How to Have the Best Parties with Soul Bands and artists
The aim for any event is definitely have a very fabulous time. It’s really a occasion during which the suits and neckties are traded in for glittering tops and smoking hot stilettos. It really is the perfect opportunity to dispense with small talk and joke about the day by day anxiety. It’s actually a moment to strut toward dance floor and then let the soul companies electrify each single motion.
A soul band most likely will complement, or even lead, the energy and merriment for this celebration. This kind of band is perfect for any type of celebration: wedding receptions, birthday bashes, corporate and business celebrations, and private get togethers. This particular band provides a broad range of songs to perform, which will get the job done tremendously fine in a diversified guest list. Their collection can include some sort of well known compositions from soul, funk, disco, Afro-Cuban, a whole bunch more. A soul band may also perform as a Latin band. The pros who have played at high profile get togethers more often than not have music players who are competent to play any and all style of songs. And even if a band is regarded as a soul band, the variety enables the group to execute almost any any type of songs.
An experienced soul band will often accept on virtually any request from your guests. The evening may start through a groovy Earth, Wind & Fire old classic, or perhaps rip right into a Sam & Dave vibrate. As the revelers pick to switch to samba or salsa, the proficient performers may take on Celia Cruz or Tito Puente. The moment a soul band is the evening’s entertainment, it doesn’t really matter specifically how it starts. The primary end goal is to keep just about every person dancing.
Surely, with passionate and upbeat sounds like the ones cited, the attendees may find it difficult to not swing, twist, and boogie down. Soul or Latin bands commonly are not expected to play accompaniment tracks. Immediately after the conga drums join up with the trombones along with the maracas meld along with the upright bass or the saxophone, the dance floor will likely be swinging.
There are groups to accomodate the scale of each event. A quartet to sextet would certainly fit smaller functions. A 25-piece dance band would probably be perfect for ballroom-type happenings. Surely no need to get anxious in regards quantity of band personnel. A crucial consideration would be looking for a site with the appropriate acoustics to take care of the songs that the group of musicians plays. Or having to deal with a band with its very own sound system ought to clear away any anxiousness.
A soul band can promise an evening of revelry your friends definitely will be speaking of about for several weeks to come. Besides having a good time, every person gets in a pretty good workout from all the grooving.

Guidelines On How To Organize The Best Celebrations By Using Soul Bands
The goal for any party is to really have an amazing time. It’s a time when the business suits and neckties are swapped for glistening tops and smoking hot stilettos. This is a time to dispense with modest talk and laugh about the everyday tension. This is a time for you to sway to the dance floor and allow the soul bands electrify your every move.
A soul band could very well complement, if not guide, the energy and fun of the celebration. This kind of band is great for any kind of celebration: weddings, birthday bashes, corporate galas, and private parties. Such type of band includes a number of songs to do, which will work immensely well with a unique guest list. Their arsenal occasionally includes any prominent compositions from soul, funk, disco, Afro-Cuban, and much more. A soul band can also perform as a Latin band. Pros who have performed at high profile parties normally have artists who are able to perform any kind of music. So even when a group is viewed as a soul band, the range enables the band to do virtually any type of tunes.
An accomplished soul band can take on any request from the visitors. The evening may start with a cool Earth, Wind & Fire classic, or rip in to a Sam & Dave shimmy. When the revelers arrange to switch to samba or perhaps salsa, the skilled musicians could take on Celia Cruz or Tito Puente. When a soul band is the evening’s entertainment, it doesn’t matter how it sets out. The key objective is to have every person dancing.
Indeed, with passionate and upbeat songs just like the ones described, your invited guests may find it hard not to swing, twist, and boogie down. Soul or Latin bands are not intended to play background music. The moment the conga drums join the trombones and the maracas melt with the upright bass and the saxophone, the dance floor will likely be bouncing.
You can find bands to suit the size of any social gathering. A quartet to a sextet would suit smaller functions. A 25-piece band would be excellent for ballroom-type events. There’s no need to be anxious about the number of band members. An important consideration could be finding a venue with the proper acoustics to handle the songs that the band will play. Or finding a band with its own audio system should clear any uneasiness away.
A soul band can promise a night of revelry your attendees will be talking about for days to come. Apart from having fun, every person gets in an effective exercise from all the grooving.

Let me just be the first to say… BRAVO! Prince has created a 3 disc masterpiece complete with 80′s inspirational funky tracks that are sure to unlock your past memories of high school, house parties, and purple rain. It is spiritual, prolific, and funky beyond expectation. The lyrics alone deserve praise as Prince makes his point about political shortcomings and offers up the solution draped in a musical ambience that you will want to play over and over again. This is nothing short of masterful!
LotusFlower is a revealing radical expose of musical genius dipped in spirituality (if you get it) and most do not. But if you do, Prince will take you on a journey with songs like ‘Colonized Mind’ that rips through to your soul with brilliance and fortitude. As Prince sings ” without God, it’s just the blind leadin the blind”. you are reminded he hasn’t lost his prolific talent that first spawned ’1999′ and other classic songs he’s most noted for. Prince shows off his guitar skills with ease and leaves you with chills down your spine as he melodically plays the guitar strings like no other on the music scene today.
If you’re a dreamer you’ll like the song ‘Dreamer’ which has a strong Hendrix like guitar riff and hints at a conspiracy afoot among all of us and asks you to keep one eye open. The funk hasn’t left the building with MPLS sound and pokes fun at today’s no talent musicians that clutter the airwaves masterfully bringing back that old school groove that we so much longed for. Prince is like a musical prophet and politically incorrect preacher on Lotus Flower and if you listen hard enough you’ll recieve his message.
With 3 discs in all there is also a jazzy Prince protege’ added to the mix that compiles SADE like sounds with Old Sheila E bubble gum compositions with one such track titled ‘Another Boy’ Also ‘Kept Woman’ is very good listening as well. The central theme and message of all 3 discs seem to be a spiritual one that calls for transformation to the current music scene as well as you and me. On a scale from 1 to 10 (10 being the highest) I give Lotus Flower a perfect 10. Prince plays it and tells it like it is.

Big Fish Audio Funk Quartet Audio Loops $69.95 In the 1970s, funk was the soundtrack to the African-American experience. From the jazz-inflected funk of Roy Ayers and Lonnie Liston Smith, to the pop of Stevie Wonder, and the abstract freakouts of Eddie Harris and the iconic cartoon funk of Parliament/Funkadelic, this was the thread that held everything together. It was the death of bebop and the seeds of disco and hip hop. It challenged rock as king of the heap, and ultimately got a nation to shake its booty.Producer Rich Mendelson has distilled funk down to its essence: guitar, bass, drums and piano. With Funk Quartet you can create entire funk-inflected tracks with the material’s many variations, or just use individual loops to add that little head-noddin’ extra. But however you use it, throw your chair out of the studio…Funk Quartet will keep you on your feet! |

Hal Leonard Advanced Funk Drumming Book/2DVD Set $22.49 Written and produced by funk drumming specialist Jim Payne and recommended by drumming greats Peter Erskine, Stanton Moore, Steve Smith, Zoro, and Bill Stewart, this multimedia package combines a wealth of practical ideas with modern technology to make it easier and more intuitive for drummers to learn new grooves and an essential drumming style. It includes a book with fully notated transcriptions and tips plus two DVDs with more than 200 QuickTime video and MP3 audio clips. In creating this package, Payne composed and video-recorded the grooves before transcribing them. The first half of the book, Sections 1 through 14, is organized in a sequential manner; moving from simple grooves to more advanced permutations. Sections 15 through 21 present additional patterns in a more organic and sometimes random progression. To further facilitate the multi-sensory learning process, many of the beats are shown in both slow and fast versions. The speed of video loops can be further reduced using the standard software in QuickTime, which is very helpful for teachers and students. Although Payne has included beats that support the development of specific techniques that are required to correctly and comfortably perform contemporary funk drumming patterns, another progressive aspect of the project is its relative lack of purely technical exercises. Author Jim Payne has played, recorded and taught drums for many years and is the author of several books on the subject of funk drumming, including Funk Drumming, The Complete Book of Funk Drumming, The Great Drummers of R&B, Funk & Soul, and 100 Famous Funk Beats.Softcover with DVD-ROM68 pagesSize: 12″ x 9″Author: Jim PayneISBN: 1423483952 |

Many drummers have added a piccolo snare drum to their drum set as a second snare and can go to that piccolo snare at any time during their performance. The 10 shell diameter (and drum head size) allows for a higher-pitched tuning while retaining a 5 depth gives you a full, wide and not an overly sharp tone. The PEARL 5×10 Firecracker also features strong 1.6mm steel hoops, low-mass CL-50 lugs with 6-point tuning, and the very dependable and precise SR-018 snare strainer and snares. So light the fuse and stand back! Not all snare drum stands will tighten enough to hold a 10 drum securely so please see our list of Things You Will Need for our recommendations.Get your PEARL 5×10 Firecracker Snare Drum from Sam Ash Direct today, with fast, free shipping at the guaranteed lowest price. Afreaka! [Bonus Tracks] $24.98 DJs like Gilles Petersen have been hip to the seven-piece wonder band Demon Fuzz for years, and as of the 21st century — now that everybody’s put away their James Brown records for sampling — other club jocks are getting into the act of sampling this incredibly rare LP. Afreaka! was the only release by Demon Fuzz. Released in 1970, Afreaka! is a wild mash of Afro-Latin funk, breakbeats, tripped-out soul, jazz fusion, and psychedelic journeying. These seven black musicians took on everything that was happening, and were musicians enough to make it work for them. This CD reissue by Castle/Sanctuary includes the entire original album plus their three-track EP whose A-side was “I Put a Spell on You.” Yeah, there are vocals on this set, but they are far from a distraction. Imagine the early Santana band mashed hard on the mouth by Fela, Sly, and mid-’60s Blue Note soul-jazz — and having heard prog rock. Oh yeah…heavy, demented, and so out there that it’s timeless. Had they heard this when they did their mighty Root Down EP, the Beastie Boys would have released a very different record. Most tracks run in the eight- and nine-minute range and get down with tough drums at the core, with rhythmic shifts happening on a grooved dime. Killer horns, Hammond B-3s, electric guitars, and deep tough slinky funky bass all wind together to create a mix so utterly intoxicating and fluid that it’s difficult to take in one listen — check out the Eastern mode sax solo on “Another Country” or the stomp-and-slide greasiness of “Past Present and Future.” And as for the Screamin’ Jay Hawkins cover, it’s like the Meters jamming with Osibisa! There’s also a fine extended voodoolicious psych-soul cover of Ray Harris’ R&B classic “Mercy” (subtitled “Variation No. 1″). This is the real deal — solid, freaky-deaky, and groove-centric. Not to be missed. [The CD was also released with bonus tracks.] ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi |

Akron/Family II (The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT) $14.98 Akron/Family debuted their new format as a trio minus vocalist and guitarist Ryan Vanderhoof on 2009′s Set ‘Em Wild, Set ‘Em Free. They also moved pointedly away from the trappings of post-psych acid folk into multiple directions simultaneously: from animistic avant-rock, freaky funk, and even prog. S/T II: The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT, issued in February of 2011, solidifies that move in a surprising manner. It is easily the most optimistic, spiritually blissed-out recording in the band’s catalog. It was composed and arranged in a cabin near a live volcano in Akan National Park in Hokkaido, Japan, then recorded at Michigan Central Station, the massive abandoned train station in Detroit, as well as at various homes in Portland, OR. Teaming once more with producer Chris Koltay, the trio of Miles Seaton, Seth Olinsky, and Dana Janssen are joined on select tracks by Vanderhoof on slide guitar, vocalist Ali Beletic, trumpeter Ed Sortman, and Japanese vanguard percussion legend Tatsuya Nakatani. Tribalistic drums, distorted lo-fi efx, a screaming lead guitar — that sounds a lot like the late Stuart Adamson’s from Skids — soaring organ, and a chorus of chanted vocals introduce “Silly Bears” and thus the album. All instruments are on stun, as the vocals chart a journey to metaphoric bliss inside a post-acid nursery rhyme. The sounds of nature — ? la birdsongs — permeate the less strident but ultimately more beautiful textures and ambiences of “Islands,” with lilting keyboards, drifting guitars, and hypnotic tom-toms. “So It Goes” begins as a riff-laden guitar fest, but shifts gears once the melody kicks in and becomes a celebratory paean to generosity. Sonic abstraction has its place here too, on the moodier “A AAA O A WAY” and in the shimmering interior dreamscape that introduces “Fuji II (Single Pane).” The album’s final cut, “Creator,” uses Pharoah Sanders’ lyric from “The Creator Has a Master Plan,” but is far from his beautifully … |

Butterfly $18.98 Fourteen years is a long time to spend with one label, especially for jazz and fusion groups. Azymuth celebrated 14 years with the United Kingdom’s Far Out label in 2008. Butterfly is their eight record for the imprint and their first new studio album in four years. The original trio — Jose Roberto Bertami (keyboards/vocals), Alex Malheiros (bass/guitars/vocals), and Ivan Conti (drums/percussion/vocals) — is still together after 35 years. Here jazz, funk, fusion, and elegant samba are woven together seamlessly. The disc was produced by the trio with David Brinkworth (Harmonic 33). “Butterfly,” the album opener, is a sultry, breezy cover of the classic Herbie Hancock track, originally on 1974′s Thrust. The elegant sound of gorgeously arranged strings (by Arthur Verocai no less), warm rolling Rhodes piano, Conti’s breaking drums that walk the line between lithe funk and samba, and a pronounced but languid bassline gradually and deliberately build the space, stopping at interludes to reinsert the sensuous mood in the melodic line. Certainly it’s an auspicious way to begin, but it’s only one of the many highlights on this set. Another follows immediately with the slippery “Os Cara La,” a slamming jazz-funk groove tune; Malheiros’ bassline is pure snap and pop, while Conti moves in counterpoint to his rhythmic statement, and Bertami’s layers of keyboards weave an alluring kaleidoscope of their own. “Meu Doce Amigo,” written by Malheiros, is an elegiac samba dedicated to his late son who passed in 2003. Ze Carlos guests on flute and entwines with the wordless vocals and the weave of acoustic guitars and hand and brushed drums. “Avioenda Rio Branco,” with its meld of Rhodes and B-3 atop the popping breaks by Conti also contains some tenor blowing by Carlos, all propelled by the trance-like dancefloor funk bass of Malheiros and topped off with a killer solo on the cuica and hand percussion. “New Dawn” is nearly a samba but it stays on this side of jazz with b… |

Candygram for Mowo! $11.98 Adam Dorn, aka Mocean Worker, has looked around at the current socio-economic situation and decided that what the world needs is a little bit of feel-good dance music. So he gathered some friends (including Bill Frisell, Hal Willner, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Charlie Hunter, and Lyrics Born) and put together a jazzy, funky, sometimes downright humorous program that blends up-to-the-minute breakbeats, pre-swing jazz, ’70s rare groove, Latin hip-hop, hard bop, and house to create something that sounds simultaneously familiar and fresh. The cover illustration shows a chocolate bar dressed in a Roaring Twenties-style top hat and tuxedo, insouciantly smoking a cigarette, and that gives you a good idea of what kind of sound and mood to expect. Jazz-leaning electronica artists often make the mistake of eviscerating the beat in favor of a faux sophistication, but Dorn manages to convey all the sonic complexity of five decades of jazz without sacrificing slamming grooves: notice in particular the ancient-sounding jazz combo combined with hard funk beats on “Hoot and Hollah,” and the way Kirk, Frisell, and Hunter all integrate themselves beautifully with the orchestral backdrop and the ethereal female vocals on “Sho Nuff Now.” Lyrics Born sounds like he’s having the time of his life over the stripped-down boogie of “My Own Little World,” and “Do Like Ya Like” blends fragmented layers of soul horns with skittering brushed drums to very fine effect. This album won’t change the way you think about macroeconomics, but if you want to forget your pension-fund losses and swing the night away in your living room, this is the perfect vehicle for it. ~ Rick Anderson, Rovi |

Come on Down!/The Reason Why I’m Talking S–t $13.99 This repackages two of Eddie Harris’ 1970s albums: Come on Down! was recorded in Miami in 1970 and The Reason Why I’m Talking S–t is a bizarre live album from 1975. Released as a two-disc collection, this is one of the stranger things Collectables has ever done. The first disc is a solid soul-jazz, rock, and funk date with Ira Sullivan, pianist Dave Crawford, Duck Dunn on bass, and Cornell Dupree on guitar with an all too rare appearance by Tubby Zeigler on drums. Harris wrote all but one track. Produced by Tom Dowd, it’s a gritty, greasy burner with the guitars allowed front space with the horns and paired with Harris’ electric sax. It’s FONKIFIED. Check “Live Right Now” or “Why Don’t You Quit” for heavy groove consciousness. The Reason Why I’m Talking S–t, well, is just that. Recorded at three different venues, it features Harris telling off-color sex jokes on most of the album. For real, it seems like an attempt at standup comedy with a band that doesn’t get to play often enough in the background. Side two has more music than side one, but not much and the entire thing is disposable at best. Harris was a great musician, but a horrible comedian. Collectables should have released Come On Down! alone. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi |

Deep Fried Satisfied $15.98 Hay is a one-man band from Australia who plays live with a double-necked guitar/bass that he loops with various pedals to set up a mighty wail of blues/rock guitar noise. On this album he plays drums, bass, sitar, and electronic percussion, using mainly electronics to produce the sound of a real drum kit. Hay’s feel-good music has a notable punk/funk edge and he’s got considerable chops, especially on slide guitar, and an over the top vocal approach that makes him sound like a party animal. As you might expect from the album title, Hay also has an irrepressible sense of absurd humor, although he does get relatively serious once a while. On “Friend,” one of the more sedate tunes on the disc, he gives us a slow, funkified blues with stuttering James Brown-influenced guitar accents and a wall-shaking bassline. It’s a salute to a pal who got him through some hard times, but adds a promise of a drunken binge. Think George Clinton meets J.J. Cale. “Get Me Some” gives the details of a New York City snack attack that leads Hay to the portals of a pizza joint. He salutes thin crust pizza using slashing acoustic slide and crunchy rock chords. “Deep Fried Satisfied” describes Hay’s ambivalence about fast food. He’d like a salad, but the chicken tastes so good, even as he ironically describes its affect on his arteries. While the rest of the songs are not about barbecue or fried chicken, they are greasy in that good, ol’ fashion, down-home way. He rails about dishonest used car salesmen on “Don’t Give Me That,” the tribulations of trying to pay bills over the phone on the stomping “On Hold,” and sings the praises of true love on “Heading Home” and “Miss You So.” The most surprising track is a cover of Queen’s “We Will Rock You,” an explosion of slide guitar delivered over a primitive drumbeat. Hay delivers the lyric as a staccato rap, then closes with a quiet moaning chorus that takes the tune back to the Mississippi Delta. ~ j. poet, Rovi |

Dream $16.98 Keller Williams has built his reputation as a one-man band, but also as an equally prolific and eclectic recording artist. So, it’s no surprise that he would want to stand his self-defined image on its ear with this long-in-the making collection of collaborations with other performers. No less than 31 other singers and musicians join him on one or more of the 16 tracks on the 73-minute CD. The biggest name, particularly for an artist known for his jam band associations, is former Grateful Dead singer/guitarist Bob Weir, who joins Williams on “Cadillac,” the two exchanging acoustic guitar riffs and singing Williams’ typically quirky lyrics. Then there is B? la Fleck, who adds his banjo to the progressive bluegrass of “People Watchin’.” Although perhaps fashioned with the guest stars in mind, those songs are characteristic of Williams’ most frequent style, as is “Sing for My Dinner,” on which he’s joined by the members of the String Cheese Incident, longtime friends of his. Other guests inspire different musical explorations. Jeff Covert contributes drums and lead guitar to the first track, “Play This,” which sounds like a mash-up of hardcore punk rock ? la Black Flag and the funk of Red Hot Chili Peppers. The funk continues with the second track, “Celebrate Your Youth,” featuring the band ModeReko, which could be mistaken for a lost song by Dave Matthews Band. The appearance of Michael Franti on “Ninja of Love” inspires a sort of Japanese reggae number, and Sanjay Mishra and Samir Chatterjee take the music to India for the instrumental “Lil’ Sexy Blues.” Second-generation San Francisco rock guitarist Steve Kimock, with Williams on bass and John Molo on drums, gives “Twinkle” a seven-plus-minute instrumental, the feel of one of the Dead’s “Space” improvisations, but Williams expects jazz guitarist John Scofield to adapt to his own style for “Got No Feather,” and Scofield obliges. No matter who’s accommodating whom, however, this is always Kelle… |

False Start $13.98 Arthur Lee (rhythm guitar/lead vocals/piano) chose to keep the Love moniker alive after disintegrating the band’s original incarnation. By the close of the 1960s, Lee was joined by a new lineup featuring a rhythm section of Frank Fayad (bass) and George Suranovich (drums), with Jay Donnellan (lead guitar) and then Gary Rowles (lead guitar) holding court as the band’s primary stringman with the latter present on False Start (1970). While the Lee-supplied material isn’t his most memorable, one positive factor is the combo’s consistency and cohesiveness. This can be traced back to Love having just completed a successful European tour and Lee being able to collaborate with his longtime pal Jimi Hendrix, who would not only help Lee write the LP’s jammed-out opener “The Everlasting First,” but also even stick around long enough to lend his unmistakable southpaw to the recording. The track starts abruptly — as if someone inadvertently jostled a power cord loose — joining the action in-progress. Ostensibly, Hendrix’s instrumental interaction is the impetus behind the number, but it is Lee’s sorely underappreciated lyrical abilities that turn it into a bluesy love ballad. The catchy “Flying” typifies the early-’70s boogie that Jo Jo Gunne was able cash in on. Otherwise, it is pretty much fluff. Considerably more interesting is the heavier poppy (think the Raspberries) sound of “Gimi a Little Break” with engaging chord progressions that conjure up Lee’s work on “August” from their previous outing Four Sail (1969). The concert extract “Stand Out” — a prime example of Love’s aforementioned on-stage unity — does just that as the spirited side was derived from the then-recent round of live dates that preceded False Start’s creation. It’s packed with a compact, hard-edged energy that could be mistaken for Grand Funk or even a mellowed-out MC5. Proving his uncanny ability to jump from genre to genre, Lee heads down-home for the countrified “Keep on Shining” with … |

Feeding the Wheel $17.98 On Feeding the Wheel, Jordan Rudess has modernized the keyboard sounds pioneers like E. Power Biggs, Rick Wakeman, Gary Wright, Alan Hovhaness, and Keith Emerson broke ground with. The latter-day third ivory player in Dream Theater takes Gary Wright’s Dream Weaver a step or two into the twilight zone. “Headspace” is a nice moody piece, kind of like Edgar Froese outside of Kraftwerk with more activity in the mix. “Quantum Soup” features Steve Morse of the Dregs on guitar solo with Terry Bozzio of Missing Persons playing percussion, the first of eight numbers the ex-Zappa drummer provides the bottom for. Track two has its own evolution, from jazz/progressive rock to a bassy funk eight minutes into the tune, with the 11 minutes of “Quantum Soup” melting nicely into the six minutes of “Shifting Sands.” The spaced notations in the CD booklet are vaguely familiar, that aforementioned Dream Weaver concept a simplified version of this. “We all feed wheels that carry our hopes and dreams to another day” is the sentiment written by Rudess, and those thoughts are unleashed in music which will appeal to fans of Dream Theater and ELP and those who feel Steely Dan is too mainstream. “Revolving Door” could be the theme to Hawaii Five-O turned upside down; strange vocals invade for a few moments on this otherwise instrumental enterprise. The title track can be a bit much except for the staunchest fans of progressive rock, over seven minutes of the piano runs Jordan Rudess learned at Juilliard embellished with high-end production and superb drums. For those who thought Emerson, Lake & Palmer’s “The Nutrocker” wasn’t energetic enough, explore this disc. “Dreaming in Titanium” is like some prelude to music by Prince, while “Center of the Sphere” is part of the artist’s quest, the “search for the ultimate sound” that Rudess speaks of. Bobby Hebb has stated that he has found the lost chord, now he’s trying to figure out what to do with it. Feeding the Wheel is def… |

Grateful Dead concert at Kezar Stadium on 23 Mar 75 $9.98 Although short by normal standards, this is one of the most extraordinary sets of the Grateful Dead’s entire career. This unexpected set was a big surprise, not only for its highly unusual musical content, but simply for the fact that the Grateful Dead performed. It’s all ancient history now, but in October of 1974, the Dead officially retired from live performance, after filming the Winterland run that would comprise The Grateful Dead Movie. Few expected to ever see them perform live as a band again, so when they showed up in full, with keyboardists Merl Saunders and Ned Lagin in tow, as well as former drummer Mickey Hart, it was a major cause for celebration. The Dead, who ended up only playing four shows in 1975, could have easily satisfied the Bay Area crowd, both Deadheads and others, with a collection of their straight-ahead classic rock songs. Instead they pulled a truly punk move before the punks were even around by playing a lyric-less, melody-evasive jam that draws on material from their 1975 Blues for Allah album. The set showcases the Grateful Dead’s instrumental prowess, especially their mid 70s penchant for jazz-inspired jams. Alternating between intriguing free-jazz abstractions and deep jazz-funk grooves, the Blues for Allah suite surprisingly avoids gratuitous noodling; which is quite a feat considering the double guitar and drums attack and the triple keyboard onslaught. Garcia’s sharp, incisive guitar runs lead the instrumental wolf pack with the two electronic pianos providing complementing lines just beneath the surface. Lesh’s bass and Kreutzmann’s drums provide the backbone of the grooves while Saunders’s organ, often low and drone-like in the mix, quietly ties everything together. The “Johnny B. Goode” closer, coming in just under four minutes, wraps up the set with a rock n’ roll burner. The band’s clever one-two punch is a hit with the audience and they roar loudly after each song. Fans of the Grateful Dead will appreciate this show as |

Hello Tomorrow $18.98 Other than a Christmas album and a greatest-hits collection, we haven’t heard anything new from contemporary jazz saxophonist Dave Koz since his successful 2007 date At the Movies (though recording somewhat infrequently has been a Koz trademark). Hello Tomorrow, his first date for Concord, is not only full of new tunes in a diverse array, but hosts an impressive cast of band and guest players, as well. Produced by John Burk and Marcus Miller, the set kicks off with the euphoric jazz-funk groover “Put the Top Down,” featuring Lee Ritenour on lead guitar, Ray Parker, Jr. on rhythm, Brian Culbertson handling the synths and programming, Omar Hakim on drums, Sheila E. on percussion, and a three-piece horn section adding to Koz’s alto. It’s followed by the lithe, nocturnal, sensual funk that is “When Will I Know for Sure,” with Boney James playing tenor in concert with Koz. “Getaway,” with its breezy pop Caribbean sheen, features Jonathan Butler and Sheila E. duetting; Butler handles the guitar chores as well. Koz provides a serviceable vocal on a cover of “This Guy’s in Love with You,” with the tune’s original hitmaker Herb Alpert guesting on trumpet; the latter’s version wins, hands down. Jeff Lorber helps out on two solid cuts here in “Anything’s Possible” and what is sure to be a format smash in “Remember Where You Come From” that also includes the four-piece horn section. There’s an uncharacteristic contemporary jazz-blues in “There’s a Better Way,” with Keb’ Mo’ on vocals and acoustic guitar; he also appears on the uplifting, 21st century take on jazzy Big Easy R&B in “Think Big,” with Christian Scott laying the N.O. tradition on thick with his trumpet. Why two small group ballads were chosen to close the set is questionable, but the brief “What You Leave Behind” is a nice outro. Given how seamlessly the rest of this fits together, Hello Tomorrow is no doubt one of the most ambitious recordings in Koz’s catalog. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi |

Herbie Mann Group concert at Carnegie Hall on 30 Jun 73 $6.98 Following his success at the 1972 Newport Jazz Festival, when he brought his sextet to Yankee Stadium for a sizzling set, flutist-bandleader Herbie Mann returned to George Wein’s annual bash (relocated to New York City the previous year) with an expanded lineup that featured two guitarists (former Dreams axe man Bob Mann and New York session guitarist Jerry Friedman) along with renowned Motown session bassist Bob Babbitt (a member of the Motown studio rhythm section, the Funk Brothers, from 1966 to 1972) and Cuban conguero Carlos “Patato” Valdes, a longstanding member of Mann’s band since the late ’50s. The secret weapon in the band remained saxophonist David “Fathead” Newman, whose bold tenor sax work added to the earthy charm of the Ray Charles band from 1954 to 1966. Rounded out by guitarist Mann, stalwart Pat Rebillot on keyboards, and Andrew Smith on drums, this special edition of the Herbie Mann Group thrilled the Carnegie Hall audience with funk oriented material from the flutist’s best-selling 1971 album Push Push, along with a few surprises thrown in. The flutist opens his June 30th set with the title track of Push Push. With the interlocking guitars of Friedman’s chording and Bob Mann’s wah-wah inflected single note lines setting a requisitely funky tone and drummer Smith locking in with bassist Babbitt and Patato’s Afro-Cuban pulse, Mann soars freely over the top on an extended flute solo. Newman then enters with his potent tenor playing, lending some grit to this soulful jam. A highlight of this infectious Afro-Cuban flavored funk-rock crossover number is the spirited breakdown between Mann’s flute and Valdes’ congas near the end of the piece. The ensemble then slides into a soothing instrumental rendition of the Jackson 5 hit single from 1971, “Never Can Say Goodbye.” Taken as a ballad, this mellow number (which also appeared on Mann’s Push Push) might be considered a precursor of the smooth jazz movement which would emerge more than a decade later. Indian Rhythms Book/CD-Rom with Pete Lockett $23.7 Dispelling the mystery and simplifying the complexity of Southern India's classic Carnatic rhythmic system, Indian Rhythms for Drumset is the first book of its kind to apply authentic Indian rhythms to the modern drumset. Written by world-class percussionist and world drumming expert Pete Lockett, the book provides a clear explanation of Indian rhythms and counting systems and gives players a step-by-step resource for adapting and successfully incorporating these concepts into their playing. The book includes a CD that contains easy-to-access MP3 files with Lockett's demonstrations of nearly 200 exercises from the book and also features three play-along tracks mixed both with and without drums.Indian Rhythms for Drumset first explains the history and use of traditional Indian vocal syllables known as solkattu or konnakol to count irregular rhythmic groupings. The book then covers the South-Indian rhythmic approach in particular detail, featuring topics such as phrase development, groove concepts, syncopation, rhythmic modulations, solo concepts and intricate stickings that can be applied to jazz, rock, funk and many other contemporary musical styles. Although the book's exercises are aimed specifically at drumset players, the concepts, analysis, rhythmic systems and explanations of the Indian rhythmic material are also relevant to all types of drummers as well as percussionists, composers, and other instrumentalists. |

Inner City Blues $11.99 The story behind Grover Washington, Jr.’s first session date as a leader revolves around a sheer coincidence of being in the right place at the right time. The truth is, the date for Creed Taylor’s Kudu imprint was supposed to feature Hank Crawford in the soloist’s chair. Crawford couldn’t make the date and longtime sideman Washington got the nod. His being closely affiliated with organists Charles Earland and Johnny Hammond didn’t hurt, and his alto and tenor saxophones’ tone was instantly noticeable for both its song-like quality and Washington’s unique ability to dig deep into R&B territory for his expression of feeling. Released in 1971, produced by Taylor, and arranged and orchestrated by Bob James, the list of players in this band is equally impressive: James played Fender Rhodes, there’s Richard Tee on organ, bassist Ron Carter, drummer Idris Muhammad, then-new guitarist Eric Gale, percussionist Airto Moreira, Thad Jones and Eugene Young on trumpets, trombonist Wayne Andre, and baritone saxophonist Don Ashworth. James also added a violin section and a small vocal chorus on certain tracks.Inner City Blues kicks off with its title track, a burning version of the Marvin Gaye tune with Washington lending a heft and depth to it that reveals the sophistication of Gaye’s original. From Airto’s hand drums and the hi hat whispers of Muhammad to the chunky wah-wah guitar vamp and a funky bassline by Carter, it becomes clear that Washington’s methods of deep soul articulation on his horn extend into the heart of this mix. James decorated his charts with subtle organ flourishes and his piano, but this is early jazz-funk at best. While Miles Davis was abstracting jazz on the margins, Washington and his cohorts were keeping the music in the street, in the barroom, on the radio, and in the nightclubs and bowling alleys. The tune was a hit at a time when fusion was becoming widespread; free jazz from both sides of the Atlantic was considering itself the new standard bearer… |
