The Jewish State: The Struggle for Israel's Soul

The Jewish State: The Struggle for Israel’s Soul

$18

“In what may be the most controversial book on Zionism and Israel published in the last twenty years, Yoram Hazony graphically portrays the cultural and political revolt against Israel’s status as the Jewish state. Examining ideological trends in academia, literature, media, law, the armed forces, and the foreign policy establishment, Hazony contends that Israelis are preparing themselves for the final break with the Jewish past and the Jewish future. In a dramatic new reading of Israeli history, Hazony uncovers the story of how Martin Buber, Gershom Scholem, Hannah Arendt, and other German-Jewish intellectuals bitterly fought against the establishment of Israel, and later used the Hebrew University as a base for deposing David Ben-Gurion and discrediting Labor Zionism. The Jewish State is a must-read for anyone concerned with Israel’s present and future.”

A Short History of the Jewish People: From Legendary Times to Modern Statehood

A Short History of the Jewish People: From Legendary Times to Modern Statehood

$19.99

“Where did the Jews come from? How did they retain their strong sense of community through centuries of dispersion? How have the Jews of the present, with their proud ethnic identity and thriving national home, emerged out of the downtrodden Jews of the past? Such questions arise naturally in the minds of anyone contemplating the long history of Jewish people. In one concise, authoritative volume, A Short History of the Jewish People provides insights and answers.> This sweeping and highly informative work presents the major geographical, cultural, and political forces that have determined the course of Jewish history, introducing the many individuals, both religious and secular, who have shaped the character, mindset, and prospects of the Jewish people. Organized chronologically, the narrative follows the Jewish experience from legendary times to the peace agreements currently being negotiated in the Middle East. And, to give this overview an international and timely perspective, Raymond P. Scheindlin focuses his study on the pivotal events and dominant communities within each historical period.> Written by a respected Hebrew scholar, cultural historian, noted author, and rabbi, A Short History of the Jewish People carefully describes the story of a people as varied as the many cultures in which they have lived. Including detailed maps and stirring photos, as well as timelines and sidebars, this pioneering work is a valuable resource for anyone broadly curious about the Jewish people.”

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Jewish Encyclopedia was an encyclopedia originally published in New York between 1901 and 1906 by Funk and Wagnalls. It contained over 15,000 articles in 12 volumes on the history and thencurrent state of Judaism and the Jews as of 1901. It is now a public domain resource. Jenny Mendelsohn, of University of Toronto Libraries, in an online guide to major sources of information about Jews and Judaism, writes of this work, Although published in the early 1900s, this was a work highly regarded for its scholarship. Much of the material is still of value to researchers in Jewish History. Rabbi Joshua L. Segal of the Reform movement called it a remarkable piece of Jewish scholarship and added, For events prior to 1900, it is considered to offer a level of scholarship superior to either of the more recent Jewish Encyclopedias written in English. Making of Jewish Intelligentsia

Making of Jewish Intelligentsia

$176.84

By and large, the books on Jewish demography and social relations are in short supply. It is even more true as to research dealing with the tiny Jewish communities in Eastern and South Central Europe, where either inaccessibility of the archives during the Soviet era or lack of scholarly tradition have impeded such studies for decades. This book provides the fresh gaze into Jewish history from the perspective of modern times and culture. It focuses on the social mobility of Estonian and Slovenian Jewish intelligentsia and doing that draws on the unique archival sources. Jews and education presents itself as one of the main motifs and thrust in Jewish culture during the Modern Era. Recurrently struggling against the various odds in history, many Jews availed themselves of a specific modus operandi early schooling and striving for educational excellence in higher learning institutions either to accomplish career related pursuits or find both social and political acceptance among the host societies. The study should have a positive value for the broad circle of people and academics alike who are interested in remarkable facets of Jewish history and European history in general. “>In her quest to discover the true nature of the question, “Who is a Jew?” author Paula Clayman> emphatically unravels many exciting historical facets while tracing biblical lineages and exposing> their valuable contributions.> My Sons Are Jewish takes you on a journey through the Old Testament and beyond, following the> story of the Jews as they carried forth the blessing of Abraham to all the people of the world.> Through revisiting the ancient text of the Bible and tracing the steps of the Jews, an unbroken cord> is exposed; a cord that conveyed much more than their ancient traditions and heritage. The cord> brought forth the religion given to humankind, which foreshadowed all that was to be, and a promise> of inheritance to all who choose to receive–including Jews who return to their roots.> You will better understand Jewish history and how Christianity, rather than being a “new” religion, is> a continuation of the religion of the Jews as given by God. “Have you ever used the word, “Kosher,” or “Klutz,” or “schlep,” or chatchke”? Of course you have, and we hear them so often that I bet you think they are English. Well guess what, they’re Jewish (or Yiddish if you prefer), and they are not only indispensable (can you imagine life without them?), but they tell us a lot about the Jewish culture, the Jewish mind, and the Jewish funny bone. In this book you will discover the origin and meaning of Jewish words, and learn about Jewish customs, the Jewish Festivals, Jewish foods (including recipes), and just about everything else Jewish — from a certified Brooklyn-born Jew. The adorable illustrations are by my husband, Robert, who was not born Jewish, but we adopted him. Anyone who reads this book, and eats bagels and chicken soup, will be adopted into the Jewish family.”

Jewish Holiday Style

Jewish Holiday Style

$19.25

At last — the Jewish holidays transformed into exquisite celebrations, graced with sublime chic and elegant ease for the contemporary Jewish reader. Combining the flair of Martha Stewart with the warmth and accessibility of a delightful neighbor, Rita Milos Brownstein breathes new life into traditional Jewish holiday celebrations. Entertaining in high style creates marvelous holiday memories for your family, your friends, and yourself. For each of the ten major holidays, Brownstein offers suggestions for creative projects that will bring the whole family together and mouth-watering menus that make it effortless to prepare festivities of true material and spiritual splendor. With more than 85 full-color photographs and easy-to-follow step-by-step illustrations, this captivating book will motivate you to explore your Jewish heritage and use your imagination to make it your own. Jewish Holiday Style is packed with dazzling and inspiring ideas. For Rosh Hashanah, host a honey-tasting party to celebrate the sweetness of a new year. If you love the ocean, observe Sukkot in a sukkah with a seaside motif — even if you live in the cornfields of the Midwest. Make your own Chanukah menorahs — try a simple cruse of oil that reflects the miracle of the oil in the Holy Temple, or an elaborate metalworked candelabra that is sure to become a family heirloom. For the Passover table, create personalized pillows for your guests, which.will allow them to recline like the royalty of old while you serve a lavish yet simple-to-prepare feast. As part of this eye-opening tour through the Jewish calendar, Brownstein also highlights the historical origins and religious importance of each major holiday with a delightful essay that brings ancient rituals into the modern day. Think of the fast of Yom Kippur, for instance, as a day spa for the soul…the too rare opportunity to get in touch with the things that really matter. Purim is the definitive holiday of joy and merriment, commemorating a bright moment in the often somber history of the Jewish people. On Shabbat, appreciate that you are joining the wave of Jews who are kindling their candles as the sun falls, working its way around the world. At once a handbook of creative ideas and a primer on the spiritual significance of the Jewish holidays, Jewish Holiday Style is the first lifestyle book to address these all-important rituals and ceremonies, an elegantly designed volume that blends sensational crafts and delectable cooking with the richness of Judaism’s 3,300-year-old tradition. Bursting with fresh ideas and exciting new looks, here, finally, is the book you’ve been waiting for. Let the holiday celebrations begin!

Light Jewish Holiday Desserts

Light Jewish Holiday Desserts

When most people think of Jewish desserts, the same old rugelach, babka, and stale macaroons come to mind. This book proves that Jewish baking has much more to offer, including cookies, Charlottes, turnovers, loaf cakes, layer cakes, Bundt cakes, Napoleons, and tarts. Most Jewish desserts are also laden with fat, but Penny shows you, with her absolutely delicious recipes, how to cut the fat by as much as 75 percent in some cases—without sacrificing any of the taste. Jewish holidays are steeped in culture and tradition, so the chapters are organized by holiday and explain why certain foods and recipes are significant. Some recipes, though, are just fun, like the Chocolate Nut Roulade that can be shaped to look like a Torah for Simkat Torah. For Passover (Pesach), very strict guidelines must be followed, like no consumption of wheat flour, so Penny offers a Fresh Strawberry Torte with a crust made from ground matzoh. Many of these recipes are so delicious, home cooks will want to prepare them year round. But come high holidays, these recipes are sure to impress family and friends. PENNY WANTUCK EISENBERG has been working as a caterer and cooking instructor for over ten years. Her specialties include desserts, bread making, Jewish cooking and special diets. She is a graduate of Boston University and North Bennet Street Industrial School. A native of Long Island, she now lives in Charlotte, North Carolina with her family.

Jewish Quota

Jewish Quota

$92.4

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Jewish quota was a percentage that limited the number of Jews in various establishments. In particular, in 19th and 20th centuries some countries had Jewish quotas for higher education, a special case of Numerus clausus. Jewish educational quotas could be statewide law or adopted only in certain institutions, often unofficially. The limitation took the form of total prohibition of Jewish students, or of limiting the number of Jewish students so that their share in the students population would not be larger than their share in the general population. In some establishments, the Jewish quota placed a limit on growth rather than set a fixed level of participation to be achieved. Countries with a history of antisemitism, such as Germany and Hungary, had particularly strict quotas. No matter how far from home we go, refining our palates, leaving behind family cooking for more sophisticated fare, trading up from iceberg lettuce to arugula, from meatloaf to paté, from Velveeta to brie, we all have a special place in our hearts-and our stomachs-for our families’ deliciously basic, special home recipes. Born of the culinary traditions of the two very different sides of actress Pamela Hensley Vincent’s Jewish-American family and her husband Duke Vincent’s Italian-American background, The Jewish-Sicilian Cookbook recaptures, with charm, humor, and tasty and do-able recipes, the gastronomic nostalgia of two families that could be very much like any of our own. The sixty-four recipes in this charmingly appointed cookbook range from quick salads to hearty stews and run the gamut from typically Jewish (Yetta’s chicken soup and latkes) to the quintessentially Italian (Duke’s Special Spaghetti). Some of the recipes represent the best of traditional modern American food, such as Manny’s Hamburgers and Jack’s Chef Salad, radiating a special feeling of mid-century cooking and eating, with a Fifties sensibility that goes down as deliciously well today it it did then. The common ground of all family food traditions is Food is Love, and this principle is irresistibly at play as Pamela Vincent recounts heartfelt anecdotes, describing fond memories of meals with loved ones, while sharing her favorite family recipes with all the enthusiasm of a favorite cousin presenting a cherished recipe on a much used recipe card. From a predawn breakfast of buttered matzoh and coffee with her grandfather to pasta night with Duke, The Jewish-Sicilian Cookbook will inspire readers to revisit fond food memories of their own as well as create new ones.

The rich and varied history of the Jewish people is reflected in the glorious diversity of their food and cooking. This awe-inspiring volume takes you on a fascinating journey through the evolution of a cuisine that is inexorably linked to the history and geography of its people, and in particular to the culinary traditions of the Eastern European countries, undeniably the foundation of so many classic Jewish dishes today. This definitive illustrated guide includes recipes from the many European, Middle Eastern, North African and American countries rich in Jewish heritage, in particular the Eastern European countries of Russia, Poland, the Ukraine, Germany, Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Romania, Bulgaria and the East Adriatic. An enthralling introduction traces the evolution of this well-travelled fare, and presents a veritable tapestry of recipes derived from a tradition of food sharing, festivals and the resourceful use of simple, local ingredients. An easy-to-follow chapter on the essentials of kashrut and kosher cooking explains the significance of the different foods, and the appropriate ways to prepare and eat them. Many recipes are cross-cultural fusions, and the reader is often given the option of using non-traditional ingredients or trying out non-kosher alternatives.Over 400 recipes then offer an astonishing array of flavourful dishes: irresistible appetizers and dips, hearty soups and stews; meat, poultry and fish; breads, rice and grain dishes; gloriously rich pastries and sweet bakes. Create classics such as Chicken Kiev, Hungarian Goulash and Apple Strudel; sample Ashkenazi geflite fish, Libyan spicy pumpkin dip, lightly-spiced African specialities such as Moroccan grilled fish brochettes; and enjoy New York deli favourites such as the definitive coleslaw or whitefish salad with toasted bagels.Every recipe has been tested and adapted to suit the modern kitchen, and more than 1400 colour photographs ensure the book is both an inspiration to follow and easy to use. Brimming with flavour and variety, this is a cookbook that will inform, surprise and delight.

2005 IACP Award Finalist – International Category: The Le Cordon Bleu Award Jewish cooking is the daily expression of not only religious beliefs, but a cultural and family history. The recipes passed from one generation to another tell their own story of a family’s past. An historically peripatetic people, Jewish communities can be found in every corner of the globe. Obliged by religion to adhere to the dietary laws of kashrut, Jewish cooks have adapted local cuisines to reflect their culture. When recreating an old recipe in a new land, they have worked with the available ingredients to produce dishes that unite religion with necessity, and past with present. Delicious hybrids, these dishes tell their own tale of Jewish families, their history and their culture. The stories of nine Jewish families appear through the book. They tell of travel across continents; family celebrations; reunions and separations; war and peace. Each story is accompanied by a recipe and, among others, reveal the dishes cooked by Cuban Jews in Miami, Australians in Manchester, and Moroccans in Israel. A delicious, international fusion cuisine, food from the worldwide Jewish kitchen is as diverse as its cultural heritage.

Jewish Answers to Jewish Questions Concerning the Messiahship of Jesus

Jewish Answers to Jewish Questions Concerning the Messiahship of Jesus

$10.99

“This book will explore the Old Testament roots of Christianity and how that Judaism and Christianity are inherently the same; this book expounds the well-founded connection to Jesus and the ancient prophetic writings. Prophecy is one of the single-most powerful pieces of evidence of the supernatural workings of God on earth and hence a focal point for establishing the Messiahship of Jesus. This book is essential for any non-believer seeking a case for why he or she should believe that Jesus died, was resurrected, and that He is ultimately the Savior of our souls. In addition, the knowledge and understanding that can be gained are not just relevant for non-believers, but the book is also a powerful tool for Christians who don’t know everything there is to know about Messianic prophecy. When Christians also understand the true potency of their own faith, they are better able to teach Christ to others. The author is a recent college graduate having earned his BS in Biology from Valdosta State University in 2005. His life in serving God began at the age of 13 at which time he personally experienced the life-changing power of Christ, and hence, the purpose-filled journey began. Now he hopes to help others to experience the miraculous power of Jesus that he experienced. In relation to the writing of this book, the inspiration was born out of a love for the Jewish people and a desire to see all of God’s lost sheep saved. In addition, he also hopes to enlighten everyday Christians making them more aware of the power of the surety of their hope in Christ. He currently resides in the southeastern United States.”

Identity Politics on the Israeli Screen

Identity Politics on the Israeli Screen

$42.9

The struggle to forge a collective national identity at the expense of competing plural identities has preoccupied Israeli society since the founding of the state of Israel. In this book, Yosefa Loshitzky explores how major Israeli films of the 1980s and 1990s have contributed significantly to the process of identity formation by reflecting, projecting, and constructing debates around Israeli national identity. Loshitzky focuses on three major foundational sites of the struggle over Israeli identity: the Holocaust, the question of the Orient, and the socalled (in an ironic historical twist of the Jewish question ) Palestinian question. The films she discusses raise fundamental questions about the identity of Jewish Holocaust survivors and their children (the second generation ), Jewish immigrants from Muslim countries or Mizrahim (particularly the second generation of Israeli Mizrahim), and Palestinians. Recognizing that victimhood marks all the identities represented in the films under discussion, Loshitzky does not treat each identity group as a separate and coherent entity, but rather attempts to see the conflation, interplay, and conflict among them. Jewish Russians: Upheavals in a Moscow Synagogue

Jewish Russians: Upheavals in a Moscow Synagogue

$44.37

The prevalence of antiSemitism in Russia is well known, but the issue of race within the Jewish community has rarely been discussed explicitly. Combining ethnography with archival research, Jewish Russians: Upheavals in a Moscow Synagogue documents the changing face of the historically dominant Russian Jewish community in the mid1990s. Sascha Goluboff focuses on a Moscow synagogue, now comprising individuals from radically different cultures and backgrounds, as a nexus from which to explore issues of identity creation and negotiation. Following the rapid rise of this transnational congregationheaded by a Western rabbi and consisting of Jews from Georgia and the mountains of Azerbaijan and Dagestan, along with Bukharan Jews from Central Asiashe evaluates the process that created this diverse gathering and offers an intimate sense of individual interactions in the context of the synagogues congregation.Challenging earlier research claims that Russian and Jewish identities are mutually exclusive, Goluboff illustrates how postSoviet Jews use Russian and Jewish ethnic labels and racial categories to describe themselves. Jews at the synagogue were constantly engaged in often contradictory but always culturally meaningful processes of identity formation. Ambivalent about emerging class distinctions, Georgian, Russian, Mountain, and Bukharan Jews evaluated one another based on each groups supposed success or failure in the new market economy. Goluboff argues that postSoviet Jewry is based on perceived racial, class, and ethnic differences as they emerge within discourses of belonging to the Jewish people and the new Russian nation. The Struggle for Soviet Jewish Emigration, 1948 1967

The Struggle for Soviet Jewish Emigration, 1948 1967

$122.67

In this important new study of Soviet Jewry, Yaacov Roi examines their struggle for emigration from the establishment of the State of Israel to the outbreak of the SixDay War. Using a range of personal interviews, he explores how Jewish self awareness arose both as a result of the founding of the State of Israel and as a product of the Holocaust. Local groups developed and sustained Jewish cultural interests and their Jewish identity in the face of popular antiSemitism and Soviet policy. The author continues by analyzing the campaign conducted in the West and mobilized by the Israeli government on behalf of Soviet Jewish rights as a whole and emigration in particular. Roi convincingly argues that despite the efforts of Soviet Jewish groups to flourish in a steadfastly antiSemitic system, by 1967 most had accepted that the only way of implementing their Zionist aspirations was to emigrate to Israel. However, without the extensive groundwork carried out in the period 19481967, it is doubtful if the mass emigration of the 1970s would have been possible. Author: Roi, Yaacov Series Title: Cambridge Russian, Soviet and PostSoviet Studies Series Number: 75 Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 484 Publication Date: 2003/10/30 Language: English Dimensions: 6.00 x 9.00 x 1.08 inches

Jewish Cooking in America: Expanded Edition

Jewish Cooking in America: Expanded Edition

$39.95

“This rich tapestry of more than three centuries of Jewish cooking in America gathers together some 335 kosher recipes, old and new. They come from both Sephardic and Ashkenazic Jews who settled all over America, bringing with them a wide variety of regional flavors, changing and adapting their traditional dishes according to what was available in the new country. >What makes Jewish cooking unique is the ancient dietary laws that govern the selection, preparation, and consumption of observant Jews. Food plays a major part in rituals past and present, binding family and community. It is this theme that informs every part of Joan Nathan’s warm and lively text. >Every dish has a story-from the cholents (the long-cooked rich meat stews) and kugels (vegetable and noodle puddings) prepared in advance for the Sabbath, to the potato latkes (served with maple syrup in Vermont and goat cheese in California) and gefilte fish (made with white fish in the Midwest, salmon in the Northwest, haddock in New England, and shad in Maryland). Joan Nathan tells us how lox and bagels and Lindy’s cheesecake became household words, and how American products like Crisco, cream cheese, and Jell-O changed forever Jewish home cooking. >The recipes and stories come from every part of the U.S.A. They are seasoned with Syrian, Moroccan, Greek, German, Polish, Georgian, and Alsatian flavors, and they represent traditional foods tailored for today’s tastes as well as some of the nouvelle creations of Jewish chefs from New York to Tuscon. >When “Jewish Cooking in America” was first published in 1994, it won both the IACP / Julia Child Cookbook Award for Best Cookbook of the Year and the James Beard Award for Best Food of the Americas Cookbook. Now, more than ever, it stands firmly established as an American culinary classic.”

In a detailed historical reconstruction of the origins of Jewish political thought, the book traces the development of Zionist ideology in the years prior to Israels independence.
