A third, shadow member, DJ Hi-Tek, supplies much of the music, making wonderfully outlandish decisions like sampling Smile.dk? s sugary hit ? Butterfly? for the massive ? Enter the Ninja,? a hypnotic motivational track that should pump up any given mutant before they enter the ring. When ? Scopie? – this album is chock-full of NSFW South African slang — samples ? Short Dick Man,? it? s clever, and borrowing from the Bronski Beat for the epic sex track ? ’80s Soul Gold $19.99 Hip-O Records, the reissue arm of the major label Universal, often licenses tracks from other record companies to broaden the selections on its compilation albums. But in assembling ’80s Soul Gold, an entry in Hip-O’s discount-priced series of double-CD collections, compilation producer Harry Weinger must have felt that such borrowings were unnecessary. After all, Universal, a company formed by the merger of MCA and PolyGram, already has deep holdings in soul music, starting with the Motown catalog and including MCA itself, which was a big player on the R&B scene in the ’80s. The 30-track album Weinger has compiled cannot be called a greatest soul hits of the decade exactly. It contains only three songs that were among Billboard magazine’s 25 biggest R&B records of the ’80s — the Dazz Band’s “Let It Whip,” Smokey Robinson’s “Being with You,” and Rockwell’s “Somebody’s Watching Me.” But it is hardly lacking in hits. Every track but one reached the R&B Top Ten (the exception, Billy Preston and Syreeta’s “With You I’m Born Again,” hit the Top Ten of the pop and adult contemporary charts), and 16 — more than half — went to number one. As such, the album provides a good sense of what R&B music sounded like in the decade. That sense is enhanced by Weinger’s wise decision to sequence the album in roughly chronological order. The ’80s was a transitional decade for R&B (as is every decade, come to think of it), and the beats that were moving listeners early on were replaced by other ones as time went on. By the end of the second disc, one can hear hip-hop coming on with the cutups and James Brown sampling of Vanessa Williams’ “The Right Stuff” and the very ’90s-like sound of Guy’s “I Like,” the final track. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi

((Un)) [Bonus Tracks] $10.99 Dan Black was one of the main proponents of the ? wonky pop? scene in late 2000s, that is, unabashedly ? pop? but with some brains and musical invention, and not just slavish re-creations of current musical trends designed to get your songs in the charts. His early singles (which are collected here on his debut album) were strutting, ultra-hooky songs that mixed up hip-hop, rock, funk, and pop into a very appealing sound fronted by Black? s smooth and insistent vocals. ? Yours? and ? Alone? are both very inventive tracks, and easy-to-digest songs that fans of radio pop could get into, “Symphonies,” which is his high point as an artist so far, slows things down and wraps Black? s voice in a beautiful string sample, and shows he can deliver some real emotion. In other words, Black? s singles are a perfect manifestation of wonky pop. ((Un)) works almost as well. The singles are the best tracks, but there is plenty of competition. The rocking, dancefloor filler “Pump My Pumps,” the stuttering, fake hip-hop jam “I Love Life,” and the fun and huge-sounding “U + Me =” all come very close to dethroning the previously released singles for top honors. 06:21:03:11 Up Evil $11.99 The first of two releases for Front 242 in 1993, 06:21:03:11 Up Evil (aka F*ck Up Evil) found the foursome rebounding from the somewhat sterile Tyranny (For You) with a varied, vicious assault. Incorporating guitar noise more readily than ever before, but most often chopped up and heavily treated for the band’s own particular purposes, 06:21:03:11 Up Evil contains some of the band’s most virulent, explosive songs. All titles are one-word long, simple, and straightforward, with names like “Flag,” “Mutilate,” and “Crapage.” There’s almost a straight-up rock feel to a number of tracks as well, as the drumming on “Waste” and the quite anthemic “Melt” shows. It’s hardly Front 242′s grunge move, though — Jean-Luc de Meyer and the generally little-heard Richard 23 may have a more openly emotional rasp and rage in their voices, especially de Meyer, but the relentless beat of industrial/electronic body music lives on. Leadoff single “Religion” continues the group’s winning vein on that front, feedback roars and a huge beat setting an edgy pace before a body slam of a chorus kicks in, de Meyer raging over the top, “Let me burn you down!” The winning secret of the album is that a fair number of songs also demonstrate a careful subtlety, as with the sly mood-setting of “Skin,” with its chopped-up electro/hip-hop beats providing the propulsion behind desperate whispers and ominous synth buzzes. The immediately following “Motion” provides an even more upfront blend of styles, with a quiet start and gentle singing suddenly shifting into a pounding call-to-arms percussion attack, all while de Meyer chants, “progress, progress!” again and again. Other successes in this vein include the strange prettiness of “Stratoscape,” featuring a low, purring bassline and crisp beats offset against soft keyboard sparkles and chimes, and “Fuel,” which includes minimal ambient buzz, more upfront dance/beat chaos, and varying combinations of the two. ~ Ned Raggett, Rovi

1+1 $14.98 Beyond category or idiom, audacious in its very idea, Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter perform a little over an hour of spontaneous improvised duets for grand piano and soprano sax. That’s all — no synthesizers, no rhythm sections, just wistful, introspective, elevated musings between two erudite old friends that must have made the accountants at PolyGram reach for their Mylanta. Hancock’s piano is long on complex harmonies of the most cerebral sort, occasionally breaking out into a few agitated passages of dissonance. His technique in great shape, Shorter responds with long-limbed melodies, darting responses to Hancock’s lashings, and occasional painful outcries of emotion. The leadoff track, “Meridianne — A Wood Sylph,” clearly takes off from a base of Satie to set the reflective mood for nearly the whole CD; only the final, brief “Hale-Bopp, Hip-Hop” offers a hint of comic relief. All of the tunes, save for Michiel Borstlap’s “Memory of Enchantment,” are Hancock or Shorter originals; some, like Hancock’s “Joanna’s Theme” (from the film Death Wish) and Shorter’s “Diana,” date back to the ’70s. As avidly as this music was awaited and as wildly as it was acclaimed by critics, it doesn’t really touch the emotions as deeply as the best of the pair’s work together and apart. 1, 2, To the Bass $11.98 Stanley Clarke is without doubt a phenomenally talented bassist but has not done much to showcase this ability on his own recordings since the late ’70s. You can chalk that up mostly to Clarke’s propensity for trite, pop-oriented material that does little to illuminate his great technical command of the instrument or to engage the listener either melodically or lyrically. 1, 2, to the Bass is a step in the right direction with a more jazz-oriented feel and some interesting guest appearances. Rapper Q-Tip gets things off to a nice start on the title track which reimagines ’90s hip-hop jazz as “quiet storm” R&B. “Simply Said” is reminiscent of Sting’s more fusion-style originals with flutist Hubert Laws on a nice melodic hook. There is also an inspired reworking of the R&B classic “Where Is the Love” featuring Glenn Lewis and Amel Larrieux. Later on, if “Los Caballos (The Horses)” sounds a little too much like Madonna’s “Borderline,” and Oprah Winfrey’s reading of Maya Angelou’s “I Shall Not Be Moved” seems a bit out of place on an album that includes a song titled “Just Cruzin’,” there’s at least the “Rock It”-styled electro-disco-funk of “Bout the Bass.” And don’t forget the monstrous “freak” funk cover of “Hair” that almost redeems everything guitarist Joe Satriani has ever done. 1999 $9.99 With Dirty Mind, Prince had established a wild fusion of funk, rock, new wave, and soul that signaled he was an original, maverick talent, but it failed to win him a large audience. After delivering the sound-alike album, Controversy, Prince revamped his sound and delivered the double album 1999. Where his earlier albums had been a fusion of organic and electronic sounds, 1999 was constructed almost entirely on synthesizers by Prince himself. Naturally, the effect was slightly more mechanical and robotic than his previous work and strongly recalled the electro-funk experiments of several underground funk and hip-hop artists at the time. Prince had also constructed an album dominated by computer funk, but he didn’t simply rely on the extended instrumental grooves to carry the album — he didn’t have to when his songwriting was improving by leaps and bounds. The first side of the record contained all of the hit singles, and, unsurprisingly, they were the ones that contained the least amount of electronics. “1999″ parties to the apocalypse with a P-Funk groove much tighter than anything George Clinton ever did, “Little Red Corvette” is pure pop, and “Delirious” takes rockabilly riffs into the computer age. After that opening salvo, all the rules go out the window — “Let’s Pretend We’re Married” is a salacious extended lust letter, “Free” is an elegiac anthem, “All the Critics Love U in New York” is a vicious attack at hipsters, and “Lady Cab Driver,” with its notorious bridge, is the culmination of all of his sexual fantasies.
