Learn Piano Scales With Ease
Learning to play scales can be a problem and hard work for many beginner piano players. So are scales in truth that important and if they are, what purpose do they have? The only actual purpose of scales is to teach your fingers and your brain to play particular patterns, the scales themselves are not that melodically pleasing.
The idea is that if you learn a particular scale then you will find it simpler to play a piece of music written in that key as the finger movements will mostly incorporate only the notes of that particular scale. If you learn a scale and then play a piece of music in the same key you will find the finger movements exceptionally familiar. In theory if you have mastered each and every one of the scales in every key then you ought to be at ease playing pieces in most keys.
Learning scales is only actually possible if you practice them constantly again and again. This may become a bit of a chore but you can use it as a sort of a warm up to your practice sessions. Only 5 or 10 minutes each day is generally enough. Check out the Rocket piano review website for more information and help on learning piano along with a number of remarkable critiques on home study courses and a free chord-sheet and beginners guide to piano playing.
You will learn a lot more thoroughly if you use a metronome whilst you practice your scales. Keep in time as much as you can with the metronome and if you run into problems following the beat then just slow it down until you are more at ease. Repetition time and again is the means to really learn your scales so set the metronome so you can do this easily. You might also look at the following site for extra information on learning piano at home:
Luckily you won’t have to master all of the scales at once. You’ll be able to learn then a few at a time. The main scales are good to start with, C, F and G and maybe later on D, E and A. You can spend a number of days or even weeks just learning one new scale. You do nevertheless need to keep playing the scales you have previously learned or they will get difficult to play again. Before trying to learn a new scale, each day you should begin your practice by playing the ones you have previously learned. As you will discover, not all scales use the same fingering patterns, it is exceptionally important that you get these right.
Play your scales exceptionally unhurriedly when you are first learning them to be certain that you are playing the right notes with the correct fingers. Learn a scale first with one hand and then with the other and make sure that you start and end on the correct finger. If you are struggling with getting the correct notes then slow it down again, really slowly. Then only keep repeating over and over again. Once you are more at ease you might want to notch up the metronome little by little. There is a video review of the best piano course available here: How to learn piano
If you are practicing a scale slowly enough to play it perfectly then you will realize that after some minutes of repeating it that it will become so simple to play that you will not even have to think about it. With just a few minutes of regular scale practice a day then over a few months you should be able to completely master all of the scales.

What does the gm / C # (or F # M7 / F) mean?
I'm trying to play a chord on a piano (or transcribe for the voice), and I only have guitar tablature. If it is a simple "gm" or "F # M7", no problem. But does it mean when I have two chords separated by a slash? Thanks.
Yes, a chord separated by a slash is an inversion, but more importantly it tells you know what the sign is the lowest pitch string sound (the bass note). Here are the chords you listed above: gm / F # – F # (bass note) G Bb DF # M7 / F – F natural (bass note) F # AC # E I hope I did not see this last one in any context, because this would be very inconsistent. So remember to play the chord on the left part of the slash, but the lowest note should be the sign on the right side of slash.
