Many Scots, past and present have naturally for one reason or another, left their native Scotland and now live in Australia and the Bundanoon Highland Gathering Holiday just actually is Australia’s premier Highland Gathering. With the perfect setting in the Southern Highlands, Bundanoon transforms for a day of magnificent, Scottish fun with all the trappings and a bit more to boot.

This may be the 35th Yearly Highland Gathering in Bundanoon and if the Celtic in you hasn't answered the call yet, it soon will, now that you know about it. No gathering is complete without a pipe band or two or three and Bundanoon is no different, with a street parade to show off their skills. Clan Societies will be represented in force and children’s decorated floats will also participate.

At the Bundanoon oval you should expect to find a unreserved feast of all things Scottish, for example Highland dancing, Scottish country dancing and traditional Highland games. As an extra special treat the Tartan Soldiers will be lifting the Bundanoon Stones of Manhood, an event not to be missed by anyone with a liberal quantity of Scots in them.

There will be at least one hundred and twenty craft, souvenir and food stalls to round things out and the Celtic Rock Band, ‘Highlander ‘ will be playing when the massed pipes and drums aren't. Other events include displays from the Southern Highlands Kennel and Obedience Club and a spectacular display from ‘Swordplay ‘ – the College of Theatrical Fencing and Stage Combat. Of course, a fine supply of Scotland’s fave drink will help things along. Do not miss this great day out!

The World Famous Edinburgh Festival Is An Arts Extravaganza Like No Other

Considered by many to be the largest performing arts festival in the world and drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors to Scotland’s capital every summer, the Edinburgh Festival is an extravaganza that has to be experienced to be truly appreciated. Though it is in fact a collection of smaller festivals that take place simultaneously throughout August, the whole city becomes a vast stages of theatre, comedy, music, dance and culture, so the term ‘Edinburgh Festival’ is used by most to describe the duration of them.

Starting in 1947 with the Edinburgh International Festival (EIF) which showcased international theatre in the capital, the event was soon ‘sabotaged’ by an external theatre group which would later become known as the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Both the EIF and the Fringe still run every year and are consistently the two biggest draws of the Edinburgh Festival, in terms of both performers and ticket sales.

Thanks to many household name comedians performing each year and elaborate international theatre productions setting up stage in the middle of the city, these two independent festivals often seem to get most of the coverage, but there is more to the Edinburgh Festival than just comedy and theatre. The Edinburgh international Film Festival (EIFF) is an award-winning and glitzy annual affair which now takes place in June instead of August each year. Red carpets, film stars and premiers ignite the city’s imagination for two weeks of the calendar as the city’s cinemas become the place to be. Another huge draw which sees visitors coming back again and again each year is the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Taking over the Esplanade of Edinburgh Castle for the month of August, this evening of incredible international military displays takes in everything from marching pipe bands and drum groups to motorcycle display teams and daredevil stunts.

Other festivals that overlap into each other in Edinburgh each August include the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival, Edinburgh Mela, which celebrates Edinburgh’s South Asian community, the Edinburgh International Internet Festival and the Edinburgh International Book Festival.
