It doesn’t matter whether he’s an accountant or a cowboy, there are some things every man wants. Whether he’ll ever use them or not is another matter, but if he doesn’t have them, he wants them. What are these things and why do men want them.

The same goes for less expensive things we can all afford. Take the dreadnought acoustic guitar, for example. Perhaps only one out of ten of them gets played properly while the rest get their strings plucked once or twice and then are retired to the closet. Quality guitars are fantasy fulfillment for the rock star in us all.
Then there’s the mountain bike. Other than a bicycle messenger, what man who lives in the city really needs all the gears you get on a Schwinn mountain bike? That doesn’t stop them from being sold, though. Most of them are sold to men who dream about needing 24 gears. There’s nothing wrong with that, though, especially if they take the bike out for a ride once in awhile. The important thing is not how badly you need the gears, but how nice it is to know they are there.
All a man needs is an excuse and he’ll run out and buy a homelite chainsaw, even if it’s just to cut a few twigs off a tree in the yard. Men love everything about chainsaws. They love the feel of them, the sound of them and the way they effortlessly cut through wood.
Who can blame us for indulging ourselves once in awhile? Sometimes our ‘inner man’ needs to express himself. So what if the macho machine you bought rarely sees the light of day. Just knowing it’s there for you feels good and maybe that’s all we need from it.

How to Choose the Best Acoustic Guitar Strings
When you learn to play the guitar, you’ll discover how important it is to know how to select the best acoustic guitar strings for your instrument. It can be pretty confusing, and there are a large number of guitar strings that come in several gauges and alloys. When you change the strings on your acoustic guitar, you’re ensuring that the guitar will sound its best.
New strings also provide a wonderful rich and bright quality that you may not realize has gradually disappeared as the old strings have worn. Consequently, some acoustic guitarists will replace their strings quite frequently. When faced with the task of buying new strings, here are some things to consider.
The Gauge – Basically, the gauge defines how heavy the string is. Whether you want a heavy or light string will depend on the sound quality you wish to achieve. In other words, a heavy gauge provides a stronger sound and will often sustain the note more effectively.
On the other hand, a lighter gauge offers more flexibility; allowing you to bend a note. Moreover, lighter strings place less stress on the neck of the instrument. Therefore, if you have an old or fragile guitar, a light gauge is probably the best option for you.
Type of Alloy - There are three principal types of alloy: bronze (the most popular), nickel and steel. However, these are divided into subcategories. In other words, there are two types of bronze alloy known as phosphor and 80/20. Obviously, this indicates the chemical mix, which affects the sound of the guitar.
A phosphor bronze alloy is made from copper and has a small percentage of tin. These strings are considered to be longer lasting and some guitarists believe them to have a richer sound.
The 80/20, however, is made from 80% copper and 20% zinc (hence the name). These strings have an incredibly bright sound when they are new, but they tend to lose their luster faster than phosphor strings. Therefore, they are popular among those who like to change strings frequently.
Specialist Strings – As well as the traditional acoustic strings, there is a multitude of specialist strings, which are all designed to improve the durability, sound or playability of the string. Usually, specialist strings are coated in a chemical bond, which improves sound quality and protects the string from wear and tear.
Of course, these strings will come with a higher price tag. Whether they are worth it or not is open to debate. Some guitarists believe that they are indeed worth the extra money, whereas others are happy to continue using the more traditional strings. If you are intrigued by specialist strings and can afford to experiment with them, then it is certainly worth seeing what is on offer.
Unfortunately, there is no easy answer to the question “which are the best acoustic guitar strings?” because it will largely depend on personal preference. It is advisable to experiment with different gauges, alloys and manufacturers until you find the strings that produce a sound that you love and that suit your needs.

Which guitar strings are best: Light/Medium Gauge?
I am an amateur guitarist and have picked up a Yamaha F310P Acoustic guitar with light gauge strings. But i am not happy as the is not so rich and echoes a lot. My friend (a good guitarist) suggests that i should shift to medium gauge strings. Is it advisable to do so? Will the sound be better in Medium gauge strings? (doesn’t matter if it hurts my fingers) Any help from an experienced guitarist will be much appreciable.
Yes. I have a beautiful Martin accoustic. Were talking thousands of dollars here. When the factory strings wore out, I put a lighter gauge set on it. The tone was terrible!!! I was sweating because again, we are talking a big chunk o’ change here! So I put medium gauge strings on it, and it sounded better. Also try playing the strings that are on it for a while. It takes time before new strings stabilize enough to get the most tone out of them.

And Now That I’m in Your Shadow $14.98 Damien Jurado’s seventh full-length — and God knows how many singles, EPs and compilation cuts — walks quietly in the shadow of 2005′s On My Way to Absence. While the soft approach is his and his band’s modus operandi, the subtle differences from recording to recording are, nonetheless, pronounced, Whereas On My Way to Absence was adorned with simple acoustic guitars and framed in everything from strings and piano, there were also some slow, light rock & roll tracks, where the band plugged in. Not so here on And Now That I’m in Your Shadow. Drums only appear on a couple of cuts, and electric guitars are almost entirely absent. Sound effects, big echo chambers, and reverb grace “Montesano,” and one or two other tracks, but mostly, it’s just Jurado with his acoustic guitar, a piano, and some strings. The feel is late night, on the edge of quiet, and full of pathos. Once upon a time he refrained from writing confessional material; his songs are drenched in it now, whether metaphorical or not. Jurado’s storytelling skills, however, have become more sophisticated and multi-dimensional than they were before. Check “Denton, Texas,” the title track, the solo acoustic “Shannon Rhodes,” and “Gas Station.” The slow country stroll of “There Goes Your Man,” and the drum machine-driven acoustic cut “What Were the Chances,” a duet with Jenna Conrad. Oh yeah, it’s quiet, mopey and distinct: Jurado’s way of writing distills the complicated notions of the heart into images or tiny actions: a breath, a glance, a hand moving from one place to the next on the human body, automobiles in the parking lots of truck stops. Those players — Jan Bang, Evan Parker, John Tilbury, Dai Fujikura, Erik Honor? , Otoma Yoshide, and Christian Fennesz among them — created airy, often gently dissonant structures for Sylvian’s lyrics and melodic ideas. Died in the Wool (MANAFON Variations) re-employs these players (with some new ones) in the considerable reworking of five of MANAFON’s compositions. There are also six new songs that include unused outtakes, and two poems by Emily Dickinson set to music and sung by Sylvian. The new music here relies heavily on Sylvian’s association with Fujikura: he composed, arranged, and conducted chamber strings that are prevalent. Where MANAFON’s “Small Metal Gods” was orchestrated by acoustic guitar, laptop, electronics, bass, and cello, this one employs a string quartet that provides greatly expanded harmonics, which underscore the desolate power in Sylvian’s lyrics. On “Snow White in Appalachia,” strings shift the tune’s original sonic gears into diffused, vaporous sonorities. First Light [Bonus Track] $10.98 Never one to take lyricism for granted, trumpeter and composer Freddie Hubbard entered Creed Taylor’s studio for the third time in 1974 with the express purpose of making a record radically different from anything he’d cut before; he was looking for it to use electricity and to be out of the soul-jazz mold, but was also more ambitious and wanted to push that envelope and himself. Taylor and Hubbard assembled a band that included Herbie Hancock on Rhodes, guitarists Eric Gale and George Benson, bassist Ron Carter, Jack DeJohnette on drums, Airto Moreira on percussion, and Richard Wyands on acoustic piano to back him. The band was also supported by the truly ethereal and adventurous string arrangements of Don Sebesky (a first for Hubbard). The result is a masterpiece of textured sound, gorgeously far-flung charts, sweet, tight grooves, a subtle mystic feel, and some of Hubbard’s most exciting playing ever. The title track — there are two versions here, the alternate is almost five minute longer than the master — and Hubbard’s ingenious read of Paul and Linda McCartney’s “Uncle Albert/ Admiral Halsey,” as well as Leonard Bernstein’s “Lonely Town,” are so in the pocket that they bleed soul. Benson’s uncharacteristically edgy guitar playing juxtaposed against Hubbard’s warm tone, and Hancock’s beautifully modal Rhodes lines that are drenched with big, open, minor chord voicings, are simply made more illustrious and graceful by Sebesky’s strings.
