Hopper's stark images invade the mind and linger on it forever However, since his brush strokes to hint at a condition of aloneness with strangers, a man suffering, a mystery of sorrow, and perhaps, an unexplained secret. To look at a Hopper painting is to discover some dark feeling within oneself.
Hopper of the world may look different than us, but it is more than ours hopefully. Maybe the scene in the first half of the 20th century will look like Hopper painted this way. Still, people on the scene seem disconnected, unlike that of some other painters of the time. No cars are there in the Hopper is empty streets, but the aloneness of the individual and a surreal feeling of being filtered through the eyes of viewers in almost every painting of his.
Hopper does not tell a story but paints a moment, a moment with loneliness, isolation, and a spell of the dark. In "automaton," a woman sits by himself, brooding. Window behind her shows nothing from the outside, but it reflects two sets of ceiling lights. It does not reflect anything from inside, not even women. In the 20th and 21st centuries, the practice was increasingly expanded to include more unique combinations of instruments resulting in products that could be peculiar or even unpleasant. Such is not the case with the tastefully and impeccably written heard on this Azica recording of the Massif Trio. Two guitars and a tenor are united for exceptionally enjoyable performances of Schumann’s Dichterliebe, Schubert’s four songs on poems by Salis-Seewis, and Strauss’ Op. 29 Three Songs. Arranged by guitarist Jonathan Barlow, the utmost care is taken to ensure the original wishes of the composers were taken into account, even altering the tuning of the guitars to capture the complete range of the original piano accompaniment. The warm, gentle sound of the two guitars provides a wonderful backdrop for tenor Nathan Bird, allowing the subtle nuances of his voice to shine through without having to fight against the more powerful piano. As a whole, the Massif Trio produces a masterful performance filled with keen musical insight, evocative text painting, and enticing sound quality. Produced by Joe Henry and performed by his own nearly ubiquitous sound-painting crew of drummer Jay Belleros, bassist David Pilch, keyboardist Patrick Warren, pedal steel, mandolin, and dobro master Greg Leisz, and guitar boss Doyle Bramhall III, this is Crowell at his most direct and dense: he channels many other songwriters, but as always he remains completely his own man. The title track opens the set with a mutant acoustic blues; it works with a culture-jamming sense of poetry, with images as angry as Steve Earle’s (without the autodidacticism) yet as dense and raggedly elegant as Bob Dylan’s. Henry’s killer band adorns Crowell’s blur of images with a strident yet warm piano, a mandolin, strummed layers of acoustic guitar, and a throbbing upright bassline walking the snare toward his indictment of how we view women, what we expect of them, and an exhortation to admit it. This is underscored on the ballad “Moving Work of Art,” where Crowell implicates himself as one who objectifies women despite his intentions — that he can use the language employed here points to his guilt. He tells a story, but uses the most poignant images to offer its truth — he doesn’t expect you to take his word for it (even when he flips the coin and shines a light on those who understand this objectification but seek it for personal gain).
