A Short Introduction to the Amazon Rainforest

An old Indian legend says God is not done in the Amazon when people showed up. So, the story goes, God decided to leave, expecting people not last very long, when he would return to finish his work. Now, more than 20 million people live not finished work that stretches from the Andes to the west in the Atlantic in the east, from the Guyana Plateau to the north from the Brazilian savannah in the south. It's size is difficult, which contains as:

  • 5% of world land.
  • 20% of global fresh water reserves.
  • 1 / 3 of the world's forests.
  • 40% of South America.
  • 60% of Brazil.
  • 0.4% of the global population.

Despite being a large continuous forest, the Amazon is highly differentiated from the geophysical and ecological perspectives. Clear examples curious traveler will discover the differently colored rivers, from the deep black waters of the river Negro in the yellow muddy waters of the Solimoes, and their excellent meeting where the two colors in travel for many miles, side-by-side without ever mixing. And such meeting, the traveler is likely to also meet the votes Rosa, the pre-historic pink dolphins of the Amazon, figure of so many legends and stories forbidden in the region. In fact, the traveler encounters one of the last frontiers of the very few.

Multiple co-existing ecosystems alongside and integrated with one another, while flooded forests and floodplains (locally known as igapó and varzea) cover 5% of the region, the remaining forest land terrain comprises companies. There are five distinct regions, with specific geographical as well as biological characteristics in each one: Amazon Atlantic, with coastal swamps along the border of the Brazilian states of Para and Amapa in Brazil, the central floodplain, which stretches from the Atlantic all the way in Peru, following the footsteps of the Amazon River, northern plateau, a land of poor soils and, farther north one goes, the more rocky and mountainous it becomes; the southern basin, a land of fertile soils and muddy river wild, and cis-Andine Amazon, a transition zone that ends in steep snowy slopes of the Andes. A typical four square mile patch Harbors anywhere in the Amazon more than 1500 species of flowering plants, 750 trees, 125 mammals, 400 birds, 100 reptiles, 60 amphibians, and 150 of butterflies. Amazingly, the crown of a single tree, probably over 50 feet tall, can play host to more than five thousand species of insects.

land This is a region marked by biological, geologic, economic and social differences; century explorers have documented such. For example, many may recall the familiar legend of the Amazon women, a myth founded the first person to travel from the Atlantic Ocean, Francisco de Orellana purportedly experienced the ferocious warrior women in 1542. Since then, other adventurers, scientists and hope-seekers have traveled, and occupyied studyied region, even with varying degrees of success. Among these, the most unusual include:

  • Alexander von Humboldt, who mapped the poem connecting the Orinoco basin in Venezuela to the Amazon basin, the 300-mile long Casiquiare Canal, available for visits even now only the most adventurous travelers.
  • Henry Walter Bates and Alfred Russell Wallace, who collectively made one of the most productive natural history discoveries. Alfred was later co-discover (with Darwin) the theory of evolution.
  • Jacques Cousteau, the fearless adventurer and modern scientists who, as far as I know, is the only person with enough the courage to have swum in a school of piranhas.

Visit the Amazon one can not help but appreciate the difficulties and wonders the explorers experienced. From the airplane, the green carpet seem eternal and peaceful, the soil, it is anything but. First traveler would notice chirps, beeps, squawks, and the plethora of other strange sounds that come from nowhere and everywhere at the same time. Next, the smells of freshness and flowering plant mix in the musty smell of decaying vegetation, marking the unending cycle of life and death battle. Locate and one sees the static results of a century-long to fight for the light: the vines intertwine in trees, branches reaching higher and higher outsmart each other in a desperate fight for sunlight. So well against it a place on earth is likely to have the sun shine directly on it one time only every 50 years, the point at which some surrounding trees finally gives up, died, dropped to the ground and leaves an opening in the canopy, a shred of hope filled the newborn. Living in such unimagined prosperity, yet overwhelming.

Alongside such natural exuberance, more than 20 million people live. The history of human occupation in the Amazon stretches back 11,000 years, around Monte Alegre, where archaeological sites were uncovered, noting the presence of fairly complex community much earlier than usual and expected in a region where their lives are not considered possible just a few years ago. Splitting the traveler a few days to spare can take a small plane from Santarém Monte Alegre to visit the natives' wall paintings still visible today. Ancient Indian population is still present, although outsiders are rarely invited to visit. Though shocking to some, there several small Indian tribes that have never experienced or defined by us, Westerners, it is not a tribute to our inexperience, but rather than the amazing size of the forest.

The larger, non-native to work, however, came with the discovery of important natural products: notably, rubber. Hevea Brasiliensis most, the local seringueira known, is the tree that yields valuable products as easy Charles Goodyear invented the rubber vulcanization process in 1839. At the end of the 19th century, the industry producing bicycles and vehicles on record pace, the market for indeniably hot rubber. A wealth of Manaus, then the center of the rubber trade, is legendary, this is the first city in South America with electricity. Stones, telephone system, Tramways are all imported from Europe, including crystal chandeliers, pianos, champagne and caviar. The main standing reminder of this season is the Teatro Amazonas, the opera house in Manaus. For a population of only 30 thousand, the Opera House can sit and 1600 contained glass, marble, and other materials imported from well-off in Europe. As wealth hid the extreme hardship faced by the rubber tappers, as the trees scattered along the forest and resisted multiple attempts of domestication to the field. Remains of the dreams of domestication can be seen in Fordlândia today, aptly named after U.S. industrialist Henry Ford, along the banks of the Tapajos river.

Today, Brazilian development is encroaching on the southern borders of the Amazon. Such land is fertile, and with the recent growth in agriculture in tropical climates, population growth and the appreciation of commodities in international markets, the economy has shifted. Over the past five years, deforestation has ranged between 15 and 26,000 squared kilometers in Brazil. Put in perspective, the Brazilian part of the Amazon is approximately 3.6 million square kilometers, so the current rate is between 0.4% and 0.7% per years, indeed worrisome. It is estimated that deforestation has reached approximately 20% of the region, mainly to give way to animal breeding in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso, Rondônia, and for. The socio-economic processes in play is a huge migration from southern states in Brazil, where the land is mostly occupied, south Amazon, which has abundant land and few people.

Despite global growth, a look at the people of the Amazon will also reveal an unenviable socio-economic situation. The historic drought of 2005, hunger, disease and isolation threatened riverside population. In large cities, the traveler will uncover squatters and poor living conditions.

Debussy The Little Negro for Piano

Debussy The Little Negro for Piano

$8.5

Debussy wrote this little piece in ragtime style for Thodore Lacks piano tutor, which was published by Leduc in 1909. It was originally entitled The Little Nigar and bore the subtitle Cake Walk, explained in a footnote as Danse ngre dite Danse du gteau. In 1934 Leduc issued the work in a separate print (titel The Little Negro, subtitel Le petit ngre) which, by writing out the repetition of bars 21 to 54, become noticeably longer than the original version. This edition is based on the first edition. The autograph is lost. Any marks not included in the source appear in parentheses.

Slave Songs of the United States

Slave Songs of the United States

$15.15

One of the first documentary collections of Negro folk songs was compiled in 1867 by William Francis Allen, Charles Pickard Ware and Lucy McKim Garrison. Under the title Slave Songs of the United States, this collection of 136 authentic folk songs of the Negro people revolutionized America’s understanding of this music. The book, which contains spirituals, work songs, field hollers, soldier songs of Civil War days, and freedom songs, has become a classic of its kind. These songs provide the basis for subsequent expressions of gospel music, blues, and jazz. In 1965, composer Irving Schlein created sensitive and useful piano settings for every song from the original edition. Chords for guitar have also been added to the musical notation. The result is a magnificent and practical volume of songs of great historical value designed for contemporary use.
