The Development Of Blues Music
The contribution of Blues music to the event of many other genres of music is very significant. Jazz, rock music and country and western are simply some of the kinds that owe a whole lot of their progression from the original blues. Blues was initially grown out of the hardships endured by many generations of African Individuals, and first arose from the rural Mississippi region, around in regards to the time of the dawn of the twentieth century. The model developed from work shouts (known as arhoolies), and have become the vocal narrative style that we affiliate with blues music today.
Jazz, rock music and country and western are simply some of the types that owe a whole lot of their development from the unique blues. The contribution of Blues music to the development of many other genres of music could be very significant. Blues was originally grown out of the hardships endured by many generations of African People, and first arose from the agricultural Mississippi region, round about the time of the daybreak of the 20th century. The model developed from work shouts (often known as arhoolies), and became the vocal narrative fashion that we associate with blues music today.
By the 1920′s it had developed a really specific fashion, based round plenty of three-line rhymed stanzas. These stanzas contained one line of verse that was repeated, and completed with a ultimate line of rhyming verse. As business progressed and developed in to the 1920′s, so did the everyday lives of the folks it affected, and by this time Blues music was additionally developing.
The fashion also included a repeating blues chord progression, which was the basis of the harmony. The usual rule of thumb was a 12-bar pattern utilizing the 3 main chords of a scale. The textual content was set to a 12-bar refrain, and typically was between 4 and eight stanzas in length.
The melody is formed, typically, by flattened third, fifth and seventh notes of the foremost scale. This then varieties the ‘bent’ notes that give Blues music its distinctive sound – implementing the notes to have that bittersweet emotional impression that so many of us love. In the majority of Blues music, the vocals are the focus, which contradicts the truth that the performers will very often improvise instrumental solos over the Blues chord progressions.
Country Blues
Many itinerant musicians (the majority of which were males), travelled from one community to the following, singing songs that centered on love, freedom, intercourse and the overall sorrows of life. Often referred to as ‘Delta Blues’ (in tribute to the Mississippi Delta have been they first originated), nation blues arose from the Southern rural expertise, significantly influenced by the influence of emancipation.
Classic Blues
African People started to migrate, mainly searching for work. Areas corresponding to Memphis and New Orleans started to become extra populated, and these people brought their very own model of music with them. As they settled in these areas, it led to Blues music turning into alldatadiy coupon far more city-orientated. The music developed as their way of life evolved. Male or feminine vocalists began appearing more commonly, and there was now the addition of a single piano.
The recognition of this sort of music grew exponentially. The viewers additionally grew, and Blues grew to become more mainstream. Throughout the country as a complete, Blues music may now be heard in dancehalls and barrooms. The music industry as a complete started to take notice, and increasingly more compositions and advertising preparations emerged, as individuals began to take notice. In precise fact, what would become known as Basic Blues turned so common that many songs have been released with the phrase ‘blues’ in the title to capitalize on this, despite the fact that they bared little or no relation to the style of music.
Electrical Blues
The urge for food for the style of music referred to as the Blues was fairly voracious. Its center, previously clustered round Memphis and New Orleans, began to migrate, and shortly cities reminiscent of Chicago grew to become the central level of much of the music.
By the 1950′s this model was now not centered across the African American group, and was universally practiced throughout all races. Artists like Elvis and Invoice Haley began to include the Blues methods into their very own distinctive model of rock n roll. The end of the Second World Battle brought a new revival into the style, and artists began to develop the music, primarily by including a bit of additional emphasis on the bass drums and cranking up the guitar sounds.
The incorporation of the Blues fashion into totally different genres still exists immediately, and Blues music in its own proper continues to go from strength to strength – many high selling artists keep the original styles. The influence that Blues music has had on the music business as an entire is undisputed, and but Blues music remains to be evolving, nonetheless developing, and nonetheless evoking the stirrings of the soul to anybody who cares to hear!

Help to choose a great Jazz tune for performance?
I'm a jazz guitar player and the jazz group I play with is a wonderful group. There are 25 brass and woodwind players, two guitars, a pianist, a bass player, a drummer and a percussionist. We also have great vocalists at our disposal. We played everything from the standards, in Hancock and Zappa, but we need a very wonderful, very advanced piece to perform this year. We have several months of rehearsal time available, and our director is an Eastman graduate just so we are looking for a masterpiece of a tune. I hope any jazz lovers out there can only suggest that such a piece for us. Please include the composer, and if possible, the names of the specific arrangement. It will not matter what genre or During the jazz, we do it all from big band, to bop, to one in sorrow. Please share your experiences, and of course, thanks for helping.
Look at the music of Don Ellis and his big band. I would suggest the tune 'Rock Odyssey' or 'Last Analysis'. These are both his album Live at Fillmore. The Tears of Joy album also has some terrific numbers in it.

1000 Years of Popular Music $28.98 As the year 2000 loomed on the horizon, Playboy Magazine took it upon itself to ask a number of leading musicians to name the greatest songs of the soon-to-be-completed millennium. One of the musos queried was Richard Thompson, and while many of his comrades couldn’t be bothered to go further back than 1940 in their overview of musical history, the scholarly Thompson took the notion seriously enough to extend his own list of notable songs as far back as 1068 A.D. While Playboy never ended up printing Thompson’s list, the notion made enough of an impression on him that he put together a special show in which he guided his audience through his own version of the greatest hits of the past ten centuries. 1000 Years of Popular Music is culled from recordings of Thompson’s concert series of the same name, and beyond the novelty value of the set list (from the oldest round in the English language to Britney Spears in a mere 76 minutes!), it also offers a rare look at Thompson the interpretive musician, as well as lends a fascinating perspective on his musical influences. As one might expect, the early innings are dominated by the British folk tradition, with “King Henry V’s Conquest of France” and “Blackleg Miner” suggesting where Thompson’s melodic sense first took root, and other tunes demonstrating how operetta and the British music halls absorbed and refined similar themes. Thompson also indulges his passion for classic jazz of the 1930s and ’40s on some Nat King Cole and Louis Armstrong chestnuts, and wraps up by following rock & roll through Jerry Lee Lewis, the Who, and the Beatles to Prince and Britney Spears (“Oops! I Did It Again,” of which Thompson writes, “Taken out of context, this is a pretty nice song”). Considering that precious few of these songs were meant to be performed by a solo acoustic guitar, Thompson’s arrangements are inventive and effective; whether he’s going for laughs or drama, he gets the most from his material. (He’s also fortunat… |

A Thousand Kisses Deep $12.99 Chris Botti’s sixth album is a wonderfully, even perfectly crafted group of originals and covers that accent his deep crossover appeal as both a jazz and pop musician. Botti’s phrasing is very keen, uncanny in the way it works with simple rhythmic structures, and his tone is rich and warm. His use of keyboards and drum loops is pretty much up to the minute in terms of its hip factor, and his arrangements appeal to serious jazz fans and are something akin to blessed-out ecstasy to smooth jazz aficionados. Therein also lies the problem. Botti hasn’t significantly developed his sense of artifice since his debut album and, if anything, has delved deeper into its oh-so-cool bachelor pad faux elegance than ever on A Thousand Kisses Deep. The title track, a very moving song written by Leonard Cohen, is the finest moment on the disc. A spare guitar backdrop is adorned simply; Botti plays the melody in short, clipped staccato phrases for an entire full verse before the rhythm section enters. The effect is haunting, lushly romantic, and full of a sensual warmth that is as spooky as it is silky. The spare keyboards and brushed drums offer the song as something slightly Latin (thanks to the gorgeous guitar playing by Dean Parks). It could have been the love theme in Robert Rodriguez’s Once Upon a Time in Mexico — yes, it really does feel slightly mariachi! Burt Bacharach’s “The Look of Love,” despite a marvelous vocal by Chantal Kreviazuk, suffers from cute syndrome — as does “The Last Three Minutes,” another Bacharach tune. The straight pop stuff, such as “Ever Since We Met” with Bridget Benenate’s breathy vocals, work very well. Botti’s solo entwines the refrain and carries the singer’s voice along into the ether. A duet with pianist Billy Childs on “My Funny Valentine” feels a tad stilted, but there is great tension resolution in the third chorus. “If I Could,” another original, with the great Smokey Hormel on guitar in addition to Parks, is a true mood-setter… |

Al Kooper concert at Record Plant on 23 Oct 74 $9.98 Songwriter, Arranger, Bandleader, Musician, Vocalist, Producer, Performer and Historian cover some of what Al Kooper has simultaneously pursued over the past five decades. Few could lay claim to more consistently captivating results in any one of those challenging occupations. In terms of the mid-1960s transition from relatively primitive “rock & roll” to the more adventurous and all encompassing “rock” music, Kooper’s impact cannot be underestimated. The Butterfield Blues Band and The Blues Project, of which Kooper played a vital role, are probably the two most instrumentally influential American bands of the mid 1960s, particularly on an improvisational level. Following his tenure in The Blues Project, Kooper founded Blood, Sweat & Tears, expanding his arranging approach to include horns and recording their first and most engaging album in the process, Child Is Father To The Man. Never one to remain in one place very long, he exited shortly afterward, pursuing session work and a solo career, releasing a line of accomplished albums under his own name. Encompassing blues, rock, gospel and jazz, Kooper always achieved a unified soulful sound, full of subtlety, melodicism and depth. His vocals, instrumental performances and arrangements on these albums all reward repeated listening, the true test of a great recording. Familiarity with Kooper’s earlier work makes this solo acoustic performance all the more fascinating. It’s a testament to both his abilities as a songwriter and as an interpreter of other songwriters. Beginning the set with three songs on acoustic guitar, he warms up with “Brand New Day” from his 1970 album, Easy Does It. He continues with Harry Nilsson’s “Without Her,” one of the many standout tracks from the first Blood, Sweat & Tears LP. Even with just acoustic guitar and voice, this song is so melodically well crafted that its charms are obvious, but it’s the inherent vulnerability in Kooper’s voice that makes this performance so engaging. |

Animato $14.99 Animato is not so much John Abercrombie’s date simply because his name is listed first alphabetically. It is much more the music of Vince Mendoza, who composed six of the eight selections, and whose work on synthesizer is the dominant voice on this set of ethereal progressive instrumental music. Drummer Jon Christensen takes no backseat in urging the music forward with a subtle presence that represents a distinct primal and tribal jazz element. What electric guitarist Abercrombie does is link with Mendoza, merging his own synthesized blends of earth, sky and space to create beautiful textures and soundscapes in tandem with Mendoza’s conceptual arrangements and expanded color palates. In “First Light” and “Last Light,” the trio has touched on a theoretical circadian cycle, beginning in darkness, peace, serenity, and quietude, merging to darting guitar lines, bright steel drum samples, complex and dense activity, with Christensen’s drum work a steadying and balanced influence. There’s a hymnal quality in the airy “Single Moon” and the thin, dim “For Hope of Hope” with Mendoza’s organ assimilations. “Right Now” is a space spiritual sped into animated bop mode with just Abercrombie’s spare guitar and Christensen’s fleet Euro swing, while “Ollie Mention” is a little waltz with tiny notes, the most tuneful of these pieces, with Mendoza’s keyboards traipsing in dark, sacred, enchanted woodlands. Whooshing, vortex sounds akin to the Fairlight synthesizer identify the core of Abercrombie’s lone composition in a somewhat playful fashion, while “Agitato” is clearly nestled in the new age style, a minimalist piece with hard drum accents buoying Abercrombie’s individualist hypothesis. An unusual but beautiful item in John Abercrombie’s discography, and a coming out for Mendoza, Animato signals a different direction for the ECM label, enabling electronic sounds in a way they had never fully embraced prior. ~ Michael G. B.B. King concert at Fillmore East on 19 Jun 71 $12.98 These two Fillmore East sets by the great American blues guitarist, singer and songwriter B.B. King capture him at the peak of popularity. The previous year, his remake of the Roy Hawkins’ tune “The Thrill Is Gone” raced up both the pop and R&B charts, gaining King more fans and media attention than he’d experienced at any other time in his career. For the first time, he was experiencing mainstream success, and he sounds passionate and full of conviction. Fans of his Live at Cook County Jail album will find these shows just as remarkable, if not more so. King always delivered well-rehearsed, utterly professional shows, and these are no exception, though here he sounds more relaxed and spontaneous. King’s obvious enthusiasm for his music shines through every solo with sheer joy. His brilliant, inspired guitar playing defies easy categorization. Whether soulful, rocking, contemplative, or down and dirty, his guitar style and tone exudes authority with every note. The late show begins with King’s band warming up on an instrumental with a style somewhere between R&B and contemporary jazz. At the end they announce B. B. King, who takes command of the stage and again leads the group through a double whammy of straight blues. First up is King’s trademark “Everyday I Have the Blues,” which segues into “How Blue Can You Get.” Levi’s infectious piano playing, the hot horn arrangements -to say nothing of King’s powerful guitar playing and impassioned vocals – all add up to a great performance, already equaling the best moments of the earlier show. The first of this set’s instrumentals kicks things into high gear. This swinging rocker features frenetic piano and smoking guitar throughout. “A Whole Lotta Lovin’” is another up-tempo number with King and the group rocking out full tilt. The style’s reminiscent of Johnny Winters, but with a refinement and tension control that is pure B.B. They then slows things down and delivers a searing, slow blues number showcasing his |

Blow by Blow $24.98 Blow by Blow typifies Jeff Beck’s wonderfully unpredictable career. Released in 1975, Beck’s fifth effort as a leader and first instrumental album was a marked departure from its more rock-based predecessors. Only composer/keyboardist Max Middleton returned from Beck’s previous lineups. To Beck’s credit, Blow by Blow features a tremendous supporting cast. Middleton’s tasteful use of the Fender Rhodes, clavinet, and analog synthesizers leaves a soulful imprint. Drummer Richard Bailey is in equal measure supportive and propulsive as he deftly combines elements of jazz and funk with contemporary mixed meters. Much of the album’s success is also attributable to the excellent material, which includes Middleton’s two originals and two collaborations with Beck, a clever arrangement of Lennon and McCartney’s “She’s a Woman,” and two originals by Stevie Wonder. George Martin’s ingenious production and string arrangements rival his greatest work. Beck’s versatile soloing and diverse tones are clearly the album’s focus, and he proves to be an adept rhythm player. Blow by Blow is balanced by open-ended jamming and crisp ensemble interaction as it sidesteps the bombast that sank much of the jazz-rock fusion of the period. One of the album’s unique qualities is the sense of fun that permeates the performances. On the opening “You Know What I Mean,” Beck’s stinging, blues-based soloing is full of imaginative shapes and daring leaps. On “Air Blower,” elaborate layers of rhythm, duel lead, and solo guitars find their place in the mix. Propelled by the galvanic rhythm section, Beck slashes his way into “Scatterbrain,” where a dizzying keyboard and guitar line leads to more energetic soloing from Beck and Middleton. In Stevie Wonder’s ballad “Cause We’ve Ended as Lovers,” Beck variously coaxes and unleashes sighs and screams from his guitar in an aching dedication to Roy Buchanan. Middleton’s aptly titled “Freeway Jam” best exemplifies the album’s loose and fun-loving q… |

Blues Dream $14.99 From the beginning of Blues Dream, the listener knows that something special is going on. The spare notes of Ron Miles’ trumpet and the relaxed guitar work of Greg Leisz lay the groundwork for a spacious sound on the title cut. This openness remains throughout the album, even when alto and trombone are added into the mix. The instrumental “Ron Carter” begins with the loose, electrified feel of an early Miles Davis fusion piece, with Bill Frisell’s distorted guitar exploring the space of the piece without resorting to excessive volume. The short and sweet “Pretty Stars Were Made to Shine” leans heavier on the country side, with steel guitar and Chet Atkins’ fingerpicking dominating. The arrangements on Blues Dream are a big change from last year’s solo effort, Ghost Town. An essential part of the overall sound is Leisz’ steel guitar and lap steel work. He also played with Frisell on Good Dog, Happy Man, and helps to set the mood and pace throughout Blues Dream. Ron Miles plays a smaller role, but it is fascinating how well his relaxed trumpet, with its carefully chosen notes, fits into the mix on the title cut and the short “Episode.” Blues Dream is a perfectly chosen title: the material, steeped in the blues, is approached in a lazy, dreamlike fashion. Frisell’s fondness for putting unusual combinations of instruments together adds to the overall effect, leaving the listener to wonder why no one has ever tried this before. Blues Dream is a lovely release that should satisfy Frisell fans as well as jazz, country, and blues fans looking for a genre-bending experience. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr., Rovi |

Chamber Music Society $18.98 As evidenced by her self-titled 2008 debut, Esperanza Spalding is a quadruple threat as composer, bassist, singer, and producer. That album spent an astonishing 70 weeks on Billboard’s contemporary jazz chart, and was the best-selling album by a new artist internationally for that calendar year. Given its critical and commercial success, a follow-up can exert so much pressure internally and externally, that an artist loses her/his focus and the end result is less than stellar. Not so with Chamber Music Society. Spalding has assembled an intriguing collection of tunes, is accompanied by stellar backing musicians — drummer Terri Lynne Carrington, pianist Leonardo Genovese, and percussionist Quintino Cinalli with a pair of string players — and guests that reveal her exquisite taste in both compositions and arrangements (the latter with intermittent help from Gil Goldstein). The album opens with a Spalding composition to illustrate William Blake’s poem “Little Fly”; her vocal is understated yet fully articulate. She is backed only by her bass and a graceful, small, unintrusive string section. “Winter Sun” is a standout with its fingerpopping breaks and a melodic nu-soul vocal that touches on scat with astute syncopation, and features taut, imaginative bass and piano solos. It walks the line between modern jazz and adult contemporary R&B . On Esperanza, she covered Milton Nascimento’s “Ponta de Areia.” Here, she ups the ante by duetting with the Brazilian artist on her own “Apple Blossom,” backed by strings and Richard Vogt’s nylon-string guitar. Nascimento’s trademark baritone is allowed considerable improvisational freedom that features his otherworldly falsetto. Her reading of Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “Inutil Paisagem” almost forgoes samba entirely in favor of a more classically disciplined duet vocal arrangement, as Spalding’s voice and bass are accompanied only by Gretchen Parlato’s divine vocal. Parlato also appears with wordless singing on “Knowledge… |

Chicago Transit Authority $34.98 Few debut albums can boast as consistently solid an effort as the self-titled Chicago Transit Authority (1969). Even fewer can claim to have enough material to fill out a double-disc affair. Although this long- player was ultimately the septet’s first national exposure, the group was far from the proverbial “overnight sensation.” Under the guise of the Big Thing, the group soon to be known as CTA had been honing its eclectic blend of jazz, classical, and straight-ahead rock & roll in and around the Windy City for several years. Their initial non-musical meeting occurred during a mid-February 1967 confab between the original combo at Walter Parazaider’s apartment on the north side of Chi Town. Over a year later, Columbia Records staff producer James Guercio became a key supporter of the group, which he rechristened Chicago Transit Authority. In fairly short order the band relocated to the West Coast and began woodshedding the material that would comprise this title. In April of 1969, the dozen sides of Chicago Transit Authority unleashed a formidable and ultimately American musical experience. This included an unheralded synthesis of electric guitar wailin’ rock & roll to more deeply rooted jazz influences and arrangements. This approach economized the finest of what the band had to offer — actually two highly stylized units that coexisted with remarkable singularity. On the one hand, listeners were presented with an incendiary rock & roll quartet of Terry Kath (lead guitar/vocals), Robert Lamm (keyboards/vocals), Peter Cetera (bass/vocals), and Danny Seraphine (drums). They were augmented by the equally aggressive power brass trio that included Lee Loughnane (trumpet/vocals), James Pankow (trombone), and the aforementioned Parazaider (woodwind/vocals). This fusion of rock with jazz would also yield some memorable pop sides and enthusiasts’ favorites as well. Most notably, a quarter of the material on the double album — “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It … |

Color Him Funky/H.R. Is a Dirty Guitar Player $18.98 Two Capitol LPs are reissued in full on this CD. Howard Roberts, a talented jazz guitarist from the 1950s who chose to become a studio musician, is in fine form on these selections, playing soul-jazz and swinging hard bop with a pair of quartets that have either Paul Bryant or Burkley Kendrix on organ. At the time these albums were released (they were both recorded in 1963), one could be excused for shying away from them because they both clocked in at barely a half-hour apiece and the individual selections were all quite concise, almost always less than three minutes apiece. The latter was on purpose so the numbers could be played on AM radio. But as it turned out, Roberts and his group did an excellent job of making every moment count, playing concise but self-sufficient arrangements and taking short but meaningful solos. So although most of the songs seem to end when they are just starting to get going, a lot of music takes place in a short period of time. Roberts recorded a long series of albums for Capitol, and the two combined on this CD are arguably his best for the label. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi |

Count Basie and His Orchestra concert at Newport Jazz Festival on 03 Jul 64 $5.98 Following a successful stint with Roulette Records from 1957 to 1962, a productive period which primarily highlighted the compositions and arrangements of Neal Hefti, Count Basie began a new working relationship with Verve Records and handed over the reigns to new composer-arranger Billy Byers, who brought a new modern sheen to the band with his writing and arranging, which can readily be heard on Basie Land, the Count’s Verve album (recorded in March of 1964, just a few months before his appearance at the ’64 Newport Jazz Festival). However, Basie decided to showcase only one new Byers tune at his Friday evening performance, choosing to go with some old reliable numbers from his repertoire along with a couple of more obscure offerings. Ironically, they open their July 3rd set with a Neal Hefti tune, “Splanky,” which was introduced on 1957′s The Atomic Mr. Basie. Paced by the rock steady rhythm section of Basie, bassist Buddy Catlett, drummer Payne and rhythm guitarist Green, this easy-swinging opener sets a quintessential Basie-esque tone with the Count’s sparse piano comping and the dynamic shout choruses from the horns. It also features an outstanding tenor sax solo from Foster, a member of the Basie band since 1953. They keep the tempo in the same easy-going vein on “Sassy,” a chugging bluesy number written by Byers and dedicated to singer Sarah Vaughan (whose nickname was Sassy). On the 1964 album Basie Land, this tune was a flute feature for Basie’s longtime reedman, Frank Wess. However, Wess left the band prior to this Newport appearance, so the piece becomes a flute feature for Eric Dixon. Al Aarons is also showcased on muted trumpet, playing unisons along with Dixon on the head before stepping out for a soulful solo of his own. A rendition of “All Of Me” opens with some impromptu ivory tickling from the Count before he settles into the familiar melody, backed only by Catlett’s walking bass, Payne’s subtle brushwork and Green’s chunking rhythm guitar. Donny Hathaway concert at Carnegie Hall on 30 Jun 73 $5.98 A smooth soul singer who injected rhythmic complexity, harmonic sophistication, and a jazzy sensibility into his ambitious arrangements, Donny Hathaway was a bona fide superstar during the ’70s. A romantic crooner capable of sanctified intensity on some of his more cathartic gospel flavored originals, Hathaway reached his commercial zenith as Roberta Flack’s duet partner on popular hits like “Where Is The Love?” and “The Closer I Get To You.” Unfortunately, his ascending career came to a tragic demise with his apparent suicide in 1979 at the age of 33. Hathaway’s appearance at Carnegie Hall for the 1973 Newport Jazz Festival in New York caught the multi-talented soul singer-composer-arranger-keyboardist at the peak of his powers, performing material from his ambitious new release, Extensions of a Man. Hathaway opens with the ebullient “Flying Easy,” an appealing precursor to smooth jazz which sounds like it might’ve served as the template for George Benson’s Breezin’, the guitarist-vocalist’s platinum-selling album from 1976 for Warner Bros. Records. Interestingly, the next tune on Hathaway’s set list, his inventive jazz fusion instrumental “Valdez in the Country,” was covered by Benson on his 1977 album, In Flight. Guitarist Lee Ritenour also covered the tune on a 1976 compilation presented by Guitar Player magazine and released on MCA Records. Clearly, Hathaway had his share of fans in music circles, as well as the general public. Switching from electric piano to grand piano, Hathaway next delivers the transcendent message song “Someday We’ll All Be Free” with spine-tingling, gospel inspired majesty. His lovely, Latin flavored instrumental “Nu-Po” (a slang reference to Newport) is a tune he wrote especially for the festival. Hathaway stretches out here and improvises in daring fashion on electric piano while his rhythm section cooks up an infectious Afro-Cuban groove underneath. Returning to his Extension of a Man album, Hathaway and his crew turn in a soulful |

First Light [Bonus Track] $10.98 Never one to take lyricism for granted, trumpeter and composer Freddie Hubbard entered Creed Taylor’s studio for the third time in 1974 with the express purpose of making a record radically different from anything he’d cut before; he was looking for it to use electricity and to be out of the soul-jazz mold, but was also more ambitious and wanted to push that envelope and himself. Taylor and Hubbard assembled a band that included Herbie Hancock on Rhodes, guitarists Eric Gale and George Benson, bassist Ron Carter, Jack DeJohnette on drums, Airto Moreira on percussion, and Richard Wyands on acoustic piano to back him. The band was also supported by the truly ethereal and adventurous string arrangements of Don Sebesky (a first for Hubbard). The result is a masterpiece of textured sound, gorgeously far-flung charts, sweet, tight grooves, a subtle mystic feel, and some of Hubbard’s most exciting playing ever. The title track — there are two versions here, the alternate is almost five minute longer than the master — and Hubbard’s ingenious read of Paul and Linda McCartney’s “Uncle Albert/ Admiral Halsey,” as well as Leonard Bernstein’s “Lonely Town,” are so in the pocket that they bleed soul. Benson’s uncharacteristically edgy guitar playing juxtaposed against Hubbard’s warm tone, and Hancock’s beautifully modal Rhodes lines that are drenched with big, open, minor chord voicings, are simply made more illustrious and graceful by Sebesky’s strings. While Red Clay and Straight Life are both fine albums, “First Light” is the one that connects on all levels — and it did with the jazz-buying public as well. A masterpiece. [CTI's 2003 version added a bonus track, "First Light."] ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi |

George Benson concert at Newport Jazz Festival on 03 Jul 69 $5.98 By 1969, George Benson was in the midst of being reinvented and repackaged as a more accessible guitar star. Coming up in the mid-’60s as a torrid bop-oriented soloist and highly touted heir to Wes Montgomery (who died on June 15, 1968), Benson began melding popular elements into his music as early as 1968 (on Giblet Gravy, which included covers of the Association’s “Along Came Mary” and the Young Rascals’ “Groovin’”). The following year, producer Creed Taylor recruited Don Sebesky, who had provided the lush arrangements on Montgomery’s 1966 hit recording, California Dreaming, to provide orchestral sweetening on Shape of Things to Come, Benson’s debut on A&M Records. Benson and his quartet (sans strings and brass) hit the Newport stage on this Thursday evening to recreate material from Shape of Things to Come. Opening with that album’s title track, Benson and company warm up the crowd with a soul-jazz interpretation of Barry Mann’s tune from the 1968 teensploitation flick Wild in the Streets. Harold Ousley is featured on flute here while Charlie Covington offers a killer Hammond B-3 solo. Benson kicks in a typically fluid guitar solo (though on an uncharacteristically trebly-sounding guitar). From that relatively innocuous pop ditty, the quartet launches into a smoking rendition of Thelonious Monk’s “Straight No Chaser.” Ousley really -opens up on this up-tempo cooker, blowing with boppish authority on tenor sax while organist Covington stokes the heated proceedings with surging bass lines and forceful old school comping. Benson begins his solo with deliberate picking before gradually unleashing some single note pyrotechnics, eventually shifting to deft chord soloing at the culmination of his exhilarating solo. Covington adds a sizzling solo without dropping a beat on his walking left hand bass lines. And they all engage in some fiery exchanges of eights with drummer Leo Morris (later known as Idris Muhammad) at the tag. Benson’s funky boogaloo “Footin’ It” ( |
