I’ll never forget the first time I tried to “compose” something. It was for classical guitar. I tried to create something original and it took me 2 hours just to write out 4-bars of melody. Of course, I didn’t know what I was doing. There has to be some kind of method that works for you. Now, the method I use today has been very easy to work with because it gives me the freedom to compose AND improvise at the same time. I “compose” using 8-bar phrases.

To do this all one has to do is write out 8-bars on a sheet of paper. Any paper will do. It doesn’t have to be music paper or manuscript. In fact, I just use a spiral bound journal with ruled lines on it. Whenever I want to memorialize an idea, I draw out 8-bars very quickly. I then improvise and allow myself the freedom to play anything that comes out of me. If I try and think something up, the music will usually wind up sounding forced or contrived – qualities that music is better off not having.

Once the idea (either melodic or textural) appears, I write out the first 2-bars so I remember what it is and use chords to quickly fill in the 8-bar section. After this is completed, I may draw another 8-bars and see what else comes. If nothing more is coming at this particular point, I put the journal away and come back to it later on. This method has served me well over the years and is an excellent starting method for beginning composers.

The music on this set is much less anarchic than some previous Faust releases, but that doesn’t make it any less enjoyable or adventurous. Rhythmically, Dermaier’s drumming is as trancelike as ever, whether he’s using his kit or various other percussion instruments (or those adopted as such); Peron’s basslines are throbbing, pulsing and incantatory; and Cambuzat’s wildly original use of guitars, various primitive keyboards, toy instruments, and household elements fills out a sound that is more speculative than aggressive, though there is no lack of drama in these proceedings. A listen to the nine-plus-minute mantra-like “Kundalini Tremolos,” which is Krautrock to its very core, is example enough. Giant Steps [Deluxe Edition] $59.98 History will undoubtedly enshrine this disc as a watershed the likes of which may never truly be appreciated. Giant Steps bore the double-edged sword of furthering the cause of the music as well as delivering it to an increasingly mainstream audience. Although this was John Coltrane’s debut for Atlantic, he was concurrently performing and recording with Miles Davis. Within the space of less than three weeks, Coltrane would complete his work with Davis and company on another genre-defining disc, Kind of Blue, before commencing his efforts on this one. Coltrane (tenor sax) is flanked by essentially two different trios. Recording commenced in early May of 1959 with a pair of sessions that featured Tommy Flanagan (piano) and Art Taylor (drums), as well as Paul Chambers — who was the only band member other than Coltrane to have performed on every date. When recording resumed in December of that year, Wynton Kelly (piano) and Jimmy Cobb (drums) were instated — replicating the lineup featured on Kind of Blue, sans Miles Davis of course. At the heart of these recordings, however, is the laser-beam focus of Coltrane’s tenor solos. All seven pieces issued on the original Giant Steps are likewise Coltrane compositions. He was, in essence, beginning to rewrite the jazz canon with material that would be centered on solos — the 180-degree antithesis of the art form up to that point. These arrangements would create a place for the solo to become infinitely more compelling. This would culminate in a frenetic performance style that noted jazz journalist Ira Gitler accurately dubbed “sheets of sound.” Coltrane’s polytonal torrents extricate the amicable and otherwise cordial solos that had begun decaying the very exigency of the genre — turning it into the equivalent of easy listening. Horace Silver Quintet concert at Wollman Memorial Skating Rink on 03 Jul 73 $9.98 A favorite of George Wein since the inception of the Newport Jazz Festival, pianist-composer and hard bop pioneer Horace Silver turned in a typically heated set with his current band at the time of this July 3rd concert as part of the 1973 Newport Jazz Festival in New York. His potent frontline of the Brecker brothers – 27-year-old trumpeter Randy and 24-year-old tenor saxophonist Mike – added an extra punch to this exhilarating performance held outdoors at Wollman Ampitheater in Central Park. With electric bassist Will Lee (a member of the Breckers’ Dreams band from ’71-’72) and drummer Alvin Queen, they kick off the set with Weldon Irvine’s “Liberated Brother,” a Latin-tinged number with a hooky piano riff that appeared on Silver’s 1972 Blue Note album, In Pursuit of the 27th Man. Randy solos first with a stream of notes bristling full of confidence and swagger. He is followed by younger brother Mike, who flashes the fabled chops that would influence a generation of players who followed in his wake. Silver adds a sparse, funky piano solo that is imbued with soul and the sound of surprise (throwing in one quote from George Gershwin’s “Summertime” in the midst of his lengthy, playful improvisation). Next up is the driving title track from In Pursuit of the 27th Man. Mike solos first this time, beginning slowly before digging in and erupting with his Coltrane-inspired sheets of sound playing through all ranges of the horn. Randy adds some heat of his own with an aggressive solo on this modernist modal number. Silver’s piano solo is typically enigmatic, laying on a dissonant, mesmerizing ostinato with the left hand while soloing emphatically with the right. Queen contributes an extended, dynamic, rapid-fire drum solo before the ensemble returns to the angular head and takes it out in a furious, cathartic fashion that would fit right in with the emerging avant-garde of the day. “Gregory Is Here” is a thoughtfully melodic number dedicated to Silver’s one-year-old so
