One camp says that teachers need to guide you, measure your progress, and to just be a teacher. The other says that You miss the freedom of choice and discovery if you tie yourself in a formal teacher. Well, I say both groups have good points and bad points, this article I'll take a look at just a few of them.
I admit up front that I started with a teacher. I spent the first two and a half years under the care of a fine classical instructor. What gave me a solid understanding and intermediate guitar skills to go along with it. It also means that I access my current ability to not recognize the formative years. And for me and my play, they were great years.
However, not all the guitarists' experiences with teachers are useful as mine. There are bad teachers out there who can quickly sink passionate students in a quagmire no history and misdirecting practice. A teacher must be willing to listen to students and shape the lessons so that students get where they want to go. While it is true that there are fundamentals that must be learned regardless of how distasteful the student thinks of them, it is also true that each session should feed musical interests of students.
The self-taught musician was in no danger of smothering. For them the world is waiting to be conquered guitar. Full of enthusiasm and passion, the fretboard and music starts playing field unfold before a relentless assault. However, there are also wrong turns and dead ends that can waste time and fail. A good Teachers may have contributed to avoid such pitfalls, but the self-taught learning from mistakes as well as success. If they are talented, students find a good way of guitar. Finding a way in which the structure of music and the guitar as an instrument is thoroughly presented is essential. Then, after the matrix of the guitar is actually understood or even recognized, the freedom of being self-taught and the passion of the creative individual expression really starts to get handle.
