2008 Canadian listeriosis outbreak

Origin and spread
Listeria monocytogenes, the bacterium responsible for listeriosis
Listeriosis is an infection caused by the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. The outbreak originated from lines 8 and 9 of the Maple leaf Foods Bartor Road facility (Establishment No. 97B) in North York, Ontario, an area of Toronto. There were about 220 possible contaminated products, each bearing the seal of the code "97B" near "Best before" date. Since the bacteria traveled through the deli meats, cooked (and as a result are generally free of pathogens), possible contamination occurred during packaging. The outbreak was first detected in July when regular surveillance noticed an increase in reported cases. Federal inspectors typically spent less than 2 hours a day and the plants in the months before the outbreak of the disease, sometimes as little as 15 minutes.
Response from the Maple leaf Foods
Maple leaf Foods instated a voluntary recall before the outbreak was linked to their plant, confirming the link, they expanded the recall to all products from the Bartor Road facility. A press conference, President and CEO of Maple leaf Foods Michael McCain said, "Tragically, our products are linked to pain and loss of life. For people with disease, and families who lost loved ones, offer my deepest and sincerest sympathies. Words can not begin to express our sadness for their disease. "
Officials from Maple Leaf believes the outbreak originated sometime in July in line 8 or line 9 of the facilities of North York. Regardless, the whole plant has undergone extreme cleanliness, which began August 21. About 80 workers are involved in cleaning, with additional outside experts and microbiologists oversees the operation. Four separate class-action lawsuits were filed in Ontario, Quebec, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia. The lawsuit in Ontario is claiming damages of $ 350,000,000. All the lawsuits were filed by Merchant Law Group.
The lawsuits were settled in December 2008 for $ 27,000,000.
Sandwich recall Hygaard
September 24, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency issued a notice for the products made by Hygaard Fine Foods Ltd., due to a possible contamination of Listeria monocytogenes.
