Beyond Standard $18.98 After four Telarc albums dedicated to original material, keyboardist Hiromi Uehara and her talented Sonicbloom trio tackle that most treasured of jazz traditions, the standard. Only 27 when this was recorded in 2008, her song choices and execution are less orthodox than other jazz artists’, hence the album’s intriguing title. The pops and clicks of an old vinyl record intro the proceedings, which officially kick off with a smooth rendition of Oscar Hammerstein’s “Softly As in a Morning Sunrise.” While it’s not unrecognizable from the original, bassist Tony Grey quickly steers into a solo that shifts the approach to improvisation and fusion-tinged waters, followed by Hiromi and guitarist David Fiuczynski trading licks. Ultimately the melody becomes obscured by the magnificent playing, as is typical of the jazz approach to interpretations. Debussy’s “Clair de Lune” is handled in a more traditional swinging style that soon shifts into slightly experimental territory with a hyperactive take on the Duke Ellington chestnut “Caravan.” Again Fiuczynski’s nimble guitar commands attention, twisting notes, playing with time and driving the arrangement, with Hiromi’s acoustic piano coming in later as the nearly nine-minute performance winds through its changes. Hiromi’s flying fingers and percussive attack are matched by Martin Valihora’s lively drum work. Some song choices are more unusual, with a funky “Sukiyaki” (listed by its original Japanese title “Ue Wo Muite Aruko”), Hiromi covering herself on “XYG” (the original “XYZ” substitutes “G” for added guitar) and Jeff Beck’s “Led Boots,” where Hiromi pulls out the synths and electric piano and plunges into full bore electrified fusion. She pays tribute to John Coltrane with “My Favorite Things” as she and the band slide and sidestep around the chorus and chords. She closes the hour-long disc with a solo “I’ve Got Rhythm,” which features her hyperventilating speedy runs. It’s a classy, impressive set th… |

USED: New Cool $3.99 Ron Surace’s jazz credentials have been primarily in the field of jazz education. He taught for 20 years at Jacksonville State University, setting up the jazz program there. Now he can practice what he has been preaching with his first album for Chicago’s Southport label. Of the 12 Surace originals, eight were written with the bass trumpet especially in mind. Ryan Shultz plays this rarely heard instrument — Cy Touff is the most prominent practitioner of this instrument in jazz — and acquits himself handsomely throughout as he adds smooth, rich accents to the music. The Surace compositions certainly promote the concept of cool. They are subdued, laid-back, and introspective, recalling some of the great members of that particular school of music such as Lester Young, Art Pepper, and Miles Davis, although the playing of Surface and his group is not as detached as some of his predecessors. One also hears a touch of Erroll Garner, especially on “Jazz Ballad.” The influence of Bill Evans can be heard in “Sky Blue,” which has a few chords that seem to be borrowed from Evans’ “Waltz for Debby.” One of the more engaging pieces is “Little Red,” with Shultz’ funky muted horn showing the way, aided and abetted by well-placed drum breaks by Rusty Jones as Surace’s piano swirls around the melody line. Surace successfully incorporates all the usual jazz forms into his writings — Latin, waltz, ballad, some blues, and trad jazz — and presents them in a variety of time sequences. The result is music with character, shape, substance, and meaning, a far cry from the limpid material being turned out these days. This is an excellent first outing, and one hopes others will follow. Recommended. ~ Dave Nathan, All Music Guide |

USED: ORG Lounge $7.98 Who is Ole Roar Granli? Why, he is the lead member of the electronica entity named ORG, based out of Holter, Norway. Granli handles the programming, writing, arranging, and mixing on the 12-track debut ORG Lounge and, honestly, puts Fatboy Slim to shame. What ORG offers up is jazzy/lounge electronica layered over colorful trip-hop and drum’n'bass beats. Granli is supremely talented at infusing all sorts of eclectic rhythms, breaks, solos, and ethnic flavor into his lengthy tracks. For instance, rumba meets jam-style jazz on the lively “Jazz Trippin’.” What sound doesn’t this guy extract from his rig? The song is accented by a lead xylophone line (!) bopping over racy jazz bass and brush playing and bright piano parts. Midsong, “Jazz Trippin’” slows to a smooth groove, only to burst again and race to an explosive finish. The vinyl record-like crackles here are also a nice touch. Another inspired moment is the album’s loungy opener, “Smooth,” where ORG uses a laid-back drum-machine pattern, bright synth chords and muted trumpet, and electric piano and basslines to transport listeners to an intimate jazz club. The song launches into a trip-hop beat midway, but the lounge affair still continues to vibe over it, only with a quickened tempo. The poetry slam-style rap delivery by Dustlab makes “Smooth” just too damn cool. A couple of other tracks on this mostly instrumental disc feature vocalists as well, such as “Too Beautiful.” More speedy trip-hop beats are on tap, and ethereal Swing Out Sister-style vocals — which actually personify the word beautiful — float like a light breeze over the tasty beats and understated synth chords. ORG deserves immediate attention. ORG Lounge is funky, smooth, invigorating, and an all-around hip experience. One point that needs to be stressed is how Granli is truly a master of his instruments. It’s quite amazing what he extracts from his synths, drum machines, and computers, and his fare does not fall victim to sounding “t… |
