (3 players), and bassoon ensemble (3 players). The oboe is the French Oboe from the Horizon Series Library of the same name, and therefore also offers playing techniques with vibrato. Vienna Instruments Woodwinds I contains numerous new articulations when compared with the existing Pro Edition and Horizon Series Libraries. Solo woodwind instruments as well as ensembles now offer fast Interval Performances in legato and marcato styles, marcato Interval Performances in “normal” tempo, as well as Performance Trills. From the solo instruments, the flute and clarinet arpeggios (major, minor, and diminished broken chords in legato and staccato styles), the solo flute’s mordents, and the French oboe’s flutter tonguing particularly stand out. And the slow legato repetitions of the virtual solo flute are especially appealing.Since the beginning of the Vienna Symphonic Library, first-rate musicians have been providing the sound and character of these wind instruments as soloists and ensemble leaders. Gisela Mashayekhi-Beer was the solo flutist of the Zurich Opera orchestra and taught at the Bruckner University Linz and at the Vienna Music University. Markus Deuter was (and is) first oboist of numerous German orchestras; he came to Vienna especially for the recordings of the French oboe. The clarinetist Daniel Hörth, in spite of his youth, can look back at an international concert career with the Vienna Philharmonic, the Vienna Symphonic Orchestra, and others, and Martin Machovits, among other assignments, is solo bassoon player at the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra.ArticulationsPerformances:Interval Performances: legato, marcato; fast & slowRepetition Performances: legato, portato, staccato; crescendo & diminuendoFlute 1, clarinet Performance Repetition upbeatsPerformance TrillsSolo instruments Grace Note Performances: major 2nd to octave, up & downSolo instruments runs: major, minor, chromatic, whole tone; up & downFlute 1, clarinet arpeggios: major, minor, diminished triads; legato & staccato; medium & fastFlute 1 mordents: legato & staccato, 12 variationsClarinet glissandosSingle notes:Short notes: staccato, short portato, long portatoLong notes: sustains with various attacks and vibratosDynamics: crescendo & diminuendo in various note lengths; fp, sfz, sffz, pfpTrills: half tone, whole tone; crescendo & diminuendoSolo instruments flutter tonguingEnsembles sustained 3-note clusters

I devised this concept of ear training while I was teaching music full time in Florida. Interval study is nothing new, but a patterned system for learning each interval in every key, on every guitar or bass string and fret, or every key on a piano makes it easier than ever. I have been using it with my students since 1997 and their progress has been amazing! Their ability to learn by ear has increased dramatically, and much faster than I expected. It has also resulted in more creative, melodic and harmonic writing. My students and I are finding we can name intervals (both melody and harmony) just by hearing them. For example: you’re driving in your car and you notice that the progression to the song on the radio uses perfect fourth passing chords for the first two measures, then a minor sixth interval played as a major chord, followed by a minor fourth, then a perfect fifth played as a major chord (which theoretically does not fit, but it sounds perfect in this particular song). If Im losing you here, I apologize. After youve studied the intervalpatterns in this book, you will have a complete understanding of these references, and amuch deeper appreciation for music. The same applies for writing music; When writing a lead melody, harmony, or chords you will begin to find it easier to find the next note or notes to add to your song. Overall, expressing your musical thoughts will become second nature. With practice youll be able to do it instantly. Heres how it works: After establishing a root note, there are only 12 intervals that can apply. Spend enough time on each interval and learn to recognize its qualities. When you begin to study the next interval, compare it with what you have already studied and learn their differences. After you have learned all twelve intervals, choose another note as a root and apply the patterns to this key. After you have learned a few keys you will find the remainder of the 12 will progressively get easier, and may not even require much effort at all. Thats the beauty of these patterns; they never

The Vienna Instruments Collection Vienna Konzerthaus Organ is the first sampled organ recorded in a concert hall, not in a church, thus blending perfectly with orchestral performances. Obviously, it is also the first instrument not recorded at the Vienna’s Silent Stage, and yet it adheres to their overall sampling concept since it has been captured in exactly the same space that provides the essential impulse responses for their upcoming MIR reverberation and mixing engine. That space is the venerable Great Hall of the “Wiener Konzerthaus”, where the famous “Rieger Organ” was installed in 1913.The Vienna Konzerthaus Organ Collection includes 14 GB of stereo samples covering three manuals with 38 single stops and one pedal with 18 single stops. The user can put together his own registrations by combining the stops in the Vienna Instruments’ user interface, retaining the flexibility of this magnificent instrument. In addition, organ experts were invited to create a wealth of pre-recorded registrations that present the user with the most important and best sounding combinations. Of course these registers can be easily extended to the user’s needs or taste. There are also isolated samples of the valves of each register as well as two minutes of room noise and the wind-chest idling, so the user can add these elements to the mix for even more realism.Since the Rieger Organ had been equipped with MIDI technology a few years ago, the Vienna team developed some new recording and editing approaches. Because of the exactly defined length of the MIDI notes, they had the chance to distinguish between the different reverb trails emanating from short or long notes. This is important because several ranks (especially the very deep ones) take up to a second to unfold their full power, so the release samples of short notes can sound very different from long notes. Using the underlying MIDI data they could also recreate the authentic latency behavior of each flute. The different latencies also represent the spatial arrangement of the flutes, providing another reason why the three-dimensional recreation of this organ sounds so authentic.Requires the ViennaKeyPatches:Manual I StopsPrincipal 16′Bordun 16′Principal 8′Gedackt 8′Fugara 8′Nasatquinte 5 1_3′Octave 4′Reedpipe 4′Superoctave 2′Rauschquinte 2fKornett 3-5fMixtur 5fCymbel 3fTrumpet 16′Trumpet 8′Clarino 4′Manual II StopsViola 16′Quintatoen 16′Principal 8′Bordun 8′Viola da Gamba 8′Salicional 8′Unda maris 8′Octave 4′Flute octaviante 4′Gemshorn 4′Woodpipe 2′Sesquialtera 2fMixtur 4fKrummhorn 8′Manual III StopsQuinte 2 2-3′Lieblich-Gedackt 16′Violin-Principal 8′Vox coelestis 8′Aeolsharp 4′Gemsquinte 2 2-3′Flautino 2′Piccolo 1′Oboe 8′Manual RegistrationsSmall PrincipalplenumLarge PrincipalplenumLarge Principalplenum + ReedsString Choir IString Choir IIFlutes IFlutes IIModular Plenum-AModular Plenum-BModular Plenum-CModular Plenum-DModular Plenum-EModular Gedackt-AModular Gedackt-BModular Gedackt-CModular Gedackt-DG

Linear Spaces with Few Lines

Linear Spaces with Few Lines

$51.16

A famous theorem in the theory of linear spaces states thatevery finite linear space has at least as many lines aspoints. This result of De Bruijn and Erds led to theconjecture that every linear space with few lines canbeobtained from a projective plane by changing only a smallpart of itsstructure. Many results related to this conjecture have been proved inthe last twenty years. This monograph surveys the subjectand presents several new results, such as the recent proofof the DowlingWilsonconjecture.Typical methods used in combinatorics are developed so thatthe text can be understood without too much background. Thusthe book will be of interest to anybody doing combinatoricsand can also help other readers to learn the techniques usedin this particular field. Vienna Instruments Saxophones

Vienna Instruments Saxophones

$399

The Vienna Instruments II Saxophones Collection is the sequel to Vienna’s Horizon Series Saxophones I software library. With this instrument, the saxophones are now complete, and the performance algorithms of the Vienna Instruments work wonders with these samples. The focus has been directed equally to orchestral settings as well as to jazz. Famous examples for orchestral appearances of these instruments are the saxophone quartet by Alexander Glasunow, the alto saxophone concerts by Glasunow and Debussy, or the Castello from Mussorgsky’s “Pictures.” In addition, a lot of articulations for jazz and big band requirements are included, such as bends, tongue slaps, growling, screams, extended flageolets, key sounds, etc. And there’s the cool long and short downward ending phrases triggered as release samples. Music in Ancient Greece and Rome

Music in Ancient Greece and Rome

$40.95

“”Music in Ancient Greece and Rome” is a comprehensive introduction to the study of music from Homeric times to the Roman emperor Trajan. John G. Landels offers the first scholarly overview of the practical and performance elements of music, rather than the moral and aesthetic discussion typified by the works of Plato. Illustrated with transcriptions of surviving musical scores, diagrams and line-drawings of instruments and performers, the book explores the contexts in which music played a role, such as mythology and poetry. Detailed discussion is also given to the instruments, including the aulos, the kithara and the lyre, as well as the ingenious notation system devised by the Greeks which enables us to read the few surviving scores.”

The film’s worldwide success would make all three men international stars. For his part, Morricone ratcheted his work (which until then had been largely pedes…

Hohner Harmonica MARINE BAND HARMONICA G-Key - HH1896BLG

Hohner Harmonica MARINE BAND HARMONICA G-Key – HH1896BLG

$28.99

In 1821, a 16-year-old German clockmaker named Christian Ludwig Buschmann put 15 pitchpipes together and invented what we know today as the harmonica. The tiny instrument may have faded away unnoticed among all the exciting innovations of the 19th century, but Buschmann recognized his invention as “a truly unique musical instrument ? only four inches in diameter and equally high, with 21 notes and crescendo playing possibilities?with harmonies of six tones, which can be held as long as the player has breath.” He named it the “mundaeoline”, which is German for mouth harp. In time, all of Europe had heard about this delightful hand-held wonder. -After a few decades passed, another clockmaker purchased one of these handcrafted early instruments and decided to mass produce harmonicas. This young visionary was Matthias Hohner, who founded Hohner in 1857 at age 24. During that first year, Hohner, his wife and one employee produced 650 harmonicas. Hohner then shipped some of his mouth harps to cousins, who had immigrated to the US, and harmonica demand soared as peddlers, emigrants and soldiers spread the diminutive instrument?s popularity across America. The US quickly became an important market for the emerging company’s musical products. -In more recent years, the harmonica has gained status as a serious musical instrument. It can now be heard in the world?s most renowned concert halls, with music written specifically for harmonica by world-acclaimed contemporary composers. Folk singers like Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, and Bob Dylan often played harmonica together with guitar.-In certain circles, the Harmonica is referred as a Blues Harp. It was played by poor folk and social outcasts. During hard times, and between battles of war, someone always complemented the silence with a sorrowful wail on a harmonica. -The Marine Band model, which became the most popular harmonica of all time, was named after the famous band LED by American bandmaster John Philip Sousa. -during t

At first blush, adding Roswell Rudd to a group of native West African musicians might seem, well, stretched. Surprisingly, though, it proves a remarkably impressive combination — in large part due to the simple melodies, the opportunity for the trombonist to stretch out, and the quality of the band. Curiously, although recorded in Mali, half of the tunes are not indigenous to the region: Three are by Rudd, “Jackie-ing” is, of course, by Monk, and “All Through the Night” is a traditional Welsh song. Rudd plays the only Western-style horn (the others perform on a variety of local instruments or contribute vocals), and his burly tone and raunchy swagger take full advantage of the moment. The trombonist is in prime form, relaxed and expansive. The Africans are splendid, too, not only laying down a sympathetic carpet of light percussion over which the trombonist improvises but also providing some interesting diversions on instruments such as the kora, the balophone, the djembe, and the ngone. The acclaimed Toumani Diabate is co-leader of the session, contributes a few pieces, and shines on his native kora (a 21-stringed harp). “Jackie-ing” is perhaps the most interesting of the tunes, if only because it is so difficult for the Africans to manage. As Rudd explains in his notes, the tradition among the Africans is to focus on simple riffs as accompaniments and to continue to explore sections to their fullest rather than jumping to the next section of a song. Ultimately, these issues (and others) are worked out, and Monk is given a sort of facelift that proves compelling. Overall, the band is tight and well-rehearsed, Rudd’s solos rival his best, and the tunes are catchy, simple, and accessible. Fans of the trombonist or of West African music will not wish to miss the opportunity to pick up this rare and exciting collaboration. ~ Steven Loewy, Rovi

 Tubular Bells 2003 [Bonus DVD]

Tubular Bells 2003 [Bonus DVD]

$34.98

The fourth time Mike Oldfield has recorded Tubular Bells, and the third time in close to a decade, Tubular Bells 2003 handily reveals a few improvements over the last few, but still has nothing on the original (most of which was trumped by its brief, well-known theme). It’s obvious Oldfield expanded his instrumental palette for this recording; the notes list over 40 instruments that he plays (that is, if you include his mixing desk, his 1000 mHz processor, and the 1.2 Gb of RAM credited). Unfortunately, Oldfield substituted an awkward stateliness for the smooth, haunted elegance of the original. As before, he uses “Part One” to evoke the theme several times over with various stylistic nods. Ironically, many of these references are to more popularized versions of the styles than to the originals themselves (e.g., “Thrash” sounds embarrassingly similar to “Rockin’ in the U.S.A.”). One trick, and a highly marketable one, up Oldfield’s sleeve is a special guest appearance to make the familiar — for fans of Tubular Bells — announcements of instruments to be soloed on, here performed by John Cleese. In his diminished old English gentleman’s voice, he makes sharp retorts such as “two slightly distorted guitars!” with a mood that falls somewhere between folksy and ironic. “Part Two” is much better; instead of attempting to reference styles or instruments, Oldfield breaks new (for him) stylistic ground, and ends with an ingenious version of “The Sailor’s Hornpipe” (aka Popeye’s theme). [This edition includes a bonus DVD.] ~ John Bush, Rovi
