Recent Classical Music On The Arts Desk
From the world of classical music, the reviewers at The Arts Desk are not only letting us know what is happening at the moment, but informing us about what we have to look forward to in the next year.
The most recent round-up of classical CD releases is provided by Graham Rickson. First up is a disc of Bach’s keyboard concertos with Alexandre Theraud playing piano alongside the Les Violons du Roy chamber orchestra. The technical skill and energy on display here often dazzles and delights and together they produce a unique sound.
Often overlooked composer Elizabeth Maconchy is next up on the BBC Symphony Orchestra’s disc of pieces. Though she was a pupil of Vaughan Williams, Maconchy’s style is edgy, gritty and surprisingly un-English. Also getting a look in is Vaughan Williams himself, as his London Symphony is tackled by Sir Mark Elder and the Hallé Orchestra. Rickson was of the opinion that this symphony shouldn’t really work and yet it truly does, especially when played as well as it is here.
Tucked away in Monmouthshire, Stephan Walsh flags up a modest yearly classical festival. Every January in St Briavel’s Castle, young professional musicians gather for the Wye Valley Chamber Music Festival. It’s the brainchild of pianist Daniel Tong and violinist Fiona McNaught, and began life as a pleasurable retreat from busy concert schedules for those who love playing chamber music.
It promises to be a bumper season at the Barbican throughout 2012, what with the centre celebrating its 30th birthday this year and all eyes turning to London for the Olympics in the summer. Among the theatre, dance and new music on offer, the classical highlights at the Barbican in 2012 include appearances by Nico Muhly and Sufjan Stevens, an evening commemorating the sinking of the Titanic a century ago, a series of concerts by the visiting New York Philharmonic.

Johann Strauss Jr., the composer of the Blue Danube Waltz, became the waltz king at the time the dance craze swept Europe in the late 1800′s. In Vienna it was customary to have an orchestra play light concert music in restaurants with huge open courtyards. The only modern equivalent is the dinner theater, but the Viennese people were far more elegant, especially in their musical tastes.
Composers had to be ready to supply a constant stream of music. It took a lot of original waltzes, marches and polkas to keep the crowds at the beer garden happy.
Each beer garden had a musical director, and there was great competition to see who could provide the latest sensation.
Strauss conducted the orchestra, placed in the center of the surging crowd of diners and drinkers.
There were also balls and other entertainments, and the Strauss family was the leader in providing this zesty musical bill of fare, at one time employing enough musicians for six full time orchestras.
So popular was Strauss that even the great and serious composer Johannes Brahms fell under the spell of the Strauss waltzes. He once autographed Frau Strauss’s fan with the opening bars of the Blue Danube waltz, and signed it, “Alas, not by Johannes Brahms.”
At the height of his fame Strauss was lured to America in 1872 with a huge fee for a series of concerts, culminating in a festival in Boston called the Peace Jubilee.
Strauss walked into the cavernous coliseum for the performance of the Blue Danube, and discovered for the first time that he was to conduct an orchestra of 1,087 musicians.
In addition, there was a chorus of 20,000 singers, just in case you didn’t think the producers of this event were thinking big.
Strauss was horrified. “How am I supposed to conduct this mess?”
The producers pointed to a giant raised wooden dais in the middle of the stadium. At strategic points there were twenty smiling assistant conductors arrayed, each awaiting the cue from the famed Maestro.
The noisy crowd of 100,000 was roiling to a program already begun, and Strauss was forthwith led to his raised podium.
As Strauss ascended the stairs, he nervously asked the producer, “But how will I know when to begin?”
The producer, Patrick Gilmore, laughed and said to Strauss, “Oh, don’t worry. We’ll fire a cannon.”
Sure enough, soon after Strauss took his position there was a tremendous burst of cannon, and the downbeat was given.
In the words of Strauss himself, “There broke out an unholy racket.”
Thus began the World’s Largest Blue Danube Waltz.
Johann Strauss Jr. died rich and happy, certain of immortality alongside Beethoven and Brahms.

3 $18.99 Susanna Wallumr? d’s albums with and without the Magical Orchestra (aka Jaga Jazzist’s Morten Qvenild) have all taken a similar approach, whether she focuses on her own songs (List of Lights and Buoys, Sonata Mix Dwarf Cosmos) or the songs of others (Melody Mountain, Flower of Evil): her subtly remarkable voice — which carries within it echoes of singers from Nina Simone to Karen Carpenter — came first and foremost, surrounded by abstract arrangements soft enough not to detract from her vocals, but interesting enough to enhance them. Often, she sounded like she was singing with the weight of the world on her shoulders, but on the simply named 3, she and Qvenild sound like they’re bound for the stars. Lighter and more overtly electronic than Susanna & the Magical Orchestra’s previous work, these songs have a sci-fi glamour and wistfulness to them, as well as a grandeur that suggests vast dark skies filled with twinkling lights. 3 begins with one of its boldest departures, “Recall,” which sets Wallumr? d’s voice adrift on bubbling analog synths, weaving a hypnotic spell broken by huge drums that sound all the more massive compared to the polite percussion on her previous work. “Palpatine’s Dream” is even more striking, a song about Star Wars’ Sith lord made sleek and strangely sexy with electronics that stream by like meteorites and backing vocals by Wildbirds & Peacedrums’ Mariam Wallentin and Susanna’s brother Fredrik Wallumr? d. Not all of 3 is this drastically different than what came before it. Gently insightful songs like “The Game” and “Come On” could have appeared on Wallumr? d’s earlier albums, and she includes a couple of covers that reinforce what a gifted interpreter she is: Roy Harper’s “Another Day” becomes a dead-of-night piano meditation, and Rush’s “Subdivisions” is turned into a sparkling, ironically detached manifesto against conformity. Throughout, Wallumr? d, Qvenild, and company never lose the purity of their vision, particularly… |

Alice $15.98 It’s been long time since Tom Waits recorded an album as saturated with tenderness as this one. The carny-barker noise merchant who has immersed himself in brokenness and reportage from life’s seamy, even hideous underbelly for decades has created, along with songwriting and life partner Kathleen Brennan, a love song cycle so moving and poetic that it’s almost unbearable to take in one sitting. Alice is alleged to be the “great lost Waits masterpiece.” Waits and Brennan collaborated with Robert Wilson on a stage production loosely based on Alice Liddell, the young girl who was the obsession and muse of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland books. The show ran in Europe for a time and the production’s 15 songs were left unrecorded until now. Alice forgoes the usual nightmare lyric sequences, warped, circus-like melodies, and sonic darknesses that have been part and parcel of Waits’ work since Swordfishtrombones. Instead, this song cycle is, for the most part, steeped in jazz ballads, old waltzes, European folk songs, theatrical love paeans, and music not so easily identified. The instrumentation is different, with the utilization of a small chamber orchestra (the violins are Stroh violins, instruments outfitted with a metal horn on the end for amplification purposes), marimbas, piano, organ, woodwinds, and reeds, and the complete absence of guitars. The set opens with the title track, a smoky jazz ballad that may echo Waits’ work from the 1970s, but is actually miles beyond it in scope. Here there is no purposely postured nuance or affectation of persona. The lyric is plaintive and full of pathos; it’s almost a suicide note set to the most romantic melodic invention lounge jazz is capable of. As Waits sings, “The only strings that hold me here/Are tangled up around the pier/And so a secret kiss/Brings madness with the bliss/And I will think of this/When I’m dead and in my grave/Set me adrift/I’m lost over there/But I must be insane/To go on skating on your name/A… |

Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers concert at Central Park on 07 Jul 73 $8.98 This Central Park performance opens with bandleader Blakey intoning, in his distinctively gruff voice, the presentation of a special plaque to his friend and colleague, Gene Krupa, a champion of the drums from his days with the Benny Goodman Orchestra in the 1930s. Following that brief ceremony, which includes an eloquent acceptance speech from Krupa, the 1973 edition of the Jazz Messengers launches into Cedar Walton’s aggressive “Plexus,” a 1961 composition originally written for Freddie Hubbard’s 1961 Blue Note album, Hub Cap. In the solo order Carter Jefferson goes first, unleashing a potent tenor solo over the percolating groove provided by Ray Mantilla’s conga, Mickey Bass’ insistently walking bass lines and Blakey’s irrepressible presence behind the kit, dropping ‘bombs’ on the bass drum while cutting up the beat on the snare in unpredictable ways as he keeps the ride cymbal pulse steady and swinging. Eddie Henderson follows with a bravura high-note trumpet solo that is coming directly out of Freddie Hubbard school of audacious virtuosity. Veteran Messenger Fuller follows with a mellower but no less swinging trombone solo. Stitt enters the fray with a brief tenor statement before pianist-composer Walton completes the succession of solos on this blazing opener. Curtis Fuller’s “Alamode” pits Carter Jefferson against Sonny Stitt in an exhilarating bit of one-upsmanship. As Blakey’s uncanny forward momentum and powerful accents on the kit propel this Messengers staple, Jefferson solos first with robust tones and wild abandon. Stitt follows on alto with Bird-like facility and an urge to burn. Henderson turns in another pyrotechnic trumpet solo that nearly bursts with intensity in the high range and Walton negotiates the changes with hard bop fervor on his impeccably swinging piano solo. Blakey and the Messengers close out their Wollman Ampitheater set with drumming legend Roy Haynes, who played with Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane, joining the c |

Azerbaijani Piano Concertos $9.99 The Naxos label has made a good move in devoting several series of CDs to contemporary national schools, presenting compositions largely unknown outside their home countries. This release, apparently supported by Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, presents five works for piano and orchestra, most of them influenced by folk idioms in a manner that seems to have changed little following Azerbaijan’s re-emergence as an independent country in the 1990s. But the wrinkle here is that the native tradition fused with Western forms itself has several levels: folk melodies, a cultivated idiom akin to Persian and Arab classical styles, and Turkic and Persian cultural influences as well. The most ambitious piece is the first one, unusual in that it is a cooperative composition by Fikret Amirov and Elmira Nazirova, the latter an associate of Shostakovich. It adds Arab melodies to the mix, and it’s notable for its serious slow movement, which seems to have some of Shostakovich’s gloom. The booklet explains the deeper levels of cultural negotiation going on in that work and in the concerto by Vasif Adigezalov; these may not be immediately apparent to the Western listener, but the writing in the fast movements is tight and appealing, and pianist Farhad Badalbeyli is equal to the music’s high technical demands. The Dance for piano and orchestra of Tofig Guliyev is an exceptionally successful and high-spirited piece, but the two shorter impressionistic works of Badalbeyli himself at the end are less distinctive, albeit undeniably idiomatic. Enjoyable for anyone and well recorded in London’s Cadogan Hall with the Royal Philharmonic under the indefatigable Dmitry Yablonsky, this release stimulates curiosity about the other releases in Naxos’ Azerbaijani series. ~ James Manheim, Rovi |

Bach: Partita No1; Schubert: Piano Trio in Bf D898, Op99 $11.99 Isaac Stern’s influence will linger with violinists for many years, and his recorded legacy will endure as Sony finds new ways to repackage his extraordinary body of work. This Masterworks Expanded Edition consists of analog and digital recordings made between 1964 and 1996; except for the bonus track, this 2004 reissue corresponds to the second disc in the 2002 set, “In Tribute and Celebration.” Schubert’s Piano Trio in B flat major, which Stern performs brilliantly with cellist Leonard Rose and pianist Eugene Istomin, is the oldest recording here, but it is more enjoyable than it was on LP because the sound has been substantially improved through careful remastering. Brahms’ String Quintet No. 2 in G major fares less well in the remixing. Stern, violinist Cho-Liang Lin, violists Michael Tree and Jaime Laredo, and cellist Yo-Yo Ma are passionate and vigorous, but hot sound levels make the recording a bit too forward and abrasive. The Sarabande and Double from Bach’s Partita No. 1 in B minor is a fine example of Stern’s expressive solo playing, but all too brief as a filler piece. Mozart’s Rondo in C major, K. 373, rounds out the album, and Stern leads the Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra in a buoyant performance with natural sound. ~ Blair Sanderson, Rovi |

Bach: The Keyboard Concertos, Vol. 1 $21.98 Okay, that was weird. Did Angela Hewitt — a Canadian avatar of musical heresy of Bach on the piano — really have a harpsichord chattering along behind her in this recording of Bach’s Fifth Brandenburg Concerto? Did the Australian Chamber Orchestra — in all likelihood the finest ensemble of its kind and size from the land down under — really have the light-fingered Linda Kent providing the continuo on a performance whose ostensible raison d’etre is to demonstrate the efficacy of using a modern hammer-and-metal concert grand piano rather than a pluck-and-quill two-manual harpsichord? Apparently so; and yet one cannot deny that, despite the musical oxymoron of having the two keyboards existing in the same piece at the same time, Hewitt, Kent, and the Australian Chamber Orchestra’s version works wonderfully well. There is wit and joy and sorrow and a sort of multi-keyboard ecstasy in the performance, which, despite the blatant disregard of authentic performance practice, still sounds tremendously exciting. The other soloists — violinist Richard Tognetti and flutist Alison Mitchell on loan from the Scottish Chamber Orchestra — are just as fine as Hewitt, and the remaining performances on the disc — a demonic D minor Concerto, a delightful G minor Concerto, and a driven Triple Concerto — are just as fine as the Fifth Brandenburg. Plus, of course, Hyperion’s sound is absolutely transparent and thoroughly intimate. It’s so musically axiomatic that anyone who enjoyed Hewitt’s previous Bach recordings will certainly enjoy this disc and anyone who enjoys this disc will certainly enjoy Hewitt’s other Bach recordings. ~ James Leonard, Rovi |

Bags’ Groove $40.98 There are a multitude of reasons why Bags’ Groove remains a cornerstone of the post-bop genre. Of course there will always be the lure of the urban myth surrounding the Christmas Eve 1954 session — featuring Thelonious Monk — which is documented on the two takes of the title track. There are obviously more tangible elements, such as Davis’ practically telepathic runs with Sonny Rollins (tenor sax). Or Horace Silver’s (piano) uncanny ability to provide a stream of chord progressions that supply a second inconspicuous lead without ever overpowering. Indeed, Davis’ choice of former Dizzy Gillespie Orchestra and concurrent Modern Jazz Quartet members Milt Jackson (vibes), Kenny Clarke (drums), and Percy Heath (bass) is obviously well-informed. This combo became synonymous with the ability to tastefully improvise and provide bluesy bop lines in varied settings. The up-tempo and Latin-infused syncopation featured during the opening of “Airegin” flows into lines and minor-chord phrasings that would reappear several years later throughout Davis’ Sketches of Spain epic. The fun and slightly maniacally toned “Oleo” features one of Heath’s most impressive displays on Bags’ Groove. His staccato accompaniment exhibits the effortless nature with which these jazz giants are able to incorporate round after round of solos onto the larger unit. Bags’ Groove belongs as a cornerstone of all jazz collections. Likewise, the neophyte as well as the seasoned jazz enthusiast will find much to discover and rediscover throughout the disc. The remastered CD includes both historic takes of “Bags’ Groove” as well as one additional rendering of the pop standard “But Not for Me.” ~ Lindsay Planer, Rovi |
