Jazz Piano Lessons Anytime, Anywhere

Jazz is music that is fun, moody and unique. However the learning process is not as easy as other kinds of music. You will need to first take jazz piano lessons to learn the jazz music fundamental theories. For beginners it is necessary for you to learn skills in reading notes, playing chords, playing by ear and other basic musical concepts.

Playing jazz is not like other music that you just need to follow the notations and you’re fine. With jazz piano, you have the freedom to interpret the song anyway you prefer. You need to improvise. You have to allow the piano express everything you have internalized: the mood, feelings, groove and rhythm. The music you make is actually a reflection of all these.

What is more, you need to know the basic principles necessary to make great music. What makes jazz music stand out is improvisation. This is not the same with most genres which require the music to be played as noted in the sheet music. So a strong foundation of fundamentals is necessary. When you start learning, it is best that you focus on the technicalities. Master them successfully if you can. The next steps will be much simpler to follow.

You need the basic skills like chords, playing by ear and reading notes. You will have a great time with improvisation if you master them. Chord progression is also a necessary skill because it is always used even in advanced jazz piano. At the same time, rhythmic feel is also a must to learn. You need this to apply groove and rhythm to the music you will play.

Jazz piano lessons can be given to all ages from the very young to the elderly. There are learning programs for all levels as well. The road to jazz playing is not straight. Jazz is interesting because of the several of roads you can take. You won’t get bored with jazz since there are many ways of playing one music.

You can play solo and bring out your feelings into your music. See how creative you can be by jamming with other jazz musicians. Playing with other jazz artists who use other instruments such as bass, drums and guitar can be fun. With all your improvisations, you can make unique sounds that will give you and your audience a good time.

You can jam with other players and gain new friends while you explore endless possibilities of music combinations. It is more common with jazz players since there are no hard and fast rules to follow. All that is required is that you combine your music and give yourselves and your audience a great time.

There are many internet jazz piano lessons to choose from. You don’t have to worry about the cost, your choice starts from free to several hundred dollars. There won’t be any conflict of schedule because you can take it anytime. You will learn a lot about your lessons as well as about yourself and put this diversity into music.

The Jazz Music

The Jazz music sensation began to rub off on other parts of the world which encourages the experimentation of melding their familiar sounds with the essence of Jazz.  In Europe’s country in the Region of France  came the Quintette Du Hot Club de France who was responsible for the making of the early “Gypsy Jazz”.The Belgian guitarist Django Reinhardt created gypsy jazz  by mixing the style of French Musette which was used in the dance halls, eastern European Folk known as Jazz Manouche, and American swing of the 1930′s. The sound was developed by instruments from the string family which are a steel string guitar, violin, and an upright bass. The atmosphere of the Jazz music is seductive with sudden unpredictable twists, and accelerating rhythms. The French artist Bireli Lagrene plays this unique music with old elements of the past.

Another style of Jazz music that allowed the musicians to express themselves freely was the invention of Avant-garde or free Jazz music.  Both of these styles stemmed from the Bebop era, yet produced a relaxed form of harmonic and rhythmic music in the 1940′s and 1950′s. The musicians John Coltrane, Dewey Redman, Charles Mingus, Sun Ra, Sam Rivers, Ornette Coleman and many more were the creators of the free Jazz music. Between the 1960′s and 1970′s the Latin musicians created the Afro-Cuban and Brazilian Jazz Music styles after Bebop musicians Dizzy Gillespie and Billy Taylor cultivated it.

Gillespie and Taylor was influenced by the music of Cuban and Puerto Rican musicians Chico O’farrill, Tito Puente, Chano Pozo, Xavier Cugat, Mario Bauza and Arturo Sandoval. Jazz music expressed in a Latin interpretation was termed Bossa Nova with origins in Samba music which is a mixture of Jazz, classical and pop music from the 20th century.  Bossa is a moderate sound of music with Classical harmonic structure from Europe, Samba polyrhythm’s from Brazil and cool music. The tempo of such a work is about 120 beats per minute. The instruments used in this particular sound is nylon stringed guitar, piano, high hat tap of eighths, tapping on the rim of the drum like Sade’s “Sweetest Taboo”, and a vocalist.  The sound produced is a new relaxing sound where the acoustic sound of the guitar can lull one to sleep with it’s easy melodic line.

Joao Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim became popular in the sixties with this style of music. The influence of Jazz music returned to the place of its origins in the religious music known as Urban Contemporary Gospel from the spirituals music. Much of spiritual music sung by southern slaves in the past has a haunting dark and mournful sound during the 1800 and 1900′s. The churches know as the sanctified or holy churches took a more happier approach by encouraging member to sing speak their  personal testimonies as they celebrated with song and dance. The sanctified artist Arizona Dranes  who was a traveling pastor made recordings that would fit in many musical categories such as  blues, and  boogie-woogie with the use of Jazz instruments. At the time the Jazz instruments used with religious themed music were percussion and brass instruments.

Who is the artist in Funk / jazz / rock cover of George Gershwin's "summer"?

I was recently at a high school rhythm and blues and show one of the songs really caught my ear. The song is credited (the same booklet to show through and the communicator) as a George Gershwin's "summer," but it did not sound very much like the original. This version is very funk / jazz, with a unique guitar riff, a cool bass line (played on electric keyboards), drums that drifted between jazz and rock, and a baritone sax. The loose piece of sax sounded like the original that song, but that's about all. I know the guitar parts heard somewhere before, so I know it's not an original arrangement. If someone could tell me artist recorded this arrangement, I would appreciate it. It is not "doin 'Time" by wonderful. Sorry, I mentioned earlier, because this would fit my description. It is something more Funk / jazz sound than impressive.

Personnel: Wallace Roney (trumpet); DJ Axum, Val “Gelder” Jeanty (turntables).Additional personnel: Antoine Roney (bass clarinet); Robert Irving III (Fender Rhodes piano); Geri Allen (keyboards); Rashaan Carter (bass guitar); Eric Allen (drums).Engineers: Manfred Knoop; David Stoller; Kevin Blackler. There is no irony to be found in the title Wallace Roney chose for his 14th studio album. The title is a statement. This album is most assuredly jazz, despite the presence of turntablists (DJ Axum appears for the second straight album, joined by Val Jeanty), occasional tangents into electronic downtempo, and 21-year-old bassist Rashaan Carter’s teaming with drummer Eric Allen to lay down some of the thickest grooves this side of hip-hop. The bass doesn’t walk all that much (which isn’t to say that Carter’s debut is anything short of outstanding) and you won’t find much swing-era swinging or obsessions with ’60s bop. That’s a good thing. Jazz is 21st century jazz by a weathered, seasoned, and credentialed 20-year vet. Unlike many contemporary musicians, Roney (the same trumpeter faultily plagued by Miles Davis-clone assassinations) is not stuck in the past. Instead, he makes music that is an ode to the past, music one wouldn’t mistake as straight-ahead jazz, although it does stare and venture straight ahead. On “Stand,” Roney’s reprise of the Sly Stone classic, Jeanty scratches in the chant “break the rules.” Jazz, however, sounds less like rebellion and more like invention. For the past three LPs — Jazz, Prototype (2004), and Mystikal (2005) — Roney and his trusted companions (pianist and wife Geri Allen, saxophonist and brother Antoine Roney) have collaborated to produce music the opposite of static. There is nothing static about tunes like Carter’s urban and brooding “Fela’s Shrine” that begins with a world vibe and morphs into street-corner jazz and Roney’s “Revolution: Resolution,” which travels through esoteric (in jazz terms) techno to the song’s bellicose theme. These are jazz songs that couldn’t have been created until now, contemporary in a fundamental (but not commercial) way. The older, purist crowd may either scoff or trivialize this album, which is actually expected. Jazz points to the new direction of jazz, and not everyone has to or will follow. ~ Vincent Thomas

Keller Williams has built his reputation as a one-man band, but also as an equally prolific and eclectic recording artist. So, it’s no surprise that he would want to stand his self-defined image on its ear with this long-in-the making collection of collaborations with other performers. No less than 31 other singers and musicians join him on one or more of the 16 tracks on the 73-minute CD. The biggest name, particularly for an artist known for his jam band associations, is former Grateful Dead singer/guitarist Bob Weir, who joins Williams on “Cadillac,” the two exchanging acoustic guitar riffs and singing Williams’ typically quirky lyrics. Then there is B? la Fleck, who adds his banjo to the progressive bluegrass of “People Watchin’.” Although perhaps fashioned with the guest stars in mind, those songs are characteristic of Williams’ most frequent style, as is “Sing for My Dinner,” on which he’s joined by the members of the String Cheese Incident, longtime friends of his. Other guests inspire different musical explorations. Jeff Covert contributes drums and lead guitar to the first track, “Play This,” which sounds like a mash-up of hardcore punk rock ? la Black Flag and the funk of Red Hot Chili Peppers. The funk continues with the second track, “Celebrate Your Youth,” featuring the band ModeReko, which could be mistaken for a lost song by Dave Matthews Band. The appearance of Michael Franti on “Ninja of Love” inspires a sort of Japanese reggae number, and Sanjay Mishra and Samir Chatterjee take the music to India for the instrumental “Lil’ Sexy Blues.” Second-generation San Francisco rock guitarist Steve Kimock, with Williams on bass and John Molo on drums, gives “Twinkle” a seven-plus-minute instrumental, the feel of one of the Dead’s “Space” improvisations, but Williams expects jazz guitarist John Scofield to adapt to his own style for “Got No Feather,” and Scofield obliges. No matter who’s accommodating whom, however, this is always Kelle…

Given Hooker’s unpredictable timing and piss-poor track record recording with bands, this 1965 one-off session for the jazz label Impulse! would be a recipe for disaster. But with Panama Francis on drums, Milt Hinton on bass, and Barry Galbraith on second guitar, the result is some of the best John Lee Hooker material with a band that you’re likely to come across. The other musicians stay in the pocket, never overplaying or trying to get Hooker to make chord changes he has no intention of making. This record should be played for every artist who records with Hooker nowadays, as it’s a textbook example of how exactly to back the old master. The most surreal moment occurs when William Wells blows some totally cool trombone on Hooker’s version of Berry Gordy’s “Money.” If you run across this one in a pile of 500 other John Lee Hooker CDs, grab it; it’s one of the good ones. ~ Cub Koda, Rovi

 Time Together

Time Together

Jazz singer/songwriter Michael Franks is an artist most jazz fans feel strongly about one way or another. His unique, romantic poet-cum-laid-back hipster approach to jazz signing is breezy, light, and languid. It’s also uniquely his own, though deeply influenced by Brazilian jazz, bossa, and samba. Time Together, his first recording of new material in five years — and his debut for Shanachie — is unlikely to change anyone’s opinion of him, but that doesn’t mean this is a rote recording. Time Together is an airy, groove-ridden summer travelog that ranges from St. Tropez and New York to Paris, France, and Egypt; it journeys through the nostalgic past and finds space in the present moment, with cleverly notated, languorous, ironic observations about life. Franks split the production and arranging duties between Charles Blenzig, Gil Goldstein, Chuck Loeb, Scott Petito, and Mark Egan. The rest of the international cast on this polished 11-song set includes old friends and new faces David Spinozza, Mike Mainieri, David Mann, Eric Marienthal, Till Br? nner, Alex Spiagin, Jerry Marotta, Billy Kilson, Romero Lubambo, and backing vocalist Veronica Nunn. Time Together is wonderfully polished without being overly slick. The set opens with “Now That the Summer’s Here,” a samba-inspired paean to laziness with excellent solos by Bronner’s trumpet and Marienthal’s alto. The arrangement by Loeb includes a perfectly balanced meld of acoustic and electric guitars, with the harmony chorus between Franks and Carmen Cuesta adding an essentially restrained yet celebratory tone. “One Day in St. Tropez” is one Franks’ finest reminiscence songs. Goldstein’s acoustic piano, Greg Cohen’s bass, and Lubambo’s acoustic guitar evoke classic bossa while the singer details in exotically rich, nostalgically romantic lyrics a 1963 hitchhiking excursion through Southern France. “Mice” is a humorous, metaphorically hip irony, illustrated beautifully by Manieri’s vibes, Petito’s bass, and Spin…

USED: FilmWorks: 1986-1990

Film Works 1986-1990 opens with John Zorn’s first film score, White and Lazy. In just under ten minutes comes small capsules of instrumental punk, rockabilly, dark ambient, nightclub jazz, until “End Title,” with vocals by Arto Lindsay, and soloing by Robert Quine (of Lou Reed’s band), who Zorn regards as “a punk guitar genius.” Next on the CD comes the music for The Golden Boat, a 1990 Raul Ruiz film. To parallel Ruiz’ low budget, B-movie work, Zorn decided against timing out the music, and instead generated as much variety as possible — from pastoral to pipe organ — in a one day recording session. Zorn then chopped up the results, applying the discontinuous flow to the film. Certainly, the quirky eclecticism heard here is a telling precursor to later film works such as Film Works, Vol. 7. As a bonus, this volume also includes the 1987 short arrangement of Ennio Morricone’s “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly,” which was recorded after Zorn was solicited by an advertising agency who had commissioned a reggae band, a string quartet, and a jazz group with the same task. “Main Title” moves in a driving piano-bass ostinato often heard in Ennio Morricone’s work; also, it is almost the exact progression as that later heard in Andy Prieboy’s scathing “New York Debut of an L.A. Artist (Jazz Crowd).” Getting the full last half hour of this release, the music for She Must Be Seeing Things has more space to develop, resulting in the most impressive and fully realized score, found in this first volume of film works. Although certainly a younger effort, there is a lot of good music on this first film works compilation. It is interesting to hear where Zorn’s scores began. And, for what it’s worth, this and all of the film works include well laid-out, beautiful liner notes. ~ Joslyn Layne, Rovi

The British saxophonist whose real name (Paul Weimar) just isn’t cool enough for superstardom has had a joyfully steady day job over the past decade as one of the key melodic, grooving ingredients in the post-acid jazz/smooth jazz jam band Down to the Bone. Still, it’s borderline criminal that his 2001 solo debut, the funk masterpiece See What Happens — which earned him a Best New Artist nomination at the now defunct National Smooth Jazz Awards — didn’t shoot him to solo stardom. Hopefully that will change with this similarly jamming debut for ARTizen, a label partly owned by fellow smooth funk masters Richard Elliot and Rick Braun. True to its name, HeadBoppin’s ten tracks — some featuring off-the-wall titles indicative of Shilts’ cheeky personality — will get you dancing, and if you’re driving, at least your head will move and groove (which is his intention). Co-produced by the saxman and Braun, the collection is a powerful showcase for his multitude of performing and composing talents, focusing not only on his lead alto and tenor brilliance but also his instantly infectious melodies. Throughout the nine originals and a playfully thumping romp through the magic of Stevie Wonder’s “Tuesday Heartbreak,” he keeps the explosive upbeat tempos and brassy textures he’s famous for with DTTB but incorporates more vibey old-school soul textures, moods, and atmospheres that create an inviting past-and-present soul-jazz experience. The vibrant and heavily soulful first single, “Look What’s Happened” — whose title is a riff on the title of his first album — features Braun on trumpet and fl? gelhorn over a groove established by veteran sidemen Ricky Lawson (drums) and Lenny Castro (percussion). Shilts also enjoys working with Freddie Washington (bass), Ricky Peterson (Hammond B-3), Ross Bolton (guitar), and guest artists Chris Standring (whose crackling guitar solo electrifies on “Tuesday Heartbreak”) and singer Siedah Garrett (the soaring, sensuous, and dreamy “…

USED: Slack Key Guitar: The Artistry of Jeff Peterson

$7.99

Jeff Peterson, a slack key guitarist from a paniolo community on Maui, has training in other forms of guitar playing, including classical and jazz. As a result, his technique is somewhat different from many of the old slack key masters — his sound is cleaner, arguably a little more sparse, and there is less of the usual self-harmonizing with the bass strings. As a result, the overall effect is a little less full, but perhaps a little brighter as well. This is slack key with a bit more modern touch, in the realm of a group like Kohala (indeed, Kohala’s Charles Michael Brotman is the producer of Peterson’s album). His playing is certainly able, with not a note missing from where it should be. At the same time, his sound is just a little less organic than that of a Sonny Chillingworth or Ledward Kaapana. This serves to differentiate him from the pack, which can be a boon or a bane, depending on the listener. The songs chosen on Slack Key Guitar: The Artistry of Jeff Peterson are a mix of original jams and old pieces from the masters (and, of course, Queen Lili). The mix works well for Peterson, showing his slightly less traditional side as well as the musical lineage from whence he comes. For a set of entirely traditional and homegrown slack key, the album doesn’t quite deliver. For a glimpse at an artist in stylistic transition between the old and new, this album succeeds entirely. ~ Adam Greenberg, Rovi

The sudden breakout of Chucho Vald? s as a solo artist in North America in 1998 was no doubt the leverage behind the new billing of his band, “Irakere featuring Chucho Vald? s,” and the large amount of exposure that his piano fireworks get here. The band sometimes doesn’t sound all that electrified by the prospect, though ultimately they do take us on a wide-ranging tour of acoustic and electric Latin jazz idioms and grooves. “Mister Bruce” most emphatically features the leader, a tour de force for Valdes who unleashes a torrent of notes (not always coherently) over percussion, bass and drums. “Santa Amalia” is straight ahead Latin jazz with lots of Valdes, hot horn solos and a flourish of vocals at the close, yet for all of its 13 minutes, it doesn’t totally ignite. “La Explosi? n,” with quotes from “Love for Sale” near the end, presents a multi-sectioned serpent of funk, bop and mambo — nothing really fused since the grooves appear in sections — while “San Francisco” is a fine, barely updated Latin boogaloo. “Son Montuno,” which also appears on Valdes’ Bele Bele en la Habana solo album, is blown open by some rough rock guitar, the old freewheeling Irakere spirit at work. Though Yemay? has its big moments, Vald? s seems to have saved his most heated inspirations of the late ’90s for his own solo work. ~ Richard S. Ginell, All Music Guide

Zappa Plays Zappa (2007) (ZPZ) is the name of the Dweezil Zappa (guitar/vocals)-led ensemble and the title of this double-DVD package. The contents were compiled from a pair of live ZPZ performances — December 21, 2006, in Portland, OR, at the Roseland Theater and in Seattle, WA’s Paramount Theater the following evening. The concept behind the ZPZ rockin’ teenage combo is to present the songs of Dweezil’s father — Frank Zappa — in a serious context for new generations of live attendees. For enthusiasts of the senior Zappa’s voluminous legacy and the junior’s impeccable fretwork, Zappa Plays Zappa is nothing short of a dream come true. Dweezil has assembled a core group of young men and women to aid in his note-perfect execution of Frank’s music. The talented ensemble in question consists of Joe Travers (drums/vocals), Pete Griffin (bass/vocals), Jamie W. Kime (guitar/vocals), Aaron Arntz (keyboards/trumpet/vocals), Scheila Gonzalez (saxophone/flute/keyboards/vocals), and Billy Hulting (mallets/percussion/manic ranting). One of the features of each ZPZ tour is special guests who shared the stage at one time or another with Frank Zappa. Mid-’70s Mother Napoleon Murphy Brock (vocals/sax/flute), early-’80s cohort Steve Vai (guitar), and late-’70s percussive madman Terry “Ted” Bozzio (drums/vocals) all drop by at various points throughout the proceedings. The set list is derived from the more than five dozen albums and projects that Frank Zappa had instigated during his 20-plus years as an active artist. Zappa Plays Zappa excels in their collective ability to flawlessly maneuver from hard rockers such as “Tell Me You Love Me” to the tightly structured jazz fusion of “Eat That Question” or the particularly tasty and extended workout given to the classically tinged early MOI instrumental “Pound for a Brown.” Brock being back on board gives the tunes “Andy,” “Florentine Pogen,” “Inca Roads,” “Village of the Sun,” and “Oh No” a familiar presence and s…
