How to Buy a Drum Set For a Beginner Drummer

If you’re new to percussion drums playing and serious about pursuing it, you will sooner or later want to buy a drum set – obvious choice, really. But here is where your headache starts, since when it comes to drums the sky is the limit in terms of product range. Where and how do you start buying your first percussion drums or drum set? A good basic drum set will be more than sufficient to start with; “good” and “basic” should not be mistaken for “top-notch”, though. As for any other instrument, you will probably first want to find out whether your newly acquired passion is long-lasting, so my advice is to go for a used drum set to start with. Should you one day decide that playing percussion drums is not for you after all, at least the investment was not exorbitantly high and you can always re-sell it to minimize the expenditure.

The price for a drum set may vary greatly depending on several factors (manufacturer, quality of the materials used, amount of drums and cymbals, etc.); you can find good deals for new quality sets starting at about $400 but as you progress, you will certainly want to add more equipment – and at that point there is no limit. I always recommend starting small with good quality equipment, rather than buying all possible drums and cymbals right away and eventually coming to the conclusion that it was the wrong investment to make. Besides, buying every possible drum or cymbal at once takes away all the fun that comes with slowly upgrading according to your specific skill or acquired technique!

For beginners, I recommend a basic drum set containing the following elements:

- 1 bass drum (+ pedal)

- 1 snare drum (+ stand)

- 1 tom-tom (+ stand)

- 1 ride cymbal (+ stand)

- 1 hi-hat (+ stand)

- a stool or throne

- drum sticks
