COUNTING THE COST OF CHILDREN’S PARTIES
Whatever happened to musical chairs? With Americans spending over 10 billion dollars a year on birthday parties, the games the children play are a far cry from the traditional favourites handed down over generations.
Parties seem to be supersized these days.With more and more money being spent on party celebrations, parents are under growing pressure to deliver an extravangaza for their own children.The party planning industry is burgeoning, with the traditional jumping castle making way for entertainers, fully propped themed events, magic shows and music bands
We’re not that phased when celebrities throw lavish, expensive celebrations.The Beckhams were said to have spent ten thousand dollars on a party for their eldest son, Brooklyn to celebrate his fifth birthday, while Suri Cruise enjoyed a second birthday party which cost her parents a cool 100 000 dollars, including a 5 000 dollar cake.But regular folk are being influenced by the Hollywood effect, and many parents feel under pressure to keep up.
And it’s all the extras that stack up the costs. Recent findings put the average cost of goody bag given to guests in Britain at 7.50 pounds, which amounts to an unbelievable sum of 239 pounds a year.Candy and plastic trinkets are being shunned in favour of pricey gifts, with some goody bags even boasting French fragrance and real jewellery.
The culture of excess has prompted a response from concerned parents around the world and there are numerous websites offering advice on more modest alternatives. One citizen action group, Birthdays without Pressure, was formed to raise awareness of what they say is ‘parties out of control’ and to engage in dialogue about the reasons for it, the consequences and action that parents can take.
They are concerned about a number of trends, including one in which kids are given ‘half birthday’ parties every six months. Their website cites examples of excess, such as a wealthy New York father who threw a million dollar party for his 13 year old daughter’s birthday, including the band Aerosmith and $10,000 gift bags and a one year old’s party in Minnesota where the 60 guests endured two hours of gift opening, while the party baby slept through!
What’s the alternative?
* Downsize the invitation list
* Request a charity donation rather than a gift
* Be imaginative and make gift bags economical. paper bag filled with homemade treats, or some birdseed or flower seeds
* Having a theme can escalate costs.What about a party without a theme
* Outsourcing the event can be a costly route. Have a home party, and make cleaning up fun
* Shop around for the best prices on party goods, and visit discount stores for good value items
* Have the party at a time when a meal isn’t expected, such as 9 to 11 in the morning or 2 to 4 in the afternoon
* Enlist the involvement of the kids. Use plain paper as a table cloth and provide crayons for kids to decorate.
* Organise fun activities and games, like pass the parcel and musical chairs
