2004 Chevy Malibu not built correctly?

I bought a car, and 3 yrs later needed to replace the brakes. I can not get the right parts For setup is wrong, according to Vin drum must have its back but it has rear disc. Is there any liability on the part of gm for this? I'm looking for in one case, but I have spent considerable time and money trying to find the right parts for this car only to find out if I was buying the wrong part of their accounts. The car was purchased brand new like this, I have not changed anything. Vin says the code rear drum, I called gm and asked.for the specs. The front brakes sufficient for the rear drum (10.8 in) not back disc (11.5 in), but it has rear disc.
