Is it just me, or do firms hits record stock-pile in preparation for three glorious months of summer sunshine? Here are entries from my current playlist: Songs for a twenty-y Sunshine Summer 2010. Before you start to question my musical sanity, allow me to preface: some of the songs were anthems training (I challenge you not to sing along), some are so popular that I had to include them, others are guilty pleasures that I'm slightly embarrassed to list, and some rare tunes that I do not accept repeat. I also threw in some old favorites, because no list is complete without them. Now off you go, add, subtract, multiply and share my list and find your perfect summer hit list.

Once compiled your list, you know how to deal electronics so your personal playlist becomes the soundtrack to your summer. What good is an epic playlist if it remains a sad folder on your iTunes and not seeing the light of day? No good at all! Granted, I can play songs over just a little bit, the word obsession comes to mind. However, a real summer soundtrack is one that you CAN and WILL play repeatedly. So, make sure you have ways to make your summer set list as portable as possible.

Poolside hangouts are definitely a staple of summer. If you are diving into the deep end or enjoying a Jacuzzi after a long day, from June to August are incomplete without some splashing. If you are accident prone like yours truly, your electronics near the water meter is probably buzzing. My advice: invest in a system with a remote speaker. It will save you time (no need to get out and dry off before changing the song) AND save you money long run because no one likes a wet ipod.

Beach trips are synonymous with summer as childhood lemonade stands. However, there is one major obstacle for beach party sing-along: sand. The little grain of sand seem to find their way onto, in and around any surface possible. you know what that means: beware electronics. Take precautions to ensure your iPods / Blackberry / iPhones are all the cases. All 3 of these devices have the ability to play your favorite tunes. But they also have the ability to die for the sand-infiltration. If you are really brave and decide to take the speaker on the coast, PLEASE oh please use a case. We are going for summer sing-alongs no summer job to cover the cost of new electronic toys.

Driving in the car is the last, and my personal favorite, locale summer playlist. Windows down, speak up and vocal chords warmed up, singing your heart out of your newly minted playlist is an absolute must. Speaks your car become your back-up band, any friends to ride with you magically transform back-up singers and you take millions of screaming fans. What could be bad about that? Nothing at all unless your Ipod will not play in your car. Get yourself a tape or an FM transmitter Stat. Your soundtrack awaits you.

Save Me, San Francisco [Golden Gate Edition] $14.99 San Francisco’s Train hit the charts with a bang early in the 21st century with hits like “Calling All Angels” and “Drops of Jupiter.” Save Me, San Francisco took four years to make, four studios in the United States and England, songwriting collaborators, and even a handful of producers, though Martin Terefe gets final credit. Save Me, San Francisco is a very focused record, centering around the theme of a wandering young rocker who falls in love and wants to settle down. The title track opens with an acoustic guitar playing a variation on the classic I-IV-V progression, a snare kicks in, and Pat Monahan’s vocal evokes prime Bob Seger in its confessional style. A piano and electric guitars enter on “whooo-hooo-hooo” chorus, and it’s near-perfect radio rock. That said, the single “Hey Soul Sister,” a love song with the best anthemic Train chorus to date, is the album’s most memorable cut, name-checking Mr. Mister and employing a Madonna metaphor — crediting her in the process. Acoustic guitars, kick drums, tom-toms, mandolins, and a B-3 underscoring Monahan’s emotive lyrics and melody make it literally unforgettable. “I Got You” samples the Doobie Brothers’ “Black Water” as an intro, and then further uses its chorus with a faux-reggae backbeat. It’s a high-gloss, big-production pop number. There are a couple of Monahan’s signature ballads here, too: the conflict-laden “This Ain’t Goodbye,” arranged with strings, and “Words,” with its undying profession of standing in the eye of the storm to protect the protagonist’s beloved. “Brick by Brick,” with its swelling refrain, has a lyric that promises the moon and tries to deliver it in the processional 4/4 time that underscores all of Train’s power ballads. The album concludes with “Marry Me,” in which Monahan sings nearly prayerfully, accompanied only by an acoustic guitar, flute, and muted percussion.
